M Is FOR MASHUP -
Dec 10th, 2008 Holiday RerunBhangra Bootay Be Shakin' It
By DJ Useo
There's certainly a lot of mashups available nowadays. That translates
into a fair amount of mashup compilations too. There's usually a
release a week of fine bootleg material, whether by a solo DJ, or
from a group of like-minded mixers. What this means to the audience
(you) is that you get a constant stream of records in a DJ"s
particular style, or along a theme, like CHRISTMAS. Or else a tribute
style, like the recent Rick Astley, or David Lynch compilations. Into
this atmosphere of competitiveness arrives a release that carves
it's own niche. BHANGRA BOOTAY
is 15 tracks by 13 people, but that's not the most amazing thing about it.
Check it out! BHANGRA BOOTAY enlivens it's mashups with tasty Indian
Bhangra stylings. You get the regular pop goodness of artists like
Snoop Dogg, Madonna, & the Supremes, but you receive them elevated
with the latest Bhangra sounds like Ru-Ba-Ru, Panjabi MC, & Punjabi
By Nature. The fine folk at
www.sound-unsound.com took many months
readying this release. As tracks slowly assembled, more potential
mixers heard the early submissions & the interest grew as it
became clear how appealing the combo of Bhangra & international
pop was proving to be.
From the opening notes of Eamezey's "Blunt Bhangra" & its James Blunt
pairing with Bhangra Knights & Husan, to the last echoes of Bobby
Martini's "F.E.A.R In Lila's Eyes" (Vas vs Kelly Clarkson vs Ian
Brown) the difference is startlingly apparent. The contributors are
so happy with the release, there is already considerable discussion
of a sequel. The project is only a week old so far, yet 2 likeminded
bhangra tracks have already appeared. This speaks volumes
for the potential of the style. People mention to me a lot that
they are waiting for something new in music. Well, this is about as
new as you're going to get, aside from Crance music.
Lots of talented mixers take their knives & tape to already fine
music with the goal of enhancing it into a cool Bhangra
mashup. You get naught but winners here with tracks by
mARKYbOY, MaxwellJump, & DJ Spider. There's plenty of appealing
grooves with the other tracks by Neiltomo, Guv'nor, Oscar TG, The
Reborn Identity, Mattbland, Mr Rusty, & Phil Retrospector. I bet you
expected me to say 'dj useo', well, I will now as I got a track
accepted as well. I took a track from the number one Bhangra album
of that time & dropped lots of Chromeo samples atop it, & now I
can't get the tune out of my head. I don't even care, tho, because
it feels so good.lol

No mix of the week this week as no new mixes were made. Really, not
even one. I heard of one that IS being mixed, but it's apparently
still a work in progress.
Mashup Tip : Tempo is extremely important when mashing, so never use any track under 140 beats per minute.

Long ago, Rabbi Abraham J. Twerski decided to go to medical school despite having a wife and two children (and a third child on its way). He managed to pay the bills, including tuition, for a while, but in the middle of his third year, he was no longer able to do so. In addition, he was deep in debt. However, his wife called him and told him that comedian Danny Thomas had pledged $4,000 to help him finish medical school. Mr. Thomas had met with officials from Marquette University, and they had told him about a Rabbi who needed financial help to get through medical school. Mr. Thomas asked, "How much money does he need?" Hearing the answer-$4,000-he said, "Tell your Rabbi he's got it." Mr. Thomas is a Christian, but he generously helped a Jew. Rabbi Abraham says, "Who would think of a less likely combination: a Lebanese Christian and a Chassidic rabbi?"

This book contains such anecdotes as these: 1) When Panamanian salsa singer Rubén Blades married Lisa Lebenzon, an Anglo (a white American not of Spanish descent) non-Spanish speaker, he asked her to learn Spanish so he could speak his native language at home. She finished in only seven months a Spanish course that normally took three years. 2) Dr. Louis Finkelstein, chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, kept a strictly kosher diet. While in Paris, he and a group of rabbis ate only in kosher restaurants. On leaving Paris, Dr. Finkelstein joked, "I can't understand all this fuss people make about French cooking. We have the same things at home."

UK Honors
Robert Plant
Rock singer Robert Plant, fantasy author Terry Pratchett and Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton were all honored by Britain's Queen Elizabeth on Wednesday.
The queen also granted awards to members of Britain's Beijing Olympics team, including a knighthood for triple cycling gold medalist Chris Hoy, the country's most successful Olympian at a single games for 100 years.
Plant, 60, most famous for fronting rock band Led Zeppelin in the 1970s, becomes a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) under Britain's ancient and complex system of honorary titles.
There was an OBE for actor Michael Sheen, who played former British Prime Minister Tony Blair in the 2006 film "The Queen," and a CBE for jazz musician Courtney Pine.

25 More Films Added
US Film Registry
One of Arnold Schwarzenegger's most famous one-liners will be back for generations to come, now that 1984's "The Terminator" has been selected for preservation in the nation's film archive.
The low-budget film directed by James Cameron set a new standard for science-fiction and made Schwarzenegger, now California's governor, a star. The Library of Congress announced Tuesday morning that it's one of 25 films being added to the National Film Registry. The formal unveiling was scheduled for 8 a.m.
The move will guard Schwarzenegger's deadpan, "I'll be back," against deterioration, along with the sounds and images of the other culturally significant picks. Other titles being added to the registry include the groundbreaking all-black-cast film "Hallelujah" from 1929; Richard Brooks' 1967 film adaptation of Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood"; and the 1972 film "Deliverance," based on James Dickey's novel about four businessmen on a nightmarish canoe trip in the remote Georgia wildnerness.
With Tuesday's additions, the total number of films in the registry will reach 500.

The rapper (real name: Earl Simmons) pleaded guilty on Tuesday to one misdemeanor count of animal cruelty, one felony count of theft, and one count each of felony possession of marijuana and a narcotic drug.
DMX, who appeared in handcuffs and wearing a black-and-white striped prison uniform, is expected to receive a minimum 90-day jail sentence as well as probation under terms of a plea agreement, according to the Maricopa County attorney's office. He will remain in the county jail until his sentencing and won't be given credit for time served.

Most / Least Desirable
Celebrity Neighbor
If they had to live next door to a celebrity, American adults would most like to be neighbors with Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and chat show host Oprah Winfrey.
But trouble-prone pop star Britney Spears would be the worst celebrity neighbor, according to a survey published on Tuesday of the most and least desirable well-known faces Americans would have in their backyard.
Republican vice presidential candidate Palin topped the poll of most desirable celebrity neighbors with 14 percent, closely followed by Winfrey, who was particularly popular with women.
Olympic champion swimmer Michael Phelps was heavily favored by men but came in third with 9 percent overall.

Swarm Of Quakes
Yellowstone
Yellowstone National Park was jostled by a host of small earthquakes for a third straight day Monday, and scientists watched closely to see whether the more than 250 tremors were a sign of something bigger to come.
Swarms of small earthquakes happen frequently in Yellowstone, but it's very unusual for so many earthquakes to happen over several days, said Robert Smith, a professor of geophysics at the University of Utah.
Smith directs the Yellowstone Seismic Network, which operates seismic stations around the park. He said the quakes have ranged in strength from barely detectable to one of magnitude 3.8 that happened Saturday. A magnitude 4 quake is capable of producing moderate damage.
Yellowstone has had significant earthquakes as well as minor ones in recent decades. In 1959, a magnitude 7.5 quake near Hebgen Lake just west of the park triggered a landslide that killed 28 people.

Threatens Time Warner Cable
Viacom
Viacom Inc on Tuesday said it will pull its cable television networks, including Nickelodeon, Comedy Central and MTV, off Time Warner Cable if the companies do not reach a deal on carriage fees by January 1.
In a statement, Viacom said it is seeking a fee increase of less than 25 cents per month per subscriber from the second-largest U.S. cable operator.
New York-based Time Warner Cable, which is expected to split from its parent Time Warner Inc next year, faces cost pressure from programmers demanding cash for retransmission fees. Retransmission fees are paid by cable and satellite companies to owners of broadcast signals on cable systems.
As advertising has taken a hit, more broadcasters are demanding cash from cable companies. At the same time, however, cable subscriber growth is slowing as consumers cut back on spending.
