M Is FOR MASHUP - November 25th, 2008
Early Mashup Presents
By DJ Useo
Well, you've all been very good this year so Santa Useo has lots of early gifts for you, & they're all mashup albums! Just what you wanted. All I want back in return is for you all to be good to each other. Oh,& if you feel like it,drop me a line telling me what mashup albums you want to see in the future. Who you want to hear mixed, what type of music you want mashed, & what kind of theme you want to hear next. I can't guarantee your idea will be made, but hopefully it'll influence us & we'll both be satisfied. Get ready to be happy right now, though, because you're about to get the links for the tunes you'll love. They may not all be 'just-released', but they're worth hearing.
To begin our tour of mashup comps, let's start with my new DOUBLE SECRET ALBUM. Unlike the dance tracks of BRUISEO & CONTACT, or the acid-rock of INTENSE PSYCHEDELIA's 1 & 2, this new collection sprawls across many styles of music. It begins with the punk rock of X set to the modern pop/rock sound of The Gossip. Then it veers into new wave, fidget, jazz, classic rock & more. You'll hear tracks using artists like Tears For Fears, Young Nutz, Fleetwood Mac, Basement Jaxx, Chemical Brothers & even Gloria Gaynor. There's single tracks you'll love & if you are open-minded enough, you'll find the entire release more than satisfying. Look for your copy here -

MASHUP HITS ( www.mashuphits.com ) is a new mashup site that's coming on strong. As proof, they've assembled the best tracks posted there during their first six months of existence. As a theme it may be loose, but the music contained is tight as hell! I don't know if the mixers featured knew about this record before it came out, but they should be mighty proud to be on it. With mixed artists like The Kooks, Green Day, Lady Gaga, & Metallica (among many more) & popular, talented bootleggers like Marc Johnce, DJ Lobsterdust, Wax Audio & Party Ben this record has all it takes to please.MASHUP HITS is off to a strong start! There's 20 tracks in all & they're available in one handy zip file here -

Yigtugd has done the impossible & he's done it twice! After finishing an entire album of Korean/Japanese pop mashups (With some American artists thrown in for variety) his pc ate it & he had to re-do the whole comp! A sad turn of events time-wise, but it appears to have made the final results strong. If you're looking for that international flavour that's hard to find, grab this collection. Over 12 tracks you'll hear mixes of artists like 4Minute, Kat DeLuna, Anyband, Son Dam Bi, AJ, U-Kiss, Utada Hikaru, Koda Kumi, Ne-Yo, BoA, 2PM, SHINee, Kardinal Offishall, After School, 2NE1, Wonder Girls, T.I., Avril Lavigne, T-Pain, Kanye West, Tohoshinki, Lily Allen, and Fort Minor! Whew! That's some list! Check it out for yourself

Rillen Rudi is a newer name in mashing to some, but he's certainly making it a fine one for himself & you can witness it on his 'Rillen Rudi Collection-Track-01-10'. With tracks like 'Falling Away From Reckoner' (Korn vs Radiohead) & 'Jump,Foxy Lady,Jump' (Jimi Hendrix vs Kriss Kross) he'll interest you enough to bookmark his blog & come back for more. I remember my first Rillen Rudi mashup. It was 'Epic Lollipops' (Herb Alpert vs Faith No More). A quirky little track that is really appealing, I played it in my weekly QRADIPS show ( qradip.blogspot.com/ ) & man did people like it. RR's made this a collection of his first 10 hits, so you get to hear musicians like Queens Of The Stone Age, The Prodigy, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Gorillaz & Foo Fighters mashed together in wonderful combinations. RR is just getting started, but he's made a place for himself in the scene & you'll be glad he did. The album is here -

There's more to be had, if you can believe it! I'll spare you more words now & just hook you up with the links, courtesy of MASHUP HITS ( www.mashuphits.com ) & their splendid compilation links page ( www.mashuphits.com/compilation.php ) .
I hope you enjoy each of these albums. I know I did. Take advantage of the links & tell your friends. They'll love you for it.
And, if you're working in the music industry, just look at all that potential money to be made! Bootlegs can be money-makers!
I hope you don't overeat this holiday season, but be sure & over-listen! lol!

With a winning audacity, 'The Fat Studies Reader' announces its intention to serve as the foundation of a new academic field. Its editors present convincing voices from law, medicine, social sciences and the humanities, making it difficult to dismiss their case that the time has come for fat studies. As the student authors of one essay note, the subject overflows disciplinary boundaries the same way their bodies overflow the desks in their college classrooms.

The "Shady in Red' Edition...
Publisher Harper Collins said Friday that Sarah Palin's memoir sold 300,000 copies its first day, among the best openings ever for a nonfiction book. Its print run already has been increased from 1.5 million copies to 2.5 million... In 2004, Bill Clinton's "My Life" debuted with sales of 400,000 copies. The year before, Hillary Rodham Clinton's "Living History" started at 200,000... The Wingnuts are going bonkers!
Do you consider Sarah Palin a legitimate political threat or merely a ditzy cultural doofus and a rabble-rousing, egotistical, power-broker wannabe?

Closing Remaining U.S. Bureaus
Washington Post
The Washington Post is closing its last U.S. bureaus outside the nation's capital as the money-losing newspaper retrenches to focus on politics and local news.
"At a time of limited resources and increased competitive pressure, it's necessary to concentrate our journalistic firepower on our central mission of covering Washington and the news, trends and ideas that shape both the region and the country's politics, policies and government," the newspaper's top editor, Marcus Brauchli, wrote in a memo to employees that was obtained by Reuters.
The Post will close its bureaus in Chicago, Los Angeles and New York, effective December 31.
The news comes after the Post told several employees at its website that they would be laid off, and follows several rounds of buyouts in recent years.

Twenty-Five Recordings Added
Grammy Hall of Fame
The Recording Academy on Tuesday added songs by James Brown, Bob Marley, the Beach Boys, Louis Armstrong and others to its Grammy Hall of Fame, bringing the total number of titles in the collection to 851.
The latest batch of 25 recordings added to the list includes Brown's 1966 "It's A Man's Man's Man's World" and Marley's 1973 album "Catch a Fire," which the Jamaican reggae great recorded with his band The Wailers, the academy said.
Also on the list was the Beach Boys' 1965 song "California Girls," jazz master Louis Armstrong's 1931 "Lazy River" and the 1972 comedy album "Class Clown" from George Carlin, who died last year.
The 25 recordings added to the Grammy Hall of Fame will be displayed along with the rest of the collection at the Grammy Museum in downtown Los Angeles. A full list of the recordings is at: grammy.com/Recording_Academy/Awards/Hall_Of_Fame .

Donates $1M
Tyler Perry
Filmmaker Tyler Perry has donated $1 million to the NAACP to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the civil rights organization.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People says the gift announced Monday is the largest donation from an individual in the organization's history. It will be distributed over four years.
In a statement, Perry says the perseverance of thousands within the NAACP helped pave the way for his success in the film industry.

Model Sold At Auction
King Kong
The tiny King Kong figurine that helped launch the career of one of cinema's biggest monsters has sold for about 121,000 pounds ($200,000) at a London auction.
Auctioneer Christie's says the 22-inch (56-centimeter) skeleton was the one used in the climactic scene of the 1933 movie in which the giant ape climbs New York's Empire State Building.
Other such figurines were used elsewhere in the movie, which wowed contemporary audiences with its groundbreaking special effects.
The figurine's metal skeleton was once covered in cotton, rubber, liquid latex and rabbit's fur. But the monster's fleshy covering has since rotted away.

Darwin Fight
Kirk Cameron
Kirk Cameron went to UCLA to convince students that Darwin's theory of evolution is dead wrong ... but when the students challenged the actor-turned-bible-banger to a debate, Kirk appeared to be "unfit" for the clash.
As we previously reported, Kirk headed to campus to hand out copies of a "revised" edition of "On The Origin of the Species" -- in which the author attempts to connect Darwin to Hitler.
During the "event," several students asked Kirk about his thoughts on Darwin. Kirk responded, "I believe that Darwin was absolutely ... that the end game was to make God ... was to remove God from the world view of .. I think that that was the end game."

Honored As NJ Hometown Hero
Richie Sambora
The New Jersey town where Richie Sambora grew up says Bon Jovi's lead guitarist can come home whenever he wants.
On Tuesday, residents and public officials gathered in Sambora's hometown of Woodbridge to name a street in his honor.
The 50-year-old Sambora has launched a fundraising effort called, "You Can Go Home," to give back to the community. The program benefits Woodbridge teen Kelly Mahon, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor two years ago.
Sambora also financed the new weight room at his alma mater, Woodbridge High School. It's being named in honor of Sambora's father, Adam, who died of cancer in 2007.

Obama Administration Will Not Sign
Land Mine Ban
The Obama administration has decided not to sign an international convention banning land mines.
State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said Tuesday that the administration recently completed a review and decided not to change the Bush-era policy.
More than 150 countries have agreed to the Mine Ban Treaty's provisions to end the production, use, stockpiling and trade in mines. Besides the United States, holdouts include: China, India, Pakistan, Myanmar and Russia.
A report this month by the International Campaign to Ban Landmines found that mines remain planted in the earth in more than 70 countries and killed at least 1,266 people and wounded 3,891 last year. More than 2.2 million anti-personnel mines, 250,000 anti-vehicle mines and 17 million other explosives left over from wars have been removed since 1999, the report said.

GMA Cancels
Adam Lambert
Adam Lambert's racy American Music Awards performance cost him a gig on "Good Morning America," but he will perform live instead on ABC's morning rivals at CBS.
Lambert was to sing Wednesday on "GMA," but the network said Tuesday it was canceling the openly gay singer because "we were concerned about airing a similar concert so early in the morning."
While singing his new song, "For Your Entertainment," at the awards program on Sunday, Lambert kissed a male keyboardist, fondled a dancer and had another dancer briefly stuff his face in Lambert's crotch. The performance prompted many complaints to ABC, and the network cut out the brief oral sex simulation for its West Coast broadcasts.
ABC News' top management made the decision to cancel Lambert, spokeswoman Cathie Levine said. She said there was no pressure from the parent Walt Disney Co.

Italian Group Wants It Cancelled
'Jersey Shore'
A national Italian-American organization based in New Jersey says an MTV reality show that depicts Italian-American beachgoers as the "hottest, tannest, craziest Guidos" is offensive and should be scrapped before it airs.
UNICO National said Tuesday that "Jersey Shore" relies on crude stereotypes and highlights cursing, bad behavior and violence in depicting renters at a New Jersey beach house.
An MTV promo says the participants "keep their hair high, their muscles juiced and their fists pumping all summer long!"
UNICO President Andre DiMino calls the show "trash television."

Settles Bill Dispute
Oprah's Mom
A financial dispute between Oprah Winfrey's mother and a high-end fashion store in Wisconsin has been settled.
Details of the agreement between Vernita Lee of Milwaukee and the Brookfield store, Valentina, have not been released.
Valentina sued Lee in 2008 for failing to pay the bill. Lee's attorneys argued the store should not have extended credit to her because of her earlier troubles paying a bill.

Animal Sacrifices
Nepal
The ceremony began with prayers in a temple by tens of thousands of Hindus before dawn Tuesday. Then it shifted to a nearby corral, where in the cold morning mist, scores of butchers wielding curved swords began slaughtering buffalo calves by hacking off their heads.
Over two days, 200,000 buffaloes, goats, chickens and pigeons will be killed as part of a blood-soaked festival held every five years to honor Gadhimai, a Hindu goddess of power.
While cows are sacred and protected by law in Nepal, animal sacrifice has a long history in this overwhelmingly Hindu country and parts of neighboring India. The Bariyapur festival has become so big, in part, because such ceremonies have been banned in many areas in the neighboring Indian state of Bihar.
Many Nepalis believe that sacrifices in Gadhimai's honor will bring them prosperity. They also believe that by eating the meat, which is taken back to their villages and consumed during feasts, they will be protected from evil.

State Lifting Film Tax Credit Suspension
Iowa
Iowa Gov. Chet Culver has lifted his suspension of a film promotion tax credit program for projects previously submitted by movie makers, Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller announced.
Miller said Monday the decision only affects movie makers who already have applied and that no new registrations will be accepted until after Culver and the Legislature have had a chance to re-evaluate the program next year.
Culver suspended the program in September after allegations of improper spending and sloppy bookkeeping by the Iowa Film Office.
Backers of 28 film projects had contracts with the film office and officials say contact has been made with 12 of them. There are 105 other registered projects and letters have been sent to those companies offering an opportunity to negotiate a contract.

Apologizes For Offensive First Lady Image
Google
Google Inc. is apologizing for a racially offensive image of the First Lady that appears at the top of the list when users search for pictures of Michelle Obama on its site.
Google placed a text ad above the image titled "Offensive Search Results" that states "Sometimes our search results can be offensive. We agree."
Users who then click on the ad are directed to a letter from Google that explains its results "can include disturbing content, even from innocuous queries" but notes that Google doesn't endorse content on these Web sites.
Google says its search formula relies on thousands of factors to rank a Web page's importance, and says it doesn't eliminate search results simply because of user complaints. However, Google says it will take down images in certain cases, such as when required by law to do so.
