HARPER'S WEEKLY REVIEW
November 4, 2003
Trent Lott suggested
that more U.S. troops be moved to the area around Tikrit.
"Honestly, it's a little tougher than I thought it was going
to be," he said. "If we have to, we just mow the whole place
down, see what happens. You're dealing with insane suicide
bombers who are killing our people, and we need to be very
aggressive in taking them out."
Resident Bush denied that
his political operatives had been responsible for the
erection of the MISSION ACCOMPLISHED banner that flew behind
him on the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln on May 1, when he dressed
up like a fighter pilot and declared victory in Iraq. He
said that his advance men "weren't that ingenious" and that
the banner was put up by crew members, "saying that their
mission was accomplished." Scott McClellan, the president's
press secretary, later admitted that the banner was in fact
created by the White House.
Historians were upset that the Smithsonian Institution's new
exhibit of the Enola Gay bomber fails to mention that the
B-29 dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima.

Re: Linda Tripp
Hey Marty,
So Linda Tripp is getting a ton of money from the Pentagon
for 'blowing'
her cover (disclosing her past mistakes)...
CNN does some creative reporting on this subject in the above article:
"Tripp sued the government when Pentagon officials leaked information
from the government
background investigation about her, which included the fact that she was
arrested as a juvenile
in a case involving drinking alcohol; she was never charged. "
According to this nifty Arrest Report from SmokingGun,
she was 19, which I
believe is not exactly
juvenile, and the case was Grand Theft Larceny, a bit more serious thank
drinking alcohol (maybe
they confused her with Dubya?).
Gotta love the libral press we have!

Hi Marty,
I've been watching this poll for a few weeks. I've never seen Shrub break the 33% mark and have seen him as low as the mid 20's.
The surprise? Its the Army Times!

A sunny, breezy beautiful day, but 'cold' by local standards.
Made a quick run out to the Valley to visit my Uncle Jimmy. Tried to convince him to go to the doctor - he had a run-in with prostate cancer a few years back.

Even though it wasn't the result I wanted, I respect him & his decision.

Faux Axes After 3 Airings
'Skin'
Fox has canceled prolific producer Jerry Bruckheimer's new series "Skin" after three low-rated airings.
Meanwhile, NBC has officially pulled the plug on the critically praised sophomore drama "Boomtown."
"Skin," Fox's "Romeo and Juliet"-esque serial drama set in the world of Los Angeles' adult entertainment industry, shut down production Tuesday after completing eight episodes.
Fox will run back-to-back original episodes of "The Next Joe Millionaire" at 8 and 9 p.m. Monday for the next two weeks, leading into the two-hour "Millionaire" finale Nov. 24.
Production on "Boomtown," which was on hiatus, will not resume. Six episodes were filmed, with two making it to air.

To Air on Showtime
Reagan Miniseries
Capping an extraordinary conservative furor over a movie virtually no one has seen, CBS scrapped plans Tuesday to televise "The Reagans" and decided to shunt it off to the Showtime cable network instead.
While CBS said it was not bowing to political pressure, critics said that was exactly the case, and worried about the effects of such pre-emptive strikes on future work.
The film had been scheduled to air Nov. 16 and 18, in the heart of the November ratings sweeps. CBS attempted to edit the film to remove offending passages, but gave up.
Neal Gabler, author of "Life the Movie: How Entertainment Conquered Reality," said CBS' decision was unhealthy for democracy.
"CBS, in pulling this film, did incredible harm, much more harm than they could ever have done in making the film," Gabler said. "What they've told us now is that a very small group of people have censorship power over the broadcast networks."
Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., said CBS' decision "smells of intimidation to me."

Finishes 'Dark Tower' Series
Stephen King
Stephen King had some good news for fans, so he delivered it in person. Sort of.
An animated "virtual" version of the horror writer appeared Monday on his Web site to announce that he had completed the final three installments of "The Dark Tower" series, which have been long awaited by fans.
"People have been asking one question above all others over the past nine years: When are you going to finish `The Dark Tower'? Well, guess what — it's done. So do me a favor and spread the word," he said.
"The Gunslinger," the first "Dark Tower" book, was published in 1982, followed by "The Drawing of the Three" in 1987, "The Waste Lands" in 1991 and "Wizard and Glass" in 1997.
"Wolves of the Calla" was to go on sale Tuesday, followed by "Song of Susannah" next summer. The final installment, "The Dark Tower," will be released next November.

Donates to Needy Kansas Town
Paul Newman
Paul Newman has made a "generous" donation to the southeast Kansas town of Franklin, ravaged by a tornado in May.
"We decided that it would be best not to give the exact figure, but it was a lovely, generous amount," resident Phyllis Bitner said recently. "We haven't earmarked the money yet for a specific project, but it will go a long way toward something."
Newman, 78, sent a personal check to the Franklin Community Council Inc., along with his wishes for continued success.

Plays Paganini's Violin
Regina Carter
Regina Carter, the first non-classical artist and the first black musician to play Paganini's world-famous violin, was reunited with the instrument in a concert that marked the violin's first appearance on U.S. soil in a decade.
Carter, along with her quintet and an orchestra, played a mixture of classically inspired songs and jazz tunes on the 18th-century violin at a sold-out concert at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall Monday night.
The jazz violinist first performed on the instrument, crafted by Guarneri, at its home in Genoa, Italy, in a history-making concert in 2001. Before Carter, only classical musicians had been allowed to play the violin, owned by the virtuoso Nicolo Paganini.
Carter later recorded with the violin for the album "Paganini: After A Dream," released earlier this year.

Developing Film on 9/11 'Revenge'
FX Cable Channel
Cable channel FX is developing a film based on a controversial book contending that the Sept. 11 attacks could have been avoided.
The book, "1000 Years for Revenge: International Terrorism and the FBI (The Untold Story)," was published in September by HarperCollins' ReganBooks imprint.
Author Peter Lance traces 12 years of terrorist efforts masterminded by Ramzi Achmed Yousef, who had been plotting various attacks since his role in the first bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993. "Revenge" culminates in the events of Sept. 11, 2001, which could have been prevented by a more alert FBI, argues Lance, an investigative reporter who has produced TV projects for the likes of CBS, ABC and HBO.

Reports $636M in 3Q Gains
Clear Channel
Clear Channel Communications Inc.'s earnings tripled in the third quarter, mostly due to the company's sale of shares in a major Spanish-language media company.
The San Antonio-based radio and outdoor advertising giant said Tuesday it earned $636 million, or $1.03 per share, for the three months ended Sept. 30, compared to a profit of $212.5 million, or 34 cents, for the same period in 2002.
The earnings included about $686 million in pre-tax gains, most of it relating to appreciation of Clear Channel's stake in Univision Communications Inc. and the subsequent sale of 8.25 million of those shares in September.
Radio accounted for the largest chunk of Clear Channel's revenue in the quarter at $963.6 million, almost identical to the same period a year ago. The company is the nation's largest owner of radio stations, with more than 1,200 in markets across the country.

New Exhibit
Steuben Glass
The crystal pieces could grace the table of any sophisticated dinner party with their simple, clean and elegant lines. So why are they in a museum exhibit?
Because Steuben glass is more than just nice tableware, says Donald Albrecht, curator of "Glass and Glamour: Steuben's Modern Moment, 1930-1960." Steuben is an example not only of modernist design, but of a company using a particular moment in time to make its product a household name.
"Glass and Glamour" opens at the Museum of the City of New York on Friday and runs through April 25, 2004.
The 200 objects in the show are from museums and private collections all over the world. The show focuses on how Steuben linked its image to the glamour of New York City and the newness of the modernist aesthetic in the middle decades of the 20th century.

Koi
A former Belgian ambulance driver put his first aid skills to good use by reviving one of his pond fish with mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, a newspaper said Tuesday.
Leo Van Aert, 57, was hosting a party at his home near the Belgian port of Antwerp when his wife noticed the koi -- a spotted Japanese carp -- floating on the surface of the garden pond.
He figured the koi had had a heart attack and took it out of the water to try to resuscitate it, giving it heart massages before joining lips with the fish.
"After 15 minutes, the fish started to move again so I put him in the pond...but when he fell over again I again applied mouth-to-mouth and heart massages," he said. "That's when the fish recovered."

Not wishing to take any risks, Britain's top secret GCHQ monitoring base carried out an investigation.
