Israel raided the Rafah refugee camp in the Gaza Strip and
left 1,240 Palestinians homeless after demolishing up to 120
houses; Israeli officials said they had destroyed three
tunnels used to smuggle weapons from Egypt. Eight
Palestinians were killed in the operation, including two
children.
Resident Bush gave a

that the situation in Iraq is "a lot better than you
probably think." On that day in Iraq, a car bomb attack
killed eight policemen, a Spanish diplomat was assassinated,
and a U.S. soldier was murdered.
Pat Robertson said that the State

Federal prosecutors indicted Greenpeace, under an obscure
1872 law designed to prevent "sailor mongers" from preying
on returning seamen, for authorizing a protest in which two
activists boarded a cargo ship and unfurled a banner. "Never

SAG Life Achievement Award
Karl Malden
The Screen Actors Guild, which represents around 118,000 film and television actors in the United States, on Tuesday named veteran actor Karl Malden as the recipient of its 2003 life achievement award.
The 91-year-old actor with his trademark bulbous nose has long been considered a top character player from the theaters of Broadway to the sound stages of Hollywood, specializing in everyday guys caught up in situations beyond their control.
In a career spanning over 60 years, Malden served on the board of governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which awards the Oscars, from 1984 to 1992, and again from 1994 to 1999. He also was a member of SAG's board of directors from 1963 to 1972.
The group's 40th life achievement award will be given to Malden at SAG's annual awards ceremony on Feb. 22 in Los Angeles, and televised around the United States on cable TV network TNT.

To Receive Humanitarian Honor
Barbra Streisand
Barbra Streisand will receive a Human Rights Campaign award for her support of gay and lesbian issues, religious freedom, and racial and gender equality.
The group, which lobbies on behalf of gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans-gender people, will present Streisand with its Humanitarian Award on March 6.
The group said Streisand, 61, took a stand against an anti-gay-rights proposal in Colorado in 1992 and has been a regular financial contributor to the Human Rights Campaign and other gay and lesbian organizations.

In time for the holidays, a Jimi Hendrix action figure will be produced and marketed by McFarlane Toys, which has in the past created similar replicas of Jerry Garcia, Ozzy Osbourne and Metallica, among others.
Dressed in blue velvet pants, white shirt and scarves, the six-inch figurine will be accompanied by a stage base, guitar, amplifiers, effects pedals, microphone and stand.
It is set for release in November, when Hendrix would have celebrated his 61st birthday.

Says Lennon's Spirit Watching Over Her
Yoko Ono
Twenty-three years after John Lennon was gunned down outside their New York apartment, Yoko Ono is convinced: "We are still working together."
"I feel we were like two soldiers in a battlefield marching with the beat of 'Give Peace A Chance'. And we are still doing it," Lennon's widow told Reuters on a trip to London for the launch of a new "Lennon Legend" DVD.
The new DVD, given its press launch in London Tuesday, includes 20 Lennon tracks, unseen footage and even some home movies that brought the memories flooding back.

Scraps Tour
Ozzy Osbourne
Heavy metal icon Ozzy Osbourne said on Tuesday that he was being treated for a nervous tremor he blamed for almost destroying his life and had scrapped a planned European tour in order to recover.
The British-born rocker said he had been undergoing tests for the past three weeks for an involuntary shuddering that had become "markedly worse over the last two years."
Dr. Allan Ropper, the chairman of the neurology department at Tufts University in Boston and Osbourne's physician, said tests had showed Osbourne did not have Parkinson's disease and that his tremor was "coming under control with medication."
"Unfortunately, one of the side effects of the medication is dry mouth, which greatly impairs the voice. This problem usually subsides after three to four weeks, but the downside is that this will definitely affect Mr. Osbourne's ability to sing at this time," Ropper said.

Lands Radio Job
Gary Coleman
Gary Coleman didn't win California's recall election, but he'll still get a political platform on the new Hollywood-based All Comedy Radio network.
The 35-year-old former child star will be the network's political analyst and said his experience as a candidate will come in handy in this new assignment.
Coleman finished eighth out of 135 candidates vying to replace Gov. Gray Davis in last week's election, losing to fellow actor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Among the topics he'll tackle will be the 2004 presidential election.

Denounces Screener Ban
Writers Guild of America
The west coast branch of the Writers Guild of America has become the first major Hollywood union to oppose the major studios' controversial ban on screeners.
"Screeners have become an important part of the way small, well-written films find their audience," WGA West president Victoria Riskin said in a statement released Monday. "To place a gag order on screeners is to tilt the playing field from small films to large."
Last week, more than 140 of the industry's leading directors, including Pedro Almodovar, Bernardo Bertolucci, Francis Ford Coppola, James Ivory, Mike Leigh, Sydney Pollack, Robert Redford, Martin Scorsese and Jim Sheridan, signed a statement in opposition to the screener ban. The statement was organized by Robert Altman, who directed "Gosford Park."

Says New Calif. Gov. Needs Luck
Clint Eastwood
Clint Eastwood, himself no stranger to the rough and tumble of elected office, says fellow actor Arnold Schwarzenegger is going to need a good measure of luck in his new role as California's governor.
"Politicians have to take unpopular decisions. Schwarzenegger is going to understand the nature of his job. I wish him good luck, he's going to need it. It's going to be difficult for him," said Eastwood in an interview published Tuesday by respected French daily Le Monde.
Eastwood told Le Monde that his love of movies curtailed his own political career.
"I knew I was in place for two years and I had absolutely no desire to present myself" for reelection, Eastwood said. "I was able to direct two movies during my mandate without failing in my duties as mayor. Everyone imagined me on course for the White House, especially with a former actor, Ronald Regan, in power. But I love cinema too much for that."

German Photographers to Boycott Tour
Bob Dylan
Photojournalists in Germany have announced plans to boycott Bob Dylan's upcoming tour of the country, after he stated that he would not allow his photograph to be taken during performances. The photographers are considering the same action against other international stars.
At its latest gathering on Friday in Berlin, the German Assn. of Journalists called on its more than 41,000 members to boycott Dylan's Oct 17-Nov. 8 tour, as well as those by major acts such as Peter Gabriel, Paul McCartney, Bon Jovi, Guns N' Roses and the Kelly Family.
The association's managing director, Thomas Schelberg, says photographers are increasingly facing restrictions imposed by artists and their management over the types of photos they can take during concerts and how the images can be used.

Making Singapore Debut
'Rocky Horror Picture Show'
The cult classic "Rocky Horror Picture Show," which premiered in U.S. theaters almost 30 years ago, will finally make its Singapore debut, media reports said Tuesday.
Local censors had originally objected to the kinky sexual practices depicted in the science fiction horror film starring Susan Sarandon and pop star Meatloaf, the Straits Times newspaper said.
The risque musical will be screened for the first time in the conservative city-state at an outdoor Halloween party on Nov. 1 along with a handful of other horror-themed films, the paper said.

Sings Anthem at Baseball Game
Jose Feliciano
Jose Feliciano sat on the Florida Marlins' bench during batting practice Sunday at the NL championship series and gave the seat a pat.
"I'm in the dugout," Feliciano said happily. He returned to baseball's October spotlight after a 35-year absence, singing the national anthem before the Marlins' game against the Chicago Cubs.
It was his first postseason performance since Game 5 of the 1968 World Series, when his stylized, gospel-tinged rendition caused a dispute that derailed his career for several years.
His two-minute rendition Sunday drew only cheers at Pro Player Stadium. But 35 years ago, the crowd of 50,000 at Tiger Stadium had a mixed reaction to what he termed the first nontraditional version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" at a major sports event.

Files for Separation
Patrick Stewart
Actor Patrick Stewart, who played Capt. Jean-Luc Picard on the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" television series, is seeking a legal separation from his wife.
Stewart, 63, cited irreconcilable differences in the court papers filed Tuesday. He and Wendy Neuss-Stewart, who have no children, were married in August 2000, the filing said.
He and his first wife, Sheila Falconer, have a son and daughter.

Wins Libel Case
Nicole Kidman
Oscar-winning star Nicole Kidman won a five-figure sum and an apology Tuesday from a British newspaper that said she had had an affair with actor Jude Law and was to blame for the break-up of his marriage.
At London's High Court, the tabloid Sun newspaper admitted the allegations about Kidman, which were published in March, were untrue.
"The defendants apologize to the claimant for the distress and embarrassment this article has caused," said the Sun's lawyer Daniel Taylor.

No Doubt
Southern California pop group No Doubt will issue "Singles 1992-2003," augmented with a cover of Talk Talk's "It's My Life"; the "Rock Steady Live" DVD; and a limited-edition four-disc boxed set dubbed "Boom Box." A video for "It's My Life" has been shot by famed photographer David LaChapelle.
"Singles" does not run in chronological order, as it opens with No Doubt's 1995 breakthrough single "Just a Girl" and closes with "Trapped in a Box," drawn from its self-titled 1992 debut. The set naturally includes the group's three biggest hits: "Don't Speak" (the first album cut to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart, 1996), "Underneath It All" featuring Lady Saw (No. 3 Hot 100, 2002) and "Hey Baby" (No. 5 Hot 100, 2002).
"Rock Steady Live" was taped last year at the Long Beach (Calif.) Arena, and sports 21 songs in total plus interviews and behind-the-scenes footage.
Of perhaps most interest to collectors is "Boom Box," which gathers "Singles," a DVD of the 1997 VHS release "Live in the Tragic Kingdom," a DVD of 15 music videos and a disc of 17 B-sides, rarities and remixes. Highlights of the latter disc include "I Throw My Toys Around" with Elvis Costello, "New Friend" featuring Bucaneer and a remix of "A Real Love Survives" featuring Ms. Dynamite.

Voice Support for 'LA Times' Series
Newspaper Editors
Newspaper editors around the nation voiced support this week for the Los Angeles Times' decision to run a series of articles about sexual harassment allegations against Arnold Schwarzenegger just before California's gubernatorial recall election. Some critics have blasted the paper for using unnamed sources and publishing the articles a few days before voters went to the polls.
Running Oct. 2-5, the series detailed charges from 15 women claiming that Schwarzenegger had either touched them inappropriately or otherwise sexually harassed them. The first story included allegations from six women, but named only two.
"I think it was well-reported and very fair under tight constraints," said Leonard Downie Jr., executive editor of The Washington Post. "It looks like they came out with it as fast as they could." On the use of unnamed sources, Downie added, "they named the people they could name and not name those they could not."
Others pointed out that since the recall campaign lasted only about two months, the normal length of time for an investigation was not available, requiring a compressed reporting process. "You make decisions based on what you know in a situation," said Carole Leigh Hutton, executive editor of the Detroit Free Press. "I would hope they didn't sit on it. I would come down on the side that says you have an obligation to get the information out. I don't think it was so close that it didn't give him a chance to respond." Hutton also would not criticize the use of unnamed sources, saying "you have to know what kind of conversations took place in the newsroom" before making a judgement on that issue.

Exhibit Showcases Ancient City
Petra
Temples and tombs carved into the rock face. An advanced irrigation system that created gardens and pools in the desert. This was Petra — the prosperous city at the crossroads of international trade more than 2,000 years ago.
An exhibit showcasing the art and culture of this ancient city, almost a decade in the planning, opens this week at the American Museum of Natural History.
"Petra: Lost City of Stone" opens at the museum on Saturday and runs through July 6, 2004. The show, organized by both the Natural History museum and the Cincinnati Art Museum, features 200 objects from collections around the world.
Petra was founded before the first century B.C. by the Nabateans, nomads who decided to become city dwellers. Skilled planners and engineers, they built an irrigation system that was capable of bringing millions of gallons of water to the city every day from other nearby sources. They also created thousands of structures, carving some, like tombs, out of the cliffs that surrounded them.
