HARPER'S WEEKLY REVIEW

September 30, 2003

At the request of the CIA, the Justice Department began investigating charges that the White House leaked the name of undercover CIA agent Valerie Plame to the press in retaliation for remarks by her husband, former ambassador Joseph Wilson, challenging resident Bush's claim that Iraq tried to buy yellowcake uranium in Africa.

An unnamed administration official told the Washington Post that two White House officials had revealed the agent's identity to at least six journalists.

"Clearly," the official said, "it was meant purely and simply for revenge."

The White House denied that Karl Rove was responsible for the leak, which was a violation of the Intelligence Protection Act and carries penalties of up to 10 years in prison and $50,000 in fines.

Mongolian troops returned to Baghdad for the first time since 1258, when Hulegu, a grandson of Genghis Khan, destroyed the city and killed 800,000 people.

The One-Trick Bush Presidents

You¹ve heard about that pony that just does a single trick,
The first time that you see it you think: "Wow, that's mighty slick,"
But because there's no good follow up, the thrill is gone real quick,
It reminds one of Bush presidents‹their fight and conquer shtick.

Both these men faced one big crisis where they showed superb élan,
The first Bush saved the Kuwaitis, while Bush II took down Afghans.
Then alas, both seemed unable to build on what they began,
From a clear path they diverted, stumbled off without a plan.

Great presidents, in many things, a greatness they imbue,
In domestic and in foreign realms the good works they accrue.
But if only for one moment their great merit is on view,
Voters do not grant them four more years to show what they can do.

In The Chaos Household

Last Night

Since science camp, the kid has been howling for lasagna. In an effort to placate him, made a couple of gallons of red sauce yesterday & picked up some mozarella & ricotta. Spent the afternoon playing with food.

Made a pan for now & one for the freezer. Fred dropped by & helped us plow through the tribute to my grandmother's cooking.

On the local news, it was mentioned that the DA still hasn't filed against Phil Spector, even though the coronoer declared homicide. This is the same DA who went after Paula Poundstone. And Winona Ryder.

It also was reported that Ahnold isn't paying his bills - except for TV advertising - and was over $2 million in the hole (so far). Yeah, I bet Maria has to deal with calls from collection agencies at night.

Wonder why he's getting a pass on the steroids issue?

But mostly, I wonder why no one is pointing out how most of the evils blamed on Gray Davis are courtesy the previous governor, Mr. Deregulation, Pete Wilson, who is coincidentally Ahnold's campaign manager?

Appeared On Leno

Howard Dean

Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean poked fun at his fund-raising success Tuesday in his first appearance on the Jay Leno show.

In a film clip, Dean was shown playing a guitar on a street next to signs reading, "Your change for real change" and "We'll strum for presidency." People were shown placing money in an open guitar case.

Earlier in the day, Dean campaigned in the inner city of Los Angeles, promising jobs, health care and a dialogue on race at a meeting with local leaders who have long been skeptical of politicians' promises.

Photo Exhibit Opens in Philadelphia

Martin Luther King Jr

A new photography exhibit on Nobel Peace Prize winner and famed civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. is now on display at the African American Museum here.

"Countdown to Eternity," features 78 black-and-white photographs taken in the last year of King's life, and are the work of Benedict J. Fernandez, a freelance photographer who chronicled 1960s protests.

The exhibit also depicts King's celebrity status. He walks arm-in-arm with Dr. Benjamin Spock at an anti-war rally in New York. A young, bespectacled Bill Cosby makes eye contact with the camera at King's funeral. And there's Sen. Robert F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, standing in a packed crowd outside King's memorial service.

Furniture Sale Smashes Expectations

Elton John

Pop star Elton John's sale of the contents of his London home as he goes minimalist after a lifetime of flamboyant extravagance, smashed expectations as it raised over 1.4 million pounds ($2.3 million) on Tuesday.

The auction of everything from Elizabethan paintings to Art Deco beds had been expected to raise 800,000 pounds with prices ranging from 40 to 40,000 pounds for items of furniture, paintings, baubles and even a pair of stone poodles.

Top price in the sale was paid for Maxwell Armfield's painting of Madison Square Park which went for 67,000 pounds, nearly double its top pre-sale estimate, while a portrait painted in 1617 of Queen Elizabeth I and priced at 40,000 pounds was knocked down for 54,000 pounds.

The heavyset performer, 50, felt ill and admitted himself to an undisclosed Los Angeles-area hospital last week, his longtime agent, Steve Levine of ICM, told The Associated Press.

Levine declined to offer other details or say what kind of medical attention Anderson received, but confirmed the ailment was "definitely his heart." However, he added, it wasn't a heart attack.

Hip-hop mogul Sean "P. Diddy" Combs is planning to run in the New York City Marathon and has been training the past three weeks.

Combs hopes to raise $1 million for three children-focused groups with his run. The race, sponsored by ING, is on Nov. 2. Last year, more than 31,000 people entered the 26.2-mile event. The top finisher crossed the finish line in just over 2 hours and 8 minutes.

The beneficiaries of Combs' efforts are the Children's Hope Foundation, city public schools and Daddy's House Social Programs, which was founded by Combs. He hopes to raise the money though a combination of corporate and private donations. Companies that have signed on include Nike, MTV, McDonald's and Footlocker.

Trial Date Set

Rosie O'Donnell

Former talk show host Rosie O'Donnell is heading to trial with the publishers of her former magazine, Rosie, which closed down last year.

An Oct. 28 trial date was set Tuesday in New York State Supreme Court in the case pitting O'Donnell against magazine publisher Gruner + Jahr USA, a division of the German media conglomerate Bertelsmann.

The magazine shut down last fall amid a dispute between G+J and O'Donnell, who said she was being denied editorial control over the magazine as promised in their contract. G+J said O'Donnell had acted unprofessionally and irresponsibly, and sued her for breach of contract.

Ballerina Must Be Reinstated

Anastasia Volochkova

Thanks to Russia's Labor Ministry, ballerina Anastasia Volochkova may be back at the Bolshoi for an encore.

The Labor Ministry ruled her dismissal violated labor law, saying she must be rehired by Oct. 6 and given back wages, said Andrei Pryanishnikov, a spokesman for Labor Minister Alexander Pochinok.

Bolshoi spokesman Katerina Novikova said it was too early to comment on how the Bolshoi would react to the decision. Pryanishnikov insisted the Bolshoi has no choice but to comply.

Piracy Fears

'Screener' Copies

Academy Awards voters will have to catch most of their movies on the big screen after Hollywood implemented a plan Tuesday to ban special DVDs and videotapes of Oscar contenders.

Fearing that "screener" copies could be used by video bootleggers to mass produce pirated DVDs and tapes, the major studios and their trade group, the Motion Picture Association of America, worked out an agreement.

The agreement would include MPAA's seven studio members — Disney, Warner Bros., Sony, Universal, 20th Century Fox, Paramount and MGM — plus their affiliates such as New Line, Miramax, Focus Features and Sony Pictures Classics. DreamWorks, though not an MPAA member, also agreed to the screener ban.

Subpoenas In Case Against Former Business Manager

Kiss

Kiss singer-bassist Gene Simmons and singer-guitarist Paul Stanley were handed subpoenas before their show with Aerosmith on Friday (September 26) at the Tweeter Center in Tinley Park, Illinois.

Stanley and Simmons were served in conjunction with a case against Jesse Hilsen, the band's former business manager. Hilsen fled to South Africa in 1994 and became a fugitive rather than pay $2 million or more to his former wife Rita in their divorce settlement, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Hilsen's relationship with Kiss goes back about 20 years, to when he was Stanley's psychiatrist. He became the band's business manager in the late 1980s and continued in that role until 1992, when he and Kiss parted company.

The show, titled "Visions of World War II," nearly caused a melee at Friday night's football game at Dallas' Hillcrest High School.

"We were booed," Grissom said Monday. "We had things thrown at us. We were cursed."
