M Is FOR MASHUP - September 9th, 2009
The Ten Best Mashups Every Week
By DJ Useo
I'm not sure how many great mashups you can handle in just one week. I've got a voracious appetite for them & I can process & enjoy around 10 tracks a day. That's about 658 MB a week, or approximately 85 tracks. That much concentrated mashup would probably kill most people. It took me quite a while to build up my bootleg tolerance factor. I remember when that many tracks would leave me stunned, or worse. Once I got too many new DJ Topcat tracks & I developed a nasty case of pella fever. It took me 2 weeks to recover from that & I still get 'itchy' if I download too many Topcat tracks in 1 day.
I bring up the subject of how many mashups at once is too many because I am hosting a new radio show that counts down the best ten new mashups each week that are posted at www.sound-unsound.com .The show is packed with enough vitamin M (mashup) to satisfy the daily bootleg needs of 1 1/2 adults at once. Usually by the time I've reached the number one track, listeners are unable to say more than :) (smiley face). I have to watch it with bonus tracks that may get played after the ten proper countdown tracks, because it's just more than most can process in 1 sitting.
You may recall I was doing a similar top ten mashup countdown for a different site a few months ago, but as good as that show did, this new one is an improvement. The hardest thing about doing such a show is not finding the mashups, there's always lots of incredible new tracks, it's ordering them in the proper way that reflects the audiences opinion of what's best without seeming like it's just favoritism. To avoid that, this show makes use of the Sound-Unsound forum admins to determine the actual best tracks. Every Thursday we make that the cut-off date for the week & hold a group online chat to hash out the tracks for the show & then the best order.
I thought that was the toughest part of doing the show. At first. I have always disliked ordering or voting for stuff because it's not my forte to say which is best out of a crowd of excellent tracks. At the last show I did, they just sent me the script to read & it came with the list already determined. It was best for me at the time. Now though, after 5 shows of this new countdown, I'm really finding it much easier to select the number & sequence of the tracks. It's become a blast to meet with peeps like Sfreeman, Markyboy, DJ Petrushka & the rest & go over the damn fine mashups posted that week.
The shows aren't scripted now, so it's just me hosting in a spontaneous manner although I am looking forward to the guest-host shows coming up soon. In fact,Sfreeman, the master of fidget music is starring in episode 6 next Sunday. The setlist is a few days away from being determined, but to give you an idea of the content, here's the list from last weeks' show.
01 - Marc Johnce - Troublemaker Kills You (The Black Ghosts Vs. Weezer)
02 - DJ Le Clown - The People (John Lennon vs Empire Of The Sun)

The radio station has new shows every evening & when there aren't new shows, there's over 300 brand-new mashups I put on the radio auto-player myself. Excellent programming, I say.
Thanks for reading. One last thing. My radio show THE QRADIPS SHOW w/ DJ Useo, where I played the most off-kilter mashups out there is not being produced for the time being, but all past shows are being archived at www.qradip.blogspot.com
If you like Dr. Demento-type bootleg mixing, try one. I guarantee it'll have you wanting more.
Mix Of The Week - DJ Useo Land is a live mix I did with no tweaking. It's high-energy house, electro & mash & can be found at the great long mix site B00MB0X. Check out how I mix live & let me know if I mix too much or not enough. I've heard both things! Lol!

Mashup Tip : Stretch yourself mixing-wise & use styles of music you don't know as well. G3RSt in the show listed above used Hawaiian steel guitar music set to Jay-Z & made a fine track. Don't limit yourself to only one style.

The 'So Says Michael' Edition
Capitalism is evil. That is the conclusion U.S. documentary maker Michael Moore comes to in his latest movie "Capitalism: A Love Story," which premiered at the Venice film festival Sunday.
Do you agree with his assessment? (No need to respond, SallyP(al), we KNOW what you think!... Well, OK, go ahead... But, try keeping it to no more than novella length, eh? LOL...)

New Line Lawshit Settled
Tolkien Estate
The heirs of J.R.R. Tolkien and a movie studio that produced the blockbuster "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy have settled a lawsuit over the films' profits, it was announced Tuesday.
The out-of-court resolution clears the way for a two-film prequel based on Tolkien's novel "The Hobbit" and will benefit charities around the world, according to a joint press release announcing the settlement.
Tolkien's heirs sued New Line Cinema in February 2008, claiming the studio owed it millions in profits from the movies released between 2001 and 2003. The films earned an estimated $6 billion in sales of movie tickets, DVDs and merchandise.
No settlement paperwork has yet been filed with a Los Angeles court. The terms of the deal are being kept confidential.

Survivors Reunite
Bee Gees
The two surviving brothers of the Bee Gees are preparing to perform together again, six years after the death of their brother and third Bee Gee, Maurice Gibb, according to media reports.
Robin Gibb told BBC Radio that he had just been with his older brother Barry in Miami and they were ready to perform together again, planning a series of live dates.
He said he and Barry had "got through the breakwater of emotions" following their sibling's 2003 death.
Maurice Gibb died suddenly in 2003, aged 53, from complications following an operation to correct a twisted intestine. At the time his brothers said they would no longer perform as the Bee Gees after 45 years together.

Wisconsin Entertainment
Cricket-Spitting
When it comes to spitting a cricket for distance, the central Wisconsin talent seems concentrated in one Marshfield family. Brian Johnsrud spat a thawed cricket 22 feet, 8 inches at the Central Wisconsin State Fair on Saturday. Minutes later, his son Jared shot his cricket 10 feet, 5 inches to win the 9-to-11 age division.
Brian Johnsrud said the key is to pick the biggest cricket and put it upside down on your tongue. He also said you have to take the deep breath before putting the cricket in your mouth, so you don't swallow the critter.
Daniel Word, 7, won the competition among 5- to 8-year-olds. After spitting his cricket 9 feet, 11 inches, he said it wasn't easy.
The event drew enough interest that organizers say they'll make it an annual affair.

New AIDS-Awareness Ad
Germany
Germany's latest AIDS-awareness commercial evokes some strong emotions: shock, disgust, nausea. And that's exactly the point. The controversial ad, which was released online on Sept. 3 and starts running on German TV on Wednesday, shows a couple having steamy sex in a dimly lit room with menacing music playing in the background. The viewer only sees the back of the man's head until the very end, when the camera pans to his face - to reveal that he's Adolf Hitler. Then the slogan flashes across the screen: "AIDS is a mass murderer."
It's a strong message, but HIV/AIDS organizations in Germany are arguing over whether it's the right one. Rainbow, the AIDS awareness group spearheading the campaign - which also includes newspaper ads and posters featuring the images of other dictators like Stalin and Saddam Hussein - says it deliberately wants to provoke people, especially young Germans, into using condoms to help prevent the spread of HIV. "We want to give this terrible virus a face," Jan Schwertner, spokesman for Rainbow, tells TIME. "AIDS is a forgotten issue in Germany. It's been swept under the carpet. This shock campaign is necessary to get people thinking again."
But the use of Hitler's image - always a highly sensitive topic in Germany - has angered mainstream HIV/AIDS organizations, which say the ad stigmatizes HIV sufferers. On Tuesday, Deutsche AIDS-Hilfe, an umbrella group for HIV counseling centers and Germany's biggest AIDS organization, called the video "disgusting" and demanded an immediate end to the campaign. "The video ridicules all victims of the Nazi regime and it equates HIV-positive people with mass murderers," says spokeswoman Carolin Vierneisel. "The advertising campaign just relies on provoking anxiety among people. That's the wrong approach. Successful HIV prevention is based on factual information about the risks of HIV transmission and encourages people to use condoms."

Fast Food Giant Loses
McDonald's vs. McCurry
Fast food giant McDonald's on Tuesday lost an eight-year trademark battle against a Malaysian curry restaurant after the country's highest court allowed the latter to use the prefix 'Mc'.
Malaysia's Federal Court dismissed an application by McDonald's Corporation to appeal against an earlier Appeals Court judgment which allowed McCurry to use the prefix.
Chief Judge of Malaya Ariffin Zakaria, reading the verdict of the three-person Federal Court in the administrative capital, said McDonald's had failed to properly frame its questions when applying to challenge the Appeals Court's earlier verdict.
McCurry, which is short for "Malaysian Chicken Curry," serves Malaysian staples including fish head curry, according to the company website.

China Project
First Solar
US energy giant First Solar won a deal with China to build the world's largest solar power plant in the Mongolian desert which officials say could mitigate climate change concerns.
First Solar will construct the two-gigawatt plant in Ordos City, Inner Mongolia, under a memorandum of understanding (MOU) inked Tuesday with Chinese officials at the company's headquarters in Tempe, Arizona.
The solar facility is to be built in four phases over a decade and supply power to three million Chinese homes, the company said in a statement.
The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed but First Solar said that if a similar plant were to be built in the United States, the cost would be about five to six billion dollars.

Rodent Convention
D23
Die-hard fans of Walt Disney Co gather this week in California for the company's first-ever fan exposition and what Disney hopes will be a show of the durability of its brands in a tough time.
Disney executives are likely to face fan queries about what the planned acquisition of Marvel Entertainment Inc, announced last week, would mean for its movie, theme park, toy and TV offerings in coming years.
The event at the Anaheim Convention Centre, adjacent to Disneyland, is one of the few put on by a corporation, rather than its fans, to celebrate its history and products.
The September 10-13 event, called D23 Expo in a nod to the year Walt Disney founded his animation company, is expected to draw about 10,000 fans from all over the world for what Disney billed as unprecedented access to its archives as well as glimpses of upcoming films, TV shows, park rides and toys.

Porn Link
Ponzi Scheme
A small-time money manager who did business out of a shabby storefront in Brooklyn was charged Tuesday with running a $40 million Ponzi scheme that secretly diverted client money to unauthorized ventures, including a mail-order pornography business.
Federal prosecutors and the Securities Exchange Commission said Philip Barry, 52, ran the scam without detection for 31 years until the economic downturn bankrupted him last summer.
Working from a small office in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bay Ridge, far from the city's financial center, Barry claimed to be investing in stock options and guaranteed his neighborhood clients solid returns.
But in reality, investigators said, Barry was using much of the money to speculate on real estate. He bought an office building in Brooklyn and big tracts of undeveloped land upstate.
