The Weekly Poll

New Question

The 'So Says Michael' Edition

Capitalism is evil. That is the conclusion U.S. documentary maker Michael Moore comes to in his latest movie "Capitalism: A Love Story," which premiered at the Venice film festival Sunday.

Do you agree with his assessment?   (No need to respond, SallyP(al), we KNOW what you think!... Well, OK, go ahead... But, try keeping it to no more than novella length, eh? LOL...)

Trivia Question Of The Day

What band's music is used for the theme songs on CBS's CSI franchise?

Trivia Question from Yesterday

What TV show used John Philip Sousa's Liberty Bell March for a theme song?

      Monty Python's Flying Circus                                               Source

"The Liberty Bell" is an American military march composed by John Philip Sousa in 1893 It is often associated with the 1970's British comedy program Monty Python's Flying Circus, which began and ended with the first few bars.
Terry Gilliam said the theme was chosen because they thought it could not be associated with the program's contents, and that the first bell strike and the subsequent melody gave the impression of getting "straight down to business." It was also chosen because it was in the public domain and free from royalties, as there was no budget for theme music copyrights.
The Monty Python mode of presenting the tune was with a single strike of the bell, lifted from the third section and increased in volume, followed by a strain of each of the first two sections, followed by the famous stomping foot and a "splat" sound (though the first episodes used a "boom"). At the end of Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl , the entire march was played over the closing credits .
"The Liberty Bell March" was used by the Buckingham Palace Guard before it became associated with the television series, after which they chose another march
The United States Marine Corps Band has played "The Liberty Bell March" at three presidential inaugurations: the 1993 inauguration of President Bill Clinton, the 2005 inauguration of resident George W. Bush, and the 2009 inauguration of President Barack Obama.            Source

Doug G ("What we think, or what we know, or what we believe is, in the end, of little consequence. The only consequence is what we do." -  John Ruskin  -) was first, and correct, with:
Monty Python - Named for John Lennon's guitar strap.

Charlie replied:
   Monty Python's Flying Circus

They allegedly used it because it was in the public domain and they didn't have to pay anyone to use it.
It's a bit weird that the following turns up searching Monty Python images, but since I'm a big fan (of both Monty Python and old girl groups), I'll send it anyway.

I did get to meet Miss Kitty in Austin when she opened a nightclub called Miss Kitty's....that was before I heard the joke, though.

Matt had just returned from a 3 day trip to the next county to deliver a prisoner. On his return, all he wanted was to sleep. He entered the jail and called for Chester. Chester said he was in the back and couldn't come out. Matt, agitated, ordered Chester to come out front and tell his what the matter was.

Chester told Matt that he had a boner for the last three days and it wouldn't go away. Matt told Chester to take his horse to the livery stable and go see Doc on the way.

Chester went to see Doc and told him what the trouble was.

Doc told Chester to go to the stable, get a shovelfull of horse manure, stick his boner in and it would go away.

Chester was skeptical, but went to the stable anyway, and got the shovelfull of manure. Just as he was about to put his boner in, Miss Kitty walked by and asked Chester what in the hell did he think he was doing.

Chester told Miss Kitty what doc had said to do and why. Miss Kitty went to the haystack, pulled up her dress and said, "Chester, why don't you put it here?"

To which Chester replied,"The whole shovel full, Miss Kitty?"

Thanks, Randy!

Fined For Trousers

Lubna Hussein

A Sudanese woman was found guilty of indecency and fined on Monday for wearing trousers in a case that has attracted worldwide attention, but she will be spared lashes, an official who attended the trial said.

The woman, Lubna Hussein, was arrested at a party in July with 12 other women and had faced the possibility of 40 lashes for wearing trousers deemed indecent. The court ordered her to pay a fine of 500 pounds ($209) or face a month in jail.

A former reporter who was working for the United Nations at the time of her arrest, Hussein has publicized her case, posing in loose trousers for photos and calling for media support.

Ten of the other women arrested with Hussein have pleaded guilty and have been whipped, Hussein previously said.

U.N. officials have said the United Nations told Sudan that Hussein was immune from legal proceedings as she was a U.N. employee at the time of her arrest. But the case was allowed to proceed after Sudan's foreign ministry advised the court that Hussein was not immune.

Gives Away Cars

Ludacris

Talk about a one-man stimulus package: Grammy-winning rapper Ludacris has given away 20 cars to people who wrote about their struggles to keep their jobs for a lack of wheels of their own.

Ludacris said he was taken aback after reading thousands of essays by people struggling or unable to buy cars needed to get to and from work or find jobs. The 31-year-old rapper felt he could step in and move them ahead, partnering with a suburban Atlanta dealership for Sunday's giveaway.

"People are getting laid off, and now are looking for jobs," Ludacris said. "To be efficient, you need some transportation of your own to get there. That's why I wanted to give back to those who need it."

Each of the used vehicles included free gas for 30 days. Winning contestants were responsible for tags, registration, tax and insurance. About 4,000 contestants submitted a 300-word essay to the rapper's foundation, explaining why they deserved a car.

"Take Heart - Fly, Dove of Peace"

Yukio Hatoyama

Japan's next leader, Yukio Hatoyama, probably never thought a song he recorded 20 years ago would one day fetch a pretty penny on online auction sites.

The vinyl single, "Take Heart - Fly, Dove of Peace," recorded in 1988 when Hatoyama was first elected to parliament, recently sold for 35,000 yen (228 pounds) in an online auction, a Japanese tabloid reported.

The title is a pun on Hatoyama's name, the first half of which is written with an ideograph meaning "dove" and which sounds like the Japanese pronunciation of "heart."

Hatoyama, 62, who is the wealthy grandson of a former premier, will formally take office on September 16 following his Democratic Party's stunning victory in an election last week where it trounced the long-ruling Liberal Democrats.

Millionaire Demands Reward

Bianca Jagger

An Austrian millionaire who found the lost 200,000-euro ring of pop culture icon Bianca Jagger has agreed to negotiate a settlement over her refusal to pay him a reward, his lawyer said Monday.

Reinhard Ringler is suspending the lawsuit he filed against the ex-wife of Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger to find a deal over the unpaid 10,000 euro (12,788 dollar) reward, said the lawyer, Paul Kreuzberger.

Austrian law mandates that Jagger pay Ringler, a wealthy entrepreneur, five percent of the ring's value.

But Jagger says Ringler should not get the reward because he took too long to return the platinum-and-aquamarine ring, which she had designed herself.

Loses Medical Negligence Lawsuit

Mark McEwen

Former CBS "Early Show" personality Mark McEwen is moving on with his life after a massive stroke nearly four years ago that abruptly ended his TV career. He's written a book about his experiences and is trying to raise awareness about stroke warning signs and recovery.

But McEwen, 54, is now dealing with a fresh setback - the abrupt end to a court battle against the doctor who told him he had the stomach flu when he showed up at a Maryland hospital emergency room with stroke-like symptoms.

Two days after that hospital visit, McEwen boarded a flight home to Orlando, Fla., and suffered a massive stroke. His attorneys claim the stroke could have been prevented if McEwen had been given drugs including aspirin and anti-coagulates.

But U.S. District Judge J. Frederick Motz disagreed, ruling last week that those drugs were not effective enough in the short term to have made a difference in McEwen's case.

McEwen had to learn to walk and talk again after the stroke, and the former righty now uses his left hand for most tasks. While his speech sounded clear in a telephone interview, he said his voice remains "a work in progress," and a full-time return to television is out of reach.

Congress Weighs Privacy Changes

Web Ads

The Web sites we visit, the online links we click, the search queries we conduct, the products we put in virtual shopping carts, the personal details we reveal on social networking pages - all of this can give companies insight into what Internet ads we might be interested in seeing.

But privacy watchdogs warn that too many people have no idea that Internet marketers are tracking their online habits and then mining that data to serve up targeted pitches - a practice known as behavioral advertising.

So Congress could be stepping in. Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Va., chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Communications, Technology and the Internet, is drafting a bill that would impose broad new rules on Web sites and advertisers. His goal: to ensure that consumers know what information is being collected about them on the Web and how it is being used, and to give them control over that information.

While Congress has waded into Internet privacy issues before, this measure could break new ground, as the first major attempt to regulate a nascent but fast-growing industry that represents the future of advertising. Boucher insists his bill will benefit consumers and preserve the underlying economics of the Internet, which relies on advertising to keep so much online content free.

What Global Warming?

Tuktoyaktuk

Caught between rising seas and land melting beneath their mukluk-shod feet, the villagers of Tuktoyaktuk are doing what anyone would do on this windy Arctic coastline. They're building windmills.

That's wind-power turbines, to be exact - a token first try at "getting rid of this fossil fuel we're using," said Mayor Merven Gruben.

It's a token of irony, too: People little to blame, but feeling it most, are doing more to stop global warming than many of "you people in the south," as Gruben calls the rest of us who fill the skies with greenhouse gases.

They're feeling climate change not only in this lonely corner of northwest Canada, but in a wide circle at the top of the world, stretching from Alaska through the Siberian tundra, into northern Scandinavia and Greenland, and on to Canada's eastern Arctic islands, a circle of more than 300,000 indigenous people, including Gruben and the 800 other Inuvialuit, or Inuit, of the village they know as "Tuk."

Red Hat Secrets

Easter Island

British archaeologists said Monday they believe they have solved the ancient mystery of how the giant stone statues on Easter Island acquired distinctive red hats.

The researchers said the key to the mystery lies in their discovery of a road on the tiny Pacific island.

The hats were built in a quarry hidden inside the crater of an ancient volcano, and then rolled by hand or on tree logs to the site of the statues, said the team from the University of Manchester and University College, London.

The archaeologists examined the way the hats, each weighing several tons and made of red scoria, a pumice-like volcanic rock, were moved by Polynesians between 500 and 750 years ago.

Extinct Species Rediscovered

Arakan Forest Turtle

The rare Arakan forest turtle, once though to be extinct, has been rediscovered in a remote forest in Myanmar Burma, boosting chances of saving the reptile after hunting almost destroyed its population, researchers said Monday.

Texas researcher Steven Platt and staff from the New York-based Wildlife Conservation Society discovered five of the brown-and-tan-spotted turtles in May during a survey of wildlife in the Rakhine Yoma Elephant Sanctuary.

The sanctuary contains thick stands of impenetrable bamboo forests, with the only trails made by the park's elephants, said Platt, of Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas.

Native to the Arakan hills of western Myanmar Burma, the turtles were believed extinct for close to a century until they started turning up in Asian food markets in the mid-1990s.
