HARPER'S WEEKLY REVIEW

July 29, 2003

A joint congressional committee released an 850-page report concluding that the September 11 attacks could have been prevented; a 28-page section detailing the Saudi Arabian government's links to the terrorists was redacted.

The report, which also found no evidence of links between Iraq and Al Qaeda, had been slated for release in December 2002 but was delayed due to administrative wrangling over which sections should be classified.

After killing Saddam Hussein's sons, Uday and Qusay, U.S. forces circulated grisly photos of the corpses in hopes that the images would help to dispel conspiracy theories, popular among Iraqis, that the United States is still in league with Saddam Hussein.

Deputy defense secretary Paul Wolfowitz warned Iraq's neighbors not to meddle with the American occupying forces, proclaiming, "I think all foreigners should stop interfering in the internal affairs of Iraq."

The former head of the U.S. army's Depleted Uranium Project announced that the damage from munitions used in both Gulf Wars will eclipse the Agent Orange fallout of the Vietnam War.

A Toronto sign hangs with the Rolling Stones logo at a concert stage erected at Downsview Park in the north end of Toronto, July 29, 2003. The Rolling Stones agreed to headline a massive outdoor concert to 'bring back the energy' to the only area outside Asia to experience deaths from severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). Organizers are still grappling with the logistics of an expected 450,000 people jamming into a former military airport for the June 30 event which will also feature Australian rockers AC/DC, former N'Sync member Justin Timberlake, and Canadian legends Rush and The Guess Who.

Speaks Out On Speaking Out

Natalie Maines

Dixie Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines says that her controversial anti-Bush comment made during a concert while overseas in March wouldn't have grabbed nearly the attention it got if others were less afraid to speak up for themselves.

"It scares other people for us to speak out, and it scares other artists after what happened to us," Maines said. "But I think the more people get it out there, then it would be less of a topic and of a judgment if everyone just said who they were and what they were."

As for Maines' comment that she was ashamed to share the state of Texas with resident Bush, the singer maintains that she meant what she said, but not how she said it. "We're all aware of what I said," Maines said. "And my apology was for the words that I used, but not for the motivation behind the words and for my beliefs. I think we have all stood behind that."

Calls for Global Spinal Research

Christopher Reeve

Actor Christopher Reeve told an Israeli audience Tuesday he thinks there is a good chance he will walk again — provided "politics and religion" don't interfere with scientific research.

Speaking to journalists at the Weizmann Institute of Science in the city of Rehovot, near Tel Aviv, Reeve said progress on research required international collaboration, but was being slowed by disputes over intellectual property rights and widely varying rules on stem cell research.

"My hopes are that politics and religion will not interfere with progress for a cure," Reeve said Tuesday. "If those problems are overcome, I stand a good chance of walking."

Joining NBC's 'Boomtown'

Vanessa Williams

Vanessa Williams liked the idea of joining the NBC drama "Boomtown" even though it means being away from her New York-based children while shooting the show in Los Angeles.

Williams has signed on to appear as Det. Katherine Pierce in 10 of the season's first 13 episodes of the sophomore series that airs Fridays this fall.

Williams, 40, has three children from her first marriage. She has a young daughter with second husband, Rick Fox of the Los Angeles Lakers, and he has a son from a previous relationship.

Senate Likely to Vote

Media Ownership

Senate critics of sweeping media ownership changes approved by the Federal Communication Commission said Tuesday they have enough support to force a vote on rolling back the decision.

A resolution of disapproval for the rules changes, a seldom-used maneuver also called a "congressional veto," could go straight to the Senate floor for a vote as early as the first week of September, said Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., one of 20 senators sponsoring the measure.

The resolution is among several legislative challenges to an FCC overhaul that would allow individual companies to own television stations that reach nearly half the nation's viewers. Companies would also be allowed to own newspapers and broadcast stations in the same city.

Mounting resistance in Congress has left FCC Chairman Michael Powell on the defensive, issuing public statements justifying his agency's actions and denying rumors that he plans to resign.

Superman Suit To Auction

George Reeves

When Superman donned his red cape in the 1950s, he ran faster than a speeding bullet and was able to leap tall buildings with a single bound, but not even he could have known that his S-emblazoned outfit might fetch $150,000 at auction.

Los Angeles-based Profiles in History opens the bidding in an auction of Hollywood memorabilia on Thursday with some 360 items for sale from the Superman costume George Reeves wore in the 1950s TV show of the same name to the gloves Arnold Schwarzenegger used in "Terminator 2: Judgment Day."

While the auction features mostly items from science fiction movies and television shows, one piece up for grabs is Mel Brooks' first writing screenplay of the 1968 film "The Producers," an adaptation of which is now a hit stage play. It is expected to fetch between $8,000 and $10,000.

Bids can be made in person at Profiles in History's Beverly Hills office or online at eBay live auctions.

Banned in Malaysia

'Bruce Almighty'

Jim Carrey's "Bruce Almighty" might join the growing list of movies that have fallen afoul of Malaysia's censors.

The government minister called for the comedy to be banned, deeming it offensive to Muslims, the BBC reported. The minister, who is responsible for religious affairs, said the theme of the movie isn't "appropriate."

Films outlawed in Malaysia include "Daredevil," "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me," and "Zoolander."

Hawking Cords

Madonna

For its new fall ad campaign, the Gap gave Madonna and Missy Elliott a pair of corduroy pants and several tops to customize to their individual styles.

Each had a big M embroidered onto the back pocket of her pants. "Lady M" was silkscreened down one of the legs of Madonna's light-blue, low-rise cuffed cords. Elliott decorated her pants with studs, attached a gray hoodie sweat shirt to a corduroy jacket and had an airbrushed portrait of herself added to a plain white T-shirt.

A limited edition Madonna and Missy Elliott CD remix will be available at Gap stores and on the company's Web site starting Thursday.

Sues Movie Production Co.

Diane Lane

Oscar-nominated actress Diane Lane sued a movie production company for about $2.7 million, alleging it failed to finance a film she was slated to star in or sign up Bruce Willis as her co-star.

In the lawsuit filed Monday in Superior Court, Lane alleged that Intermedia Film Equities USA agreed to pay her $3.5 million regardless of whether or not the movie entitled "Me Again" was made — a provision known in the film industry as "pay or play."

Lane, 38, claimed that Intermedia made three payments to her in June, totaling some $833,000, but has failed to pay any more, leaving a balance of about $2.7 million.

According to Lane's lawsuit, Intermedia could not raise enough money to finance the film and negotiate a buyout with Willis after it realized it couldn't afford to pay him enough to make the movie.

Pelted With Garbage

Fred Durst

Fred Durst must have been having a really bad day when the Summer Sanitarium tour stopped outside Chicago Saturday.

The Chicago Sun-Times describes Durst as having a tantrum on stage and ending Limp Bizkit's set after just 20 minutes. The report says heckling fans throwing garbage gave Durst a rough reception.

At first, Durst encouraged the abuse, then offered to fight anyone within earshot while yelling curses and sexual putdowns.

According to the report, "Had the villain in 'The Wizard of Oz' been a vile little boob like Durst rather than a snarly old lady in greenface, the movie's 'I'm melting!' scene might have looked like this."

The band left the stage early and Durst continued to curse the fans from the wings until someone took the microphone. That meant the crowd had to wait more than an hour before Metallica took the stage.

'Fifth Beatle' Auction Flops

Stuart Sutcliffe

Letters, photos and other personal items documenting the life of the little-known "fifth Beatle" Stuart Sutcliffe found few buyers when they went under the hammer in London.

Edinburgh-born Sutcliffe, a bassist credited with inventing the band's name and distinctive mop-top look, died of a brain haemmorrhage in 1962, before the Beatles hit the big time. He was just 21.

His sister Pauline had been guarding numerous pieces for the past 40 years, and finally decided to put 100 of them up for sale.

But many of the lots auctioned at Bonhams in London did not sell, and others went for less than the list price, a spokeswoman for the auction house said.

It was the first time in the event's 15-year history that the ceremony was held outside Las Vegas, and it coincided with the 25th anniversary of casino gambling in Atlantic City and the opening of the $1.1 billion Borgata.

Jones made his first appearance in Atlantic City at Resorts in 1978. The 63-year-old singer said he'd continue to sing in casinos for as long as he could.

Leaves Land for Public Use

Katharine Hepburn

Four acres of beachfront property near Katharine Hepburn's home will become protected land for public use, according to the late actress' will.

Hepburn, who died at 96 last month at her waterfront home in the Fenwick section of Old Saybrook, left 4.17 acres of land to the east of her driveway for "exclusively public purposes."

Hepburn's Oscars and other awards, scripts, photographs, letters and costumes will go to a charitable organization of the executors' choice. The executors will also decide which of her letters, manuscripts and other papers should be published.

Most of the actress' estate will go to her family. She left her Connecticut home and New York town house to her brother, Robert Hepburn; her sister, Margaret Perry; and to the families of her late brother, Richard, and late sister, Marion.

The Fenwick house, which has 13 acres on the Long Island Sound, should be put on the market soon, said Erik Hanson, the co-executor of the estate. Hanson was Hepburn's accountant, financial consultant and friend.

Loses 135 Pounds

Heavy D

Rapper-turned-actor Heavy D says he's dropped 135 pounds in the last year. Heavy D, whose real name is Dwight Myers, said the weight loss wasn't prompted by health concerns but because he was losing roles.

"I went on a couple auditions and one director was kind enough to say, `Look, you would've had this part but you're not fitting, you're stifling yourself,'" he told the Television Critics Association last week.

"He was right. I kind of always knew it in the back of my mind, and I just woke up on a Tuesday and I just kept going."

Sounds Familiar

Silvio Berlusconi

Silvio Berlusconi, the brash Italian prime minister fighting his way through a web of political and diplomatic turmoil, is apparently terrified of ... spiders.

Parliament -- which is dominated by Berlusconi supporters -- on Monday night rushed through a law banning poisonous spiders, scorpions and other creepy crawlies from being brought into Italy.

But the speed with which the law was introduced has raised eyebrows, with Berlusconi already in trouble over allegations that Italy's richest man is using his political power to further his extensive business interests.

"Whether it's justice, television or even spiders, you always find a conflict of interest where Berlusconi's concerned," said former health minister Rosy Bindi.

Profits Up

Clear Channel

Clear Channel Communications Inc., the No. 1 U.S. radio station owner, on Tuesday posted higher second-quarter profit after a one-time gain despite a decline in radio advertising revenue but expects a stronger second half as the economy improves.

Radio ads fell 2.1 percent on weakness in local ads and consumer products and fast-food categories. But revenues rose 20 percent in outdoor advertising and 9 percent in its concert and sports business.

Clear Channel, the subject of two federal antitrust probes, reported net income of $251.3 million, or 41 cents a share, compared with a year-ago profit of $238 million, or 39 cents a share. Revenues rose to $2.32 billion from $2.17 billion.

Charged With Using Profanity

Sean Paul

Jamaican rapper Sean Paul has been charged with using profanity during a performance at Montego Bay's Reggae Sumfest last week.

Paul's performance Thursday night was laced with expletives, police commander Newton Amos said Monday. Authorities served him with a summons under a law prohibiting people from using profanity in public.

The rapper, whose hits "Get Busy" and "Like Glue" are in the top 20 of the Billboard singles chart, was served with the summons shortly after he left the stage, police said. The maximum fine is $20 or community service.

Union Endorsement

Dick Gephardt

Democratic presidential candidate Dick Gephardt picked up his seventh union endorsement Tuesday as the executive board of the 104,000-member International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees unanimously backed his candidacy.

It was the first time in its 110-year history that the union, which represents film and television production employees in the United States and Canada, endorsed a presidential candidate.

Gephardt, whose father was a Teamster, said he is more in touch with everyday working families than resident Bush.

Gephardt is considered the most likely candidate to get an endorsement if the AFL-CIO enters the primary fray. The federation has granted only two early endorsements: Walter Mondale in 1984 and Al Gore in 2000.
