HARPER'S WEEKLY REVIEW
July 22, 2003
CIA director George Tenet testified before the Senate
Intelligence Committee and again took responsibility for
President Bush's false claim that Iraq tried to buy uranium
from Niger, but he admitted that he didn't know the claim,
which he successfully removed from at least one of the
president's previous speeches, would be included in the
State of the Union address. Tenet said that his staff should
have told him about it.
It later emerged that the White
House and the CIA had negotiated over the line, which "the
CIA knew to be incredible." The White House, one senator
said, wanted to know "how far you could go and be close to
the truth."
Resident Bush said that "the intelligence I get
is darn good intelligence and the speeches I have given are
backed by good intelligence," and he told a group of
surprised reporters that Saddam Hussein had refused to
permit weapons inspectors to return to Iraq: "And we gave
him a chance to allow the inspectors in, and he wouldn't let
them in. And therefore, after a reasonable request, we
decided to remove him from power."
A White House official
noted that the resident "is not a fact checker."

Re: King Kong (1976)
The strange reappearance of King Kong...
More of an observation than anything: all of a sudden, AMC's been
showing the 1976 'King Kong' quite a lot in the wee hours -- twice last
week that I know of, in fact. For those out there who don't know why
this would be an odd thing to see these days, this was the one where
Kong climbed the World Trade Center... (And there's even a scene of a
helicopter splatting into the side of the building! Eep.)
So, any
thoughts on whether this has any significance one way or the other? I
feel ghoulish for stopping on it when I channel-surf, it makes me think
of the people who headed for the roof thinking helicopters would be sent
for them... but maybe AMC have decided that the period of mourning is
officially over, or something. It's noteworthy in itself that the film
was kept in the freezer all this time -- and I guess we'll know we're
really over it if they ever dare to show 'Escape From New York' on TV
again, which was last aired AFAIK a couple days after 9/11 and I haven't
seen since...
What might be interesting, if anyone feels up to it yet, would be a
tribute page about films starring the WTC... has anyone undertaken such
a venture? I know I've seen one of "WTC on movie posters", but it might
be nice to have a more comprehensive list of movies that have
inadvertantly become three-hankie weepies. I keep getting blindsided by
the opening of 'Wall Street'...
Samantha Lynn
Thanks, Samantha!
I don't know of any tribute pages of films starring the WTC, but, I'll link if it's out there (& someone sends me the URL).
Or, we could start one here.

In The Chaos Household
Last Night
Still humid, but not as hot. Nothing like that 'sauna-fresh' feeling all day & all night.
Talked to dear old Dad in PA - had a pretty good storm go through, and he's lucky to have electricity. My brother, otoh, has no electricity, and since he needs electricity to run the pump, he also has no running water. No electricity also means no dish & no TV. At least he has the spring out back to chill his beer.
This storm also demolished a good portion of the Kinzua Bridge (pictures below). Glad my pal Deb took the kid & me up there the last time we were back east.
As impressive as the bridge was, the highlight for the kid was picking wild raspberries on our trek to the valley beneath the bridge.

Actor Danny Glover stands in New York's Times Square as his new public service announcement launching a national campaign to fight a 'silent crisis' in men's health is displayed on the marquee outside Broadway's Times Square Studios Monday night July 21,2003. The W.K. Kellogg Foundation sponsored campaign seeks to issue a wake-up call to men in the United States, who's health status has generally deteriorated in recent decades due to neglect on men's part, lack of access for many to health care, underfunded research in male-specific diseases and other barriers to medical care.

Encouraging All to Vote
Dixie Chicks
The Dixie Chicks have hatched a plan to re-enter the political fray with an activist message designed not to offend anyone: vote.
The Texas trio announced Monday that they've joined forces with the Rock the Vote campaign to urge young people to participate in elections. They said they wouldn't advocate a particular political party.
Besides lending their images and music to a Rock the Vote Web site that will guide people through the voter registration process, bandmates Maines, Martie Maguire and Emily Robison said they would urge people at their concerts to become politically active.

Clinton Library
Just a few blocks from the future site of Bill Clinton's $160 million presidential library, a couple of Clinton haters hope to open a museum devoted to mocking his presidency.
"As long as he's talking, we'll have to be here trying to keep him somewhat honest and stop him from rewriting history," says John LeBoutillier, a former Republican congressman from New York who rode Ronald Reagan's coattails to victory in 1980.
LeBoutillier and his partner, Houston businessman Richard Erickson, plan to call it the Counter-Clinton Library. They say the museum here and one planned for Washington will look at such topics as Whitewater, Monica Lewinsky, the last-minute pardons, even damaged White House furniture.
The two partners hope to open their place the same day that Clinton's opens in November 2004. They say they will need $5 million. LeBoutillier says thousands of donations have come in and the average one is $72, but he will not say exactly how much has been raised so far.

'West Wing' First Daughter
Annabeth Gish
Annabeth Gish has been tapped as a recurring cast member on the NBC White House drama "The West Wing," playing Elizabeth Bartlet Westin, President Jed Bartlet's (Martin Sheen) older daughter who has been talked about on the show but has never made an appearance.
Bartlet's younger daughter, Zoey, played by Elisabeth Moss, has been a recurring character on the Emmy-winning drama from John Wells Prods. and Warner Bros. TV.
Gish will make her debut in next season's opening two episodes, which were written by executive producer Wells, who has taken the reins of the series following the May exit of creator/executive producer Aaron Sorkin.

Unhappy With Video Release
Reese Witherspoon
No question about it, Reese Witherspoon--one of
Hollywood's hottest stars--is hot under the collar about the timing of
the advertising for the video release of her 1998 film "Twilight," which
includes some explicit sex scenes with co-star Liev Schreiber. The film
was a box-office bomb--despite a cast that also included Paul Newman,
Susan Sarandon and Gene Hackman. "Twilight" predated by a year
Witherspoon's breakout performance in "Election," soon followed by the
megahits "Legally Blonde" and "Sweet Home Alabama."
A source in Witherspoon's production company says the actress thinks the
video's distributors are merely using the multimillion dollar ad
campaign for her current film "Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde"
to help promote their efforts. Witherspoon is reportedly considering
legal action against the distributors.

Promoter Threatens Toronto Pullout
Rolling Stones
The Rolling Stones' Toronto-based promoter is subtly threatening to pull the group out of its July 30 concert in the Canadian city because of complaints about the show.
Michael Cohl, who's been producing the Stones' world tours since 1989, issued the warning to the Toronto Sun, saying that media complaints about transportation and restrictions on what fans can bring onto the concert grounds have angered him--and could well cause the Stones to reconsider their appearance.
Speaking Sunday (July 20) from a Stones tour stop in Stockholm, Sweden, Cohl told the Sun, "I'm reading too much of this bullsh-t in the Toronto press about the concert. What a bunch of a--holes, pardon my French. It's outrageous. I just hope Mick doesn't read it--even though it's my job to show it to him... [He might say] 'I think I might not come after all. It's not what I signed on for.'... The most important thing I do for the Rolling Stones is make that decision above all others. They look to me to say: 'We can go here to play,' and, 'We can't go here to play.'"
Still, Cohl expressed confidence that things will be in good shape by July 30. "I can't imagine that between ClearChannel Entertainment and House Of Blues and Molson's and... the Toronto Police and the Toronto Emergency Services and all of the same people who looked after the Pope at Downsview last year, that these people aren't going to get it together," Cohl said. "And if I didn't think they were able to get it together, I wouldn't have given them the band."

'Dame Edna' Awarded Honorary Law Degree
Barry Humphries
The University of Melbourne honoured one of its most successful, and flamboyant, drop-outs by awarding an honorary law degree to Barry Humphries -- alter-ego to the wisteria-haired gadfly Dame Edna Everage.
Humphries -- who swapped Dame Edna's trademark jewel-encrusted glasses and lavish dresses for a red academic cloak for the solemn occasion -- attributed his success in life to his failure as a law student in the 50's.
Dame Edna, the wittily snobbish housewife from Moonee Ponds, came to life in 1956 in Humphries' one-man shows "Excuse I" and "A Nice Night's Entertainment".
She went on to become a television and theater megastar, testing the boundaries of political correctness and good taste across continents and famously giving "fellow housewife" Queen Elizabeth some pointers on etiquette during the British monarch's Golden Jubilee concert last year.

1942 Oscar Withdrawn From Auction
Orson Welles
Orson Welles' 1942 Oscar for "Citizen Kane," the centerpiece of an auction of entertainment memorabilia, was withdrawn from the sale when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences exercised its right to buy it back for $1.
"The Oscar has been withdrawn" from the Friday sale, a spokeswoman for Christie's auction house, which had featured the Oscar on the cover of its auction catalog, told The New York Times in Tuesday editions.
Since 1950, all Oscar recipients have had to sign an agreement giving the academy the first right of purchase, for the nominal fee of $1, for any Oscar offered for sale by an owner.
The academy evoked the agreement in the Christie's sale even though the Welles Oscar was won eight years before the agreement came into being.
The Oscar, among a large selection of Welles-related material that was estimated to sell at $300,000 to $400,000, was being sold by Beatrice Welles, the youngest of the filmmaker's three daughters and the sole heir of his estate.
For many years, it had been believed to be lost, and in 1988 Beatrice Welles requested a duplicate from the academy.
"We gave her a duplicate, and fortunately we also had her sign a version of the winner's agreement at that time, which also covered the original, should it ever surface," Davis told the Times.

Included On Live 'Who' Set
Entwistle's Final Show
Out Tuesday (July 22) is the new live album from the Who, Live At The Royal Albert Hall. What distinguishes this set is a bonus disc with four tracks from singer-bassist John Entwistle's final show with the band, which took place February 8, 2002. Entwistle died June 27, 2002, on the eve of the Who's North American tour, from a heart attack brought on by cocaine abuse.
Todd Rundgren was part of Entwistle's final full-scale tour, a Japanese edition of the Beatles tribute A Walk Down Abbey Road in late 2001. He tells LAUNCH that while Entwistle's death was sad, it wasn't surprising. "You knew this thing was haunting him the whole time," Rundgren said, "the fact that, you know, he lived really hard and that he was getting older. And so as sad as it was, I don't think it was a surprise to anybody that that's the way he would go, you know, that he would go on the road, overindulging himself."

Reports in the Daily Mirror tabloid that the actress may have suffered neck and back injuries were denied on her offical website (www.gilliananderson.ws).
Anderson has no fractures or sprains and "was released after a checkup at the hospital and is back home, safe and sound", the website said.

Threatens Veto on Media-Ownership Cap
White House
The Bush administration said on Tuesday it would veto a large government-spending bill if it reimposed media-ownership caps that were recently relaxed by the Federal Communications Commission.
"The Administration believes that the new FCC media ownership rules more accurately reflect the changing media landscape and the current state of network station ownership, while still guarding against undue concentration in the marketplace," the Office of Management and Budget said in a statement.
"If this provision or a provision like it with respect to any one of the other FCC Rules is contained in the final legislation presented to the President, his Senior Advisors would recommend that he veto the bill," OMB said.

Staves Off Foreclosure
Bob Guccione
"Penthouse" magazine's publisher Bob Guccione has staved off a foreclosure sale of his elegant Manhattan digs, which were used as collateral against a $15 million loan, sources said on Tuesday.
Guccione's East 67th Street mansion, which is said to have a swimming pool, was due to go on the block on Tuesday if General Media, the company that publishes Penthouse, did not pay off the loan, according to New Jersey-based specialty lender Kennedy Funding. Kennedy made the loan five years ago.
The sale was postponed after General Media renegotiated its loan with Kennedy late Monday.
The next foreclosure sale would be on August 5th if the loan was not paid, Kennedy Funding said.

Storms Topple Historic PA Bridge
Kinzua
Thunderstorms wrecked part of a historic steel railroad bridge that was once the world's highest and longest, knocked out power to thousands of customers across three states and damaged homes.
Near Mount Jewett, in northwest Pennsylvania, a long section of the 121-year-old Kinzua Viaduct collapsed during the storms Monday afternoon.
"Essentially the middle part of the bridge is gone," said Gretchen Leslie, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Conservation and National Resources, which owns the bridge in Kinzua Bridge State Park.
Crews reported that as many as 12 of the 20 tall towers that carried the half-mile-long bridge across a valley had fallen. In addition, a park ranger suffered a broken leg when a tree collapsed on a building.
The span, made of iron in 1882 and rebuilt using steel in 1900, stood 301 feet high, almost as tall as the Statue of Liberty. It is on the National Register of Historic Civil Engineering Landmarks and National Register of Historic Places.
Last used by freight trains in 1959, it was closed to tourist excursion trains and pedestrians last summer because state officials feared that strong wind could collapse the rusting structure. Crews had started work in February to refurbish it.
