JULY 2009 - THREE SPLENDID MASHUP COLLECTIONS
By DJ Useo
I know you are all (mostly) getting outside & enjoying the Summer sun's rays (work willing). If you have, you've noticed that there's a feeling under the sun this year that is the feeling of hope. I know you've felt it, I certainly have. I think you should take along the latest mashup comps in your mp3 players & enjoy the outdoors July mashup mood. It's been an amazing season for mashup collections with the recent SUMMER BOOTY 2009 & MICHAEL JACKSON compilations, but there's no holdup in great releases as some more big bootleg names sidle up to the bar & present 3 awesome records! All three contain the familiar gone astray, the tame made wild, & the mixer's dream realized. That's the true substance of the hope this Summer. The realized concepts shining in the sun. Pure hope.
First up is a collection that looks at one set of artists, & what a well-known set! What an unlikely choice it seems at first to spotlight the MUPPETS for a mashup comp, but considering their enduring popularity & the twin history of Muppet musical success, you will understand the reasoned approach to this set. DJ BC, he of many a popular past mashup compilation has coordinated & brought into being 'MUPPET MASHUP' ( djbc.net/muppetmashup/ )
This is a record you can enjoy for the glee of the MUPPETS or just as much for the performance of the mixers. The lure of the felt ones is strong & has brought crowd-pleasing names like Dunproofin, McSleazy & Atom onto this project. Once you experience the musi-combo delights of tracks like Martinn's 'The Muppet Strut' (The Muppets vs The Stray Cats) & RIAA's 'Spinning Rubber Sing Thing', you'll be glad you did. I hope they continue this one every year.
Next up is a collection called "It's Britney, Mixed!" / The Britney Spears viral pop tribute. Prepare yourself for seventeen mellifluous mashups that focus in on the Queen of Pop by 9 mixers of considerable ability. Britney has held a fast appeal with the fans & the mixers follow that pattern here with a large batch of bastard pop tunes that build on her appeal. You will hear fantastic mashups like WORLD FAMOUS AUDIO HACKER's 'If You Seek Lucretia' (Britney vs The Sisters Of Mercy), & you will find remix's like TIGER MENDOZA's 'Slave 4 U'. Names of contributors like TEAM 9, Elvis Of Dallas, OSCAR TG, & ARRATIK conjure much past pleasure in the mashup fan. Here they fulfill that promise & that's with using the music & talent of Britney, an artist that admittedly some have percieved as over-played. You won't notice that perception with this release. Get yours now before the bandwidth dissipates ( britney.audiohacker.com/ ) (Don't miss the 2 vids as well)
Now comes a dream bootleg compilation. Not only because of the mixers involved, although they are dream mixers, but because this collection takes a major musical moment in human history & gives us a stunningly new approach to it. Here is the record you never thought would be done - DJ Zebra's 'BOOTSTOCK : Bootlegs From The Original Soundtrack And More'. That's right, you get to hear mashups with COUNTRY JOE And THE FISH, CANNED HEAT, JIMI HENDRIX, THE WHO, & all the rest! This collection was first broadcast on July 4th 2009 in the Zebramix radio broadcast, on Virgin Radio France. I signed up for the show in itunes as a podcast, & I was impressed immediately with the mixing execution of DJ Zebra & his compilation cohorts, Electrosound, Mighty Mike and Totom. DJ ZEBRA's "Wooden Ships On The Moon", ELECTROSOUND's "Who's Zooming The Who", & TOTOM's "Street Sweeper Social Volunteers" are just the tip of the Icestock with this release. If you know of WOODSTOCK, or if you don't (!!!) this is a batch of bootlegs you'll bop to all Summer.
Get yours here ( djzebra.free.fr/Bootstock.html )
Now that'sa some'a great Summer mashup, eh? Thanks for reading & drop me a line if you have a thought to share.
Mix Of The Week - DJ Nak _Freddy M_ - June 09 Summer Mix holds lots of Summery vibe & shares it generously over it's half hour of mixing.

As with their translations of 'Anna Karenina' and 'War and Peace,' Pevear and Volokhonsky have created a lucid document devoid of the stilted phrases that plague many translations. If you're looking to read any Dostoevsky or Tolstoy, I highly recommend their versions. They've cured me of my dread of Russian novels, and that's saying something. In their hands I found 'Crime and Punishment' surprisingly accessible and engaging.

Season Kicks Off October 5
"South Park"
Comedy Central announced Tuesday that the second half of the 15th season of "South Park" will begin October 5 at 10 p.m.
The network has unleashed an onslaught of publicity heralding the long-running cartoon's milestone year, including a deal with Walmart and Frito-Lay to produce 1.5 million bags of Cheesy Poofs, the snack preferred by our portly pal, Eric Cartman.
Comedy Central also announced that it had committed to a second season of the zany sketch series "Nick Swardson's Pretend Time," which will premiere immediately after the fall return of "South Park.
"I am very excited to be back for a second season," said Swardson. "I feel that now, more than ever, our country needs to see a cat in a wheelchair doing cocaine. As do the children."

Rejects Date Request
Betty White
Add one more item to the list of ways in which Betty White and Mila Kunis are very, very different women.
While Kunis has emphatically stated that she will attend the Marine Corps Ball in November with Sgt. Scott Moore, who invited Kunis via a YouTube video, "Hot in Cleveland" actress White has declined a similar request from Marine Sgt. Ray Lewis, who also pitched White over the Internet.
Lewis, a veteran of Afghanistan and Iraq, made his play for the 89-year-old "Golden Globes" alum, noting that he'd show White "a good time" were she to attend the soiree with him.
Sadly for Lewis, White has been forced to decline due to professional obligations.
"I am deeply flattered and truly appreciate the invitation. As everyone knows, I love a man in uniform," White said in a statement provided to TheWrap. "But unfortunately, I cannot accept, as I will be taping an episode of 'Hot In Cleveland.' Love, Betty White."

Producing Feature Film
Oneida Nation
The Oneida Indian Nation is producing a $10 million feature film telling the story of its alliance with American colonists during the Revolutionary War.
Ray Halbritter, the Oneida Indian Nation representative and CEO of Nation Enterprises, says the movie will be shot this fall in central New York. It will be produced by Alex Siskin, producer of "Mr. Deeds." The executive producer is Sid Ganis, former president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Kees Van Oostrum (CASE' van-OH'-strum), Emmy-nominated director of "Miss Rose White" and "Gettysburg," is the director.
The film, "First Allies," is based on the book "Forgotten Allies" by University of Houston historians Joseph Glatthaar and James Kirby Martin.

Hospital News
Jim Nabors
Singer and actor Jim Nabors, star of the 1960s TV series "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.," has been admitted to a Honolulu hospital with a throat infection, a spokesman said on Tuesday.
The 81-year-old Nabors was admitted to Queens Medical Center in Honolulu on Sunday after suffering swelling of his throat, said Stan Cadwallader, the actor's business partner and representative.
Nabors, whose immune system has been compromised since he underwent a liver transplant 17 years ago due to hepatitis C, is responding well to antibiotics, Cadwallader said.
Nabors had been scheduled to sing the U.S. national anthem on Tuesday at a sacred Japanese tea ceremony aboard the USS Arizona Memorial at the Pearl Harbor Naval Base, event representative Lisa Ontai said.

Defends Rupert
Piers Morgan
While Rupert Murdoch (R-Evil Incarnate) testified before Parliament, British TV host Piers Morgan took to Twitter to defend his former boss.
The CNN host has largely declined to address the phone hacking scandal on his nightly prime-time U.S. show, but he tweeted frequently throughout Tuesday's inquiry in support of Murdoch.
For two years in the 1990s, Morgan was editor of the News Corp.-owned News of the World, which ended publication July 10 over allegations that reporters hacked into phone records of crime victims and others.
Morgan was thrust into the dialogue when MP Louise Mensch, in her questioning, suggested Morgan's 2005 autobiography referenced using phone-hacking for scoops. Morgan tweeted that the claim was "complete nonsense."

Claims Jewelry Stolen
Laura Ingraham
Radio talk-show host Laura Ingraham says $11,000 worth of jewelry was taken from her checked luggage and she believes the theft happened at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.
Airport spokesman Ron Marsico says Port Authority police are investigating.
Marsico says Ingraham faxed them a theft report at 7:20 p.m. on Saturday, saying she had taken a Continental Airlines flight out of Newark and discovered later that her bag had been rifled through. The report says a jewelry bag had been opened and that bracelets, necklaces, rings and a gold cross on a gold chain had been stolen.
The Daily Caller first reported the theft. Ingraham told the website that the cross was from her Catholic baptism, had come from the Vatican and had been blessed by the Pope.

"Cash Cab"
Investigators are examining the taxi from the Canadian edition of the TV show "Cash Cab" to see whether it had a mechanical defect that may have contributed to a fatal pedestrian accident, police said on Tuesday.
A member of the show's technical crew was driving the vehicle back to a storage facility late on Saturday when he ran into a 61-year-old man in a crosswalk in Vancouver, city police said. The man died in a local hospital on Sunday.
Vancouver police constable Lindsey Houghton said no charges have been brought in the case and there was no indication that alcohol or weather played a role in the accident.
Separate versions of the series air on the Discovery Channel in the United States and Canada.

Extradition Effort Fails
Randy Quaid
A California prosecutor says U.S. officials have rejected a request to seek the extradition of actor Randy Quaid and his wife from Canada to face felony vandalism charges.
Authorities in Santa Barbara have sought the couple's return for months. Senior Deputy District Attorney Lee Carter says the U.S. State Department notified him last week that it would not pursue extradition.
The Quaids were arrested in September in the coastal city and accused of causing more than $5,000 in damage to a home they once owned. They were no-shows at several court hearings and were arrested in Vancouver, where the actor sought asylum from a group he dubbed "Hollywood star-whackers."
Carter says the "Independence Day" actor and his wife can be arrested if they return to the United States.

Weekends For White Collar Crime
Leigh Morse
A New York City art gallery director will spend weekends in jail for four months after being convicted of selling millions of dollars' worth of works without telling their owners.
Leigh Morse apologized "for causing people pain and suffering" before she was sentenced Tuesday. She's free until Aug. 6. She also has to pay about $1.6 million in restitution.
Morse was convicted in April of scheming to defraud four artists' estates. The trial brought Robert De Niro to the witness stand because Morse was accused - but acquitted - of a grand larceny charge involving his father's estate.
The case stemmed from former gallery owner Lawrence Salander's $120 million in swindles of his star-studded clientele. Salander pleaded guilty and is in prison.

Erects Pay Wall
Time Magazine
Time magazine joined the list of publications putting up a pay wall on Tuesday, but it also offered its subscribers an "all-access" plan for the magazine across all platforms.
Starting Thursday, readers can purchase the $30 plan, which includes both print and web subscriptions, as well as an app for the iPad and other tablets.
Two other options are the one-week pass to access magazine content online ($4.99/week) and a monthly all-access subscription ($2.99/month).
Those who sign up for none of those plans can still read articles on the website, but they will not have access to articles from the magazine for three months. The Time release says that 95 percent of the site's content is original and distinct from the magazine.

Nazi Memoirs To Auction
Josef Mengele
The diaries of Nazi war criminal Josef Mengele, the so-called "Angel of Death" are to be sold by auction in the US.
The diaries, written after the end of the Second World War when Mengele had fled to Latin America, contain his philosophical reflections, autobiographical stories and poems written between 1960 and 1975.
Thursday's auction will include some 3,500 pages from "hidden journals" written by the doctor who carried out terrible medical experiments on prisoners at Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.
The items, mostly small, spiral-bound notebooks, are expected to fetch between £185,000 and £247,000 when they go under the hammer at Connecticut-based auctioneers Alexander Autographs .

Universal Pulls Plug
Stephen King's "The Dark Tower"
"The Dark Tower" sleeps with fishes.
Universal's ambitious adaptation of Stephen King's fantasy series has been canceled, TheWrap has confirmed.
The first film was slated to begin production this summer, but shooting was delayed last spring with the studio announcing that it needed to make the project more cost-effective.
That temporary delay became permanent this week, and now deprives Universal of a film series that it had hoped to make a linchpin for its film slate for years to come.
All told, the project was supposed to involve three movies and a television series.

David Ngoombujarra
David Ngoombujarra, one of Australia's best known indigenous actors whose films included "Australia" and "Rabbit-Proof Fence," has died. He was 44.
The actor was found in a park Sunday and died at a hospital in Fremantle, near Perth on Australia's west coast. Police have not determined the cause but said his death was not suspicious.
Two of his acclaimed films were "Rabbit-Proof Fence" and "Black and White," both released in 2002 and based on true stories of Australia's indigenous people.
"Rabbit-Proof Fence" won best film from the Australian Film Institute. Ngoombujarra won one of his three AFI awards for "Black and White," in which he played an Aborigine convicted of killing a young white girl.
Ngoombujarra also won AFI awards for "Blackfellas" in 1993 and the Australian television show, "The Circuit."
