Weekly Review

HARPER'S WEEKLY REVIEW

July 15, 2003

The White House admitted that Resident Bush's claim in his last State of the Union address that Iraq had tried to buy uranium from Niger was based on "unsubstantiated" intelligence; George Tenet, the director of central intelligence, took the blame for the president's discredited claim and said that "these 16 words should never have been included in the text written for the president."

Tom Daschle, the Senate minority leader, said that this matter "ought to be reviewed very carefully."

Howard Dean, the former governor of Vermont and a Democratic presidential candidate, said that "this government either is inept or simply has not told us the truth." Resident Bush, asked whether he regretted his false claim about the uranium, responded by saying there was "no doubt" in his mind that he was right to conquer Iraq. "And there's no doubt in my mind, when it's all said and done, the facts will show the world the truth."

Condoleezza Rice, the national security adviser, said that the president's discredited claim was still technically a true statement: "The British government did say that."

American soldiers continued to die in Iraq, and the U.S. Central Command reported an average of 13 armed attacks on American forces each day.

Raises $2 Million

Carlos Santana

Rock guitarist Carlos Santana will donate at least $2 million in net profits from his U.S. tour to fighting AIDS in South Africa, a charity official said on Tuesday.

The 23-city "Shaman" tour, which ended on Monday at the Hollywood Bowl, benefited a fund set up by Artists for a New South Africa (ANSA) to provide grants for South African organizations combating the disease.

The estimate was given by ANSA executive director Sharon Gelman, who said final numbers are still being tallied. Santana himself pleaded ignorance on the financials.

"I don't know man, I'm not an accountant," he told Reuters. "I'm with the notes. I'm not with numbers."

Settle Lawsuit

'The Exorcist' Creators

The author of "The Exorcist" and the director of the 1973 movie of the same name have settled their lawsuit against Warner Bros., which claimed the studio shortchanged them.

Warner Bros. spokeswoman Barbara Brogliatti said Monday the case had been settled and all claims were dismissed, but the terms of the settlement wouldn't be disclosed.

The lawsuit, filed in May 2001, had been scheduled to go to trial this week.

William Peter Blatty, who wrote the novel and screenplay, and director William Friedkin, claimed Warner Bros. breached its fiduciary duty by self-dealing the rights for a newer version of the film, "The Exorcist — The Version You've Never Seen," released three years ago. They claim the studio would sell the rights to its sister cable television networks TNT and TBS for little to no profit.

Under their original 1971 deal, Warner granted Blatty the right to 39 percent of the net profit of the film; Friedkin later was granted the right to 10 percent of the net profit.

Senators Try to Roll Back

FCC Media Rules

A bipartisan group of U.S. senators on Tuesday launched efforts to veto a relaxation of media ownership limits by federal regulators that make it easier for giant media companies to gobble up more outlets.

The legislative maneuver would rescind new Federal Communications Commission rules allowing television networks to own more local stations and permitting a company to own a newspaper, television station and radio outlets in a market.

The resolution to overturn the FCC's rules enjoys widespread support in the U.S. Senate but faces opposition by Republican leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The Senate resolution to veto the rules was co-sponsored by Democrat Sens. Russ Feingold of Wisconsin, Ernest Hollings of South Carolina, John Kerry of Massachusetts and Ron Wyden of Oregon and Republican Sens. Lott, Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine, and Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas.

Back On Disco Tour

Harry Wayne Casey

Harry Wayne Casey has been shaking his booty across America for three decades, and this summer he plans to kick that booty into high gear once again.

Of course, most people know H.W. Casey as "KC," as in KC & The Sunshine Band, the 1970s disco act that still tours the country and is part of "Get Up 'N Dance!," a new tour starting in August and also featuring the Village People, Thelma Houston and Anita Ward.

Casey, 52, got his start in the music business as a teenager in Florida. But by the mid-1980s, the dance icon had left the business following a serious car accident that took him out of the spotlight for nearly a year around the time that the disco craze faded.

But by the early 1990s, a growing appetite for anything retro, particularly from the 1970s, breathed new life into his material, eventually bringing him back to the stage and inspiring him to seek rehabilitation.

Additionally, a lot of 1970's disco music and riffs are being sampled into popular hip-hop music and have found their way into popular commercials.

Sues Over Photos

Cameron Diaz

Actress Cameron Diaz has asked a court to bar the release of photos taken during a private modeling session more than a decade ago, a spokesman said on Tuesday, amid a criminal investigation into the man trying to sell the pictures.

The "Charlie's Angels" star claims in a lawsuit that her signature was forged on a release for the pictures produced by a Los Angeles photographer and that she never gave permission for them to be made public.

Jane Robison, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office confirmed that "evidence" had been seized from the home of photographer John Rutter but declined to say what was found or elaborate on the probe.

A spokesman for Diaz could not be reached to characterize the photos, which were taken before she became a major Hollywood star. Rutter, who has not been charged with a crime, was not immediately available for comment.

Gap Ad Campaign

Madonna

Madonna will be the new face for Gap's fall multimillion dollar ad campaign.

Gap spokeswoman Claudia Hawkins would give few details on the campaign, set to break July 28, other than to say the campaign also features rap star Missy Elliott.

Over the past several years, Gap has enlisted a diverse group of celebrities for its advertising, including actors Christina Ricci, Anjelica Huston, and Dennis Hopper. But experts believe signing the pop icon is the biggest coup yet for the retailer, which needs additional buzz to continue its turnaround.

Uncertain About Status of ABC Shows

Drew Carey

Drew Carey says he's uncertain about the status of his two ABC shows, his self-titled sitcom and "Whose Line Is It Anyway?"

According to the actor-comedian, ABC isn't giving him any answers because he doesn't think they know themselves. Neither show is on the fall schedule.

"I know the production's starting (soon) and we're doing the shows ... but in terms of when or if they're going to air, you got me. I have no idea," he told AP Radio.

Reality TV

Roseanne Barr

With help from a team of rabbis, a 16-character multiple-personality disorder and at least one ex-husband, the shrill "domestic goddess" Roseanne Barr has transformed her struggle to treat people decently into a reality TV show.

Installments of the 13-episode "The Real Roseanne Show" are scheduled to debut 9 p.m. EDT Aug. 6 on ABC.

Produced by Barr and "The War Room" documentarian R.J. Cutler, the show chronicles her efforts to start a new cooking program called "Domestic Goddess." It features her wolfing doughnuts with celebrity friends such as Sandra Bernhard, and consulting numerous rabbis to help her deal with psychological problems and the people around her.

After the six-week series ends, the cooking program "Domestic Goddess" will begin running on ABC's Family cable channel.

Barr, who won an Emmy in 1993 for her performance on "Roseanne," the long-running sitcom that made her a star, also was host of "The Roseanne Show," a daytime talk program that aired from 1998 to 2000.

She changed her name to Roseanne Arnold after her short-lived marriage to comic Tom Arnold, then went by the solo moniker Roseanne for a time. That made it difficult to travel abroad, she said, since her one-name passport sparked suspicion, so she restored her original surname.

Judge OKs Breath Test Results

Diana Ross

Results of breath tests taken from pop singer Diana Ross can be used as evidence in her case, a judge has ruled.

Ross, 59, faces three drunken driving-related charges in Tucson City Court after being stopped by police on Dec. 30. She has pleaded innocent.

The trial is scheduled to begin Sept. 9.

Her lawyer, Stephen Paul Barnard, said he'll appeal the decision.

Police said Ross had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.20 percent. The legal limit in Arizona is 0.08 percent.

MSGOP's Gamble

Jesse Ventura

Jesse Ventura broke his uncharacteristic six-month silence in interviews with the Star Tribune and the St. Paul Pioneer Press, sharing his thoughts on politics, his new private-sector job hosting a talk show on the MSNBC cable network and his pal Arnold Schwarzenegger possibly running for governor in California.

Aside from two appearances on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" and an interview with Parade magazine, Ventura has ignored the news media, choosing to work silently behind the scenes on his talk show.

The show has been delayed so many times that there are rumors it might be canceled before it premieres. Ventura had plenty to say about the media "jackals" who interpret his lack of a launch date as a sign of the show's failure.

"The media likes to jump on people who fail," he said. "They smack their lips like they're putting ketchup on a hamburger. But we're not going to fall into any traps. We're going to take our time."

MSNBC president Erik Sorenson said the show has taken a long time to develop partly because of trying to fit Ventura into a conventional news format.

But not anymore.

"He's not a journalist. He doesn't even like them," Sorenson said. "So we're going for broke. We're in a position where we have to gamble."

They now plan a much looser show with guests offering competing viewpoints on a topical subject and Ventura acting more as a judge than as a moderator.

There probably will be a field of reporters, including Ventura's son, Tyrel.

"MSNBC was so enthusiastic about him," Ventura said. "How long has Pat Kessler been at WCCO? Ty is only 23 and he's jumping up a whole level."

Unpaid Bills

Mike Tyson

Embattled former world heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson's psychiatrist has sued him for allegedly failing to pay 29,000 dollars in therapy bills, court documents showed.

Analyst Mitchell Gibson alleges that Tyson failed to stump up for his costly forays into the controversial boxer's mind, according to a filing in a court in the Los Angeles-area town of Santa Monica.

The "Celebrity Justice" television show said the fighter, famous for biting off part of Evander Holyfield's ear and for his many brushes with the law, began seeing Gibson following his release from a three-month jail stint for assault in 2000.

Gibson claims that he treated Tyson for a fee of 8,000 dollars a month and asked charged him an extra 6,000 for emergency cross-country visits.

The psychiatrist, who is based in Tempe in the western state of Arizona, entered Tyson's life at one of its many low-points.

Gibson has written books on the subject of mental illness and also lectures and writes on astrology and the paranormal.

A hearing in the case was set for October 9 in Santa Monica, court records showed.
