HARPER'S WEEKLY REVIEW
June 10, 2003
Resident George W. Bush staged a handshake between the
Israeli and Palestinian prime ministers at a summit meeting
in Jordan.
Resident Bush, Prime Ministers Ariel Sharon and
Mahmoud Abbas, and King Abdullah II of Jordan stood outdoors
together in the hot sun wearing suits and ties but were kept
free of unsightly perspiration by tubes installed by White
House operatives that blasted cold air from an ultra-quiet
air conditioner that was hidden nearby.
Sharon and Abbas
read statements about the "road map" to peace that were
largely written by American officials. "I think when you
analyze the statements, you'll find them to be historic,"
Bush told reporters later. "Amazing things were said."
Resident Bush flew over
Iraq shortly after he told U.S. troops in Qatar that Iraqi
weapons of mass destruction would eventually be found.
"We're on the look," he said. "We'll reveal the truth."
Officials said that the president did not set foot in Iraq
because the situation on the ground was too risky. There
were also concerns that such a visit would appear too
"imperial."

Hollywood Walk O'Fame Star #2228
Ray Harryhausen
Ray Harryhausen, the stop.m,otion animation master who gave life to legions of movie monsters, received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Tuesday.
The special-effects whiz, who turns 83 on June 29, told the crowd gathered for the Hollywood Boulevard ceremony that he was inspired at age 13 after watching a huge ape scale the Empire State building on a screen across the street.
"It all started at Grauman's Chinese Theatre when I was a kid and saw the movie 'King Kong,'" he said. "Seventy years have gone by and I have a star near where it all started."
He was joined at the Walk of Fame ceremony by fantasy writer Ray Bradbury and horror-film afficianado Forrest J. Ackerman, the founder of "Famous Monsters of Filmland" magazine.
The computer-animated comedy "Monsters Inc." featured a tribute to him: two of the creatures dine at a restaurant called "Harryhausen's."

Becomes Pitch Man for France
Woody Allen
Film director Woody Allen, known for his fierce devotion to New York, is working as a pitch man for France, urging Americans to eat french fries, to French kiss and travel to the European nation.
"Recently there has been a lot of controversy between the two countries, and I would hope that now the two countries could put all that behind them and start to build on what really has been a great, great friendship," he said in the video, called "Let's Fall in Love Again."
Allen, who has worked with the French tourist office before, said he doesn't want to refer to his french-fried potatoes as "freedom fries."
"And I don't have to 'freedom kiss' my wife when what I really want to do is French kiss her," Allen added.

Called Best of Past 25 Years
'Smells Like Teen Spirit'
Here they are now, entertaining us — or at least entertaining VH1, which named Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" the greatest song of the past quarter-century. The Seattle band's groundbreaking grunge anthem is No. 1 on VH1's list of the "100 Greatest Songs of the Past 25 Years."
The whole countdown will air over five nights, starting at 10 p.m. EDT Monday on the video music channel. The series will feature clips of videos and performances by the artists along with interviews from musicians and celebrities discussing why the songs matter.
While no one performer or group dominated the countdown, which was chosen by a panel of VH1 executives, several had two songs featured.
In May 2001, VH1 picked the 100 greatest videos of all time; Jackson's "Thriller," a 17-minute mini-movie, was No. 1, but it didn't even make the list this time.

'Buffy' Creator Speaks on Silent Episode
Joss Whedon
One of the scariest experiences that ever faced "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" creator Joss Whedon was being stuck speechless while writing for the show.
Renowned for the series' clever wordplay, Whedon said he worried that his young monster hunter relied too much on Valley Girl dialogue. So he ditched it all, for one time only.
The result was "Hush," an episode in which grinning ghouls known as the Gentlemen steal all the voices from the town of Sunnydale. The show was released on DVD Tuesday as part of the series' fourth season boxed set.
In one scene, Buffy's mentor, Giles, writes on an overhead projector that only a human scream can kill the monsters. "Taking a deep breath, Buffy let's out her best yell. Not a peep. Makes a 'that's not gonna work' face," the script reads.
"That to me was one of the most perfect little jewels I got to create," Whedon said of the episode. The only thing harder? ... two seasons later, writing the musical episode "Once More With Feeling," he said.

DOJ Pride
Attorney General John Ashcroft will allow gay and lesbian Justice Department employees to hold an annual gathering at agency headquarters if they foot the bill, a move critics said Tuesday was a clumsy reversal of a previous decision.
Agency spokesman Mark Corallo said the intention was not to block the group from holding the event, only to make it clear it would not be officially sponsored by the department. That means the group's members must pay any costs themselves.
Allison Nichol, vice president of DOJ Pride, disputed that. She said the organization was told clearly last week they could not hold the event in the Great Hall, the Justice Department courtyard or a conference room - even if they paid for it.
Reports of the denial prompted outrage among gay and lesbian groups and from Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., who wrote an angry letter to Ashcroft questioning the Justice Department's commitment to fairness.
Lautenberg issued a statement Tuesday calling the new policy "the politics of a cover-up" and said he would urge hearings by the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee into possible violations of civil rights stemming from the incident.

MTV Show Host
Tom Green
After turning television inside out with his confrontational and often shocking comedy sketches, Tom Green is turning to a far more traditional genre: the hour-long, late-night talk show.
"The New Tom Green Show" will air weeknights starting at midnight EDT June 23 on MTV, the network that first aired his self-titled Canadian TV series in the United States in the 1990s.
The 31-year-old comedian will wear a suit and perform a monologue, then sit behind a desk and interview celebrity guests. He'll also mix in some comedy segments.

Draws Crowd During S.C. Visit
Snoop Dogg
Snoop Dogg was just trying to visit his grandmother, but a quick stop at a convenience store to ask for directions sparked a wildfire of gossip.
The 31-year-old rapper, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, was between shows in Charlotte, N.C., and Myrtle Beach. He hadn't visited family in South Carolina since he was a toddler, so he decided to drop by his grandmother's home Saturday evening.
"Oh, I was so glad to see him," said 92-year-old Corine Broadus. "He came home from California when he was small, maybe 3 or 2. He's a man now."
Despite hundreds of fans who gathered outside her home, the two-hour visit was pleasant, Broadus said.
"It's twice he's come to see me. Bless his heart. Some of his music is all right. But I believe in the church. I told him he could just leave some parts of that other out. He said, `Oh, Big Momma, nothing wrong with it. I gotta make a living.' He looked good and healthy," she said.

Queen Visits To Boost Tourism
'Legoland'
Britain's Queen Elizabeth came face-to-face with herself -- in Lego bricks -- during a visit to a children's theme park intended to promote flagging tourism.
At Legoland, the Queen was joined by her husband, Prince Philip, on his 82nd birthday.
Waving to the crowds, the pair paid a visit to Mini Land, where they surveyed a Lego model of Edinburgh Castle and an eight-foot high recreation of London's landmark BT Tower.
Prince Philip appeared fascinated by the models and pointed out a couple of errors in the recreation of Buckingham Palace -- milkmen delivering to the wrong door and gray, rather than brown, horses pulling a royal carriage in the courtyard.

Ludacris
Ludacris will not perform at the Jackson County Fair as originally scheduled this summer amid concerns over his lyrics.
The fair's manager and the rapper canceled the Aug. 7 show on Monday, a day before the Fair Board, responding to public criticism, planned a special meeting to discuss the performance.
"I just don't want the rotten language," Clifford Herl, R-Rives Junction, a county commissioner and member of the Fair Board, told The Jackson Citizen Patriot.
County commissioner and Fair Board member Gail Mahoney, D-Jackson, said she would have voted to let the show go on.
"To let the squeaky wheel get the attention isn't right if we're trying to present a well-rounded program," she said.

Beck
Beck is nursing some wounds after getting slammed in the ribs during the Field Day Festival in New Jersey this weekend.
The accident happened Saturday when the musician was on the side of the stage at Giants Stadium watching Blur perform, according to Beck's Web site. A stage hand accidentally slammed him in the ribs.
Beck canceled his show because medics on the scene feared he had broken a rib and would risk a punctured lung if he performed. An X-ray at the hospital showed no broken bones. Beck tried to do an acoustic set later "but the complicated logistics of the festival made it impossible," according to a statement on his Web site.

Philippines To Auction Properties
Ferdinand Marcos
More than two million dollars' worth of prime property seized from the estate of the late Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos are to go on the block this week, officials said.
Proceeds from Tuesday's auctions would cover part of the 43 billion pesos (804 million dollars) of the tax liabilities of the Marcos estate, Finance Secretary Eric Recto told reporters Monday.
The government seized the assets after the heirs failed to pay estate tax within six months as required by law.
The estate originally owed the government 23 billion pesos (430 million dollars) in taxes but this ballooned to 43 billion pesos due to penalties and accrued interest, Recto said.

Many unusual phenomena have been reported within the Zone of Silence, an area of some 342,000 hectares, such as compasses spinning wildly and radios not functioning. Although most experts reject the claims of paranormal or unusual occurences, the desert landscape, also a valuable environmental reserve, maintains a mystique which attracts curiosity and fascination.

Rod Stewart
Rod Stewart's greatest hits are coming to the stage in a new London musical, "Tonight's the Night," that will open on the West End in the fall.
The show at the Victoria Palace Theater will feature some 22 songs from the back catalogue of Stewart, 58, who met the press Tuesday to lend support for the 5 million pounds (dlrs 8.25 million) rock musical.
"It's astounding," said Stewart, who led the standing ovation following the presentation. At the same time, the singer expressed no interest in writing a show from scratch as colleagues Elton John and Randy Newman have.

Exhibit Showcases Other Writings
Anne Frank
Millions have read "The Diary of Anne Frank," but a new exhibition draws attention to some of the Jewish schoolgirl's lesser-known talents for writing fairy tales, short stories and social commentary.
The exhibition, opening on Thursday at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, will show for the first time a collection of Frank's other writings, some of which were taken from bank vaults and have never been publicly displayed, the museum's director, Sara Bloomfield, said.
The "Anne Frank the writer: An unfinished story" exhibition is part of the Holocaust Memorial Museum's 10th anniversary commemorations. It runs until Sept. 12.

Facing Legal Threat
Lap Dancing in LA
Lap dancing could be on its way out in Los Angeles under a proposal that would put dancers at the city's strip clubs out of reach behind 30-inch-high rails.
Touching of any kind between entertainers and customers at adult clubs would also be banned under an ordinance that would require dancers to stay at least 6 feet away from patrons.
The proposal was passed on Monday by a Los Angeles city council committee after residents complained of prostitution, furtive sex acts and excessive noise from adult clubs near their homes.
But the measure, which must win the approval of the full city council, was compared by the thriving adult entertainment industry in Los Angeles to draconian morality laws imposed by the former Taliban government in Afghanistan.

Actor's Leg Amputated
Guillaume Depardieu
French actor Guillaume Depardieu had his right leg amputated to end years of pain from a bacterial infection, friends said Tuesday.
The 32-year-old son of French film star Gerard Depardieu fell off a motorcycle in 1996 and needed several operations, one of which led to a bacterial infection.
Last month, Depardieu created a foundation to raise money to research infectious diseases that are spread in hospitals. People close to the foundation announced that he had gone through the operation.
