HARPER'S WEEKLY REVIEW
May 6, 2003
The United States, the United Nations, Russia, and the
European Union, acting collectively as "the Quartet,"
presented Israel and Palestine with the famous "road map" to
peace that President Bush promised to reveal once the
Palestinians acquired a prime minister independent of Yasir
Arafat.
UNICEF reported that since the beginning of the second
Palestinian intifada 92 Israeli and 436 Palestinian children
have been killed.
American soldiers shot and killed 15 Iraqi
civilians who were demonstrating against the occupation on
Saddam Hussein's birthday; a few days later another
demonstration was held to protest the killings, and soldiers
shot a few more.
Anonymous Bush Administration officials
were beginning to speak more candidly about the president's
rationale for invading Iraq, saying that Iraq's potential as
a military threat was less important than its strategic
location and the president's desire to make a "global show
of American power and democracy."
Officials continued to
play down the possibility that any significant weapons of
mass destruction would be found in Iraq; one senior White
House source speculated that what might turn up were some
"precursors," and said that Saddam Hussein "couldn't put
them together as long as the inspections were going on."
Resident Bush landed on an aircraft carrier in an S-3B
Viking airplane and, clad in a military jumpsuit with the
words "Commander in Chief" printed on the back, he informed
the assembled sailors, whom he said were "the best of our
country," that the war on Iraq had been won.
The commander
in chief, who served as a pilot in the Texas National Guard
during the Vietnam War, told reporters that he had briefly
flown the airplane. "I miss flying," he said.
Few publications mentioned the resident's long unexplained
failure to report for duty during that period, and his
daring arrival was widely hailed as a "Top Gun moment."
The Bush Administration proposed giving the Central
Intelligence Agency and the Pentagon the power to issue
"administrative subpoenas" for personal and financial
information on American citizens without court approval.
Attorney General John Ashcroft revealed that the Justice
Department used secret warrants 1,228 times last year.

Hi Bartcop Fan -
Found this story tonight - a little more background on 'S.T.O.P.'
"Several West Coast rappers including Daz, Everlast, Defari, J-Ro, Tray Deee, Soopafly, RBX, Dilated Peoples, WC, and Mac Minister have teamed up with producer Fred Wreck to record a new song, "S.T.O.P. (Stop The Oppressive Politics)."
Fred Wreck explained the collaboration to Allhiphop.com, saying, "We all had different views that were basically the same thing. I just gave everyone a platform to express that."
The song will only be available online due to its strong content. Fans can also download the instrumental at fredwreck.com.
Why make the instrumental available for fans? The producer said, "We didn't do this to make money, we did it to send a message. So we are also going to make the instrumental available for download so other people can rap on the beat and express their views too." "

This Week On 'Now With Bill Moyers'
Bill Gates
This week on his newsmagazine show, Bill Moyers interviews Bill Gates.
But not about computers. About global health.
In a special edition of "Now with Bill Moyers" (airing Friday at 9 p.m. EDT on most PBS stations), the Microsoft multibillionaire reflects on terrible numbers like these: 11 million children die every year from preventable diseases; of the 5 million babies who die within their first month, 98 percent are from poor countries.
"What do these statistics tell you about the world?" Moyers asks him.
"It really is a failure of capitalism," replies Gates, who's channeling a huge chunk of the wealth it brought him to help fix its inequities.
"Our mandate from PBS was to tell stories nobody else is telling and put on people who have no forum elsewhere," says Moyers, a veteran journalist who, since "Now" premiered in January 2002, has strived to blend breaking-news currency with a contemplative pace.

$4 Million 'SNL' Deal
Tina Fey
Tina Fey, head writer of NBC's "Saturday Night Live" and co-anchor with Jimmy Fallon of the show's mock newscast, has clinched a two-year deal valued at nearly $4 million that includes her writing and performing duties on "SNL" as well as the development of a primetime comedy for the network.
Fey, "SNL's" head writer since the 1999-2000 season, is the first woman to hold the post. She won an Emmy last year as part of the show's writing team. Several skits she has written, including this season's innuendo-filled "Colonel Angus" sketch, have become part of the show's lore. Fey also was recently named one of People magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People.

Returns to Guthrie for a Night
Hume Cronyn
In an intimate setting, stage and screen star Hume Cronyn shared tales about Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor and Tallulah Bankhead to an audience at Guthrie Theater.
Alfred Hitchcock was the best director he's worked with, said the 91-year-old Cronyn, who was the first member of the Guthrie's nascent acting company in 1963.
His conversation Monday night with Guthrie artistic director Joe Dowling was part of a celebration leading up to Wednesday's 40th anniversary of the founding of the theater by Sir Tyrone Guthrie.
In the theater's inaugural season, Cronyn and his wife, Jessica Tandy, who died in 1994 after 52 years of marriage, played leading characters. His roles included, in repertory, Harpagon in Moliere's "The Miser" and Willy Loman in "Death of a Salesman."

Broadway Vampire Show
Elton John & Bernie Taupin
Elton John and Bernie Taupin dreamed of writing music to Anne Rice's literary look at vampires more than 25 years ago. Now will they get their wish.
The rock star and lyricist partner announced on Tuesday that they are collaborating for a Broadway show based on Rice's Vampire Chronicles, tentatively titled "The Vampire Lestat," and aimed for the 2005 theatrical season.
John and Taupin stressed the production would have a classical feel and not resemble a rock opera.
The venture will mark the first stage musical for Taupin, whose songs with John have sold over 150 million copies since they began creating hits in the late 1960s. The vampire show will be John's third Broadway musical, following his work on hit shows "The Lion King," and "Aida."
"You're not going to see capes and bats or crosses or tap-dancing vampires," said Taupin.
"This will be dark, sexy and scary, but that doesn't mean it has to be cliched. This is serious, not a parody."

DJs Suspended for Playing Dixie Chicks
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Country station KKCS has suspended two disc jockeys for playing the Dixie Chicks, violating a ban imposed after the group criticized resident Bush.
"We pulled their music two months ago, and it's been a difficult decision because how can you ignore the hottest group in country music," station manager Jerry Grant said.
He said there has been discussion about whether to reinstate the music, but the DJs, Dave Moore and Jeff Singer, became impatient.
"They made it very clear that they support wholeheartedly the president of the United States. They support whole heartedly the troops, the military. But they also support the right of free speech," Grant said.
Grant said Moore and Singer will be out for a couple of days.

Ted Nugent
Two Denver disc jockeys stopped a live radio interview with rocker Ted Nugent after he used derogatory racial terms for Asians and blacks.
Rick Lewis and Michael Floorwax, morning talk show hosts on KRFX-FM, said that during an interview Monday, Nugent said one of the members of the Funk Brothers years ago complimented his guitar playing by using a racist term for blacks.``
We've known Ted a long time and he's been on the show many times. So when he went down that road, we stopped him and gave him a chance to bail himself out, but he didn't take it,'' Floorwax said.
Nugent also used derogatory racial terms for Asians on the air.

Moving From Hometown
James Dean Gallery
The curator of a gallery of James Dean memorabilia plans to move the display from the movie star's hometown.
The new location in Gas City is less than 10 miles north of Dean's hometown of Fairmount, but gallery owner David Loehr hopes the new site's proximity to Interstate 69 will attract more visitors.
About 10,000 people visit the James Dean Memorial Gallery each year to see artifacts like a liquor flask that belonged to Dean, a piece of Dean's car and paintings of Dean. That's more than three times the population of Fairmount and nearly twice that of Gas City.
Officials in Fairmount, which plays host to a James Dean festival each September, said they did not expect the gallery's move to distract people coming to see where the actor grew up and was buried after his 1955 death in a car crash.

History of Hip-Hop Tour
Imagine Yoko Ono directing sightseers through the Dakota. Or Elvis leading a tour of Tupelo.
That's how history is written on the Hip-Hop Cultural Sightseeing Tour of the Bronx and Harlem parks, clubs and neighborhoods where the culture was born. The guides are the very pioneers who created today's global, multibillion-dollar industry.
On a recent Saturday, the bus stopped in a Bronx restaurant, where tourists were joined by the DJ considered the father of hip-hop: Kool Herc.
In the early 1970s, Herc began playing the instrumental segments of songs over and over while speaking in rhyme over his microphone. Still a DJ after three decades, Herc said he got involved with the tour because "it's giving back to the kids that don't know their history."
Said L.A. Sunshine, a member of the 1970s group The Treacherous Three: "If you're going to call yourself part of the hip-hop culture, you've got to know the true essence of it, where it originated from. If not, you're being fake."

Memorabilia Snapped Up
Roy Rogers-Dale Evans
Most of the best items from the closed Roy Rogers-Dale Evans Museum are in Branson, Mo., but 300 fans and collectors eagerly snapped up memorabilia collected by the cowboy couple that didn't make the cut.
Rogers and Evans collected about 100,000 items. Included in Saturday's auction were 50 coffee mugs, Hanukkah candles, Christmas creches, mounted game heads and guns. A set of alcoholic beverage swizzle sticks and a wine carafe bearing Rogers' initials went for $80.
"He came from the old school; he didn't have anything as a kid, so when he got something, he kept it," said his 57-year-old son, Roy "Dusty" Rogers Jr.
"But what do you do with 10,000 cigarette lighters or ball point pens?" he said.

Baby News
Edward & Sophie
The youngest son of Britain's Queen Elizabeth, Edward, Earl of Wessex, and his wife Sophie, are expecting their first child in December after a dangerous failed pregnancy left them devastated in 2001.
"Their Royal Highnesses the Earl and Countess of Wessex are very pleased to announce that the Countess of Wessex is expecting a baby in December," Buckingham Palace said in a statement on Tuesday.
The announcement came some 18 months after Sophie, then 36, was airlifted to hospital and underwent a 2-1/2 hour operation to end a potentially life-threatening ectopic pregnancy, in which the fetus grew outside her womb.

Painting Fetches 3.4 Million Euros
Magritte
A painting by Rene Magritte, Belgium's renowned surrealist artist, has fetched more than three million euros at an auction to raise money for former employees of Sabena, the country's defunct flagship carrier.
The painting, entitled "L'Oiseau de Ciel" (Sky Bird), sold for 3.4 million euros ($3.82 million), almost three times the asking price, at the sale in a hangar at Brussels international airport late on Monday.
The painting, which was commissioned by the Belgian airline in 1965, was the most important work by the surrealist painter to go under the hammer for the past two decades.
It depicts the silhouette of a bird resembling a dove with its body filled with clouds. Set against a blue sky, the bird is flying above a lit runway.

Trilogy Set For DVD
'Indiana Jones'
The "Indiana Jones" trilogy is whipping into DVD.
Harrison Ford's bullwhip-snapping, fedora-wearing, fistfighting archaeologist will debut in the digital format for the first time on Nov. 4, Paramount Home Entertainment and Lucasfilm Ltd. said Tuesday.
The three movies, directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by George Lucas, have previously been available only on VHS tapes, which has inferior picture and sound quality compared to DVD.
Behind-the-scenes documentaries, cast and crew interviews and other special features will be presented on a fourth disc.
The films will be available only as a collection, priced at about $49.95.

'A Clockwork Orange'
A student teacher at Derby (Conn.) High School has been placed on leave while school officials look into a movie controversy.
The teacher is under investigation for showing the movie "A Clockwork Orange" to a contemporary issues class.
The investigation was the result of a complaint from school board member Walter Mayhew, whose son Garrett, 18, is a student in the class.
"The superintendent and the principal have both said the film is inappropriate so really there's not much left," Mayhew, a pastor of the Christian Community Church, said Monday.
The movie was released in 1972 and was directed by Stanley Kubrick. The movie is set in futuristic London and is based on a book by Anthony Burgess.

San Antonio Park Police say they've received dozens of complaints about a man riding his bike in the park wearing only a black thong.
The 52-year-old man said he'll keep on pedaling because it's his legal right.
"We all claim to believe in the value of personal liberty, but we don't," Joseph Gottschalk said Monday. "No one person has the right to outrank the law and tell me what to wear."
By law, Gottschalk is allowed to wear the thong as long as it covers the appropriate parts. Park Police Capt. Raymond Castro said, "He's within his civil rights and legal rights to wear his thong."

Blocks Naming Baby 'Superman'
Sweden
It's a bird. It's a plane, but it's not Superman.
At least not in Sweden, where a couple who wanted to name their child after the comic book hero found the law harder to bend than the man of steel himself.
The tax authority, which oversees rules for names in the Scandinavian country of 8.9 million, nixed a request by Sara Lindenger and her live-in boyfriend, Johan Leisten, both 28, to name their child Staalman, Superman in Swedish.
"We wanted to call him David Rune Staalman Leisten," Lindenger told The Associated Press Tuesday. "It would be much worse to be called 'Fantomen' (or the Phantom) or Tarzan."
The authority said it wasn't suitable because it might "lead to discomfort for the person who uses it."

Art Broker Arrested For Frauds
Michel Cohen
A once-prominent art broker was arrested in Brazil on Tuesday for his alleged role in two multimillion dollar schemes that involved the theft of a Picasso painting and cheating buyers of a Monet work.
Michel Cohen, who lived in New York and Malibu, California, had fled the United States in 2001 after Sotheby's Holdings and other big names in the art world sued him, alleging he swindled them in a series of lucrative schemes.
The criminal complaint alleges that Cohen arranged in 2000 to broker the sale of "Nu Accroupi," a painting by Pablo Picasso, for the Richard Gray Gallery. Under a consignment agreement, the gallery agreed to lend Cohen the painting for a day so he could show it to a prospective buyer. The painting was to be returned to the gallery the next day.
Instead, Cohen allegedly arranged for the painting to be shipped to a buyer in Iowa who paid Cohen about $4.5 million for the work. The gallery was never paid for the painting and had sued Cohen in 2001.
In the second scheme, Cohen sold what he said was a half-interest in Claude Monet's "Le Repos Dans Le Jardin, Argenteuil" to Beadleston Gallery for $2.5 million.
He also reached a separate pact with a European art dealer to jointly buy the same Monet painting, resell it and split the proceeds. The art dealer paid Cohen $5 million to help carry out the transactions.

Headed for Plea Bargain
Jeffrey Jones
Lawyers in a child pornography case against veteran character actor Jeffrey Jones are quietly attempting to settle the case by the end of the month with a plea bargain, prosecutors said on Tuesday.
Jones, 55, was charged with child pornography possession and allegedly hiring a 14-year-old boy to pose for sexually explicit photographs between September 2000 and May 2002.
If convicted, Jones, who played music-loving Emperor Joseph II in "Amadeus" and a suspicious school principal in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," faces up to three years in prison and the prospect of registering as a sex offender for life.
Jones' case went to an "early disposition court" to see if a deal could be worked out. Deputy District Attorney Deborah Knaan said the case could be settled at a May 12 hearing.
Jones' attorney Leonard Levine called the negotiations "amicable" and said the reports were about the actor's character. "Whatever occurred here is an aberration in his life and it will never happen again," Levine said, adding that Jones would go to trial if satisfactory terms were not reached.
Officials said the charges against Jones do not involve sex acts being performed or any video being taken.

Died Of Natural Causes
Nell Carter
Nell Carter, who played the sassy housekeeper on the 1980s TV sitcom "Gimme a Break!" died of natural causes, the coroner's office said Tuesday.
An autopsy and toxicological tests determined the death was natural because of probable heart disease and diabetes complications, said coroner's Capt. Deborah Peterson.
Blessed with a big voice and a strong stage presence despite her 4-foot-11 height, she won a Tony Award in 1978 for her sultry turn in the Broadway musical "Ain't Misbehavin'" and an Emmy in 1982 for a TV broadcast of the show, which was a revue of Fats Waller songs. Her quietly soulful number "Mean to Me" was a show highlight.
