The Sound Of Eternal Summer In Mashups
By DJ Useo
First off, let me be clear, the title SUMMER BOOTY refers to 'bootleg recordings of a summer nature'. It isn't meant as some slang form of 'hinder'. The bootleg name often comes accompanied by 'pirates' since we tend to 'appropriate' samples without expressly-written consent, much as pirates did in olden days (last week I think). I know people tend to 'word associate' these terms into 'Butt Pirate', but that's not applicable in this situation. Now that the pirating is done, it's time to divvy up the loot. That means you get 2 incredible discs worth of great, new mashups from skilled bootleggers like DJ Zebra, Voicedude, DJ MXR, & many more. SUMMER BOOTY 2009 ( groovytimewithdjuseo.blogspot.com/2009/06/summer-booty-2009-all-new-mashup.html ) continues the tradition of a mashup collection themed along music that evokes the mood of an ever-lasting Summer.
The selection of material in this, the third SUMMER BOOTY ( groovytimewithdjuseo.blogspot.com/2009/06/summer-booty-2009-all-new-mashup.html ) collection, is the best ever, with 31 inspired visions of how Summer feels as interpreted by a large group of international home producers. In the past 2 annual releases of SUMMER BOOTY, the standards were high, with impressive download numbers, & much good feedback. This new collection shows the maturity the genre has attained. I think most folks would be hard-pressed to tell Dan Mei & Marc Johnce ( dangermashups.wordpress.com/ )'s contribution 'Dont Stop The Way It Used To Be' (Pet Shop Boys vs Rihanna) from any label-released top forty single. Surely, it contains 2 such acts, but here you encounter the familiar in a new blend that gives both a new approach that satisfies!
A regular feature of the SUMMER BOOTY comps has been the mini-megamix. This continues with the awesome mixing of Hahnstudios ( hahnstudios.blogspot.com/ ) & their 16-minute tour-de-force track 'Like Ice In The Sunshine (Melt Away Mix International Version)'. This gem seemlessly blends a fantastic medley containing summer confections like Beagle Music Ltd., Richie Valens, Las Ketchup, The Beach Boys, Hall & Oates, Elton John, Die Frzte, Peter Schilling, Sugarbabes, Culture Clu, 2raumwohnung, The Champs, Tracy Ullman, & Rudi Carrell, & that's just in the one track!
Lemme just name-drop for a sec here, because the talent is strong & the material reflects that. Yeah, yeah, it's only bootlegging, but the results are telling. This is a collection worth hearing. Among the many contributors are well-known peeps like DJ Fac,The Homogenic Chaos, DJ Not-I, MadMixMustang, & Colatron. Names that conjure up much past enjoyment from many posted mixes. Newer talent shines here as well with contributions from Fidget Freeman, DJ Dylan, Eddie Pedalo, CjR & DJ Mashup. DJ Mashup is just rebounding from the successful release of his own collection 'Best of Dj MashUP-Summer Smash '09' ( djmashupxdv.blogspot.com ), a fine assortment of his best-recieved tracks with a few new gems as well. DJ Mashup provides a fantastic video to his SUMMER BOOTY track 'One Island In The Stream At A Time' (Bee Gees vs Jordin Sparks) as further inducement to listeners. The video is all done by DJ Mashups hand, & well-worth the youtube view ( www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5T88RWvpUY.
Listen to the entire collection hosted by DJ Petrushka & myself tomorrow, June 25 at 1:30 pm est (6:30 pm gmt) on Sound-Unsound Radio ( www.sound-unsound.com ). No registration required. Test the links now to find excellent mashup radio. :) Tizwarz from Edinburgh plays live on Wednesdays.

DJ Petrushka is also hard at work mixing both discs into one splendid long mix. Look for that on the SUMMER BOOTY 2009 site next Monday. More videos are being prepared as well. Bookmark the SUMMER BOOTY site & look for new content to be added all Summer long.
Thanks for reading my little spiel. I hope it reads as more than just an advertisement. I actually believe in this project.
Also big thanks to all contributors for their allowing themselves to be featured.& to Alpha1999 for art direction & to DJ Petrushka for everything else.
Mix Of The Week - Go for the Hahnstudios track mentioned up above. It's the ginchiest!

Winners Announced
Webby Awards
Though Roger Ebert lost his ability to speak after surgery for cancer, he has found a new and powerful voice online. The film critic was chosen as person of the year by the Webby Awards.
The 14th annual Webbys, which celebrate Internet achievement, were announced Tuesday by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, a 550-member group of Web experts.
Ebert was singled out for "raising the bar for online journalism" with his blog on the Chicago Sun-Times' website. He is also an avid Twitterer and is planning a new movie-review TV program that he says will have a strong presence online.

Walk O'Fame Typo
Julia Louis-Dreyfus
They misspelled Julia Louis-Dreyfus' name on her Hollywood Walk of Fame star, but the Emmy-winning star of "Seinfeld" and "The New Adventures of Old Christine" seemed tickled by the typo.
The mistake? The star read "Luis" instead of "Louis," and there was no hyphen between Louis and Dreyfus.
"The misspelling was so perfectly apt, a great metaphor for show business," Louis-Dreyfus said after the Tuesday-morning ceremony. "Right when you think you've made it, you get knocked down," she continues. "It's an ideal metaphor for how this business works."
Following the ceremony, it was announced that the last Walk of Fame honoree whose name was misspelled was actor Dick Van Dyke in 1993.

He joked in a statement that hosting the Emmys "has been a dream of mine ever since they told me I was doing it."
Nominations for the awards, presented by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, will be announced July 8.

Hunter S. Thompson
One of Hunter S. Thompson's last works has been picked up for feature treatment that would put a character based on Thompson onscreen again, this time as a crusader for justice.
Motion Picture Corporation of America, led by CEO Brad Krevoy, has acquired rights to "Prisoner of Denver," a June 2004 Vanity Fair article co-written by Thompson and the magazine's contributing editor Mark Seal.
"Prisoner" focused on injustice and abuse in Colorado's legal system in the case of 21-year-old Lisl Auman, who was charged with a murder that occurred while she was in the back of a patrol car, already in police custody. She was handed a life sentence with no possibility of parole.
While behind bars, she began a correspondence with Thompson. His unrelenting grassroots activism -- which included enlisting celebrity pals like Johnny Depp, Jack Nicholson, Benicio Del Toro and Woody Harrelson -- and the Vanity Fair piece helped overturn Auman's sentence in 2005.

Hosting Series For History
Stan Lee
The History cable network is teaming with comic-book icon Stan Lee for a series that spotlights real-life X-Men.
As part of a slate of new shows, the "X-Men" creator will co-host "Stan Lee's Superhumans," which will find people whose genetic differences have given them remarkable abilities. Daniel Browning Smith, dubbed the world's most flexible man, will host the series with Lee.
"Superhumans" will debut on the network during the third quarter and is joined by five other series and a slew of specials being greenlighted in time for the network's "upfront" presentation to advertisers this week.

Gets Second Season
"Justified"
FX has ordered a second season of "Justified" with a 13-episode pickup.
The drama, which stars Timothy Olyphant as a U.S. marshal in rural Kentucky, had a towering debut, dropped sharply, then stabilized in the ratings. To date, the show has averaged 3.4 million total viewers in its freshman season.
The Season 1 finale airs June 8.

Home Dedicated As Museum
Olive Davis Osmond
Members of the Osmond family gathered Monday in the small southeastern Idaho town of Samaria to honor their mother with the dedication of the "Olive May Davis Osmond Cabin and Museum."
Olive Davis Osmond was born 85 years ago in a two-room cabin in Samaria. She died in 2004.
Seven of her nine children joined fans from as far away as Japan to honor the singing family's matriarch and dedicate the log cabin as a museum. Items on display there include a sewing table that each of the Osmond brothers carved his initials into.
The cabin sits on property donated by local high school teacher Luke Waldron. Waldron says he restored the structure with "a lot of community involvement," including help from several Eagle Scouts.

Sentenced
Robert "Joe" Halderman
The former CBS television producer who tried to shake down David Letterman over the comic icon's office affairs started a six-month jail sentence Tuesday, closing a case that opened Letterman's behind-the-scenes behavior to public scrutiny.
Carrying a Bible to a court date he knew would end in time behind bars, Robert "Joe" Halderman declined to speak before he was led from a Manhattan court in handcuffs to begin his jail term, to be followed by 1,000 hours of community service. He agreed to both when he pleaded guilty in March to attempted grand larceny.
Letterman wasn't on hand for Halderman's sentencing Tuesday, and a spokesman for him declined to comment afterward. But throughout the six-month saga, Letterman made himself a presence in the case, if not the courtroom.
With time off for good behavior, Halderman could be released in four months. Under his plea agreement, his community service will entail providing job training to formerly homeless people and convicts getting out of prison.

Ayla Brown
Former "American Idol" contestant Ayla Brown has a new job even before she graduates from Boston College.
The daughter of Massachusetts Scott Brown (R-Pin-Up Boy) is serving as CBS "Early Show" contributor. She's producing pieces focused on the youth audience.
Executive Producer David Friedman said Tuesday he became interested in Brown when she sang on the morning show. She had previously been an "American Idol" semifinalist.
He says, "You can't create the next Katie Couric; you just have to find talent that you think can develop into something."

US Scores Low
"Mothers Index"
The United States has scored poorly on a campaign group's list of the best countries in which to be a mother, managing only 28th place, and bettered by many smaller and poorer countries.
Norway topped the latest Save the Children "Mothers Index", followed by a string of other developed nations, while Afghanistan came in at the bottom of the table, below several African states.
One factor that dragged the US ranking down was its maternal mortality rate, which at one in 4,800 is one of the highest in the developed world, said the report.
"A woman in the Unites States is more than five times as likely as a woman in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece or Italy to die from pregnancy-related causes in her lifetime and her risk of maternal death is nearly 10-fold that of a woman in Ireland," the report said.

Dynasty Cursed By Inbreeding
Darwin
Charles Darwin's family suffered from the deleterious effects of inbreeding, suggests a new study that serves as ironic punctuation to the evolutionary theorist's life work.
Pioneer of the theory that genetic traits affect survival of both individual organisms and species, Darwin wondered in his own lifetime if his marriage to first cousin Emma Wedgwood was having "the evil effects of close interbreeding" that he had observed in plants and animals.
Three of their children died before age 10, two from infectious diseases. The survivors were often ill, and out of the six long-term marriages that resulted, only half produced any children. According to researchers at Ohio State University and Spain's Universidad de Santiago de Compestela, that alone is a "suspicious" sign that the Darwins suffered from reproductive problems.
The new study, detailed in the journal Bioscience, fed genealogical data on the Darwin-Wedgwood link into a specialized computer program, which spit out a "coefficient of inbreeding," or the probability that an individual received two identical copies of a gene resulting from marriages among relatives. (Some genetic disorders are caused by recessive genes, which means they require two copies of a gene in order for the trait to manifest.)

Keys To Reaching 100
Betty White
Staying in touch with pop culture, the latest trends such as iPods and texting messaging, and a dinner date with actress Betty White are keys to living a long life, according to people who know -- centenarians.
Being socially active, eating a healthy diet, exercising and getting enough sleep also won't hurt.
Eight percent of centenarians said they had sent text or instant messages, compared to one percent last year. And 12 percent are using iPods, four percent more than three years ago, the GfK Roper survey for Evercare showed.
White, the octogenarian star of a popular Super Bowl commercial, was the top choice of a dinner date for most of the centenarians. She usurped actor Bill Cosby, who was the winner for the past two years.

Likely Poisoned
Simon Bolivar
A U.S. scientist is supporting a theory that has been widely dismissed as a personal obsession of Venezuela's Hugo Chavez: that his hero Simon Bolivar might have died from arsenic poisoning.
Venezuela's leftist president rejects the traditional account that Bolivar, a brilliant Venezuelan military tactician who liberated much of South America from centuries of Spanish rule, died of tuberculosis in Colombia in 1830.
Now, Paul Auwaerter of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine says his death was most likely caused by arsenic -- either from drinking contaminated water or using the naturally occurring poison to try to cure headaches and hemorrhoids.
At a medical conference in Maryland last week, Auwaerter said he did not rule out murder but thought it was unlikely.

GSN Game Show
New Henson Puppets
Puppets will take a walk on the wild side as part of a new late-night game show.
"Late Night Liars," debuting next month on GSN, features a panel of what the channel calls saucy and uncensored "celebrity puppets." Actor-comedian Larry Miller (R-Makes Dennis Miller Seem Funny) is the host.
The puppets are designed by Henson Alternative, a label of the Jim Henson Co. that focuses on projects aimed at adults - meaning no Muppets or other beloved Henson creations will be on the game show.
Among the cocktail-swilling puppet characters to be included: Cashmere Ramada, described as a famous "celebutante and tabloid target," and Shelley Oceans, a brash comedian. Contestants vie for cash prizes by deciding whether the puppets are telling true or false stories.

French Approve Return Of Heads
Maori
The French parliament on Tuesday approved the restitution of tattooed, mummified heads of Maori warriors to New Zealand, centuries after they were brought to Europe and displayed as exotic oddities.
The decision is part of a broader effort by some European museums to return artifacts plundered by explorers, giving in to pressure from communities around the world who want to bring home their dead and lay them to rest.
It is the first time that a French law has authorized the return of an entire category of museum items, rather than a specific object, and marks a success for activists campaigning for the restitution of bodies and antiquities.
U.S. and European museums have long resisted such claims, fearing they would lead to the departure of prized mummies and other archaeological treasures.

Work Sets Record
Picasso
Picasso's "Nude, Green Leaves and Bust" soared to more than $106 million at Christie's on Tuesday, setting a record for a work of art sold at auction.
The vibrant large-scale depiction of Picasso's mistress and frequent subject, Marie-Therese Walter, was the highlight of a world-class collection assembled by the late Los Angeles art patrons Frances and Sidney Brody.
It had been estimated to sell for more than $80 million, but many art experts predicted in recent weeks it would ride growing confidence in a recovering art market and break the previous record of $104.3 million set in February by Giacometti's "Walking Man I" at Sotheby's in London.

In Memory
Ernie Harwell
Longtime Detroit Tigers broadcaster Ernie Harwell died on Tuesday after a year-long battle with cancer, the official Major League Baseball website reported. He was 92.
Harwell, who spent 42 seasons calling Tigers games on radio and then on television before retiring from the broadcast booth in 2002, was voted the 1981 Ford Frick Award for contributions to baseball by the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
He had been scheduled to receive the Vin Scully Lifetime Achievement Award in Sports Broadcasting in New York on Wednesday.
Harwell's 55-year career began in Atlanta in 1946 and two years later he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers. After working for the New York Giants and Baltimore Orioles he found his home in Michigan.
Born on January 25, 1918, in Washington, Georgia, William Earnest Harwell grew up as an aspiring sportswriter and did freelance work for the Sporting News and later the Atlanta Constitution before turning his gentlemanly Southern voice to radio broadcasts for the minor league Atlanta Crackers.
He died in his apartment at Fox Run Village, a retirement community in Novi, Michigan, with Lulu, his wife of 68 years, at his side.
