West LA, Friday

Stern Stand Up

excerpt from LA Broadcasting:

If traffic in Westwood is congested Friday morning, you can blame KLSX. The station is organizing a rally for Howard Stern on the sidewalk in front of the Federal Building in West Los Angeles.

KLSX has alerted its fans to obey all laws. "You cannot impede traffic. You must stay on the sidewalk. Do not jaywalk. Cross the streets at the appropriate intersections with traffic signals. Park legally to avoid parking tickets."

The station is encouraging listeners to "bring your signs to show support!"

Thanks, Mr. Y!

Boyhood Home on EBay

Bill Clinton

Gary Johnson and his mother, Elaine, have lived in the "little bitty house" at 321 E. 13th St. for about 10 years.

But selling the neatly-maintained corner lot residence where Bill Clinton lived for three years as a child is taking some time.

Johnson decided to go worldwide and auction off the home on eBay.

The former president was born in Hope on Aug. 19, 1946, and his birthplace home has been turned into a museum. Clinton lived at the 13th Street residence from 1951-1953 before moving to Hot Springs.

Wants His Razzie Awards

Ben Affleck

Ben Affleck wants his Razzies. Affleck jokingly complains that he never got all the Razzies he won for "Pearl Harbor," and now that "Gigli" has won a record number of awards for being the worst movie ever, he hopes they're in the mail.

He says at the very least he should get "a golden sack of grapes" or something. Affleck says he feels "stiffed" because he's never gotten any of his Razzies. He says the people who give out the awards have "diminished their integrity."

Islamic Group Files Complaint

Clear Channel

A Islamic rights group has filed a federal complaint against a Los Angeles talk radio station and the nation's largest radio chain over a skit that suggested Iraqis want to kill Jews, marry camels, avoid bathing, and meet Japanese schoolgirls in heaven.

Meanwhile, an official for the Clear Channel Communications station, KFI-AM, said she would read an apology on the air for the March 10 broadcast by morning-show host Bill Handel, which triggered the Federal Communications Commission complaint.

A representative of Clear Channel, which dumped top-rated talk-show host Howard Stern in February under a new "zero tolerance" policy toward indecency, had no immediate comment.

Judge Delays Drug Case Again

Courtney Love

A hearing to determine whether Courtney Love will be tried on drug charges was postponed on Tuesday, but not before the singer-actress had disrupted the proceedings and was admonished by the judge to keep quiet.

It was the fourth time a Beverly Hills judge has put off hearing the felony case stemming from Love's Oct. 2 trip to a local hospital for what police called "a medical emergency."

Superior Court Judge Elden Fox reset the hearing for April 15 after Love's new lawyer said he needed more time to prepare his case and obtain evidence from investigators.

Meets With Pope

Jim Caviezel

Pope John Paul II met Monday with Jim Caviezel, star of Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ," the Vatican said.

Caviezel, who plays Jesus in the film, had a brief conversation with the pontiff, who then blessed the devoutly Roman Catholic actor, Vatican spokesman the Rev. Ciro Benedettini said. He had no further information on their discussion.

The ANSA news agency said Caviezel arrived in Rome Saturday, and attended a private screening of his film at the Legionaries of Christ, a conservative Catholic group. Caviezel's wife also attended the meeting with the pope, the news agency said.

Soldiers Relive 60 Years Later

'The Great Escape'

Penguins and stooges, tunnelers and forgers -- they were all there in London this week to remember Tom, Dick and Harry.

These were the men who broke out of Nazi Germany's supposedly escape-proof camp Stalag Luft III on a moonless night in March 1944, creating one of World War II's most enduring legends and inspiring a classic war film.

The Great Escape itself was 60 years ago but Squadron Leader Jimmy James, one of the 76 who escaped through the tunnel code-named Harry, clearly remembers the moments as he waited underground to scramble to freedom.

'Oft Unseen: Art From the Lodge and Other Secret Societies'

College of Charleston

You don't need to know a secret handshake or remember a password to enter the College of Charleston's Halsey Gallery. But what is inside offers a fascinating glimpse of various fraternal groups, such as the Freemasons and Odd Fellows, who have long held ceremonies in secret.

On view are robes and masks, wall hangings and banners, backdrops and even an oil-burning sciopticon — an early projector used to show slides on a wall during ceremonies and initiations — mostly from the turn of the 20th century.

"Oft Unseen: Art From the Lodge and Other Secret Societies," which runs through March 20, offers a glimpse at things that millions of Americans knew about a century ago.

In Memory

Chuck Niles

Chuck "Be-Bop Charlie" Niles, whose velvety baritone voice and music knowledge earned him the only Hollywood Walk of Fame star awarded to a jazz radio host, died Monday. He was 76.

Niles died from complications of a stroke he suffered Feb. 26, said longtime friend Judy Jankowski.

"We would call him 'The Great Chuck Niles,'" said Jankowski, who also is the president and general manager of KKJZ-FM in Long Beach, where Niles served as the afternoon drive host since 1990.

Born Charles Neidel in 1928, Niles began playing clarinet at age 7 and was playing professional jobs on the saxophone by age 14. He broke into professional radio at WEAT-FM in West Palm Beach, Fla.

He later headed to Los Angeles to pursue acting. Niles, described as tall and lanky, had small roles in films, including "Breakfast at Tiffany's."

He eventually ended up as the afternoon movie host at a Los Angeles television station. A long-lasting friendship with jazz legend Sleepy Stein then led to him joining KNOB-AM in Los Angeles, where Niles launched his career in jazz radio.
