Re: kilborn's exit from LLS
I think a lot of people have been left wondering what the "real" story is behind Kilborn's departure from the Late Late Show.
I think it is actually a combination of issues, rather than just one thing, that led to his decision. First, it was strongly rumored that, in his negotiations to re-up with CBS, he was basically told that he wouldn't be moving up to take over Letterman's show whenever Dave decided to hang it up.
Second, he was being low-balled, salary-wise, in his negotiations; the two sides were far apart. Maybe this was CBS's way of easing him toward the door so it could take a legitimate run at Conan O'Brien (who I think is far inferior to Kilborn), or maybe Kilborn was asking for too much (though, to be fair, his ratings have steadily increased every season he's been on the air, so he did have a strong argument on point).
Third, his son Jonathan (whose privacy he guards relentlessly), starts college either this fall or next fall, and he could have just wanted more free time to be a parent. I'm not sure I buy the whole "persuing other projects" angle, since he didn't do much writing on Late Late Show anyway, and acting? Doubtful.
But, this being Hollywood, there probably is something that isn't being reported out there, too.

'Real Time with Bill Maher'
Bill Maher opened his friday night frolics (8/27/04)
with a satelite repartee with "Swift Boat" liar, Kerry
hater and bullshit author John E. Oneill. What a
bloated prick! Even when Bill lobbed him some softball
similes, the "Unfit to Live" prevaricater parlayed
nothing more than his pre-packed wacko
rhetoric.....This guy should be put in a set of
"blocks" with his head sticking through a wooden hole
and be pelted with decaying fruit and dung!
Bills' panel included erudite author Eric Dyson,
California Repug Rep. Dana Rohrabacher and bespeckled
journalist Ashley Banfield. This section of the show
focused primarily on the swift boat lies, the war in
Iraq and the current campaign. Dana Rohrabacher is a
chimp chirping idiot. when confronted about Bushes
record on the environment, he wheedled his wimpy
wisdom: "Which scientist do you believe about global
warming?" Fuck you - you fool! (Sorry - it was HBO)
Then Bill hooked up by satellite with Chris Matthews
(HardBall) and I think, at least, here we had a human
with a sense of humor. "Fair and Balanced" - I'm not
sure but at least "No Spin"! (Fuck you Bill O'Reilly)
Finally, Bill Maher, after delivering his "New Rules"
routine, went into his closing monologue - exhorting
demonstrators coming to New York City for the RNC not
to be a bunch of "Pussies" but in the spirit of the
1968 Chicago Convention - get out on the streets and
"Throw a garbage can through a Starbucks window" - My
My - bill the "Anarchist" !
I, of course, still have only one question for Bill
Maher: "Do you now or have you ever "Done" Ann
Coulter"????

Re: Kirk Douglas
I love TCM and I check out BartcopE every day to see what's going to be on (OK and for links to dirty pictures too).
But how in the world can they showcase Douglas and NOT show Spartacus? A Kirk Douglas retrospective without Spartacus is a lot like saying: "Oh, yeah, Orson Wells was also involved in Citizen Kane."
Or Air America debuting in Denver and leaving out Chuck D.

Last Night
Weather is starting to heat up.
A couple of the kittens made a break for it on Sunday. They managed to rip the (nylon) screen in the back door and ran for the back yard.
They crawled under the boxwood hedges & we weren't able to get them out, so they 'camped out' all night.
This morning they were waiting on the back stoop, quite ready to come in.
The kid's school starts Thursday. He is not excited.

'Star Trek' Fans Honor
James Doohan
Hundreds of "Star Trek" fans showed up to see James Doohan as he appeared at one last convention before retiring from public life.
The 84-year-old actor, who played "Scotty" on the '60s TV series, decided to retire after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease several months ago. He blew kisses to a crowd of Trekkie faithful gathered at Sunday's finale of a two-day tribute held at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel.
Doohan, who played the USS Enterprise's affable chief engineer, Lt. Cmdr. Montgomery "Scotty" Scott of "Beam me up, Scotty" fame, has won the goodwill of fans who say he always took time to sign autographs and talk trivia.

Draws Boos at Convention
Michael Moore
Already a box office sensation, filmmaker Michael Moore got another loud reception Monday at the Republican convention. This time, it was boos.
When Sen. John McCain (R-Manchurian Candidate), told the delegates about "a disingenuous film maker who would have us believe that Saddam's Iraq was an oasis of peace," they knew he was referring to the maker of "Fahrenheit 9-11." The film, which savages Bush's Iraq policy, has set a box office record for documentaries, grossing $115 million so far.
McCain's comments prompted prolonged booing and chants of "Four more years." Many of the delegates faced Moore, who was seated in the press seats at Madison Square Garden because he is writing a column this week for USA Today.
Asked about McCain's remarks, Moore said, "I can't believe they're dumb enough to bring up the film and help its box office."

Rages Against Bush, Republicans
Tom Morello
Billed as the Nightwatchman, Audioslave guitarist Tom Morello is taking his acoustic guitar, three chords and the truth on the road this fall for more than half of the 20-date Rock Against Bush tour, which features such punk acts as Anti-Flag, Midtown and Mike Park.
"I've been rocking against Bush for quite some time," Morello told Billboard.com. "I'm good friends with Anti-Flag, as well as a fan of PunkVoter, which is the sponsor of the tour. I wanted to do my part during this very crucial juncture in American history to help fight the power and to make sure that in these very, very dangerous times that the truth gets out about this administration before the election and that we can galvanize our forces as much as possible, because Bush must go."
I
Morello says he has roughly 40 original songs at his disposal for his seven- or eight-song set as part of the Rock Against Bush tour. He characterizes the material as being in the spirit of Woody Guthrie, early Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash. Two cuts, "House Gone up in Flames" and "Union Song," can be downloaded from the
Nightwatchman Web site.

Arrested at Anti-Bush March
Rosario Dawson
Actress Rosario Dawson, arrested at an anti-Bush march has been charged with two counts of disorderly conduct and the obstruction of governmental administration, officials said on Monday.
Dawson, 25, and Vija Grosgalves, 28, were filming a scene for the independent film "Medium Cool" in Manhattan on Sunday, using protests by thousands of protesters marching past Madison Square Garden as a backdrop.
Police nabbed the pair, alleging that they were "both masked" and used handkerchiefs "with only the area around their eyes showing," according to a criminal complaint filed in Manhattan Criminal Court.
When their director, Stephen Marshall, 36, showed officers that they had a legitimate film permit issued by the city, police handcuffed him, too, and hauled the three away to be processed. Police said Marshall did not have a valid permit.

"Major Dad" actor Gerald McRaney underwent surgery Monday to remove a cancerous growth from his lung, his Los Angeles publicist told The Associated Press.
The growth was detected during a physical examination McRaney underwent before minor knee surgery two weeks ago. Although the lung growth was malignant, the actor's doctor said it was detected at an early stage, Bollinger said.
McRaney will remain in the hospital for several days before returning to his Los Angeles home next week where he is expected to begin work on the new TV series "Commando Nanny," which begins airing in September on the WB network.

Missing as Wheaties Honors Olympic Winners
Paul Hamm
American gymnast Paul Hamm, who was asked to return his Olympic gold medal in the men's all-around because of a scoring error, may have received another snub.
General Mills Inc, the maker of Wheaties cereal, announced on Monday three U.S. Olympic champions will appear on millions of its iconic orange cereal boxes -- but Hamm was not among them.
Traditionally a launching pad for lucrative commercial endorsement deals, Wheaties boxes will feature record-breaking swimmer Michael Phelps, female gymnastics all-around champion Carly Patterson, and the holder of the "world's fastest human" title, 100-meter gold medalist Justin Gatlin.

Gets Confrontational
Vancouver Film Fest
The Vancouver International Film Festival, which is set to announce its lineup Wednesday, is giving top billing this year to politics and projects knocking resident Bush.
The war in Iraq, terrorism, globalization and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict have inspired a controversial lineup of documentaries for Vancouver's upcoming Sept. 23-Oct. 8 run, festival director Alan Franey said Monday. In all, 372 films, comprising 237 features and 133 shorter films, will unspool in Vancouver.
New this year is a program of activist documentaries titled Changing the World, which has filmmakers dropping any pretensions to objectivity.
French director William Karel will be in Vancouver for the international premiere of "The World According to Bush," which uses interviews with former White House officials and international political players to paint Bush as inept and beholden to the Christian right. Franey described Karel's documentary as more rigorous and less demagogical than Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11."
Also in town will be filmmaker and notable wartime blogger Salam Pax for the international premiere of "Baghdad Blogger/Salam Pax: Video Reports From Iraq."
