Re: Michael Moore
I got hooked on Moore back when his show TV Nation first aired on network
TV. I have to add a ditto to Ray's remarks. I purchased the 4 DVD set from
The Awful Truth, and to be honest, I've watched random episodes over and
over.
At times I'm saddened that many more Americans don't have a clue as to the
methods to his madness. Many sheeple I have talked with feel Moore should be
locked up, or worse, tried as an un American commie pinko; this is one of the
many things that scrares the bejeezus out of me today about the spirit that
has taken over the land since the Bush Cartel set up shop in Washington.
I'm probably on Ashcroft's watch list as I ordered every possible episode I
could find from "TV Nation", "Roger and Me" and "The Big One" online.
Mea culpa, I have shamelessly sinned; I confess that I mightilly enjoy everything
Michael has done. Moore is to reality what Matt Groening is to animated
sitcoms. Both have committed one of the most heinous crimes of the 20-21st
century, making people who are still capable of it....think!

Sued By Fair & Balanced™ Faux
Al Franken
Fox News Channel has sued liberal humorist Al Franken and the Penguin Group to stop them from using the phrase "fair and balanced" in the title of his upcoming book.
Filed Monday in Manhattan, the trademark infringement lawsuit seeks a court order forcing a Penguin publisher, Dutton books, to rename the book, "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right." It also asks for unspecified damages.
Fox News registered "Fair & Balanced" as a trademark in 1995, the suit says.

'Liberal' Papers
So-called "liberal" newspapers tend to be more open-minded and willing to criticize a like-minded U.S. president than their "conservative" counterparts, according to a report released last week.
In a study for The Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard University, Michael Tomasky looked at 510 editorials over the past decade. He found that on their editorial pages The New York Times and The Washington Post criticized the Clinton administration 30% of the time. By contrast, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Times opposed the Bush White House 7% of the time.
Tomasky also found a "striking difference in tone between the two sides as well," with the conservative papers using far "harsher" language in responding to Clinton and engaging in ad hominem attacks. The two sides, therefore, "represent two different models of journalism. The conservative editorial pages are more likely to think of themselves as being 'on the team,' as it were..."
In sum, Tomasky writes, "the two sides define partisanship quite differently and envision the roles they play as political actors very differently as well." The 57-page report can be found at
www.shorensteincenter.org.

Although its second edition is still a little more than a month away, the Austin City Limits Music Festival will be around for at least another five years.

Iron Maiden Frontman
Bruce Dickinson
One of the greatest things about being a rock star is never having to work another day in your life, right?
So why, you might ask, would a rocker as financially secure as Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson -- the singer of a band that is still selling out Madison Square Garden some 20 years down the line -- want to go out and work a J-O-B?
When he's not on the road or in the studio with Maiden, Dickinson spends a good chunk of his year piloting 150-seat Boeing 737s for Astraeus Airlines in London.
A first officer for Astraeus and a pilot for some 11 years, Dickinson logged between 600 and 700 hours in the air for the company last year, regularly jetting back and forth from London to such locales as Egypt, Iceland and the former Soviet Union.

Blames Policy for Filmmaking Woes
Ed Asner
While actor Ed Asner thinks Canada is not to blame for the migration of entertainment jobs to America's northern neighbor, he is concerned about the fallout.
The actor, who as Lou Grant ran one of television's most famous newsrooms, ventured north Saturday to join in a panel discussion on national cultural identity at the 72nd annual Couchiching Conference.
Asner complained about the loss of jobs in the Los Angeles area because of runaway productions, in which American studios and companies do the principal work — such as filming and photography — in other countries in order to save money.
"Take it from me, filmmaking is suffering in the U.S. Eighteen films featuring Chicago last year were shot elsewhere. Toronto will all too easily replace Chicago."

Scraps 12 More Shows
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Veteran southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd has canceled the first 12 dates on its upcoming tour as the group's leader deals with complications from heart surgery, a spokesman said on Monday.
Guitarist Gary Rossington, 51, who underwent quintuple bypass surgery in February, recently suffered a mild seizure and is now battling "some artery blockage," according to a statement.
The seven-man band will now begin its Vicious Cycle tour on Sept. 16 in Trenton, New Jersey; it was supposed to begin on Aug. 23 in Omaha, Nebraska. Rossington's health problems also forced Lynyrd Skynyrd to cancel the remaining dates on its co-headlining tour with former Van Halen singer Sammy Hagar, who is continuing the trek by himself.

Problems In Puerto Rico
'Naked Boys Singing'
"Naked Boys Singing" is moving to another venue in Puerto Rico's capital following opposition which twice forced the cancellation of the show's debut at a city-run theater.
The musical will now debut on Friday at the private El Josco theater in the Santurce section of San Juan, producer Raymond Gerena said Sunday.
He called City Hall's refusal to stage the production at Tapia Theater in historic Old San Juan "a black page in Puerto Rican theater and a tragic precedent for democracy." A protest of actors, producers and other entertainers has been scheduled for Monday outside City Hall.
Written by Robert Schrock and in its fifth year at Actors Playhouse in New York's Greenwich Village, the Spanish version of the show features eight nude men singing and dancing to Spanish-Caribbean beats like salsa and plena.
The production has been shown in the United States, Italy, Norway, Australia, Britain, South Africa, Brazil, Mexico, Spain and Argentina. A showing had never been canceled before, although there were protests in Massachusetts, producers said.

Omar Sharif
Omar Sharif will receive a Golden Lion award at the upcoming Venice Film Festival for his 50-year screen career, organizers said Monday.
The Egyptian-born 71-year-old has starred in films including "Doctor Zhivago," "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Funny Girl." His award will be the second career-achievement prize handed out at this year's festival, with the other going to producer Dino De Laurentiis.
The 60th Venice Film Festival runs from Aug. 27-Sept. 6. Among the films being screened is Sharif's latest, "Mr. Ibrahim and the Flowers of the Quran," in which he plays an old Muslim man who adopts a Jewish boy.

Converts VHS Movies to DVD
New Toy
A new Hewlett-Packard Co. device aims to make it easier for consumers to transfer their memories from analog VHS tapes to the increasingly popular, longer-lasting digital format of DVDs.
The DVD Movie Writer dc3000 was among 100 consumer products the computing giant announced Monday for the holiday shopping season.
The Movie Writer, priced at $399, will be available in mid-September, the company said.
The gadget combines features to complete a task that often requires separate purchases of software, a video capture card and a DVD burner. It connects to a computer through a USB cable and can record videos from a VHS, Hi8, Digital 8 or Mini DVD player onto a DVD.

Archaeologists Dig Up Palace
Caligula
For centuries scholars have debated whether Caligula, the Roman empire's eccentric third ruler, was a megalomaniac who dared to defy the gods or a maligned emperor whose caprices were exaggerated after his death.
Now a group of archaeologists digging up Caligula's ancient palace say they have finally found concrete evidence that he was indeed a "maniac" who turned one of Rome's most revered temples into the front porch of his residence.
"Everyone knows this guy was a little crazy. But now we have proof that he was completely off his rocker, that he thought he was one of the gods," Darius Arya, one of the directors of the excavation, said on Monday.
"It's like someone -- a president or a king or you know, Bill Gates -- turning St. Peter's into their entrance hall," he said during a break from the dig in the Roman Forum in the heart of Italy's capital.

Opposed Immigrants
Schwarzenegger
Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger voted for a 1994 ballot measure to deny social services to illegal immigrants, his campaign said Sunday — offering the first glimpse of the actor's stand on a major policy issue.
The Republican has promoted himself as the candidate in California's gubernatorial recall who can best appeal to the state's politically and ethnically diverse electorate.
The GOP-backed Proposition 187 to deny health care and public education to illegal immigrants was passed by a wide margin, although it was eventually ruled unconstitutional. It remains a contentious issue and a litmus test for some voters, particularly Hispanics, to gauge whether a candidate is immigrant-friendly.
Speaking on ABC's "This Week," Art Torres, chairman of the California Democratic Party, slammed Schwarzenegger for his decision to appoint former Gov. Pete Wilson, the architect of Proposition 187, as chairman of his new campaign.
