Miramax & Michael Moore
Fahrenheit 911
A film on the Sept. 11 attacks by Oscar-winning documentarian Michael Moore that criticizes resident Bush has won short-term backing from Miramax Film Corp., a source familiar with the deal said on Monday.
Miramax, a unit of Walt Disney Co., stepped in after actor Mel Gibson's Icon Productions withdrew backing for the production, the source said.
Miramax will provide a few million dollars in temporary "bridge" funding, which offers the studio less risk and a lower return than longer-term financing.
The film, "Fahrenheit 911," will look at the United States in the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001 and alleged links between the families of Bush and Osama bin Laden, the Muslim militant accused of coordinating the hijackings on that date. The title also refers to "Fahrenheit 451," a dystopian tale of book burning by Ray Bradbury.

Renewed By MTV & NBC
Carson Daly
Last call hasn't sounded yet for Carson Daly, who's had his contracts renewed with NBC for the next year and with MTV for the next two years.
Daly has been the face of MTV since he started hosting the afternoon video countdown show "Total Request Live" in 1998. But he's appeared less frequently in the past couple of years as he's developed his late-night talk show, "Last Call with Carson Daly," on NBC.
The new MTV contract, announced Monday, calls for the 29-year-old to continue hosting and serving as an executive producer on "TRL." He'll also host and sometimes produce special events, such as "Spring Break" and "Spankin' New Music Week."
NBC entertainment president Jeff Zucker announced Daly's contract extension Monday during the network's fall schedule presentation to advertisers. Financial terms weren't disclosed on either deal.

New Digital Animation Unit
Lucasfilm Animation
Following the path of Pixar Animation Studios, Dreamworks and other filmmakers, "Stars Wars" creator George Lucas is forming a new group to make computer-animated films, a spokeswoman said on Monday.
The unit, called Lucasfilm Animation, is an offshoot of his special effects company, Industrial Light & Magic, that has been a pioneer in the field of digital effects and works on Lucas' own "Star Wars" films.
Lynne Hale, spokeswoman for his San Rafael, California-based Lucasfilm Ltd., said the new unit was "still in its beginning stages" and did not even have a project to talk about.
As a result, details were limited. Hale confirmed that Lucasfilm Animation will be formed from a nine-person team housed with Industrial Light & Magic. The new division will be headed by senior vice president Patty Blau.
Lucas is a vocal proponent of using digitally produced and computerized special effects in the movies. His companies have been active in designing new cameras for shooting digital films, and his most recent "Star Wars: Episode II -- Attack of the Clones" was shot in the digital format.

Doodles Up for Auction
Jimi Hendrix
Swirling rainbow images penned by 1960s guitar legend Jimi Hendrix are set to go under the hammer in London later this week, auctioneers said Monday.
The psychedelic designs, drawn at the height of the "flower power" movement, were given by Hendrix to two members of his management team, Bob and Kathy Levine.
"According to Bob, Jimi carried two sketch pads with him for several years, and on occasions when he was alone happily doodled and drew, painstakingly coloring them in suitably psychedelic felt pen," auctioneer Cooper Owen said in a statement.
"Some of the drawings appear to have begun as small doodles but develop into intricate, highly involved designs," it added. "Some recurring motifs include petals, leaves, blazing suns and hooded figures."
Also under the hammer is one of Hendrix's trademark bandanas; an address book "including telephone numbers of girlfriends"; and assorted drug-taking paraphernalia.

Appeals Court Allows Challenge
Rosa Parks
A federal appeals court on Monday revived a lawsuit by civil rights icon Rosa Parks against the rap group OutKast over a song that uses her name for its title.
A federal judge in Detroit had dismissed Parks' lawsuit in 1999 over the song "Rosa Parks," saying OutKast's use of her name was protected by free speech, and the group did not need to compensate her.
But a three-judge panel of the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that while OutKast's free speech defense was valid, so was Parks' claim that using her name could suggest the song was about her or that she was connected to the group.
The panel said OutKast needed to show some artistic reason for calling the song "Rosa Parks," and ordered the district court to conduct a hearing and rule on the issue.
"The fact that Defendants cry 'artist' and 'symbol' as reasons for appropriating Rosa Parks' name for a song title does not absolve them from potential liability for, in the words of Shakespeare, filching Rosa Parks' good name," the ruling said.

50 Years Later
'Greatest' Jazz Concert
They billed themselves simply as The Quintet. The performance on May 15, 1953, would become known as possibly the greatest jazz concert of all time.
Dizzy Gillespie working his trumpet. Charlie "Bird" Parker on the saxophone. Max Roach on drums. Charles Mingus on bass and Bud Powell on the piano.
The five jazz legends would play together only once in their lifetimes in a Toronto concert that brought together key architects of the modern jazz style known as bebop.
Fifty years later, Massey Hall will commemorate the event by assembling another quintet of celebrated jazz musicians to recreate the historic concert in the same venue.
This time, Herbie Hancock will be on piano, Roy Haynes on drums, Roy Hargrove on the trumpet, Dave Holland on bass and Kenny Garrett on saxophone.
The 1953 concert was the brainchild of the New Jazz Society of Toronto, a bunch of twenty-something jazz lovers who decided to persuade the musicians to play at Massey Hall, dubbed the Carnegie Hall of the North and renowned for its acoustics.
The concert was fraught with difficulties. Gillespie had to track Parker down for the flight to Toronto. Upon arrival, Bird promptly disappeared only to show up shortly before the show.

Summer Tours
Osbournes
No word yet what record label Ozzy Osbourne and daughter Kelly will sign with now that they've split with Sony Records. Ozzy had been with Sony for 23 years. Kelly was signed in 2002.
Sharon, Ozzy's wife and manager says they're leaving in search of what she calls "fresh ideas." But it's not like Ozzy and Kelly will just be hanging out this summer. Ozzy is preparing for a Canadian tour in June and for his summer Ozzfest concerts. This year's Ozzfest will feature several recording artists, including Korn, Marilyn Manson and Cradle of Faith.
Meanwhile, Kelly starts a European tour with Robbie Williams this summer. The teenager's debut album, "Shut Up," features the title track as well as her remake of Madonna's "Papa Don't Preach." Also, the family's reality TV series on MTV, "The Osbournes," starts its third season on June 19.

Unveils New Fall Lineup
NBC
With mega-hit "Friends" entering its final year on the air, NBC unveiled a star-studded batch of new shows for the upcoming season on Monday, enlisting such household names as Whoopi Goldberg, James Caan and Alicia Silverstone.
Looking to retain ratings dominance among its target audience of young adults as the Fox network nips at its heels, NBC plans to launch four new comedies and three new dramas for the upcoming 2003-04 season, which starts this fall.
Altering its programming lineup for every night but Wednesday and Saturday, NBC's fall schedule amounts to its biggest prime-time shake-up in recent years.
Familiar faces and household names also figure prominently in NBC's new scripted shows, many of them pairing well-known stars with lesser-known and younger ensemble casts.
Three shows that were considered questionable for renewal in the 2003-04 season will return -- the freshman comedy "Good Morning, Miami," the romantic dramedy "Ed" and the critically hailed crime drama "Boomtown," with singer-actress Vanessa Williams joining the cast.
One high-profile series that failed to make the cut was "Watching Ellie," which starred "Seinfeld" alumnus Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a Los Angeles lounge singer.
Meanwhile, the forensic crime drama "Crossing Jordan" will take a hiatus in the fall but return in January after star Jill Hennesy gives birth to her first child, Zucker said.
Existing NBC shows that will not return in the fall include the freshman comedies "Hidden Hills, "In-Laws" and "A.U.S.A.," as well as the onetime hit "Just Shoot Me."

$50 Million for 8th Season
Ray Romano
Not bad for a sportswriter from Queens. Ray Romano has struck a deal that will make him the highest-paid actor in television with a nearly $50 million salary for the upcoming eighth season of "Everybody Loves Raymond," sources said.
At the same time, CBS has quietly struck a deal to renew the show for an additional two seasons at a hefty license fee of nearly $6 million an episode.
After lengthy negotiations, sources said Romano has come to an agreement with CBS and "Raymond" producers Worldwide Pants and HBO Independent Prods. for a one-season deal that will pay him about $1.7 million-$1.8 million per episode, up from his current salary of roughly $800,000 per episode, sources said.
The new deal puts Romano in a tax bracket ahead of "Frasier" star Kelsey Grammer, who held the record with the $1.6 million-per-episode pact he struck with Paramount Network TV and NBC two years ago.

Found in Salad
Lizard Head
A lizard head found in a carry-out salad from a restaurant in this eastern Iowa city (Coralville) has tested negative for salmonella, a bacteria that causes food poisoning.
The lizard head was found May 2 in a Santa Fe Chicken Salad prepared at Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar.
A complaint was filed with the health department by John Hellstein after his wife discovered the lizard head in a salad she ordered for lunch.
"Obviously, she was upset," said Hellstein, a University of Iowa professor of dentistry. "I don't expect she will be eating Santa Fe salads anytime soon."
Apple Corp. LP, the owner of the Applebee's restaurant, issued a statement Friday. In it, the corporation apologized and said it had confirmed it was an isolated incident. The restaurant is now using pre-cut, pre-cleaned lettuce for its salads, the statement said.

Plea Deal in L.A.
Jeffrey Jones
Veteran character actor Jeffrey Jones said on Monday he was close to reaching a plea deal to resolve child pornography charges filed against him last year.
Jones, who played a high school principal in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and a Puritan in "The Crucible," appeared in a downtown Los Angeles court on Monday to advise the judge that a disposition in the case was near.
His attorney, Leonard Levine, said he was confident that a settlement in the case would be announced at a June 12 hearing. Levine would not reveal any details of the negotiations until after a deal is reached.
The 55-year-old actor was charged with child pornography possession and hiring a 14-year-old boy to pose for sexually explicit photographs between September 2000 and May 2002.
If convicted, Jones, who also played music-loving Emperor Joseph II in "Amadeus," faces up to three years in prison and the prospect of registering as a sex offender for life.
Officials said the charges against Jones do not involve sex acts being performed or any video being taken.

'Old Spice's Festival in the Pit'
Battle Mountain
It didn't take a deodorant company long to hear opportunity knocking after a magazine dubbed this northeast Nevada town the nation's armpit.
Old Spice deodorant has agreed to sponsor Battle Mountain's "Festival of the Pit" from Aug. 15-17 under a new name: "Old Spice's Festival in the Pit."
In response to the Washington Post Magazine article, the town last year launched the quirky celebration, with events such as a deodorant toss to replace the old-fashion egg toss.
The company plans to spend about $75,000 on the festival, with events such as an armpit beauty pageant, a sweat t-shirt contest and a "quick-draw" antiperspirant contest.
