Amid the economic wreckage, some sectors still hiring (mcclatchydc.com)
The U.S. economy is sinking deeper into recession and companies are shedding hundreds of thousands of jobs, but the technology firms that Santa Fe, N.M., venture capitalist Trevor Loy invests in haven't stopped growing.
SCOTT FOUNDAS: "CLINT EASTWOOD, AMERICA'S DIRECTOR" (laweekly.com)
"You've made the first movie of the Obama generation!" exclaimed an audience member, as he rushed up to Clint Eastwood after a recent screening of Gran Torino. "Well," the 78-year-old actor-director replied, without missing a beat, "I was actually born under Hoover."
Lewis Beale: Fast chat with 'Doubt' writer-director John Patrick Shanley (Newsday)
John Patrick Shanley is one of the fortunate few who has won the entertainment industry's equivalent of a trifecta: the Oscar for his 1987 "Moonstruck" screenplay, an Emmy for co-writing the 2002 HBO movie "Live From Baghdad" and a Tony for his 2004 play "Doubt: A Parable" (which also won a Pulitzer).
Matt Littman: In Defense of Tom Cruise (huffingtonpost.com)
Tom Cruise is one of those rare people -- someone who consistently gives a good product to an extremely fickle audience. I'm not saying he's a poet, but I am saying that he's great at his job.
Roger Ebert: GRAN TORINO (R; 3 1/2 stars)
I would like to grow up to be like Clint Eastwood. Eastwood the director, Eastwood the actor, Eastwood the invincible, Eastwood the old man. What other figure in the history of the cinema has been an actor for 53 years, a director for 37, won two Oscars for direction, two more for best picture, plus the Thalberg Award, and at 78 can direct himself in his own film and look meaner than hell? None, that's how many.
Christmas was established as a 'Federal Holiday' by Congress and President Grant in 1870. It has been said that their motivation for doing so was to help bring the country together during the difficult post-Civil War reconstruction period. Considering the 'establishment clause' of the constitution, the question is...
Should the status of Christmas as a 'Federal Holiday' be rescinded due to the religious nature of the celebration?

The USS Kittiwake (ASR -13) was a Chanticleer-class submarine rescue ship during the Korean War (1950 - 1953). Harvey Milk served as a Chief Petty Officer. He eventually reached the rank of Junior Lieutenant before his honorable discharge in 1955.
Submarine Rescue Ships were designed as submarine rescue vehicles capable of deploying the McCann rescue chamber and supporting deep sea diving operations.

Milk - In Limited Theaters Now - WIDE Release on December 12th
After moving to San Francisco, the middle-aged New Yorker, Harvey Milk, became a Gay Rights activist and city politician. On his third attempt, he was elected to San Francisco's Board of Supervisors in 1977, making him the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in the USA. The following year, both he and the city's mayor, George Moscone, were shot to death by former city supervisor, Dan White, who blamed his former colleagues for denying White's attempt to rescind his resignation from the board.
Mr. Milk had been the subject of several books and the Academy Award-winning documentary feature, The Times of Harvey Milk (1984); but Milk (2008) is the first fictional feature to explore private aspects of the man's personal life and career.
Milk was filmed on location in San Francisco. Many of Mr Milk's real-life surviving friends and former associates participated in the making of this film, several appearing on camera.

The lion, the witch and the wardrobe crew is getting the boot from the Magic Kingdom.
Proving that not even Mickey is immune to the downturn, Disney has decided against coproducing and distributing the third film in the Chronicles of Narnia series, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. And that means Walden Media, the production company behind the C.S. Lewis adaptations, will have to find a new partner for the big-screen franchise to continue.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Disney's departure is based on "budgetary and logistical reasons," though reps for both declined to comment beyond that.
The first film in the series, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, grossed $292 million domestically and an additional $453 million overseas, per Box Office Mojo; this summer's Prince Caspian dipped to $141 million and $278 million, respectively.

A giant snowman named Snowzilla has mysteriously appeared again this year - despite the city's cease-and-desist order.
Someone again built the giant snowman in Billy Powers' front yard in an east Anchorage neighborhood. Snowzilla reappeared before dawn Tuesday.
For the last three years, Snowzilla - to the delight of some and the chagrin of others - has been a very large feature in Powers' yard. In 2005, Snowzilla rose 16 feet. He had a corncob pipe and a carrot nose and two eyes made out of beer bottles.
This year, Snowzilla is estimated to be 25 feet tall. He's wearing a black stovepipe hat and scarf.
Some 7,000 jumbo-sized snow globes were recalled by Hallmark Cards Inc. because the holiday decorations can act as a magnifying glass when exposed to sunlight and ignite nearby combustible materials, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said on Tuesday.
The snowman-shaped snow globes were sold in October and November at Hallmark Gold Crown stores nationwide for about $100 each.
The consumer agency said Hallmark has received two reports of the snow globes igniting nearby materials but no injuries have been reported.
Consumers who bought the snow globes, which measure 11 by 12 by 17 inches (28 by 30 by 43cm), should immediately remove them from exposure to sunlight and return to a Hallmark Gold Crown store for a full refund.

A smashed guitar from the late grunge rocker Kurt Cobain has been sold to an unidentified private collector for $100,000.
Helen Hall, a broker in England, says it's the second-highest known price for an item of Cobain memorabilia. The seller was punk rocker Sluggo of The Grannies and Hullabaloo.
The sale was confirmed by Jacob McMurray, senior curator at the Experience Music Project in Seattle, where the taped-up Fender Mustang guitar in sunburst finish was displayed for a time.
"It's a really cool-looking guitar because it's smashed and held together with duct tape and Kurt Cobain wrote on it," McMurray said.
In a survey of a random sample of U.S. emergency physicians, virtually all said they believed that law enforcement officers use excessive force to arrest and detain suspects.
The sample included 315 respondents. While 99.8 percent believed excessive force is used, almost as many (97.8 percent) reported that they had managed cases that they suspected or that the patient stated had involved excessive use of force by law enforcement officers.
Nearly two thirds (65.3 percent) estimated that they had treated two or more cases of suspected excessive use of force per year among their patients, according to a report of the survey published in the January 2009 issue of the Emergency Medicine Journal.
Blunt trauma inflicted by fists or feet was the most common type of injury cited in cases of suspected use of excessive force, followed by "overly tight" handcuffs.

Amur tigers, formerly known as Siberian tigers, are critically endangered due to their natural habitats being destroyed through deforestation and the loss of natural prey. Warner Bros. Television sued CBS in Los Angeles on Wednesday, claiming it is owed nearly $70 million for producing and licensing the hit sitcom 'Two and a Half Men' .
Warner Bros. claims that its agreement with CBS granted it the ability to recoup $49 million in losses on the show's first four seasons and other financial incentives.
Warner Bros. claims CBS will soon owe it $20 million now that "Two and a Half Men" has remained a hit in its fifth and sixth seasons.
Chris Ender, CBS' senior vice president of communications, issued a season-themed statement: "Wow, I wonder what they got the other networks for Christmas."
NBC said Tuesday that it will not allow a spot with multiple advertisers in the Super Bowl.
A day earlier, Los Angeles-based ad shop Cesario Migliozzi said it was discussing a plan with the network in which the agency, in a first, would pool eight advertisers to jointly buy at least one of the remaining spots in the February 1 game.
"We've not given them permission, and there is no way we are going to," said Seth Winter, senior vp sports and Olympics sales for NBC.
Furthermore, an NBC representative said the ad was never in the cards, although CM partner Michael Migliozzi strongly denied that, saying that he had been discussing the co-op proposal with an NBC Sports sales rep for two weeks.
Sony and Toyota are struggling. Job cuts dominate the headlines. But one brand name is thriving in Japan amid the economic slowdown - Mickey Mouse.
According to the company that runs Tokyo Disneyland, Japan's busiest theme park will be more packed than ever over Christmas and New Year's. Despite the bad economy, it's already been a record year for an escape that's cheaper than the average night out in pricey Tokyo.
The park's operator, Oriental Land Co., estimates a record 26.5 million people will visit Tokyo Disneyland and its nearby sister park, Disneysea, during the fiscal year ending in March. The company is forecasting sales of a record $4.2 billion, up almost 10 per cent.
Around the world, Disney's theme parks have been a bright spot for the brand this year as people seem to look for an escape from bad times.

Donald Duck may have struggled under Mickey Mouse's shadow, but in Sweden millions of people have tuned in to watch the hot-headed Disney character's Christmas special every year since 1959.
Between 3.5 million and 3.8 million people are expected to watch the one-hour special "Donald Duck and his friends wish you all a Merry Christmas" this year, said spokeswoman Ulrika Lundgren Borg of SVT public television that airs the program.
But the Svenska Dagbladet newspaper reported that viewership for the irascible duck's show has dropped by one million since 1997, the height of the Christmas special's popularity.
Still, SVT programming director Thomas Nilsson said the future of the sailor suit-wearing hero, known as Kalle Ankas in the Nordic country, was safe in Sweden.
