M Is FOR MASHUP - Dec 24th, 2008
Years' End Useo
By DJ Useo
As the new year rears it's newborn head, I look back at the past months
& see I put tons of time into the world of bootlegs. I didn't make
much money mixing, but it was very rewarding in every other way. I
love the tunes of course, but the big payoff was meeting & greeting
the DJ's, fans, & sundry leechers (people who frequent your site
without commenting). Among the the best moments I had was doing two
actual live shows. The audience had no idea who I was, but they took
to mashups like fried catfish to tartar. Thanks to DJ Petrushka for
the opportunities. I plan to pursue live shows more in the future.
Before my tracks even reach the posted stage, they often get an airing
from international pals over the MSN or YAHOO chats. One of the most
satisfying aspects of bootlegging for me is sampling & sharing
tracks the public hasn't seen yet. It often leads to exclusive
tracks for my radio shows, or podcasts, so it really benefits me &
the listeners, too. Sometimes I even manage to assist the mixers with
slight tips. Having been musically trained, I tend to notice
pitching, & other matters that crop up when producing a
track. Likewise, they frequently give me advice as well. It's very
satisfying in any field of expertise to discuss with your
peers. Keeps ya from posting blatant mistakes, too. Akk!
So this last year I've been mixing up lots of mashups, remixes, long
mixes, podcasts & radio shows. I even got a fair bunch of tracks done
with my own vocals. UK mixer MP3J has a post of his featuring some
'singing' of mine. Check it out here at my Multiply site.(
Links to all my tracks are available at groovytimewithdjuseo.blogspot.com In addition, you can find lots
of extra tracks I made for mashup compilations like 'Bhangra
Bootay', 'Night Of The Living MMonster Mashups' & several others.
Located at the same site are lots of posts of my long mixes, many
crafted for the mix site B00mb0x (bmbx.org). You'll find a
wide variety of music in my long mixes ranging from the house music
of 'Dance Music For Global DJ Network (1:00:25)' to the recently
posted novelty-madness of 'Djuseo_-_Endurance_Test.mp3'. You can
find lots of long mashup mixes on my site, & even the ever-popular
'Top 40's Mix' of late 1940's tunes, & the crazed 'Black & White
Toon Mix' composed of tracks from early 1930's cartoon songs. I've
made long mixes that go from Goa to bootleg remixes & back
again. I'm confident you'll find material you'll like. The biggest
mix moments for me were teaming up with Budthweiser, Guv'nor, DJ
Petrushka, Alpha1999, & Andy_S to mix the 'SOUND OF' series of mixes
wherein we all add our part till it's a long mix. Satisfying work
there, for sure.
Then there's the podcasts of mine you can find at
djuseo8.podomatic.com &
djuseo.podomatic.com Usually
they are me hosting a recorded format of mashups. Good stuff if you
like using your ears. lol Then we reach the most rewarding work I
did in the last year. The radio shows. When I started a show at
http://globaldjnetwork.com/ there were all kinds of radio shows of
varying styles, so I chose to do 'The Qradips Show' where I would
play the more unusual mashups out there. The response was
immediately gratifying & after many more shows I even set up a web
site to host the past episodes (qradip.blogspot.com/). The
show has moved to sound-unsound-network.com/ but the fun
has not lessened. Listen Tuesdays at 7 pm gmt, 2 pm est. You won't
believe how crazy a mashup can sound & still be appealing. I've also
been doing a 2-hour weekly Friday radio show with DJ Petrushka
called 'Sound-unsound This Week'. We play the most likeable mashups
out there, plus a few 30-minute exclusive mixes too. No past shows
posted, so this is one to catch live every Friday 8-10 pm gmt 3-5 pm
est. Feel free to chat with the dj's in the shout box on the site.
Lastly, you've probably never heard of it (lol), but I've been continuing
my weekly mashup column called 'M Is For Mashup'. I'll keep you up
to date with what's happening on the bootleg posting scene, & I'll
give you the links to the best tracks as well. Every Wednesday at
BartCop Entertainment I recommend the site in
general. Fine reading & great links to boot.
Well, this has been a 'Useo' year-end wrap-up. I've got 100 tracks
already made for the new year & better ones being made all the
time. See you in the new year. I hope you'll be listening.- DJ Konrad

Mix Of The Week - There's an hour & ten minutes of complete aural
madness with my 'Djuseo_-_Endurance_Test.mp3' posted here - (www.bmbx.org/2008/11/29/endurance-test/)
Can you pass the test of playing the complete mix? Invite some friends
over & find out.
Mashup Tip : The More you mash, the more you hear mash,
The more you hear mash, the less you play non-mash,
The less you play non-mash, the less you mash.
The less you mash, the more you want to mash.
Mashup Tip : Egg Nog,Liquor, & mashups are a strong combination. Remember to bootleg in moderation, but, pass the nog!

New Question
The 'Christmas Conundrum' Edition
Christmas was established as a 'Federal Holiday' by Congress and President Grant in 1870. It has been said that their motivation for doing so was to help bring the country together during the difficult post-Civil War reconstruction period. Considering the 'establishment clause' of the constitution, the question is...
Should the status of Christmas as a 'Federal Holiday' be rescinded due to the religious nature of the celebration?

Quick Turnaround
Bruce Springsteen
Bruce Springsteen says he was energized to make a new album quickly after recording a song he calls a "love-in-the-time-of-Bush meditation."
In notes posted on his Web site Tuesday, Springsteen explains the creation of his new disc "Working on Dream" (due out Jan. 27) - which follows his last album, "Magic," by only 15 months - an unusually quick turnaround for him.
It started with the song "What Love Can Do."
Springsteen says he usually doesn't write that quickly, but that the excitement from "Magic" left "more than enough fuel for the fire to keep going."

Delays Strike Vote
Screen Actors Guild
Hollywood's deeply divided Screen Actors Guild said on Monday it has postponed a planned strike authorization vote set to begin on January 2, so that it can "address the unfortunate division and restore consensus."
The delay comes after high-profile members such as Tom Hanks and George Clooney lent their names to a campaign that opposed strike authorization. The "yes" side counts such celebrities as Mel Gibson and Martin Sheen.
"This division does not help our effort to get an agreement from the AMPTP that our members will ratify," the union's chief negotiator, Doug Allen, wrote in a letter to members posted on the guild's Web site, referring to the studios' bargaining agent, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
SAG has been working without a contract since its old one expired on June 30. The main sticking point in the negotiations is pay for programing shown on the Internet. After a federal mediator last month failed to solve the impasse, SAG said it would seek strike authorization.

Maker Swamped By Orders
Baydan Shoes
The maker of the shoes that an Iraqi journalist hurled at US resident George W. Bush has had to take on 100 extra staff to cope with a surge in demand for his footwear, he said on Monday.
"Between the day of the incident and 1:00 pm today we have received orders totalling 370,000 pairs", Istanbul-based Serkan Turk, head of sales at Baydan Shoes, told AFP.
Normally the firm sold only 15,000 pairs a year of the model that Muntazer al-Zaidi threw at the US resident at a press conference in Baghdad on December 14 to become an instant hero across the Arab world, he said.
Formerly prosaically dubbed Model 271, the black polyurethane-soled shoes have been renamed Bush Shoes, he said.

Snot Worth $5,300
Scarlett Johansson
Apparently $5,300 is the going rate for what is presumably the most expensive used tissue in the world.
Last week, Scarlett Johansson got into the spirit of the holiday sniffles on the Tonight Show With Jay Leno. She claimed she caught the cold from costar Samuel L. Jackson. When after Leno handed her a tissue and the starlet gave a good blow, she joked that the used hanky had some value.
To test her hypothesis, the tissue was placed on the auction block on eBay, with proceeds benefiting USA Harvest.
Seems an anonymous, recession-proof fan dug deep into his or her pockets and anted up the big bucks for ScarJo's snot rag during a last-minute bidding war.

Co-Op Advertising
Super Bowl
NBC has allowed an advertising agency to buy a 30-second commercial spot on the Super Bowl to be carved up by a variety of marketers.
The Los Angeles-based agency, Cesario Migliozzi, intends to pay the going rate, $3 million, and cut a commercial that pushes eight different products simultaneously, guaranteeing marketers that each of their logos will appear on screen the entire 30 seconds.
The scheme would mark the first time a co-operative spot is used during the Super Bowl, which this year attracted 98 million viewers in the United States.
NBC has more than half a dozen 30-second spots left to sell for the February 1 game. Cesario Migliozzi says it must sign a deal with eight marketers to shell out $395,000 apiece by January 6 in order to secure a spot and cut a buzzworthy commercial.

Replacing O'Realy On Radio
Fred Thompson
Actor and former presidential candidate Fred Thompson is getting his own radio show.
Westwood One said Monday that "The Fred Thompson Show" will debut March 2, replacing "The Radio Factor With Bill O'Reilly," which ends its six-year run February 27. O'Reilly announced his decision to step down from the show this month, saying the workload for his radio and TV duties had become too much.
In his show, Thompson will share his conservative views on politics, topical issues and pop culture stories as well as conduct guest interviews and take listener calls. The two-hour show, broadcast from the Westwood One studios in Washington, will air live from noon-2 p.m. weekdays.

Lawsuit Dismissed
Peter Berg
A lawsuit against director Peter Berg over an accident that killed an assistant propmaster on "The Kingdom" set has been dismissed.
The parents of Nick Papac sued Berg, a driver and a production company in August over an accident that killed their son in 2006.
Berg was riding in a sport utility vehicle that had an accident on a highway closed for filming the "The Kingdom."
Records in Los Angeles show Papac's parents moved for dismissal last week, but do not indicate whether there was a settlement.

Replacing Brit Hume
Bret Baier
Fox "News" Channel has selected White House correspondent Bret Baier to replace Brit Hume as anchor of its weeknight 6 p.m. newscast.
Hume is cutting back to part-time work at Fox, and was anchoring his last newscast Tuesday. Baier will start his new job on Jan. 5.
Baier is familiar to viewers of the show as Hume's occasional substitute and from his work as Fox's top person in the White House. He said he plans "on continuing to maintain the prestige of the program in every way I know how."

A woman in the San Francisco Bay area was jumped by four men, taunted for being a lesbian, repeatedly raped and left naked outside an abandoned apartment building, authorities said Monday.
Detectives say the 28-year-old victim was attacked Dec. 13 after she got out of her car, which bore a rainbow gay pride sticker. The men, who ranged from their late teens to their 30s, made comments indicating they knew her sexual orientation, said Richmond police Lt. Mark Gagan.
"It just pushes it beyond fathomable," he said. "The level of trauma - physical and emotional - this victim has suffered is extreme."
Gay rights advocates note that hate crimes based on sexual orientation have increased nationwide as of late. There were 1,415 such crimes in 2006 and 1,460 in 2007, both times making up about 16 percent of the total, according to the FBI.
"Anytime there is an anti-LGBT initiative, we tend to see spikes both in the numbers and the severity of attacks," Avy Skolnik, a coordinator with the New York-based National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs said. "People feel this extra entitlement to act out their prejudice."

Rare Calves Found In Jungle
Javan Rhinos
Four calves of the world's rarest species of rhino have been found in remote jungle on Indonesia's Java island, giving hope to efforts to save them from extinction, an official said Tuesday.
"Four Javan rhinos of six to seven months age were seen by scientists on the beach near the jungle during a recent field survey," Agus Primabudi, the head of the Ujung Kulon National Park in West Java, told AFP.
Alerted to the presence of humans, the baby rhinos fled into the park to where two adult rhinos aged roughly 35 to 36, believed to be their parents, were staying, Primabudi said.
The Javan rhino, which is distinguished by its small size, single horn and loose skin folds, is likely the most endangered large mammal on the planet, according to WWF.
