When the new mix/mashup forum GLOBAL DJ NETWORK started up, they decided to have a radio station on the side to play the bootlegs that get posted. I was honoured to be asked to do a show myself. What a shock, eh?! In order to diversify the radio line-up, the site administrator, Mad Dog Inc. asked each of us to pick an area of music to give us each a distinctive type of show. As much as I love the direct pop mashups, I've always had a passion for the tracks that take a path away from the mainstream. Away from the mainstream in this case means mashups that combine rap & pop vocals with music that you don't often hear mashed.
For instance, my show this week has a nice 15 minute section of mashups that use country music. Bootlegger Autopilot defies all the odds with his track "Betty Boy" (Spider Bait vs John Denver) & gives Mr.Denver's "Thank God I'm A Country Boy" the same kind of edge you might hear on a Metallica track. The mysterious mixer Roundbog goes even further out with his new track "Jesus Christ, What Time Is It?" (Andrew Lloyd Webber vs KLF vs The 45 King). I bet you never thought you'd hear rapping to JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, & like it. The furthest out track for me came from the popular normal masher, Apollo Zero, who made the appealing, yet unusual "You Took The Words Right Out of My Mouth 2.0" (Meatloaf vs Giorgio Moroder vs Siobahn Fahey). I was often of a mind that the Meatloaf track was already a novelty track, but I suppose that says more about me than the Meatloaf song.
Playing unusual mashups gives me an outlet for many of my humourous tracks. The audience responds well when I play them tracks with the Muppets in them, so you get "Flying Swedish Chef" (Muppets vs Beatles), & "Beeker Solution" (Pete Tong vs Muppets). The ever popular sponge cartoon character gets a reworking with my bootleg "Spongebob Squarepusher" (Spongebob vs Squarepusher). I got a swell reaction to the mashup I made "Peaches En Regalia For You" (Britney Spears vs Frank Zappa) from everyone but the copyright holders. (That track is consequently no longer in release. lol) Lately, I thought I'd developed past making, shall we say "goofy" tracks, but when I get asked, that's more than I can resist. So you'll hear my new track "Plantman vs The Bushman" (Gary Young vs Magik Johnson) in an upcoming show soon.
The best news about having a radio show like THE QRADIPS SHOW for me is that next week I get to feature all Halloween tracks. I've always had a strong penchant for that holiday. It's just so much fun. Costumes, parties, candy, & mock-spookiness hold vast appeal for me, so put them all together & I'm sold. October 27th's THE QRADIPS SHOW will be only Halloween mashups like Mr. Fab's "I Want My Mummy" (Steve Martin vs The Who) & King.Of.Pants.'s "Frankenbooted"(As'st). I may even have a few (hint, hint) unreleased exclusives from the likes of (Name Withheld) & (Not Disclosed).Hard to resist, eh?
One last thing I should mention for those of you not Michigan-based like me, is what does the word "Qradips" mean? Well, the way I hear it (or tell it), QRADIPS is an old American Indian word meaning "combined smoke signals" .A perfect alternate word for mashups, especially since Europeans often dislike the term 'mashups'. (I don't know why? Any thoughts?)
No registration required to listen to Global DJ Network radio, but if you do register & log in, you get to chat with the dj's live, & access the posted links to mixes & mashups. THE QRADIPS show airs Mondays at 8 pm gmt, & 3 pm est. I always post aired episodes

"There is the opportunity to reach a younger audience, and that's almost all done now through peer-to-peer recommendation. Mario Tarradell: Lee Ann Womack knows how to put torch in her tunes (The Dallas Morning News)
Today's country music industry banks on youth-targeted, up-tempo, positive radio fodder that would've been called pop three decades ago. But Lee Ann Womack remains an adult voice of a seemingly bygone art form. She continues to craft gorgeous traditional country records such as "Call Me Crazy," which arrives in stores this week.

Well, I believe the Benelux countries (Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg) are composed of (B) 3 "nations." For weeks, Hollywood had been criticized for not contributing enough to defeat a ballot initiative in California that would ban same-sex marriage. Now, members of the film and TV industries are sweeping in to preserve gays' right to get hitched.
Maybe they were planning for a Hollywood ending all along?
After news of Proposition 8's supporters outraising its opponents spread and the measure gained support in public opinion polls, many Hollywood insiders have made declarations of support - financial and otherwise - against the ban. While the "No on 8" campaign hasn't quite reached the buzziness of other celebrity causes du jour, momentum is growing.
"I don't know what people are scared of," DeGeneres joked on her show Wednesday. "Maybe they think their children will be influenced (by gay marriage), but I've got to tell you, I was raised by two heterosexuals. Everywhere I looked - heterosexuals. And they did not influence me. It's time we love people for who they are and let them love who they want."
Does U.S. vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin consider herself intellectual? You betcha!
Although she didn't name a single newspaper or magazine when CBS News anchor Katie Couric asked where she got her information, Sarah Palin told People magazine she has always been a "voracious reader."
Also, Palin says if she and husband Todd had had a sixth child, they have already picked a name for a boy joining siblings Track, Bristol, Willow, Piper and Trig.

William Shatner is setting his phaser to stun against his old "Star Trek" co-star George Takei. In a video posted on Shatner's Web site Wednesday, he lashed out at Takei for not inviting him to his wedding last month.
The 77-year-old Kirk said Takei, who played Enterprise helmsman Sulu, apparently harbors a grudge against him that kept him from being invited to Takei's nuptials.
"The whole thing makes me feel badly," Shatner said in the video. "Poor man. There is such a sickness there. It's so patently obvious that there is a psychosis there. I don't know what his original thing about me was. I have no idea."
Takei and Brad Alman tied the knot Sept. 15. "Star Trek" alums Nichelle Nichols and Walter Koenig - who played Uhura and Chekhov, respectively - were among the attendees at the multicultural ceremony at the Japanese American National Museum. Takei and Altman had previously stated that Shatner was invited to their wedding, but he never RSVPed.
Actress Charlotte Rampling and director Wong Kar-wai will receive awards for their contributions to modern cinema at the Stockholm International Film Festival.
Rampling will receive the lifetime achievement award for her "impressive portrayals of some of the most memorable female characters in modern cinema," the festival said Wednesday.
Wong will be honored with the visionary award for "capturing the beauty of the fleeting moment on the silver screen."
Kevin Spacey will be behind the scenes and not on stage when London's Old Vic Theatre opens its 2009 season in January.
The Academy Award-winning actor will direct the world premiere of Joe Sutton's "Complicit," a new American play about a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist facing prosecution. It runs Jan. 7-Feb. 21, 2009.
Spacey, an Oscar winner for "American Beauty" and "The Usual Suspects," has run the legendary theater since 2003 and appeared there early this year in a critically acclaimed revival of David Mamet's "Speed-the-Plow."
"Complicit" will be followed by a revival of Brian Friel's Irish drama "Dancing at Lughnasa," starring Niamh Cusack and Andrea Corr from singing group The Corrs. It runs Feb. 26-May 9.
Grammy-award winning singer-songwriter Carole King sings Tuesday Oct.21, 2008 at the Democratic headquarters in Kirksville, Mo. King has been on the road for the past month and a half visiting swing states and will continue campaigning for Barack Obama over the next two weeks.

A rare first edition of one of William Butler Yeats' most political poems, "Easter 1916," was sold Wednesday at Adam's auctioneers in central Dublin to an anonymous bidder for $9,600 - roughly double the forecast price.
Auction house director David Britton said the original copy of the poem - one of just three known to exist worldwide - received exceptional interest from bidders because it appealed to enthusiasts both of Yeats and of Ireland's independence struggle from Britain.
Yeats wrote the poem in the months following the Easter rebellion of 1916, when guerrillas seized key Dublin government buildings for a week before surrendering to British forces.
The poet distributed only 25 copies of the work at first, for fear that wider publication might stir violence. Just three copies are known to remain today; the other two are in the National Library in Dublin and the British Library in London.
The Republican National Committee has spent more than $150,000 to clothe and accessorize vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and her family since her surprise pick by John McCain in late August.
According to financial disclosure records, the accessorizing began in early September and included bills from Saks Fifth Avenue in St. Louis and New York for a combined $49,425.74.
The records also document a couple of big-time shopping trips to Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis, including one $75,062.63 spree in early September.
September payments were also made to Barney's New York ($789.72) and Bloomingdale's New York ($5,102.71).
Thomas Riccio, who testified at Simpson's recent kidnapping-robbery trial, sued Philip McGraw - known on the show as Dr. Phil - and Stage 29 Media for unspecified damages. The lawsuit claims defamation, fraud, emotional distress and being portrayed in a false light.
Riccio said that on the show he was referred to as "the shady deal maker," "a puppet master who would sell his soul for a coin" and "the ring leader of this crime."
He said that during the show, McGraw falsely claimed that Riccio "set O.J. Simpson up and told people to bring guns into the room."
Riccio said his denial of those statements and his claim that he is anti-gun were edited out and replaced with a shot of him nodding his head as if in agreement with the host.
An anti-war protester confronted former Bush administration aide Karl Rove while he spoke at a San Francisco mortgage bankers' meeting.
A statement by the group Code Pink identified the woman as 58-year-old Janine Boneparth, who tried to handcuff Rove in what she called a citizen's arrest for "treason."
Rove, who was speaking Tuesday at the Mortgage Bankers Association's annual convention, elbowed Boneparth away as she was escorted off the stage.
In total, five Code Pink members were removed from the hall during Rove's appearance. The organization says none of the five women were charged.
Asked by a third-grader what a vice president does, Republican candidate Sarah Palin responded that the vice president is the president's "team mate" but also "runs the Senate" and "can really get in there with the senators and make a lot of good policy changes."
While aimed at a typical 8-year-old, Palin's explanations oversimplify the Constitution's definition of the duties of the vice president and don't match the office's traditional role in Senate activities.
The vice president's main duty is to replace the president if the president dies, resigns, is removed from office or can no longer carry out his or her duties for other reasons. The Constitution names the vice president as the president of the Senate but allows the vice president to cast a vote only to break a tie.
Traditionally, the vice president appears in the Senate for ceremonial events and in case of a tie vote. Although the vice president can preside over the Senate, vice presidents have left that day-to-day chore to senators themselves. In the past, each president has determined the role of the vice president in an administration.

A girl in pigtails bounds into the kitchen after school and asks her mother to guess what she learned that day. "I learned how a prince married a prince, and I can marry a princess," she exclaims to her mortified mom.
This television advertisement for a ballot initiative that would ban same-sex marriage in California urges voters to "protect children" by approving the measure.
There's not a word about education in Proposition 8, but what public schools will be required to teach about same-sex marriage has emerged as the central issue in the campaign.
An estimated 52,000 children are being raised by two mothers or two fathers in California, which is one of 12 states with comprehensive anti-bullying laws that apply to gay students and children with unconventional families.
The sides of some of London's red buses will soon carry ads asserting there is "probably no God," as nonbelievers fight what they say is the preferential treatment given to religion in British society.
Organizers of a campaign to raise funds for the ads said Wednesday they received more than $113,000 in donations, almost seven times their target, in the hours since they launched the project on a charity Web site. Supporters include Oxford University biologist Richard Dawkins, who donated $9,000.
The money will be used to place posters on 30 buses carrying the slogan "There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life." The plan was to run the ads for four weeks starting in January, but so much money has been raised that the project may be expanded.
The British Humanist Association, which is administering the fundraising drive, said it had been so successful the campaign might spread to other cities including Manchester and Edinburgh.

Budapest Zoo's newborn southern white rhinoceros calf, Ceratotherium simum, foreground, is seen with his mother Lulu after his birth in Budapest, Hungary, Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2008. The calf was born early morning Wednesday without human help and intervention. Due to the brother-sister relationship of the zoo's rhinos, there was no chance for natural breeding. Veterinarians of the Budapest Zoo in co-operation with their colleagues from Germany and Austria used artificial insemination. This was the second successful birth of a rhino in the Budapest Zoo using artificial insemination.
