Agassi, The World of Taxation and Nosy Sports Editors

Agassi, The World of Taxation and Nosy Sports Editors

Andre, of whom I'm a huge fan, is so cavalier as to which country gets his taxes, so cavalier it shows a peek into the window of the super-rich athletes who know nothing more than (in his case) how to play a passing shot against Sampras.

Technological camera angles that have proven Agassi to be one of the finest players of our century have also shown he is a master salesman in the sport of tennis. His endorsement of Nike and Head and other brands have given him a throne to perpetual sales ability.

He has no clue to the taxable income that comes his way, nor should he. That's what his accountants are employed for at great expense. He is way too busy playing passing shots against his practise partners. He knows his money will be OK (unless he has crooked accountants).

Andre, you're a progressive guy whom I've admired since your hair was at your butt level. Where and how you pay your taxes should not be an issue of the sports fan writers (they want to know what country is your tax base), only solely of the government where you file your enormous earnings.

Why fans need to know any of the afore-mentioned biz-stuff is not any of their business and none of the sports writers damn business. Pay your taxes in the country of your choice, not where some sports writers think you SHOULD pay them. What the issue remains to be what an excellent provider of tennis entertainment to the world you have been and remain to be. God bless your talent and hopefully someone with as much class you have will inspire future tennis players, and competitors in general. You have every bit as much class and humility as Michael Jordan. When the time comes, exit with style, pay your damn taxes in the country you feel you're getting something out of them, and keep making commercials and wowing young females until you get old like me. Just some "wisdom from an elder".

Re: Anti-Bush Books

Anti-Bush books continue to be big sellers...

But not all of them, sigh. My new one, Business Secrets from the Stars, is fiction, but it is anti-Bush, and everyone who's read it thought it was hilariously funny. That's about 5 or 10 people ...

The point -- aside from my need to whine piteously -- being that in all of the arts, people are aware of the great successes but sadly unaware of the equally good stuff that remains obscure. Well, I guess that's why we call it "obscure"!

BBC America - Friday

VCR Alert

This weeks episode of Blackadder is the best of series 2. Called "Potato", we find Blackadder playing for the Queen's hand as he sets out to explore the world like old "What a potato I've found" Walter Raleigh.

Full of their best lines this shows what Britcoms are really about. Look for Tom "4th Dr Who" Baker in a special guest star role. He has always said it's the appearance he liked himself in least, but he's very funny. One of the great lines is when Melchett hands Blackadder a map from England's finest cartographers. Its a blank page and Blackadder is told to fill it in as he goes. Of course, Blackadder isn't really going exploring. He's just going to the south of France for a few months, but that was before he talked with his captain Rum.

Seems Rum not only can't find the south seas, he can't find the south of France. Kind of like George Bush looking at a map of the world without a "you are here" label on it. But as they say Rum was a 2nd class sailor but a 1st class entree. This episode can stand alone which is something so few tv comedies can do.

On another note, I've heard people trying to come up with a replacement for the "F" word. Those of us who watch "Red Dwarf" know the word is SMEG. And if those smeg-heads at the FCC don't smegging like it, they can go smeg themselves.

Thank you, Mr. Hawk!

TCM Tonight

Swashbuckler Alert

Couple of good swashbuckling actors on TCM, Thursday, Mar 25th. Errol Flynn stars in "Santa Fe Trail" (along with argh! Ronald Reagan, Olivia de Havilland & the Skipper's dad, Alan Hale Sr). This movie is not so much about the actual trail but more about chasing John Brown around 'bloody Kansas'. Flynn portrays J E B Stuart while Reagan is George Armstrong Custer! Even with the presence of Red Ink Ronnie, this is a pretty good action flick.

Then immediately following "Santa Fe Trail", is the classic swashbuckler "The Mark of Zorro" starring Tyrone Power. This is perhaps the best swashbuckling film of all time. The climatic duel between Power and Basil Rathbone (aka Sherlock Holmes) is one of the best sword fights you'll ever see. Rathbone was actually an excellent fencer and once stated he could have injured or killed his opponents if he had wanted to. Unfortunately, he usually played the 'bad guy' and was the one who always died in the duels.

Check out both these films if you can. You'll be glad you did!

Pam

Thanks, Pam!

Chappaqua's Favorite Neighbor

Bill Clinton

On the second floor of the museum that was once Horace Greeley's house, under a huge portrait of old Horace himself, the New Castle Historical Society has laid out a modest exhibit called "Bill Clinton: Our Neighbor."

It's a grass-roots chronicle, consisting mostly of residents' snapshots and other ephemera, of the former president and his wife, Hillary, since their 1999 purchase of a house in the Westchester County village.

"I was flattered by the exhibit," said Bill Clinton, who attended the opening reception. "I love living here and am grateful for the appreciation of my neighbors."

For a nice read, Bill Clinton

Denies Obscene Gesture

Simon Cowell

Simon Cowell, the often brutally acerbic judge on the Fox television hit "American Idol," insists it was an innocent posture, not an obscene gesture.

Contrary to suggestions that he was directing an insult to fellow judge Paula Abdul by putting his middle finger to the side of his face during Tuesday's broadcast, Cowell denied flipping her the proverbial bird on prime-time TV.

Cowell and Fox were responding to queries raised after pictures of Cowell with his middle finger to his face were widely circulated online by Internet columnist Matt Drudge.

Appearing on 'Sopranos'

David Lee Roth

There's another "isn't that so-and-so?" cameo coming up on "The Sopranos": Former Van Halen lead singer David Lee Roth makes a quick appearance in this Sunday's episode.

Roth and his wild long, white hair are playing cards with Tony Soprano and a bunch of Soprano's cronies, including Silvio — played by another musician, E Street Band member Steve Van Zandt.

The singer tells Rolling Stone, "You know 20 years ago, Tony Soprano was driving around Jersey in his Iroc-Z just blasting the Van Halen."

Gets Reality TV Show

Victoria Gotti

Mob daughter and author Victoria Gotti, described as a cross between Carmela Soprano and Danielle Steele, will be the subject of a new TV series on the A&E Network.

The cable channel said Wednesday it was beginning production on "Growing Up Gotti," a new TV series featuring the daughter of the late mob boss John Gotti.

Victoria Gotti and her three sons "will form the unpredictable, sometimes humorous and often startling centerpiece to the series," A&E said.

Released From Hospital

Aretha Franklin

Aretha Franklin was released from the hospital Wednesday after being treated for an allergic reaction to antibiotics.

Franklin was admitted to Sinai-Grace Hospital Saturday after she coughed up some blood while on her tour bus, which was returning to the Detroit area from Chicago, her doctor, Claud Young, told WDIV-TV.

Young said it appears Franklin had an allergic reaction to penicillin she took while on the road. He said the singer was put on medication that brought her platelet level back to normal. Young has said Franklin's illness appears to be an isolated event.

Snares 'Frasier' Rights

Lifetime

Women's cable network Lifetime has acquired the exclusive cable rights to "Frasier," which will end its 11-year network run on NBC this season.

The network will begin airing the venerable sitcom in March 2006, when the local stations currently airing it lose their exclusivity. It is expected to air "Frasier" twice per weekday but has not scheduled either run.

"Will & Grace" will join Lifetime's schedule in September 2005.

Signs with Sony

Prince

Recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Prince, who used to complain that he was a "slave" to one former record label, has signed with Sony Corp.'s Columbia Records unit after several years as an independent artist, both parties said on Tuesday.

The worldwide deal initially covers only the funk veteran's upcoming album, "Musicology," which Columbia will release in the United States on April 20. The album coincides with Prince's first tour in six years, which begins on March 27 in Reno, Nevada.

Taped Last Episode

'Frasier'

Hugs, champagne toasts and snippets of poetry marked the filming of the last episode of NBC's "Frasier" after a remarkable 11-year run.

The series, which started as a spinoff of "Cheers," will end with an hour-long finale airing May 13.

The Paramount studio sound stage where "Frasier" spent its TV life was filled with family, friends and executives. Dinner was served to the audience of several hundred, and co-star Peri Gilpin even pitched in to pass around pizza.

Real Life Adventure In Avarice

Donald Trump

Donald Trump has tentatively shelved his plan to build another golf course in Westchester, proposing instead to put mansions on his 213-acre property and sell them for up to $25 million each.

The 17 new estates would sell for about $15 million to $25 million each, said Vincent Stellio, an executive vice president for development with the Trump organization. They'd rest on lots ranging from 4 to 19 acres and would come with swimming pools and tennis courts.

Exhibit to Come to U.S.

Princess Diana

A collection of Princess Diana's evening gowns, family photographs and childhood treasures will be featured in an exhibit that will make its United States debut in October.

"Diana, a Celebration," which includes Diana's wedding gown, diamond tiara and dramatic 25-foot train, will be on display at Ft. Lauderdale's Museum of Art Oct. 10-Dec. 31. Presenters said they hoped the collection would provide context to her life as a glamorous humanitarian and offer a window into her connection with the public.

The 150-piece exhibit is on display now in Toronto and attracted as many as 5,000 visitors a day during a 2002 stop in Japan.

Children's Charity in Trouble

'Heal the World Foundation'

Michael Jackson's Heal the World Foundation once spread millions of dollars around the globe to help children threatened by war and disease. But now, like its founder, the charity is in trouble.

Starved of funding and leadership, the organization has stopped donating to charitable causes and has been suspended in California since 2002 for failing to file yearly accounting statements, records show.

Other Jackson charities have withered as well, in a decline that began well before the latest child-molestation scandal broke.

His Heal L.A. project, established to help aid inner-city children after the Los Angeles riots, has been suspended in California since 2001, and his Neverland Zoo Foundation to preserve endangered animals was dissolved in 1998.

Ordered to Pay $63,500

Bobby Brown

A family court judge ordered R&B singer Bobby Brown jailed for 90 days or until he pays $63,500 in child support he owes the mother of two children he fathered.

Brown, released from a Georgia jail early so he could attend the contempt hearing, cried as he was led from the courtroom. He was to be jailed in the Norfolk County House of Correction.

Judge Paula Carey issued the ruling after Brown, husband of singer Whitney Houston, testified that he was unable to pay support he owes for children, now 12 and 14, that he fathered with Kim Ward, of Stoughton.

Brown, who was more than four hours late for the hearing, testified in a hushed voice, telling the judge that he was unable to pay because he had no job and no income.

Celebrates 50th Anniversary

Color TV

On March 25, 1954, Radio Corporation of America began manufacturing color television sets at its Bloomington, Ind., plant. It built 5,000 sets with 12-inch screens, known as the model CT-100 color receiver. They sold for $1,000 each, astronomical in those days.

They didn't get much use that year, since color telecasts were so rare. But the American love affair with the tube had taken a leap forward into the hues of real life.

The effort to bring color to the home screen was no easy feat. It occupied scientists throughout the late 1940s and early 1950s at RCA laboratories in Princeton, N.J. Their eventual concoction sounded like something out of a science fiction novel — the three-beam shadow mask tube.

After an experimental start by CBS, NBC, a subsidiary of RCA, developed and promoted color television in the marketplace. Ten years later, NBC was broadcasting as many as 40 hours a week in color.

For the rest, Color TV

Four-Eared Kitten Seeking Good Home

Lilly

A kitten born with four ears is desperately seeking a new home because her owners can't afford to have her neutered, German animal shelter officials say.

Six-month-old Lilly, born on a farm in the southern state of Bavaria, has an extra pair of slightly smaller, non-hearing ears just behind the normal two. Vets attribute the phenomenon to a gene mutation.

"We want to find Lilly the loving home she deserves. She is very kind and not a monster," said an employee at a sanctuary caring for Lilly and her nine normal brothers and sisters.

Farmers often give kittens away rather than pay to have them neutered to avoid over-breeding, sanctuary officials said.
