Mini-Tour
Marky Ramone
Marky Ramone says his two-date "Marky Ramone and Friends (an evening of music by the Ramones)" mini-tour is designed to gauge audience interest in hearing the music of the legendary New York band live in concert again.
The idea for the shows -- Detroit (Jan. 15, Alvin's) and Cleveland (Jan. 17, Beachland Ballroom) -- came to Ramone last summer when he played Ramones material at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum with Cleveland musicians C.J. Gunn (guitar), Aaron Dowell (bassist) and David Divine (singer) sitting in. He says original member Johnny Ramone is no longer interested in playing music. But fans attending the upcoming special shows can expect to hear material from all eras of the Ramones' 20-plus year career.
"I want to see how it is going to go over," said Ramone. "But this isn't a tribute band, I want to make that clear. I just want to show people what I played in the Ramones, who weren't able to see the Ramones and how other bands have, I guess, imitated or copped things from the Ramones, and have put it in their own style, which is fine."

Urges Others to Support Clark
Madonna
The Material Girl hopes people pay attention to her latest offstage act: endorsing Wesley Clark for president.
Madonna, who announced her support for the retired general before Christmas, posted a letter Wednesday on her eponymous Web site urging others to follow her.
"I am writing to you because the future I wish for my children is at risk," said the mother of two, who criticized the current White House occupant. "I'm supporting Wes Clark because in him I see the qualifications, character and vision that we so desperately need."
Madonna, who now calls London home, pledges to do all she can to help Clark's campaign and includes a Web link for people to contribute to the Democratic candidate. She also will hold fund-raiser at her Los Angeles residence sometime in the future, said Clark spokesman Bill Buck.

New Orleans Police Say...
Ray Davies
New Orleans police said that Ray Davies, founder of the pop group The Kinks, should not have tried to tackle the mugger who shot him in the leg.
"He pursued an armed suspect. We never recommend that people challenge anyone with a gun, because the chances of injury will escalate," said city police spokesman Sergeant Paul Accardo.
Davies was walking near the French Quarter with his New Orleans girlfriend when two men demanded the woman's purse at gunpoint.
She surrendered the purse, but Davies gave chase as they returned to their car. One turned and shot him in the leg.

Reader Suggestion
Koko Taylor
Lacking the strength in her legs to walk, the wheelchair-bound Taylor made her first public appearance since her illness on New Year's Eve for the grand opening of Koko Taylor's Blues Cafe in the Buffington Harbor Pavilion that serves the Majestic Star and Trump casinos in Gary. It's Taylor's third nightclub venture, although the latest is more a fine-dining establishment than a blues bar.

'The Producers'
A film version of the hit Broadway musical 'The Producers' will begin shooting early next year with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick repeating their roles as the rapscallion producer Max Bialystock and his nebbish accomplice Leopold Bloom.
Mel Brooks will produce the film version and co-write the screenplay with Thomas Meehan who co-wrote the script for the Broadway musical with Brooks. Susan Stroman, who directed and choreographed the stage show, will direct the film.
This third version of the comedy that gave the world the song "Springtime for Hitler" could be out by Christmas 2005, Universal Pictures spokesman Michael Moses said.

Unhappy About Limelight
Bush Twins
Resident Bush's twin daughters have shown little interest in their family's tradition of public service and are unhappy about the limelight they find themselves in, a new book says.
Jenna and Barbara Bush "have not campaigned or reined in their adolescent rebellions," Washington Post reporter Ann Gerhart says in the book published this week, "The Perfect Wife: The Life and Choices of Laura Bush."
The book recalls the twins' run-ins with the law in underage drinking incidents. The girls regard their Secret Service agents as "their chauffeurs, bellhops and valets," the book says. It says "they persist in seeing themselves as victims of daddy's job."
"The only lesson they wanted to impart to their children, (their father) said during the presidential campaign, was 'that I love you. I love you more than anything. And therefore you should feel free to fail or succeed, and you can be anything you want in America.'"

Names Successor to Plimpton
Paris Review
Four months after the death of George Plimpton, The Paris Review announced Wednesday that interim editor Brigid Hughes will permanently run the literary quarterly.
The 30-year-old Hughes takes on a role that Plimpton, who died last fall at 76, assumed with tireless enthusiasm for half a century. In deference to Plimpton, his official title — editor — will not be filled. Hughes has the newly established title of executive editor.

Woman With An Opinion
Arianna Huffington
Arianna Huffington says the idea that Howard Dean is not electable is "nothing short of idiotic."
Huffington — the Republican activist-turned left-wing commentator and California gubernatorial candidate — has become a Dean devotee.
"Dean is electable precisely because he's making a decisive break with the spinelessness and pussyfooting that have become the hallmark of the Democratic Party," Huffington wrote this week in the regular column she posts on her Web site and that's published in some newspapers.
"Far from Dean not being able to 'compete' with Bush on foreign policy, he's the one viable Democrat who isn't trying to compete on the playing field that Bush and Karl Rove have laid out."

Wood will be riding in the Sunday night parade of the Krewe of Bacchus, and Monaghan will be with the Krewe of Orpheus, the Monday night parade founded by singer Harry Connick Jr.
The two parades, with more than 1,000 riders in each, are highlights of the long weekend of parades and street parties leading up to Mardi Gras.

Debuting a Line of Suits
Steve Harvey
Actor-comedian Steve Harvey is coming out with his own line of suits. Harvey says the suits will look like they're worth $2,500, but will cost $300.
"A person can buy a suit for $300 and it looks like a tailored suit," Harvey told AP Radio. "My fan base can't afford $2,500 suits. A guy with a job can't suck out that much money, so I wanted to create the look and the fabric quality of a $2,500 suit. And you don't know how hard that was. It took almost four years of planning."
The Steve Harvey Collection will be in stores next month.

Britney's Ex Speaks
Jason Allen Alexander
Although they were married for only 55 hours--Britney Spears' childhood pal, Jason Allen Alexander, has been thrust into the public spotlight. Speaking to both Access Hollywood and Inside Edition from his home in rural Kentwood, Louisiana the 6'2" junior at Southeastern Louisiana University said his wedding on Saturday (January 3) began while he and Spears were watching the movie the Texas Chainsaw Massacre in their Palms Casino Hotel room in Las Vegas. He also insisted they were both sober. "We were just chilling in the room, about 3:30, and we had so much fun, just looking out at the city and the lights, and we were, 'We're in Las Vegas, let's do something. Let's go get married,'" Alexander told Inside Edition. He added, the decision to get a quickie annulment was mutual and came to them the very next day.
Alexander said he and Britney remain close, though pals are saying that Alexander is actually hurt that Britney didn't take the marriage seriously. Jared Prescott, described by the New York Post as Alexander's best friend, claims that Alexander, who reputedly had been secretly dating Britney, meant what he said in his marital vows. "No one gets married as a joke, that would be stupid," Prescott told the Post.

Slams Spielberg Over Cuba Trip
Robert Duvall
In a CBS "60 Minutes II" interview set for broadcast on Wednesday, the Oscar-winning actor Robert Duvall sharply criticized filmmaker and DreamWorks SKG studio co-founder Steven Spielberg for visiting Cuba in November 2002.
"Spielberg went down there recently and said, 'The best seven hours I ever spent was actually with Fidel Castro.' Now, what I want to ask him, ... 'Would you consider building a little annex on the Holocaust museum, or at least across the street, to honor the dead Cubans that Castro killed.' That's very presumptuous of him to go there," Duvall told Charlie Rose, according to excerpts of the interview released by CBS.
The actor, who won an Academy Award for his role in the 1983 film "Tender Mercies," added, "I'll never work at DreamWorks again, but I don't care about working there anyway."
Spielberg's spokesman, Marvin Levy, responded by issuing a statement saying the remark Duvall attributed to the director about his meeting with Castro is "totally false."

Charges Doc with Souvenir-Hunting
George Harrison's Estate
The estate of former Beatle George Harrison filed a $10 million law suit on Tuesday against one of the last doctors to treat the late rock musician, claiming he violated patient confidentiality and misused his relationship to procure souvenirs.
The suit filed in Brooklyn Federal Court claimed that Dr. Gilbert Lederman, director of radiation oncology at Staten Island University Hospital, a co-defendant in the suit, had coerced a failing Harrison to autograph his son's guitar and sign autographs for his two daughters.
Court papers say Lederman visited Harrison with his son and daughters and had Harrison listen to his son play the guitar and then placed it in the former Beatle's lap and asked him to autograph it.
When Harrison resisted, the suit claims Lederman reached out to hold his hand to help him write.

Teri Garr
There's a reason we haven't seen much of Teri Garr lately. It's very simple, she says. "My agents have me in the Actors' Protection Program. It seems to be working very well. Nobody can find me."
Ta-dum. That's a funny bit -- one that Garr told on "Larry King Live" and at the Independent Spirit Awards. The real truth is that Garr has multiple sclerosis or something very similar to it -- doctors can't agree -- and hasn't worked much lately.
"The whole MS stuff put the kibosh on my career," she said by phone from her Los Angeles home. "And I sort of let it go. I even have a friend who went to CBS and said, 'I want Teri Garr to be in this series,' and the head of the network said, 'Oh no, she's got MS.'

Reticulated Python
When a recreation park in Indonesia put a huge reticulated python on show last week, keepers insisted to reporters it was 49 feet long. That made it the longest ever caught.
But amid growing skepticism of the claim, a photographer working for Reuters returned to the Curugsewu park in the small central Java town of Kendal Wednesday with a measuring tape. The snake's true length -- around 21 feet
"I have no idea why the snake has shrunk," said one keeper when asked about the discrepancy, as the snake lounged on a tree branch inside its cage.

Retirement Complex
Gay & Gray
Ruthie Berman and Connie Kurtz want a retirement community they can afford, in a place they like, with assisted living if they should need it.
But the two grandmothers want more: a community of like-minded people with whom they feel safe and supported as a lesbian couple.
They have turned to RainbowVision Properties, which plans to break ground by the spring on a complex for the "gay and gray" that will offer condominiums for sale and independent-living and assisted-living apartments for rent.
The complex, which could open in 2005, will include a dining room, community rooms, studios for artists and a rooftop cafe.
