"Woman of Rome: A Life of Elsa Morante" by Lily Tuck: A review by Robert Boyers
Thirty years ago, it seemed that Elsa Morante had established herself as a major literary figure. History: A Novel (1974), which was a best-selling book in Italy, was widely reviewed in the United States when it was published here in 1977; such critics as Alfred Kazin and Stephen Spender debated her merits, and even those who wrote of her with misgiving acknowledged that, at her best, she was a gifted and compelling novelist.

Scholars from around the world are dissecting the Springsteen legend this weekend in New Jersey.
"Glory Days: A Bruce Springsteen Symposium" continues through Sunday at Monmouth University. The no-holds-barred intellectual romp, coinciding with Springsteen's 60th birthday, was organized by Virginia Tech and Penn State Altoona.
And yes, the scholars do get the comedic irony of studying a man who "learned more from a three-minute record than he ever learned from school."
The festivities include several pilgrimages to the landmark Stone Pony nightclub, down the road in Asbury Park, N.J.

The CW network's "The Beautiful Life: TBL" has become the first television series from the new fall crop to be canceled.
The drama starred Mischa Barton and Sara Paxton and was executive produced by Ashton Kutcher. It was set in the glamorous modeling world of New York City.
It premiered Sept. 16 to just 1.5 million viewers. The audience dropped for this week's episode.
In its place on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. Eastern the CW will repeat episodes of its promising new "Melrose Place" revival, one day after their original airing.

It's shake-up time for "Law & Order: Criminal Intent."
Sources from the "L&O" galaxy say that stars Vincent D'Onofrio, Kathryn Erbe and Eric Bogosian are expected to be phased out at various points during the series' upcoming ninth season.
Julianne Nicholson already has departed because she is having a baby. Executive producer Dick Wolf is turning to Jeff Goldblum, who joined the cast last season, to remain as lead detective in the series, along with Saffron Burrows, who was recently cast to replace Nicholson as Goldblum's partner.
Details about D'Onofrio, Erbe and Bogosian's exits are still unclear as the actors' deals are being worked out. It's possible that D'Onofrio will reprise his character in guest stints.
Endangered Ugandan mountain gorillas are appearing online as part of a fundraising program the Ugandan Wildlife Authority launched Saturday to help save the species.
Despite their size - a male silverback can reach over 7 feet (2.1 meters) and weigh 400 pounds (180 kilogram) - the gorillas are threatened by poachers who kill them for meat, farmers and charcoal-burners who encroach on their habitat, and the indiscriminate bullets of rebels on the run. They must be protected by rangers with automatic rifles.
The Wildlife Authority is hoping that fans will befriend a gorilla on Facebook or MySpace or follow it on Twitter in return for a minimum donation of $1. The money will be used to hire extra rangers to protect the gorillas and safeguard their habitat.
In return, gorilla friends will receive regular updates about their chosen gorilla, have their gorilla's picture on their home page and receive gorilla trivia - like the fact that the name is derived from a Greek word, gorillai, meaning "hairy women."
Tellaks, attendants who massage and bathe the customers taking a Turkish bath, wait for them at the historical Galatasaray hamam in Istanbul September 16, 2009. Old Istanbul's bath houses once hosted scheming Pashas and shapely concubines before modern cleansing rituals sent them into decline, but their appeal to tourists and the growth of the spa industry promises a revival.

Major breakthroughs in astronomy aren't only reserved for professional scientists, as proven by a high school student who recently helped discover a new astronomical object.
In March 2009, West Virginia student Lucas Bolyard came across the signature of the object while working on a project that trains students to help analyze astronomical data. He passed the interesting signal on to supervising astronomers, who determined it was probably a rare object known as a rotating radio transient.
These strange neutron stars (extremely dense stars made up almost entirely of the subatomic particles neutrons) emit sporadic bursts of radio waves. There are only about 30 rotating radio transients known.
At the time of the discovery, Bolyard, a sophomore at South Harrison High School in Clarksburg, W. Va., had already waded through more than 2,000 data plots and found nothing. He was sorting through images from the giant Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT) in Green Bank as part of the Pulsar Search Collaboratory, a joint project of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) and West Virginia University, funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation.
Cypress Gardens, which reigned as Florida's grandest theme park in the days before Disney, has shut down while its owners try to sell the attraction.
The 73-year-old park, known for water-skiing shows, lush flower gardens and Southern belles in hoop dresses, was shuttered Wednesday after years of sagging attendance and ownership changes.
The current owner, Land South Adventures, said the park was no longer financially viable. The company said in a statement it "has explored numerous management frameworks and exhausted every possible approach to keep the park running in its traditional form."
Cypress Gardens, once a must-see for Florida visitors, was opened in 1936 by Dick and Julie Pope, and the family sold it in 1985. The property has been bought and sold several times since.
Works by painter Edward Hopper and several early 20th century American contemporaries like Georgia O'Keeffe and Man Ray were put on display at a Dutch museum in Rotterdam on Saturday, in what organisers said was the biggest display ever in Europe of early 20th century American art.
"We chose to exhibit Edward Hopper with his contemporaries so that his work can be shown in better context," said Mariette Maaskant, spokeswoman of the Kunsthal museum.
"Some of the artists were also his friends."
The exhibition will display more than 90 paintings, sketches, sculptures and photographs -- including eight Hopper paintings.
