Ted Rall: Why Are Insurers Blocking H1N1 Treatment Prescriptions?
I got swine flu. Five days later, I was at death's door--because my evil insurance company wouldn't honor my doctor's prescription. Memo to future revolutionaries: if you require a firing squad for the executives of the Health Insurance Plan (HIP) of New York, I'm handy with a rifle.

The president has declined to talk about racism in connection with the carpet-chewers of the right who are suffering road rage over his existence, and he's wise to turn that one down. The country doesn't need a sermon on race or civility right now. What it needs is to believe that our leaders are trying to do the right thing, no matter how inconvenient, and if they forge ahead and fix health insurance, then the ragemeisters of the right will find other hobbies.

Songs that made the hit parade.

It's just called 'Star Trek Main Title' (and that applies to at least 4 different pieces of music).
'Those Were The Days' is the opening to 'All In The Family'.

Conan O'Brien hit his head during a stunt for the "Tonight Show" on Friday and the production was halted, NBC said.
O'Brien was being examined Friday at a hospital. The network declined comment on his condition or whether he had been released.
O'Brien issued a statement through NBC that indicated he was treating the incident lightly.
"Last thing I remember I was enjoying the play with Mrs. Lincoln, and the next thing I knew I was in bed being served cookies and juice" O'Brien said in the statement.
Actor Ken Howard, a proponent of merging two actors unions for better negotiating clout, has been elected president of the Screen Actors Guild, the union said Thursday.
Howard's election - along with that of slate partner Amy Aquino as secretary-treasurer - raises the likelihood that the guild will have tighter coordination with the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists in new contract talks.
Howard won 47 percent of the 27,295 ballots that were returned by about 99,500 dues-paying guild members.
His main rival, Anne-Marie Johnson, received 33 percent of the votes, while Seymour Cassel won 18 percent and Asmar Muhammad trailed with just over 1 percent.

Venezuelan authorities plan to impose fines on cable television companies that refuse to stop airing the animated television series "Family Guy."
Justice Minister Tareck El Aissami says the program should be pulled from the airwaves because it promotes the use of marijuana.

He said Thursday that cable networks that broadcast "Family Guy" would be fined by Venezuela's telecommunications regulator if they refuse to dump the program.

The Marine commander who built the Guantanamo Bay prison said Thursday the U.S. lost the "moral high ground" with its brutal treatment of prisoners, and the facility should be closed as quickly as possible.
It was the first time Maj. Gen. Michael Lehnert publicly acknowledged his doubts, although he said he did make his concerns known through the appropriate chain of command.
Lehnert, 58, was commander of Joint Task Force 160 when it was assigned to build prison cells in 2001 at the U.S. Navy base in Cuba to hold designated "enemy combatants" from Afghanistan and elsewhere.
He said he was given little guidance from the Pentagon, but he did have his staff read the Geneva Convention, the international agreement governing treatment of prisoners.
However, another task force was put in charge of interrogating detainees, and there were disagreements over their treatment, Lehnert said.

Randy Quaid was given a ride from a small West Texas jail to get bail money from a bank after the actor and his wife were arrested for allegedly skipping out on a $10,000 California hotel bill, according to the sheriff who drove him.
Quaid and his wife, Evi, each posted $20,000 Thursday night after spending several hours in the jail in Marfa, Presidio County Sheriff Danny Dominguez told The Associated Press.
Dominguez said he drove the actor to a bank to obtain the bail money. Quaid remained in his custody during the trip but was not handcuffed. The sheriff said the actor received no special treatment.
The Quaids were arrested Thursday afternoon after a deputy spotted the couple driving in Marfa, where they had been staying at a hotel, Dominguez said.

Poland on Friday approved a law making chemical castration mandatory for pedophiles in some cases, sparking criticism from human rights groups.
Under the law, sponsored by Poland's center-right government, pedophiles convicted of raping children under the age of 15 years or a close relative would have to undergo chemical therapy on their release from prison.
"The purpose of this action is to improve the mental health of the convict, to lower his libido and thereby to reduce the risk of another crime being committed by the same person," the government said in a statement.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk said late last year he wanted obligatory castration for pedophiles, whom he branded 'degenerates'. Tusk said he did not believe "one can use the term 'human' for such individuals, such creatures."
Millions of Monarch butterflies migrate to Mexico for the winter and scientists have long speculated on how the insects find their way. Turns out, their antennas are the key.
How do we know? Well, researchers painted butterfly antennas black, and the insects got lost.
Like most animals, Monarchs have a so-called circadian clock in their brain that helps them know what time it is. Knowing the time and the position of the sun allows them to orient to the south.
But Monarch butterflies have a second clock based in their antennas, which also sense light, according to the new study led by Dr. Steven M. Reppert, chairman of neurobiology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
