Jim Hightower: A GREAT BIG TEXAS GOOBER (jimhightower.com)
It seems that Joe [Driver, a Republican state representative from the Dallas area], who regularly rails against big spending liberals and demands stringent cutbacks in our miserly state budget, has for years been routinely billing taxpayers for more than $100,000 in travel expenses that his political fund had already covered - including airline tickets, fancy meals, and luxury out-of-state hotels. He would pay for these costs with campaign funds, then submit the same expenses to the state, and merrily slip the taxpayer reimbursement into his own pocket.

Republicans are seeking to wrest control of the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, and their platform consists of a change in the senior staff? Hello...? Anyone home?
Andrew Tobias: MEHLMAN (andrewtobias.com)
Not only do I remember what it was like being young and struggling, I remember having a suicide plan for when I was outed. I was a banker. By 29, I'd risen to the position of head of lending for a regional set of banks. I always assumed someone would try to blackmail me for a bank loan. I'd planned to gather enough evidence, forward it to the FBI, then commit suicide before facing the loss of love and respect from my family, friends and colleagues. In fact, someone did try blackmailing me. But, instead of asking for a $1,000,000+ loan, they asked for $500. The ridiculousness of it, allowed me to laugh in their face and deal with the perception of demons. -- Texan Eugene Sepulveda
"Muriel Spark: The Biography" by Martin Stannard: A review by Benjamin Taylor
Contemplator of God, party-going sybarite; unpretentious working girl, resplendent queen bee; generous friend, vengeful harpy; hard-nosed businesswoman, self-blinding paranoiac; lofty visionary, litigious terror -- Dame Muriel Sarah Camberg Spark was all of these.
Behold, now, the fearless prognostications of those bold enough to Carpe Diem! (Were that there were more, I'm sayin', but no matter)... Proceed!

Well, then, Poll-fans... There it is... Good Fortune be upon the contestants (Although Joe S. seems to think they're doomed)... We'll see about that, now, won't we? 'Til Tuesday, then, As I always say...

Also, again, ties will be resolved in a scientific manner involving the ever fabulous, Maddie Muffin (Future Nobel AND Pulitzer Prize winner, President of the United States AND General Secretary of the UN amongst other notable achievements to numerous to mention)...
The necktie (or tie) is a long piece of cloth worn for decorative purposes around the neck or shoulders, resting under the shirt collar and knotted at the throat. Variants include the bow tie, ascot tie, bolo tie, and the clip-on tie. The modern necktie, ascot, and bow tie are descended from the cravat.

Alan J was first, and correct, with:
Cravat
Jim from CA, retired to ID, responded:
The modern necktie, ascot, and bow tie are descended from the cravat
Marian the newly retired teacher answered:

Sally said:
The modern necktie (original name was the four-in-hand tie), ascot, and bow tie are descended from the cravat. Cravats were developed from Croatian mercenaries honored by Louis XIV in France during the 17th century. It was not until early 19th century that the cravat achieved the height of fashion in France and England. The French called it 'cravatι,' French for Croat or Croatian. Being Croatian by marriage, I actually knew this!
Here is a likeness entitled, "Dandy With A White Cravatι." Hummmmm, I've always thought of a guy nicknamed a, "dandy" as a cool dude. Somehow, this guy just doesn't cut it with me...
PS: Went downtown with the garden club to weed around the Library this morning. Boy, I could have used some of the genuine stuff (weed) for that dirty job!! (Can you just picture a bunch of old ladies puffing away while pulling the weeds - early in the morning? Not to mention that the Police Station is right around the corner!) Hahaha!
Bill W replied:
modern ties descend from the cravat, which was worn by the men in Croatia, according to my guide at Dubrovnik.
Charlie answered:

MAM wrote:

Croatian Mercenary with a cravat.
And, Joe S responded:
The Cravat
The necktie traces back to the time of Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) when Croatian mercenaries from the Military Frontier in French service, wearing their traditional small, knotted neckerchiefs, aroused the interest of the Parisians. Due to the slight difference between the Croatian word for Croats, Hrvati, and the French word, Croates, the garment gained the name "Cravat". The new article of clothing started a fashion craze in Europe where both men and women wore pieces of fabric around their necks. In the late seventeenth century, the men wore lace cravats that took a large amount of time and effort to arrange. These cravats were often tied in place by cravat strings, arranged neatly and tied in a bow.
In the Mopti region of Mali a group of people, numbering less than a
million, retain a unique cultural and architectural heritage which they
have enjoyed for hundreds of years.
To outsiders their way of life, and certainly their buildings seem odd,
bordering perhaps on the bizarre. Yet for the Dogon, isolated on their
plateau, society and architecture evolved in a unique manner.
My favorite book store, Acres of Books, closed last year, which was pretty depressing. They wholesaled out the remainders, but still had a lot of books left. The owners donated the stock to a local art group, and the art group was selling off what was left today.
Acres of Books was old, and dusty, and wonderfully funky. It's shelves were made from old orange crates, and most of the crates still had their colorful (and often racist by today's standards) signage intact.
The art group charged $25 for an orange crate of your choice, and you got to fill with books..
The kid & I had the best time, wandering the old aisles and being able to pick up anything that looked interesting and put it in the orange crate.
We brought home 67 books (!) - lots of odd stuff - old Hollywood bios, old art books, books I'd never buy (like Hal Lindsay), but was curious about, and some that looked downright peculiar.
The orange crate was over-loaded and so heavy it took both of us to carry it out.
Our wonderful afternoon was courtesy a faithful donor to the e-page, and I'm so very grateful.

A fleeting image of a 'green flash' - an optical phenomenon lasting no more than two seconds - was captured in this photo by Judy Flagg of Irvine.
She shot it Aug. 22 in Laguna Beach, and an expert on green flashes, adjunct professor of astronomy Andrew T. Young at San Diego State University, said he had "no doubt" after examining the picture that it is a genuine green flash.
There are a variety of types of green flash, he said; in Southern California, a common type happens when warm air sits on top of cold air, and when we view the sunset while standing in the warm air and looking down into the cold air.
A toilet belonging to Beatles legend John Lennon sold at auction in Liverpool on Saturday for 9,500 pounds (15,000 dollars, 12,000 euros) -- nearly 10 times its guide price, organisers said.
Lennon used the porcelain lavatory, which is painted with blue flowers and a blue border at the rim and at the base, when he lived at Tittenhurst Park in Berkshire, southeast England, from 1969 to 1972.
The loo was removed when the house was being refurbished, and Lennon suggested the builder, John Hancock, take it home and "put some flowers in it".
Instead, the builder carefully stored it in a garden shed, where it remained for 40 years until he died, and his son-in-law put it up for sale.
The Sex Pistols' latest attempt to get up people's noses comes in the form of their own branded perfume.
Fragrance launches from music stars like Britney Spears, Sean "Diddy" Combs and Avril Lavigne have become commonplace, but it's still an eyebrow-raising move from the legendary punk band, which has been known for making cash from chaos, not from cologne.
The unisex scent, which comes in a tartan-topped bottle featuring the band's "God Save the Queen" imagery, is a collaboration with Paris-based perfume brand Etat Libre d'Orange, which licensed the Sex Pistols name from the band's merchandising partner, Live Nation Merchandise.
Etat Libre launched the perfume in France in mid-July through an exclusive deal with the Sephora chain of beauty shops, which has 150-plus stores across France. It retails for 40 euros ($51). The scent is expected to launch in the United States September 10, initially in the Henri Bendel store in New York.

Khurram Sher, arrested Thursday by Canadian authorities for allegedly being part of an Ottawa terrorist cell, in 2008 crooned on nationwide TV while auditioning for "Canadian Idol."
The YouTube video of the CTV telecast reveals a bearded Sher, who was born and raised in Montreal, telling the "Canadian Idol" judges he came to Canada in "2k5" from Pakistan.
Sher, a doctor trained at McGill University, Canada's top medical school, then proceeded to badly sing Avril Lavigne's "Complicated" while moon-walking and doing the robot dance in traditional Pakistani clothes.
It wasn't complicated for the four "Canadian Idols" judges to pan Sher's performance. "Have you ever thought of being a comedian?" Sass Jordan asked a smirking Sher.
Smoke wafting from a Cadillac Escalade on the Las Vegas Strip set off Paris Hilton's latest legal troubles when a motorcycle officer who suspected the smell was marijuana stopped the vehicle and police say a bag of cocaine later fell out of the 29-year-old socialite's purse.
It's the second time this year Hilton has been arrested on drug possession allegations, although authorities in South Africa dropped marijuana charges earlier this summer. In 2007, Hilton pleaded no contest to alcohol-related reckless driving and was sentenced to 45 days in jail.
This time, the hotel heiress was with her boyfriend, Las Vegas nightclub mogul Cy Waits, who manages a club inside the Wynn Las Vegas and was driving the black SUV that the officer stopped nearby at 11:22 p.m. Friday.
The officer "followed the vapor trail and the odor of marijuana to the Escalade," police Sgt. John Sheahan said.

A Massachusetts man has been arrested after a kilogram of cocaine hidden inside a hollowed-out chunk of bologna was delivered to his home.
Holyoke police say they were tipped off by postal inspectors in Puerto Rico who had been investigating similar shipments. A dog confirmed the presence of drugs and the bologna was cut open.
The meat was then repackaged and an undercover postal inspector delivered it to a Holyoke address at about 4:45 p.m. Thursday. A woman sitting on the front steps signed for it.
Police say the cocaine had a street value of $100,000. The investigation is ongoing.

France's richest woman has cut celebrity photographer Francois-Marie Banier out of her will, depriving him of an estimated 1.25 billion euros, in the latest twist in a family saga that has gripped France and shaken the government.
Liliane Bettencourt is the sole heir of L'Oreal, the global shampoo and beauty products company that her father founded.
Banier has received gifts worth nearly a billion euros from the 87-year-old L'Oreal heiress over the years, sparking accusations from her daughter that he has abused their friendship.
Several judicial investigations are under way into affairs linked to Bettencourt's fortune, including allegations of tax evasion and illegal campaign funding that have implicated French Labour Minister Eric Woerth.

For one month a year, from morning to night, Dilorom Nishanova grows silkworms, a painstaking and exhausting job. She has been doing it since she was 8.
Uzbekistan's authoritarian government insists that it has banned child labor but Nishanova, now 15, hasn't heard about it. She and her siblings, aged 9 to 17, think it's perfectly natural to be helping their father grow silkworms, as well as cotton and wheat.
The silkworm business dates back centuries to the Silk Road that ran through this Central Asian country. Kokand, the town in the fertile Ferghana Valley where Dilorom's family farms, is also the Uzbek word for "cocoon." Kokand was the destination of the first westbound Chinese caravan carrying silk in 121 B.C. that started the fabled trade route.
But its modern-day incarnation as a state monopoly has a dark side. Farmers say they are threatened with fines or loss of their land leases for missing quotas, and these quotas are so high that they have no choice but to draft their children into the work.

A Southern California horse dealer has reached a plea deal after being accused of selling animals that were sick, drugged and sometimes painted a different color, federal prosecutors said Friday.
Trina Lee Kenney, of Wrightwood, agreed to plead guilty to one felony count of mail fraud, said assistant U.S. attorney Joseph Akrotirianakis. Prosecutors allege Kenney tricked one customer by drugging a horse to make it appear calm and painted at least two others to match the color she advertised. She also was accused of accepting money for horses that customers never received and may not have ever existed.
Sixty-one known victims were found in 23 states - from Washington state to West Virginia - and in Canada, Akrotirianakis said.
Kenney sold horses online. She used a variety of websites to place her ads and used at least 14 aliases, the plea agreement said. The 32-year-old kept changing her name and websites to avoid getting caught.
This image provided by the Los Angeles Zoo shows one of the 22 Komodo dragons that were born at the zoo over an 11 day period beginning Aug. 8, 2010 in Los Angeles. Komodos, the worlds largest dragons, are cannibalistic and usually eat their young and eggs of their own species, so zoo officials say staying alive is tricky for a hatchling. Los Angeles is one of the few zoos in North America to have successfully bred Komodos. The curator says 11 babies will eventually go to the Columbus (Ohio) Zoo.
