Paul Krugman: This Is Not a Recovery (nytimes.com)
Policy makers keep telling us the economy is continuing to recover. Unfortunately, that's not true, and they should be doing everything to change that fact.
Froma Harrop: The Mosque and the 'American Street' (creators.com)
The circus around the mosque should start to lose audience. New York officials have the authority to decide whether an Islamic center may be built near the tragic site of the attacks on the Twin Towers. They've given it a green light.

The two gangs of economists warring over the causes of high unemployment.
Jim Hightower: THE EXPLETIVES OF WALL STREET
Wall Street is a bizarre place. It masquerades as a sober center of finance, but it operates as a wide-open bazaar of anything-goes gambling games.

Jim Hightower: AN INSIDE JOB BY BIG BANKS
Congress finally passed a moderate reform package to tighten regulations on the banksters of Wall Street. Of course, the banksters howled, protesting even the meekest of reforms - but the package is now the law, so that's that. Right? Uh... no.
Aida Edemariam: Who still wants to learn languages? (guardian.co.uk)
The new GCSE results show foreign languages are in severe decline - with the number of children learning French and German falling most dramatically of all. Aida Edemariam asks what this means for our universities, our economy, and the future of Britain.
Roger Ebert's Journal: I Was a Teenage Newshound
My first professional newspaper job was on The News-Gazette in my home town of Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. I was 15. The pay was 75 cents a hour, eventually climbing even higher. I was not an intern. That was a salary. I was a sports writer, graduating to general assignment in the summer, and I pumped out reams of copy. I recall a special section commemorating the opening of a bowling alley, for which I wrote at least 15 stories, all with my proud byline; I even interviewed a pin-spotter and the owner of a shoe rental franchise.

For a nation that supposedly has forsaken stocks, we're still shoveling a lot of cash in that direction.
"Common as Air" By LEWIS HYDE: Reviewed by Ward Sutton (barnesandnoble.com)
With his newest book, 'Common as Air,' Hyde has returned to offer a critique of the idea that all creative work is "intellectual property" and to elucidate and defend our "cultural commons."
"Strange Days Indeed: The 1970s: The Golden Days of Paranoia" by Francis Wheen: A review by Michael Moynihan
The 1970s -- with its flared jeans and dodgy haircuts, pallid disco music, absurdist trends (pet rocks!), and Khomeinist revolution -- what a miserable, squalid decade it was. The idealism and irrational optimism of the 1960s, when throngs of teenagers declared the end of bourgeois society, gave way to Cambodia, Watergate, Jonestown, and the Symbionese Liberation Army. Civil rights marchers and peaceniks made way for black power and Black September.
"Super Sad True Love Story" by Gary Shteyngart: A review by Rayyan Al-Shawaf
"Oh, dear diary. My youth has passed, but the wisdom of age hardly beckons. Why is it so hard to be a grown-up man in this world?" Bemoaning his fate thus is 39-year-old lovable loser Lenny Abramov, the bookish and neurotic Russian-Jewish-American protagonist of Gary Shteyngart's feverish, boisterous, wildly funny yet also contrived and histrionic new novel: Super Sad True Love Story.

Quits 'Sister Act'
Whoopi Goldberg
Whoopi Goldberg has left the London production of "Sister Act" to fly back to the U.S. after her mother had a stroke.
Goldberg was due to appear as the Mother Superior in the convent-set musical until the end of the month.
Producers say the 54-year-old star flew home Friday after learning of her mother Emma's illness. They said "the thoughts and sincere best wishes of the producers and the entire 'Sister Act' company are with her at this difficult time."
Goldberg is a producer of the stage version of her hit 1992 movie about an on-the-lam singer who hides out among a group of nuns. It is due to open on Broadway next year.

Named Pasadena Pops Conductor
Marvin Hamlisch
The Pasadena Pops says award-winning composer Marvin Hamlisch will be its principal conductor next summer.
Pops executive Paul Jan Zdunek says Hamlisch will lead four Rose Bowl concerts between June 18 and Aug. 27.
The 65-year-old entertainer has won three Oscars, four Grammys, four Emmys, a Tony and three Golden Globes. He also won a Pulitzer Prize for his show "A Chorus Line."
Hamlisch is also known for "They're Playing Our Song" and wrote the film scores for "The Way We Were," "The Sting" and "Sophie's Choice."

Pulls Plug On Show
Cristina Saralegui
The television talk show host known as the Spanish Oprah is calling it quits, just like her namesake.
The Univision network said Thursday "El Show de Cristina" will end after 20 years in November.
The Cristina Saralegui show has featured the Latino community's biggest stars and does topical programs. That's much like Oprah Winfrey's show, which is ending next year after 25 seasons.
"Cristina" had been a daily program but recently became a weekly show on Univision, the nation's top-rated Spanish-language network. Univision says Saralegui will host specials for it in the future.

Being Dubbed In Spanish
Sofia Vergara
Emmy nominee and Colombia native Sofia Vergara has no idea why someone else was hired to dub her character on "Modern Family" for the show's Latin American edition.
"Friends and family called to tell me, 'We really don't like it. We know it's not you -- and that woman sounds horrible,' "Vergara says, laughing.
She still doesn't know who the mysterious vocal artist is -- and nor does The Hollywood Reporter, as 20th Century Fox Television didn't return calls.
But this isn't the first time the company has had issues with dubbing. In 2005, unionized voice actors in Mexico for "The Simpsons" ("Los Simpson") were replaced with nonunion talent for the show's 16th season, following a labor dispute. When Fox failed to intervene, angry fans signed a petition demanding the original voices be reinstated.

Judge Grants Restraining Order
Leonardo DiCaprio
Leonardo DiCaprio has been granted a temporary restraining against a woman he said claims to be his wife and carrying his baby.
Court records show Superior Court Judge Carol Boas Goodson granted the order Wednesday against Livia Bistriceanu, 41, of Chicago.
DiCaprio's request included statements from the actor and his security team claiming Bistriceanu had traveled from Chicago to Los Angeles at least twice to try to meet DiCaprio at his home and business office. She refused to leave the properties and acted aggressively, the court filings state.
DiCaprio said he has never met Bistriceanu, but she has sent him numerous handwritten letters. Some were attached to his request for the restraining order and reviewed by the judge.

Another Ice Island Breaks Off
Ward Hunt Ice Shelf
Sometime earlier this month, a Bermuda-sized ice island broke free from the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf along the northern coast of Canada's Ellesmere Island.
The breakup on this ice shelf continued a years-long pattern of retreat on the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf, and a decades-long pattern of retreat of the ice shelves along the Ellesmere coast in the high Arctic.
NASA's Aqua satellite detected fractures on the shelf on Aug. 18. Compared to images of the ice shelf from eight years earlier, the fractures show the dramatic change to the coast.
The fractures on the shelf in 2010 are immediately south and east of Ward Hunt Island, and a large chunk of ice appears to be floating free from the shelf immediately east-northeast of the island. Although the ice shelf appears larger west-northwest of Ward Hunt Island in 2010, the larger area of ice is due to sea ice temporarily attached and frozen to the ice shelf. South of the ice shelf, fjords that are covered with ice in 2002 are largely free of ice in 2010.

Another Record For Disney
`Toy Story 3'
"Toy Story 3" is about to set another box office record for The Walt Disney Co.
The company says the third movie in the Pixar series will pass $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales today (Friday).
Counted with "Alice in Wonderland," it will be the second movie to pass the billion-dollar mark for Disney this year.
It also will make The Walt Disney Studios the only studio in history to have released two billion-dollar-plus movies in a single year.

Emmy Missing
Estelle Getty
The statuette the late actress won in 1988 for "The Golden Girls" has vanished, leaving a bigger mess than the inside of Sophia Petrillo's handbag.
After Getty died in 2008, sons Carl and Barry Gettleman failed to agree on how to divvy up their mom's possessions. So they chose to auction them through Bonhams & Butterfields.
On June 14, 2009, less than a year after the actress' death, her Emmy was sold for $7,320 to an unknown buyer.
Then two months later, it suddenly popped up on eBay, with a suggested opening bid of $15,000.
At this point the TV Academy, which had failed to intervene before the auction, tried to encourage the unknown seller to remove it, pointing out a 30-year-old mandate that Emmys belong to the TV Academy.

Dueling Demonstrations
Strippers Vs. Fundies
Strippers dressed in bikinis sunbathe in lawn chairs, their backs turned toward the gray clapboard church where men in ties and women in full-length skirts flock to Sunday morning services.
The strippers, fueled by Cheetos and nicotine, are protesting a fundamentalist Christian church whose Bible-brandishing congregants have picketed the club where they work. The dancers roll up with signs carrying messages adapted from Scripture, such as "Do unto others as you would have done unto you," to counter church members who for four years have photographed license plates of patrons and asked them if their mothers and wives know their whereabouts.
The dueling demonstrations play out in central Ohio, where nine miles of cornfields and Amish-buggy crossing signs separate The Fox Hole strip club from New Beginnings Ministries.
Club owner Tommy George met with the preacher and offered to call off his not-quite-nude crew from their three-month-long protest if the church responds in kind. But pastor Bill Dunfee believes that a higher power has tasked him with shutting down the strip club.
