Republicans Try To Manipulate Another Election
California
It was only an "unloaded . . . little, teeny pistol," Congressman Darrell Issa (R-Somewhere south of San Onofre) told the Los Angeles Times earlier this month, hoping to explain away a 1972 weapons conviction.
The gun incident happened not long after Issa, in 1982, seized control of the company that launched his success in the hard-nosed car-alarm business by taking advantage of an Ohio law allowing a creditor to win judgment against a debtor without the debtor's presence or knowledge.
Issa used to tell the story of how, as a young soldier, he was part of a security unit protecting President Nixon at the 1971 World Series. As a story, it's got everything—Issa looking brave in uniform, baseball, Nixon—and it's a story Issa clearly enjoyed telling, because it shows up in his press clips as far back as 1990. But you won't be hearing it this year. In 1998, when Issa was running for the U.S. Senate, the San Francisco Examiner ruined this perfectly good story by calling the Nixon Library in Yorba Linda. The library's records reveal that Nixon never attended the 1971 World Series.

Book Sales Cover Advance
'Living History'
The publisher of Sen. Hillary Clinton's memoir said the book's brisk sales would likely cover the former first lady's $8 million advance.
Carolyn Reidy, the president of adult books at Simon and Schuster, said reports from bookstores indicate that the book has sold at least 1.2 million copies, close to the 1.35 million copies that would cover the advance with hardcover sales alone, The New York Times reported Saturday.
"Living History" was released on June 9. The publisher ordered 1 million copies for the first printing, an extraordinarily high number for a nonfiction book.
Reidy said Clinton could likely expect royalties from foreign sales and paperback sales in the United States.

Gore Vidal
You might think that Gore Vidal, the novelist, playwright, essayist, congressional candidate, TV personality and all-around American gadfly, would be mellowing at age 77.
The tireless iconoclast, who published his first novel at 20 and has written 25 more, remains as feisty and prolific as ever.
His latest book is a paperback "pamphlet" called "Dreaming War: Blood for Oil and the Cheney-Bush Junta." And he's busy on another, "The Founding Fathers," in which he will claim that the leaders of the American Revolution were not as saintly as schoolbooks would have us believe.
He's also the subject of an American Masters special, "The Education of Gore Vidal," which appears on PBS July 30 (10 p.m. ET). The hour-long show features a healthy dose of Vidal talking about himself, as well as comments by Arthur Schlesinger Jr., George Plimpton and others. There are also readings of Vidal's works by longtime chums Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Eli Wallach, Anne Jackson, Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon.
For some great quotes and a fun read, Gore Vidal

Rome To Pay Homage
Federico Fellini
Rome will pay homage to Federico Fellini this fall — the 10th anniversary of his death — with exhibits, photo shows, concerts and screenings of clips from his movies.
"Romarcord" — named after Fellini's Oscar-winning "Amarcord" — will explore the director's relationship with the capital, where he lived for many years and set some of his classics, including 1960's "La Dolce Vita."
The tribute will begin in late September with a series of giant pictures displayed at some of Rome's sites that were significant to him, officials said this week.
Events also will include an exhibit with pictures, letters and sketches by Fellini, plus costumes and screenings of interviews and film clips; a concert featuring soundtracks from his films; and "Fellini Jazz," at the end of October, that will offer a jazz version of his soundtracks.

Spencer Tracy's Kin Mark Movie Anniversary
'Boys Town'
The family of the late actor Spencer Tracy helped a home for troubled youth celebrate the 65th anniversary of the movie that made it famous.
Tracy, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of the Rev. Edward Flanagan in the 1938 movie "Boys Town," was inducted Friday into the Girls and Boys Town Wall of Fame. Five members of the Tracy family were on hand for the ceremony.
"Father Flanagan was one of his real heroes," said Joe Tracy, a grandson of the actor. Flanagan founded the home just west of Omaha in 1917, and Tracy gave his Oscar statuette to Flanagan.

Parties in the Park
Britain's Gay Community
Joined by gay policemen, tens of thousands of partygoers marched and danced in central London on Saturday for what organizers billed as Europe's biggest homosexual, bisexual and transgender festival.
After an initial march, some 60,000 people defied gray skies and drizzle to gather in Hyde Park for an event intended to rival other international street parties such as Berlin's "Love Parade," organizers said.
Police estimates of numbers were not much lower than organizers, and officers in charge of patrolling the event said it was a success with no disorder.
"As far as I'm aware everything is hunky dory, especially hunky," one police spokesman said.

Separated
Minnelli - Gest
Sixteen months after their lavish, star-studded New York wedding, singer-actress Liza Minnelli and her fourth husband, producer David Gest, have separated, her spokesman said on Friday.
Word that the celebrity couple had split came four months after they called off plans for a splashy wedding anniversary party, citing the looming war with Iraq, and Minnelli's subsequent admission into a rehab program.
A report on the Web site Newsday.com quoted an unidentified source close to the couple as saying Gest, 49, was staying in Hawaii, while Minnelli, 57, daughter of the late Judy Garland, remained in her Manhattan apartment.
Reached by telephone late Friday, Minnelli's publicist, Warren Cowan, said only, "I can confirm that they're separated, but that's all I know."

San Quentin Artist
Alfredo Santos
For half a century, inmates, guards and a few visitors have stood entranced by an artistic jewel hidden in the heart of San Quentin State Prison - a series of murals that captures the history of California in a sweeping panoply too big to be confined by bars.
On Saturday the artist responsible, Alfredo Santos, looked at his work for the first time as a free man.
"I never thought I'd see them again," said Santos. "I never told anyone."
Santos went to prison as a young man in 1951 for selling heroin - he was busted first time out, he says - and served four years. He started painting the murals in 1953 at the request of prison officials who were looking to decorate some new walls put up when the old dining hall was divided into sections.
Santos worked on the murals for two years, standing on scaffolding that was pushed around by a couple of other inmates.
For a good read, Alfredo Santos
Really Is A Cat
Cat Burglar
A marauding feline named Midnight — now dubbed Klepto Cat — has been sneaking off in the dark to raid neighbors' homes, garages, sheds and patios, bringing home shoes, hats, shirts, socks and even a wrapped Christmas present.
It's stressful for pet owners Richard and Sue Boyd.
Each day, Midnight's owners leave a bag with the purloined goods hanging from their mailbox so neighbors can reclaim missing items.
Gary Sampson, an Indianapolis-based veterinarian who specializes in cat behavior, said the 13-year-old cat is probably drawn to body odors.
"He's obviously a hunter," Sampson said. "He's doing this at night. This is when they can get prey. It's just an extension of that."

Newly Released Bird Dies
California Condor
A young California condor recently released into the wild was found dead at Hopper Mountain National Wildlife Refuge, biologists said.
The death of the year-old male bird last weekend follows a string of fatalities of both adults and chicks over the last year. A trio of condor chicks hatched in the wild for the first time in nearly two decades were killed last year.
Biologists said the latest death occurred the evening of July 19. The bird was probably killed by a coyote because a necropsy revealed the bird had puncture wounds, fractures and tissue damage, officials said.
As of July 1, there were 141 California condors in captivity and another 81 in the wild, Stockton said. California has 40 in the wild, Arizona has 36 and five are located in Baja California.
