Essential DVDs
I'd like to try something a little different today. This is a list of my
essential DVDs, the ones I must have if dropped into a barren wasteland.
You know like a meeting of really compassionate conservitives. The list is
in no real order, so you can't call it a ratings list.
1. The Great Escape (1963) - I bet the theme pooped into your head when you read this. A triumph of man vs the system.
2. The Magnificent Seven (1960) - This gets the nod over The Seven Samurai because it's in english( so I'm provincial, sue me) and what a cast.
3. Lawrence of Arabia (1962) - A true epic best scene in the widescreen format
4. The General (1927) - IMHO Keaton's best, the forerunner of every roadrunner cartoon ever made
5. Duck Soup (1933) - Groucho runs a country better than Bush, Harpo and Chico are spys. Heavens above, its almost a documentary
6. Star Wars (1977) - The film that legitimized sci fi. The only one of the series that can stand alone.
7. Singin' in the Rain (1952) - I admit a sneaking fondness for this film. Singin' in the Rain is the most optimistic and in some ways the most defiant song ever. So what if its raining and depressing, I FEEL GOOD.
8. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) - Another epic, a vision of what film can be when given the chance.
9. Ben Hur - Either version (Ben Hur (1907) or Ben-Hur (1959)) as both are excellent adaptations of a deep spiritual novel.
10. Psycho (1960) - Hitchcock, murder and a tour de force performance by Anthony Perkins and all shot tastefully in black and white.
There are other great movies but I think these are the ones that could be show to any ET to demonstrate what film is. Personally I have a list of 100 films I want on DVD but I know I'll buy these first.

Tops $8M in First Day
'Fahrenheit 9/11'
"Fahrenheit 9/11," Michael Moore's assault on resident Bush, took in $8.2 million to $8.4 million in its first day, positioning it as the weekend's No. 1 film, its distributors said Saturday.
Based on Friday's numbers, "Fahrenheit 9/11" was on track for an opening weekend that would surpass the $21.6 million total gross of Moore's "Bowling for Columbine," his 2002 film that earned him an Academy Award for best documentary.
Friday grosses for "Fahrenheit 9/11" ran about $1.5 million ahead of its closest competitor, the Wayans brothers comedy "White Chicks." The performance of "Fahrenheit 9/11" was even more remarkable considering it played in just 868 theaters, fewer than a third the number for "White Chicks."

Protesters Invoke Shakespeare
Ireland
Irish protesters have used Shakespeare to blitz George W. Bush, invoking Macbeth, a ghost and a witch to cast a spell on the U.S. resident and drive him, symbolically at least, from Irish soil.
Some 500 demonstrators marched on Dromoland Castle, the 16th century turreted mansion in western Ireland where Bush was meeting European Union leaders for a summit.
The protesters held up a banner adorned with a quote from Macbeth, Shakespeare's powerful drama of death, destruction and ambition in feudal Scotland.
"There's the smell of blood still," read the banner, on which was painted a gory hand. "All the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand."

Honors
American University of Beirut
ABC News anchor Peter Jennings and cellist Yo-Yo Ma picked up honorary doctoral degrees Saturday at the American University of Beirut and paid tribute to the school as a place for cultural understanding.
The university, founded in 1866, has been a meeting point of ideas and people from the Middle East and West for more than a century.
Jennings, the Toronto-born son of a Canadian radio announcer, dropped out of high school before launching his career in journalism. He also served as ABC News bureau chief in Beirut for seven years.

London
Olympic Torch Run
The Olympic torch traveled through London on a rainy Saturday, with Roger Banister hoisting the flame at Wimbledon to mark the start of a relay that ended with a concert near Buckingham Palace.
Tens of thousands packed The Mall near Buckingham Palace at the finish. Five-time Olympic rowing gold medalist Steve Redgrave used the flame to light a ceremonial cauldron on a stage where James Brown, Rod Stewart, Ozzy Osbourne and other stars performed.
The British Broadcasting Corp. estimated that about 80,000 people lined The Mall to watch Redgrave end the 30-mile relay.

Recalls Being Axed From 'West Wing'
John Amos
Former "West Wing" actor John Amos says he was reading the newspaper and eating a breakfast burrito when he was told directors planned to kill off his character to "create a cliffhanger."
Amos, who played Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Adm. Percy Fitzwallace, said there was no ceremony to end his five-year stint on the popular TV show.
Instead a director approached him and said, "'Hey John, how's the burrito? Oh, hey, did I tell you we're killing Fitzwallace?' It was just like that," Amos said in Saturday's editions of The (Nashville) Tennessean.

Battle Over Estate
Jimi Hendrix
A court battle over the estate of Jimi Hendrix opens Monday in Seattle, Washington, with his brother Leon charging he has been denied his share of the family fortune amassed from merchandising the legacy of the rock legend, who died in 1970.
The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported Saturday that Leon Hendrix, 56, born six years after Jimi, charged that his stepsister Janie, 43, who co-manages the family business, cut him out of the will, of which their father was the sole beneficiary.
At stake is a fortune of some 80 million dollars that reportedly generates annual sales of several million dollars.

Wins Court Order on Film
Imelda Marcos
Imelda Marcos, who became a symbol of the extravagance of dictatorship with her enormous shoe collection, petitioned the Makati Regional Trial Court to ban "Imelda." She argued that she'd approved the film only as a college thesis project.
A 20-day restraining order was issued Thursday by Judge Maria Cristina Cornejo. "Imelda" had been set to open in theaters in the Philippines on July 7.
The documentary, directed by Ramona S. Diaz, won the cinematography award at this year's Sundance Film Festival.

Soundtrack Customized for Regions
'Spider-Man'
In what Sony Entertainment is calling the most ambitious global marketing plan ever for a soundtrack, Sony is releasing as many as 11 versions of the soundtrack internationally. One of the chief goals is to break select Sony artists on the album in multiple markets.
In the United States, Columbia Records/Sony Music Soundtrax released the 15-song "Spider-Man 2" compilation soundtrack June 22. Dashboard Confessional's "Vindicated" and Train's "Ordinary" are the co-lead singles from the U.S. and Canadian versions of the album; both are also being worked in select international markets.
Additional songs from Sony Music artists appear on the soundtrack's international versions. In Europe, tracks by U.S. act Switchfoot and Sweden's Ana Johnnson are being worked as singles in most markets.

Pays Homage to Tradition
Tiny Circus
The teeny display at The Barnum Museum tells a feel-good story of old circus days, when clowns and trapeze girls had the power to draw crowds to the street, and even close school early for a makeshift holiday.
"When I was a kid you looked forward to circus day, like you would Christmas or your birthday," said William R. Brinley, 86, of Meriden. "It was a big deal."
A circus fan ever since his first Christy Bros. show in 1926, Brinley has designed a miniature circus that features more than 5,000 carved figures and circus equipment. It spans 1,100 square feet, a world in which 3/4-inch equals 1 foot.
