Re: Reagathon
The only good thing about the god awful coverage of Reagan was the fact that
I missed it all.
Just stayed away from the "news" all week and did other things.
It was rather refreshing.
The biggest problem was arguing with Reagan sycophants who thought the sun
shone out of his rear and who absolutely refuse to hear anything bad (i.e. the truth) even when
sources are cited URLs are pointed to and history is explained.
There seems to be a denial of reality in this country of an appalling scale

He should do a 'Uncaptured Criminals Show' with OJ Simpson. He's got the same fried-on 'Guilty Forever' look.
They're stuck in the wax museum of the convicted-but-not-otherwise-punished, where in fact Robot Reagan spent his rotting years.

Official Portrait to Be Unveiled Monday
Bill Clinton
Simmie Knox, the first black artist to paint an official presidential portrait, is preparing to unveil his oil painting of former President Bill Clinton in a ceremony Monday at the White House.
"My mind hasn't completely wrapped around it yet," Knox said in a telephone interview from his Silver Spring, Md., home. "Just imagine: I was born in 1935 in Aliceville, Alabama, a sharecropper, and now I'm painting the president. Can you imagine that?"
The self-taught artist, best known for his portraits of black celebrities like baseball legend Hank Aaron and comedian Bill Cosby, also will unveil a painting of the former first lady, New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Lights Olympic Flame
Nelson Mandela
Former president Nelson Mandela lit the Olympic torch on Robben Island where he was imprisoned for opposing apartheid as South Africa for the first time took part in the global relay of the flame.
The Olympic torch arrived in Cape Town from Cairo, the only two African cities to welcome the flame on its world tour through 34 cities ahead of the official opening of the Games in Athens on August 13.
Mandela, who turns 86 next month, was among the 120 South Africans who took part in the torch relay in Cape Town.

Swims With Dolphin's Kin
'Flipper' Cast
Forty years after the TV series "Flipper" hit the air waves, former cast members took a swim with the descendants of the famous dolphin.
The reunion was part of 40th anniversary celebrations that include the debut of a new Miami Seaquarium dolphin show set to music from the series.
Luke Halpin and Tom Norden, who played Sandy and Bud on the series which ran from 1964 to 1967, donned wet suits and posed for pictures with the dolphins.
The five dolphins who were captured from Biscayne Bay to play Flipper have since died, but two of their descendants - Sundance and Echo - still live at the Seaquarium.

Auction Raises $5.8 Million
Hepburn Estate
A two-day auction of property belonging to actress Katharine Hepburn brought in an unexpected $5.8 million, with many items selling for far above the estimated price, Sotheby's said on Friday.
The most sought after piece and the most expensive item was a bronze bust of Spencer Tracy that Hepburn created in the 1960s. The audience cheered when the 3-inch (7.5 cm) sculpture sold for $316,000, compared to an estimate of $3,000-$5,000.
The daughter of a Connecticut doctor and a mother who fought for women's rights, Hepburn's acting career spanned seven decades, from 1932 to 1994.

Vietnam 'Peace' Concert
An international concert to promote peace and highlight U.N. anti-poverty goals that would have been the biggest musical event ever in Vietnam has been canceled with just 10 days to go, organizers said on Saturday.
Lionel Ritchie, Gloria Gaynor and Peter Yarrow of 1960s group Peter, Paul and Mary were among those set to entertain 45,000 at Vietnam's national stadium on June 22 until organizers said "insurmountable circumstances" had forced them to cancel.

Dancers from Lei Hulu Hula Studio perform in front of the newly decorated King Kamehameha statue, outside the Honolulu Civic Center covered with 13-foot leis of fresh plumeria, ginger, Ilima, Maile leaves and other local tropical flowers on June 11, 2004 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Volunteers strung thousands of fresh and dried flowers to honor their past king. This official holiday was established in 1871 by King Kamehameha V to honor his grandfather, Kamehameha I. Kamehameha I, also known as Kamehameha the Great or Pai'ea Kamehameha, was born in North Kohala on the island of Hawaii, sometime between 1748 and 1761. King Kamehameha the Great united the Hawaiian islands in 1810 and he died in 1819.

Delivered to First User
Revived Zeppelin
Makers of the revived Zeppelin airship delivered their first helium-filled craft to a commercial user Saturday, a Japanese company that plans to use the 12-seat craft for sightseeing trips and advertising.
The granddaughter of the original airship's inventor, Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, was on hand as Japan's Nippon Airship Corporation took delivery of the 247-foot ship, destined for sightseeing and advertising flights in Japan and a starring role at the 2005 world's fair in the city of Aichi.
The new craft designed by Germany's Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik - named Zeppelin NT for "New Technology" - is filled with helium rather than the intensely flammable hydrogen that fueled the earlier generation of airships.
On Sunday, the cigar-shaped craft - with "Germany in Japan" painted in large black letters on its side - is to take off on its journey to Japan, where it should arrive by mid-August.

Russian Museum Feature
Mad Monk's Member
In a more innocent age, it was said that Gregory Efimovich Rasputin's legendary power over women was due to his piercing eyes.
But a new museum of erotica here suggests that the mad monk's charm may instead have been, ahem, concealed beneath his cassock.
Measuring 28.5 centimeters (about 11 inches) -- allowing for shrinkage caused by pickling -- Rasputin's penis displayed in a tall glass bottle is, to put it delicately, a big attraction at the museum.
Director Igor Knyazkin said he bought the object from a French antiquitarian for 8,000 dollars (6,600 euros), along with several of Rasputin's hand-written letters.
For the rest, Mad Monk's Member

Farm Opens To Public
Andrew Wyeth
The view from inside the barn illustrated in Andrew Wyeth's Spring Fed remains the same: a metal bucket hangs over a stone trough brimming with cold water, the barnyard and Kuerner Hill visible through a lone window.
Wyeth grew up about a kilometre from this farm owned by Karl and Anna Kuerner, German immigrants in Delaware County's rural Brandywine Valley. He has documented Kuerner Farm's people, animals and fields in more than 1,000 works of art.
Guides from the nearby Brandywine River Museum now walk visitors through this major source of Wyeth's artistic inspiration. The Kuerner family donated the farmhouse, barn and 13 hectares of fields to the Brandywine Conservancy, the museum's parent organization. Tours began in April and continue through Nov. 21.

In Memory
Barbara Whiting Smith
Barbara Whiting Smith, an actress who performed in films in the 1940s and 1950s including Carnival in Costa Rica, Beware, My Lovely and Dangerous When Wet, has died. She was 73.
Smith, of Bloomfield Village, died of cancer Wednesday. She was the sister of singer Margaret Whiting and the daughter of composer Richard Whiting, who wrote hundreds of songs, including Hooray for Hollywood.
Born in Los Angeles, she got her break in movies when she was 13. She played the role of Fuffy Adams opposite Peggy Ann Garner in the 1945 film Junior Miss. Following the performance, 20th Century Fox signed her to a contract.
She also performed in a Junior Miss radio series, and starred with her sister in Those Whiting Girls, a TV show that ran for two years.
Then she married Gail Smith, and in 1959 they moved to Michigan. She retired from acting and became a long-time volunteer at and patron of St. Joseph Mercy Oakland hospital in Pontiac, where she died, more than a decade after her husband.
