Reader Question
Re: Faith & Funding
Hey Marty,
Is there anyone out there keeping track of how much of the "faith based" money going to the Moonies, Pat Robinson, Fallwell, etc.?
It might be information that some of the Moral Minority would find distasteful.

Auction This Weekend
Barbra Streisand
Collectors took advantage of a rare opportunity Saturday when singer and actress Barbra Streisand put hundreds of items from her films and personal life on auction to benefit several charities.
The collection includes everything from gowns Streisand designed and wore in movies and concert appearances to her prescription eyeglasses and customized 1986 Ford mobile home van.
"I'm just here to get as many beautiful things as I can get," said Kathryn Philpott-Hill, a dentist who traveled from North Carolina to attend the auction.
Helping Streisand's charity was also important, Philpott-Hill said. "It's her politics I'm supporting here."
The proceeds will go to the Streisand Foundation, which helps promote civil liberties, democratic values, women's issues, AIDS research and other causes.

Lumberjacks, Knights Audition for Film
'Gin and Tonic'
Knights, monsters, and cross-dressing lumberjacks lined up near New York's Times Square on Saturday, hoping to win roles in an upcoming movie about the life of Monty Python comedian Graham Chapman.
About 1,000 actors and fans donned costumes to audition for the film "Gin and Tonic," about the life of Chapman, who died of throat cancer in 1989, said writer and director David Eric Brenner.
"Gin and Tonic," depicting Chapman's humor, hard-drinking and brief career as a doctor, starts filming later this year in London, Brenner said.

Wedding News
Lopez - Anthony
Jennifer Lopez reportedly married Marc Anthony in a small ceremony at her home on Saturday, less than six months after she ended her high-profile engagement to Ben Affleck.
Both Us Weekly and People magazines reported the nuptials.
For Lopez, 33, the marriage would mark her third - the first was to waiter Ojani Noa in 1997, the second to dancer Cris Judd in 2001. Noa lasted a little more than a year; Judd for nine months.
Anthony, the Latin singing sensation, just divorced former Miss Universe Dayanara Torres last week in the Dominican Republic. The pair, wed in 2000, have two young sons, and he has a daughter from a previous relationship.
Thanks, Marian!

Seeks Annulment
Verne Troyer
A hearing in the annulment proceedings brought by Verne Troyer, who stands just 32 inches tall, is set for June 17, his attorney said on Friday.
Silberberg said his client filed papers Feb. 23 seeking to annul Genevieve Gallen's marriage claims, which he said were fabricated and financially motivated.
Neither Gallen, 31, whose real last name is Gowman, nor a representative could immediately be reached for comment.
She and Troyer, 35, both natives of Michigan, were widely reported last summer to have become engaged, with some gossip accounts saying they later broke off their relationship.

Plaque in Romania Unveiled
Johnny Weissmuller
A plaque in memory of the late Johnny Weissmuller, an American acting and swimming legend who played the famous lord of the apes in the 1930s and 1940s, was unveiled Saturday by his son in this city where Weissmuller was born 100 years ago.
The actor's son, John Scott Weissmuller, 63, presented the plaque, which reads: "This is the house where the Olympic swimming champion and great actor Johnny Weissmuller was born on June 2, 1904."
Few people know that Weissmuller, best known for his role as Tarzan, was born in Timisoara, 500 kilometres northwest of the capital, Bucharest.
Weissmuller had claimed he was born in Windber, Pa., - an assertion his son has said might have been made to ensure a place on the U.S. Olympic swimming team.

Jail Warden Cleared in Theft
Salvador Dali Sketch
A former assistant deputy warden at a New York City jail complex has been acquitted of charges that he masterminded the theft of a $250,000 Salvador Dali sketch.
A jury acquitted Benny Nuzzo, 51, on Friday after a monthlong trial. Nuzzo had denied any role in the theft of the sketch, which was reported missing from Rikers Island in March 2003.
Three other men, two correction officers and an assistant deputy warden, were also charged. One has pleaded guilty to attempted grand larceny.
Dali created the ink and pencil sketch, which depicts the crucifixion of Jesus, after an illness caused him to cancel a planned visit to the prison in 1965. The sketch has not been located.

In Memory
Irene Manning
Irene Manning, the beautiful, classically trained singer who appeared in some of the biggest musicals of the 1940s, including Yankee Doodle Dandy, Shine on Harvest Moon and The Desert Song, has died of congestive heart failure. She was 91.
She made her film debut in 1938, under the name Hope Manning, appearing opposite singing cowboy Gene Autry in the 1938 horse opera The Old Corral.
Two more films for Republic Pictures followed, along with leading roles with the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera, before she signed a contract with Warner Bros.
It was at Warner's, in a relatively minor role, that Manning likely gained her most lasting fame in 1942's Yankee Doodle Dandy. Opposite James Cagney's legendary song-and-dance man George Cohan, Manning played real-life Broadway star Fay Templeton. She sang Mary's a Grand Old Name, So Long Mary and 45 Minutes From Broadway.
Born Inez Harvuot in Cincinnati, Manning moved with her family to Los Angeles when she was 10 and later studied voice at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y.
She toured the United States and England with her own four-woman USO and recorded with Glenn Miller's Army Air Forces Band during the Second World War.
When her movie career faded after the war, she moved on to the stage, appearing on Broadway, the London stage and in civic light opera productions. She also had her own BBC television show, An American in England, in 1951.
Back in the United States, she appeared in nightclubs and on television's Playhouse 90 before retiring in the mid-1960s. She came out of retirement in the 1970s to appear in a number of musicals in San Francisco Bay area theatres.
