Host Kerry Fund-Raising Event

Simon & Brickell

Singers Paul Simon and Edie Brickell hosted a $1 million fund-raiser with Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry Friday night, but when it came to music there were only the sounds of silence. Simon and his wife Brickell did not perform at the fund-raiser although Simon briefly spoke to the crowd gathered under a tent on his lawn. He praised Kerry's "illustrious life of service."

"History has placed John Kerry in the middle of the most crucial presidential campaign since the days of Vietnam," Simon said.

Among the guests were actors Richard Gere and Chevy Chase and producer Lorne Michaels. Half the money raised will go to Kerry's campaign and the other half to the Democratic National Committee.

Wins Palme D'Or Award at Cannes

'Fahrenheit 9/11'

American filmmaker Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11," a scathing indictment of White House actions after the Sept. 11 attacks, won the top prize Saturday at the Cannes Film Festival.

"Fahrenheit 9/11" was the first documentary to win Cannes' prestigious Palme d'Or since Jacques Cousteau's "The Silent World" in 1956.

Moore was momentarily flabbergasted when he took the stage to accept the award, a big difference from his fiery speech against resident Bush after winning the best-documentary Academy Award for 2002's "Bowling for Columbine."

Just back in Cannes after his daughter's college graduation in the United States, Moore dedicated the award to "my daughter and to all the children in America and Iraq and throughout the world who suffered through our actions."

Forgot To Thank 'Cast'

Michael Moore

After winning the top prize at Cannes for his anti-Bush documentary, American filmmaker Michael Moore said he hoped the resident had not been eating a pretzel when he heard the news Saturday.

Moore admitted to one regret after accepting the Palme d'Or -- he forgot to thank George W. Bush for providing the funniest lines in "Fahrenheit 9/11," a blistering attack on Bush's handling of Iraq and the war on terror.

"I forgot out there on the stage to thank my cast. So if I could do that now, I want to thank Mr. Bush, Mr. Cheney, Paul Wolfowitz and Donald Rumsfeld. I thought the love scene between Cheney and Rumsfeld brought a tear to my eye."

Daytime Emmy Awards

Ellen DeGeneres

Ellen DeGeneres rose to the top of the talk show heap in her first season and "The Young and the Restless" was named best soap opera at the 31st Daytime Emmy Awards Friday night.

The comedian did not sweep the talk categories, however, as Wayne Brady repeated as best talk show host, although "The Wayne Brady Show" has not been renewed for a third season.

CBS soap opera "The Young and the Restless" was honored for the sixth time in its 31 years on the air as the outstanding drama series, with its Michelle Stafford taking the award for outstanding lead actress.

The best lead actor award was given to Anthony Geary, a fixture on ABC's "General Hospital" series.

Bob Barker, who celebrated his 80th birthday this season, was named outstanding host of a game show for the 13th time for "The Price is Right," which was also named best game show.

Animal trainer Jeff Corwin won honors as top performer in a children's series for "Jeff Corwin Unleashed," and actress Gena Rowlands was honored as outstanding performer in a family special for playing the title role in "Mrs. Evelyn Ritchie."

Will Complete Churchill Book

William Manchester

Despite declining health, historian William Manchester will finish the third volume of his biography of Winston Churchill with a little help.

Paul Reid, a feature writer at The Palm Beach Post, has been chosen to work with Manchester on "The Last Lion, Volume III," the final book in Manchester's biography of Britain's World War II leader.

Manchester, 82, had said it was unlikely the biography would ever be finished. The professor emeritus at Wesleyan University has had two strokes.

Death Row Records to Pay

Dwayne H. Baudy

Death Row Records was ordered to pay more than $162,000 to a man who said label owner Marion "Suge" Knight and his bodyguards attacked him at a recording studio in 2001.

In issuing its verdict Tuesday, the Superior Court jury did not hold Knight personally liable for the altercation with Dwayne H. Baudy, but ruled that Death Row Records was responsible for the actions of Knight's security guards.

The record label was ordered to pay Baudy $58,301 for medical bills and $104,340 for lost income, pain and suffering.

Law Students Silent Protest

Berkeley

Some graduating University of California law students used their commencement Saturday to denounce a professor who helped the Bush administration develop a legal framework that critics say led to the abuse of Iraqi prisoners.

About one-quarter of the 270 graduates of Berkeley's Boalt School of Law donned red armbands over their black robes in a silent protest of a legal memo law professor John Yoo co-wrote when he served in the U.S. Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel.

The Jan. 9, 2002, memo, first reported by Newsweek magazine Friday, laid out the legal reasons why the United States didn't have to comply with international treaties governing prisoner rights. It argued that the normal laws of armed conflict didn't apply to al-Qaida and Taliban militia prisoners because they didn't belong to a state.

A petition signed by nearly 200 law students and alumni since Thursday alleges that Yoo's memo "contributed directly to the reprehensible violation of human rights in Iraq and elsewhere."

Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

'Portrait of Jean d'Albon'

A painting Nazis stole from an Austrian Jew more than a half-century ago soon will be returned to its original owner's sole heir.

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is giving back "Portrait of Jean d'Albon" to art collector Julius Priester's sole heir and the manager of his estate, 78-year-old Kurt H. Schindler of Hampshire, England.

The 16th Century, French School painting is attributed to the Dutch-born Corneille de Lyon.

The oil-on-wood-panel painting has been at the museum since 1950, when museum benefactor Wilkins Williams bought it from a gallery in New York. It has lain in storage since 1985, when the museum began an expansion project. Morris said the museum is certain the Wilkins family did not knowingly buy stolen art.

Crashes Into Vegas Buildings

Saturn Blimp

A blimp crashed during takeoff Saturday when gusty winds carried it over a fence and into two office buildings, but no one was injured, authorities said.

A ground crew was assisting with the blimp's departure from the North Las Vegas Airport when the incident occurred, police spokesman Tim Bedwell said. The pilot and passenger aboard were not hurt.

The A-150 blimp, bearing the Saturn corporate logo, is registered to The Lightship Group, based in Orlando, Fla. It was believed to have been headed to Long Beach, Calif., a Federal Aviation Administration official said.

37 Years Later

USS Liberty

For nearly 20 surviving crew members of the USS Liberty, a gathering after 37 years was as much about the future as it was about the past.

The Liberty, an intelligence-gathering vessel, was attacked by Israel in June 1967 while cruising international waters off the Egyptian coast during the Six Day War. Israel was the war's victor, defeating the combined forces of Egypt, Syria, Jordan.

The attack was ruled accidental by U.S. officials. Emerging reports, including disclosures in the last year from some military officials, state the attack appeared to be deliberate - something that the crew members have suspected all along.

Some military and government officials, along with the crew members, have said the attack was not only deliberate, but a cover-up by the American government.

Blows Off Graduation

Jenna Bush

Resident Bush wasn't the only one who skipped the pomp and circumstance of his daughter's graduation from the University of Texas on Saturday. Jenna Bush did not participate either.

Despite her name being listed on the commencement program, Bush was not among the more than 150 English majors receiving degrees Saturday afternoon at the Austin campus. Attendance at the event is not required to graduate from the university.

Jenna Bush simply "decided she didn't want to go to the ceremony. No other reason," said Gordon Johndroe, spokesman for Laura Bush.
