Reader Observation
Only Applies To Republicans
Gotta love those Chickenshit Bush Republicans.
They sure love to play dress-up and dance around like soldiers.
Ask them to actually fight and die for what they supposedly believe in, though, and they're nowhere to be found . . .

Rep. Steve Buyer, R-Ind., left, and Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., pose on the North Lawn of the White House after they were both promoted to the rank of colonel by resident Bush during a ceremony earlier in the Oval Office Thursday, April 29, 2004, in Washington. Sen. Graham, who is an Air Force reservist, and Rep. Buyer, who is an Army reservist, were both exempt from serving in Iraq because they are congressmen republicans, but plan to do their active duty on the home front.

Last Night
Sunny, breezy, but warmer.
The new National Enquirer ('OJ Confesses' on the front cover) has an article on celebrity donors to politicians. Who knew Maury Povich was supporting chimpy? Oh well, since Maury earns his bread by the sustained humiliation of poor people, it only seems right.
One of the local PBS stations (KLCS) airs 'Austin City Limits' at 1am. Had no idea Robert Plant ever did the show, but it's on now and he's 'Going To California'.

Addresses Tribeca Film Festival
Desmond Tutu
South Africa, celebrating its 10th year of democracy after apartheid, has something in common with the Tribeca Film Festival, now in its third year of helping revitalize downtown Manhattan after the 2001 terrorist attacks, Desmond Tutu said.
Tutu is an honorary patron of the Tribeca Film Festival, which began Saturday and runs through May 9. More than 250 films from 42 countries are being shown, including a series of South African offerings.
Robert De Niro and his Tribeca Films partner, Jane Rosenthal, founded the festival in 2002 to help the downtown economy rebound.

People protest outside Florida State University's graduation ceremonies where vice president Dick Cheney gave the commencement address, Saturday, May 1, 2004, in Tallahassee, Fla. Five days after he was criticized for attacking Kerry at Westminster College in Missouri, there was no talk of the 2004 election or resident Bush's policies, and the only reference to the war in Iraq was mentioning 25 FSU students serving in the Middle East.

When Wingers Attack
Ted Koppel
Veteran U.S. journalist Ted Koppel devoted his "Nightline" program Friday to broadcasting the names and photographs of 721 American soldiers killed in Iraq, sparking outrage from conservatives who called it anti-war propaganda.
"Our goal tonight was to elevate the fallen above the politics and the daily journalism," Koppel said at the end of the program. "The reading of those 721 names was neither intended to provoke opposition to the war nor as an endorsement."
The show was broadcast on the eve of the anniversary of Bush's May 1, 2003, "mission accomplished" declaration from the deck of an aircraft carrier that major combat in Iraq was over.
A media company whose executives have been strong supporters of resident Bush, Maryland-based Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc., barred its ABC-affiliated stations from airing the "Nightline" broadcast, calling it a political statement that failed to give all sides oftement that failed to give all sides of the story.

Cutting Down On Public Engagements
Nelson Mandela
Veteran South African leader Nelson Mandela, who turns 86 in July, will cut down on his public engagements as his gruelling schedule over the years have taken their toll, an official close to the anti-apartheid icon revealed.
Sources said Mandela's public appearances will be whittled down with more of the engagements shifted on to three foundations that bear his name -- the Nelson Mandela Chidlren's Fund, the Mandela/Rhodes Foundation and the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
Mandela's main public engagements are now children and AIDS. He has helped the children of his country through his Foundation, which provides funds to build schools and clinics.
His other great struggle is against AIDS, which he has said poses as much of a threat to South Africa as the apartheid regime.

L.A. Designates Studio Historic Monument
Ray Charles
The studio that music legend Ray Charles used for decades and helped to design was designated Friday as a historic monument.
Charles, 73, thanked the city for recognizing the studio, which opened in South Los Angeles in 1964.
"I'm a little weak now, but I'm going to get stronger," said Charles, who late last year had hip replacement surgery. "And I want to thank you all so much, I really do, from my heart."

Contract Expires
Writers, Producers
Their three-year contract expired Saturday, but writers and Hollywood producers have yet to resolve the divisive issue of royalties from DVDs.
Talks aimed at reaching a deal between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers began April 5.
Writers have indicated a willingness to negotiate past the deadline. But producers would have to agree, and without serious discussion of the DVD issue might instead choose to make a last, best offer, a source familiar with the talks said.
The WGA contract covers 11,000 writers. The last strike by the union came in 1988 and delayed the start of the fall TV season.

The Anti-Bobblehead
Ahnold
Actor-turned-politician Arnold Schwarzenegger is threatening to sue an Ohio company hawking a bobblehead doll that bears his name and likeness, according to documents posted by the Smoking Gun.
The site in question, www.bosleybobbers.com, also sells bobbleheads of John Kerry, Wesley Clark and Howard Dean for $19.99 apiece. George W. Bush is a bargain at only $14.95.
Schwarzenegger's lawyers gave the bobblehead makers 48 hours to halt their "outrageous, malicious and tortious actions." After that, legal action will be taken to stop the bobbles.
Bosley Bobbing Head Doll Company contends that since Schwarzenegger became an elected official, his image is public domain.

Augusta Delaying Statue
James Brown
City officials have delayed the unveiling of a statue honoring James Brown until the singer resolves his legal troubles.
Officials originally scheduled the unveiling for May 7 to coincide with the Godfather of Soul's 71st birthday, which is Monday, and the downtown music festival that was named in his honor until recently.
The former James Brown Music Festival reverted to its original name, the Garden City Music Festival, in February because of the public backlash after his Jan. 28 arrest for allegedly hitting his wife, Tomi Rae Brown. Brown has denied the allegations.

Shoots Self in Gun Safety Class
DEA Agent
A federal drug agent shot himself in the leg during a gun safety presentation to children in what police describe as an accident. His bosses, however, are still investigating the incident.
The Drug Enforcement Administration agent, whose name was not released, was speaking April 9 to about 50 adults and students organized by the Orlando Minority Youth Golf Association, witnesses and police said.
He drew his .40-caliber duty weapon and removed the magazine, according to the police report. He then pulled back the slide and asked an audience member to look inside the gun and confirm it wasn't loaded.
Witnesses said when the agent released the slide, one shot fired into the top of his left thigh. The gun was pointed at the floor
