Tries to Save Studios
Joe Barbera
Animator Joe Barbera, co-creator of cartoon legends "Tom and Jerry," "The Jetsons" and "Yogi Bear," hopes to save the studios and offices where the figures were first sketched.
Barbera, 92, wrote a letter to the City Council this week opposing a proposal to demolish two of three buildings that once housed Hanna-Barbera Studios in Hollywood to make room for a development of stores and apartments.
"I sincerely hope that we can protect the legacy and keep the roots of Hollywood animation history firmly secured for the ages," he wrote in the letter presented at a neighborhood meeting, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The city's Cultural Heritage Commission has said the buildings are not architecturally distinguished.

Not Hearing From Stars
Funk Brothers
Jack Ashford of the Funk Brothers, the Motown band that was the subject of a recent documentary, says band members haven't heard from any of Motown's big stars in years.
The Funk Brothers were the house band who played on most of Motown's biggest hits, and are credited with helping create the Motown sound.
They toiled in obscurity behind stars such as Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder. The group disbanded when the label moved from Detroit to Los Angeles three decades ago, without any notice from Motown.
But the Funk Brothers are enjoying newfound fame with the documentary "Standing in the Shadows of Motown," which was released in November. The DVD of the documentary was released earlier this week.

Playing 4 'Secret' Club Shows in S.F.
Metallica
Metallica has scheduled four free concerts at the Fillmore theater in its San Francisco home town next month, the hard rock band said on its fan club web site Friday.
The shows will take place May 18, 19, 21 and 22. Fan club members can enter a draw for a pair of free tickets to one of the shows. Radio stations are also giving away tickets.
"They have a lot of practicing to do, what with not touring in almost three years, and with the new brother in town, they need to get their act together....it's going to take four nights," the web site (
www.metclub.com) said.
Additionally, the band said it would play three club shows in one day in Paris June 11. The trek begins at La Boule Noire at 1 p.m. local time, continues to Le Bataclan at 6 p.m. and ends up at Le Trabendo at 10 p.m. Fan club members will be able to buy tickets before they go on sale to the public.

Performed With Dave Eggers
They Might Be Giants
A sort of chemistry set experiment between music and literature resulted in a rare fusion of the band They Might Be Giants with the work of smart-set scribe Dave Eggers.
The band performed alongside a reading by Eggers, editor of McSweeney's literary magazine and author of the droll memoir "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius," at the University of California, Los Angeles.
The writer and musicians previously collaborated on a 2001 edition of the magazine that included a music CD to accompany the stories, poems and pictures.
Sarah Vowell, a contributor to the public radio show "This American Life," and novelist Zadie Smith, author of "White Teeth," also performed readings during the three-hour show.
They Might Be Giants, led by keyboardist and accordion player John Linnell and guitarist John Flansburgh, played backup to the readings, then showcased their own songs inspired by each author's work.

Faces Felony Charges
Robert Conrad
Actor Robert Conrad will be arraigned May 6 on felony charges of driving under the influence of alcohol after a car crash a month ago left a man hospitalized in serious condition, Calaveras County prosecutors said Friday.
Conrad, best known for his roles in "Baa Baa Black Sheep" and "The Wild Wild West," crashed head-on into another vehicle March 31 on Highway 4 near Arnold.
The driver of the other car, Kevin Burnett, 26, of Forest Meadows, suffered multiple injuries but has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home.
A spokeswoman for the district attorney's office said Conrad's blood-alcohol level was 0.22 percent. The legal limit in California is less than 0.08 percent.
The spokeswoman said Conrad will face two felony counts, formally listed as driving under the influence with injury and driving while having 0.08 percent or more alcohol in the blood system with injury.

Owners of Guitar Win Suit
Jimi Hendrix Estate
Owners of a vintage 1967 Fender Stratocaster that they say once belonged to Jimi Hendrix won a suit against the legendary musician's estate for trying to halt an online sale of the guitar.
A jury awarded Rock Stars Guitars $131,000 Friday, finding that Hendrix's estate hurt the company's efforts to auction off the guitar on eBay because it questioned the instrument's authenticity, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
But whether Hendrix ever owned the Rock Stars' Fender Stratocaster remains in question. Company owners Greg Dorsett and David Brewis say a former roadie with ties to Hendrix sold them the instrument for $60,000 in 1999. The roadie said Hendrix gave it to him.
The guitar was originally made for a right-handed player but converted for a left-handed one. Hendrix was left-handed but was known for buying his instruments off the rack, according to the Tribune.
When the company tried to auction off the guitar on eBay in March 2001, Hendrix's estate wrote letters questioning the guitar's authenticity and managed to halt the auction temporarily.
The jury ruled that Hendrix's estate essentially blocked the San Diego-based company from selling the guitar for market value. Its owners say it's worth about $350,000.

Mill in 'Norma Rae' to Close
WestPoint Stevens Inc
A textile mill where labor organizers claimed the first major union victory in the South, an effort that inspired the 1979 movie "Norma Rae," is closing this summer.
WestPoint Stevens Inc. said Friday that to stay efficient in a global economy, it would have to close its towel-making complex in Roanoke Rapids and lay off 320 workers.
At least 150 such textile plants have closed in the Carolinas in the last five years, ending thousands of jobs.
In 1974, the Roanoke Rapids factory, which had 3,100 workers, became the site of the first big win for labor in the South after an 11-year organizing effort. The union and textiles giant J.P. Stevens & Co. Inc., WestPoint's predecessor, agreed on a contract six years later.

Arrested in New Orleans
Jamie Foxx
Comedian Jamie Foxx and his sister were arrested early Saturday after allegedly refusing to leave a casino and then fighting with police officers called to escort them out, authorities said.
Foxx, 35, and Deidra Dixon, 25, refused to show identification when they entered Harrah's Casino at about 4 a.m., then argued with security guards who ordered them to leave, said police Capt. Marlon A. Defillo. He said the two walked inside to a gambling table, then fought with police officers who were called to remove them.
Dixon struck one officer in the face, Defillo said. He said the officers used pepper spray and handcuffed them.
Foxx, booked with trespassing, battery on officers and resisting arrest, was released on $1,900 bond. Dixon, of Tarzana, Calif., was booked with trespassing, simple battery on officers and resisting arrest.

Goldfish Is Placed in Sling
Dick
A 17-year-old goldfish can swim again thanks to a bunch of do-gooding humans.
Customers at the Sky Port diner near Schenectady came up with the idea of a creating a fish sling after Dick the goldfish fell ill in November and had difficulty swimming.
Patty Sherman, who owns the diner with her two sisters, Joanna Dewey and Mary Ann Parker, said Dick could barely move across the bottom of his fish tank located behind the counter.
A customer whose daughter is studying to be a veterinarian had his daughter research fish ailments. She reported back that Dick was likely suffering from swim bladder disease and prescribed a diet of cooked peas to be hand fed to Dick three times a day, Sherman said.
To remedy Dick's swimming problem, several customers devised a sling made up of fishing bobbers, drinking straws, gauze and string. When the 8-inch-long fish is placed in the sling, he's able to swim like normal.
"Everybody's rooting for him," Sherman said Tuesday. "He's the topic of conversation at the Sky Port."

Getting A New Look
U.S. Nickel
The simple act of flipping a nickel will soon change. The U.S. Mint plans to alter the coin's design this year to celebrate the bicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark expedition.
The nickel has not changed since 1938 when the popular "buffalo" version was supplanted by one with President Thomas Jefferson on one side and his home, Monticello, on the back.
U.S. Mint said the nickel design change, which must by law last only until 2005, will keep Jefferson on the heads side.
But the other side will change to images celebrating the 200th anniversary of America's 1803 Louisiana Purchase and the adventures of explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. There are about 18.9 billion nickels in circulation.
The penny was last changed in 1959 when the Lincoln Memorial was added to the back and the dime got a face-lift in 1946 with the addition of President Franklin Roosevelt's image.

Given Traditional Funeral In Vietnam
Whale
Fishermen in central Vietnam brought ashore and buried a dead whale in a traditional ceremony symbolising their respect for the huge sea mammals.
The corpse of the 12-metre (yard) long whale was discovered off Phan Ri Cua beach in Binh Thuan province, a policeman said Friday.
"It had already started decaying when the fishermen found it but due to their superstitions they still brought it ashore and buried," he said.
Earlier this month, 1,000 mourners attended a funeral for another whale that died after becoming stranded on a beach in the central city of Danang.
