February Issue of GQ
Check out the February 2004 edition of GQ. Or Febuary
as the Freepers seem to have renamed the month in
their posts....
Ashton Kutchner on the cover... Note to Ashton: Don't
wear a green and white striped shirt with a black
pinstriped waist coat for your court date over that
MTV show. The creative director was kidding.
First up, the part people never read unless they are
stuck in the bathroom recovering from an intestinal
problem brought on by the SOTU address.
"Letter from the editor"
< snip>
I think all Americans can sleep a little more soundly
tonight on our Sealy Posturepedic mattresses, knowing
that Saddam Hussein will never again attack our
nation, like he did in the '60s, when we didn't have
moral resolve. And I know the Iraqi people will warm
to President Bush's command that they are now free to
"reject violence." That man always finds just the
right words for every occasion!
In fact, listening to him I'm reminded of (1) George
Orwell and (2) George Bush senior. He had a nice way
of talking. He'd take something evil and make you feel
really positive about it. "I know some people don't
support my policy to spew toxins into the faces of
immigrant people, but this country has always been
about opportunity, and I stand before you today to
say, I...AM...For IT" (Wild applause).
I'd always get goose bumps.
Whether or not you support President George W.Orwell's
massive rejection of violence in Iraq, you'll be
informed and entertained by Devin Friedman's "Welcome
to the Occupation" (page 126), an inspired work of
reporting and writing about what life is like in the
new Iraq.
< snip>
And remember: We can all reject violence in '04!"
I kid you not. That was their editor-in-chief, Jim
Nelson, on page 26 of next month's magazine.
There is a four page comic book style cartoon about
some git who took over California which ends with
Arnuhld saying, "M-m-me? Fuhrer? Um, I mean
president?"
There's a balanced article on Iraq that covers NG
grunts, US war profiteers who pass themselves off as
entrepreneurs, an Iraqi translator who ends up dead
for collaboration and some guy who took over the
country without a popular mandate. Something like
Bremer I think the name was.
There's a brief Tina Fey (SNL) interview in which she
is asked to describe Bush in three words, "The first
one that comes to mind is cocky. Dullard is coming to
mind. And well-meaning."
Two out of three when you don't want to get Dixie
Chicked seems pretty reasonable.
To close it all out, on the inside back opposite the
obligatory pays-the-bills ad for cancer sticks, "16
Campaign slogans for George W. Bush" Including such
gems as:
- Reviving the economy to where it had been already.
- Oh, what's a few million jobs lost?
- Extremisim in the defense of stupidity is no vice.
Bush '04.
I should browse my dentist's magazine rack more often.
These folk may even have won a subscription for that
effort. Only a buck a copy from on-line sources, I
have heard.
No, before you ask, I'm in no way connected with GQ.
They don't take sloppy dressers with bad hair.

Continues Iraq War Protest
Harry Belafonte
At a time when the Dixie Chicks and other performers have been criticized for speaking against the Iraq war and Bush administration, actor and singer Harry Belafonte says he believes it's his duty to continue protesting as he has since the early days of the civil rights movement.
"Today it's almost a disease, there's some social flaw if an artist at any level dares to participate in political or social action, somehow you are out of your league, why don't you just shut up and entertain. It's somehow that we are not citizens," Belafonte said Thursday at a panel hosted by Paxton Baker of the BET Jazz cable channel at the International Association for Jazz Education's annual conference.
"I find protest very entertaining and very instructive," he added, recalling that during the civil rights movement Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and other jazz musicians didn't hesitate to support the cause. "I think there is a need for artists to jump in here, to be heard. We've got to stop distancing ourselves."

Backs Wesley Clark
Ted Danson
Ted Danson, who played Sam Malone on "Cheers" for 12 seasons, and his wife, actress Mary Steenburgen, have been campaigning in New Hampshire for retired Army Gen. Wesley Clark.
Steenburgen's mother and Clark's mother were friends and co-workers at an Arkansas bank who used to brag about their children.
"He's not a braggart, that's why his mom had to do it. " Steenburgen said of Clark. "Now that she's not here, that's what I'm for."

Loyola University Blocks
'Vagina Monologues'
Loyola University has blocked a campus production of Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues," apparently after the Jesuit school's president voiced concerns about the play's language.
Loyola spokeswoman Kristine Lelong confirmed that the play will not be produced on campus.
Loyola's production had been planned for Valentine's Day as part of a national "V-Day" campaign to stop violence against women. Proceeds would have gone to the Loyola's Women's Issues Organization.

The Bottom Line
The Bottom Line, the legendary New York music club where for nearly 30 years stars like Bruce Springsteen and Miles Davis took the stage, has hit the finish line over a rent dispute.
Co-owners Allan Pepper and Stanley Snadowsky, childhood friends who opened the club in 1974, posted a farewell note on the club's Web site that said, "The Bottom Line has always been about the music, and we find fulfillment in knowing that we have stayed the course and remained true to our vision."
The closure came three weeks before the 400-seat club was to celebrate its anniversary with Kris Kristofferson, David Johansen, David Bromberg, Doc Watson and Loudon Wainwright III among those lined up to perform.

Shutting Doors?
'Boston Pubic'
The school year may already be over for David E. Kelley's Boston Public.
Fox has suspended production on the high school series, now shooting its 15th episode, leaving the show's fate up in the air.
Boston Public originally got a 13-episode order for the 2003-04 season, Fox later ordered two more. That's still less than the 22 usually shot for a full season.
The network maintains that the program could still be a contender for renewal.

Stars at Rio Fashion Show
Paris Hilton
Topping the year's worst dressed list hasn't made Paris Hilton any less of a fashion plate. The socialite and reality TV star became a model — and the main attraction of Rio's fashion week — as she strolled the catwalk for local designer Colcci.
With most top models staying away from this season's Fashion Rio — the weeklong fashion event ending Saturday — Hilton was the closest thing the event had to a star.

Return To Drug Program Ordered
Scott Weiland
Stone Temple Pilots lead singer Scott Weiland was ordered to return to a live-in drug detoxification center after leaving early, officials said.
Weiland, 36 was ordered last October to report to the facility after pleading no contest to possession of heroin. A Superior Court judge learned Friday that he had walked out or was discharged after only a month and ordered him to return, said Jane Robison, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.
Weiland reported back to the facility Friday afternoon. He is eligible for release in July but must participate in a six-month followup program.

Eminem's Mom 'Jacked'
Debbie Nelson
A 16-year-old boy dragged Eminem's mother, Debbie Nelson, from her car on the street made infamous by the rapper's movie "8 Mile," according to police.
The teenager was arrested shortly after the carjacking Thursday night as he tried to flee from police on foot in this northern Detroit suburb, and the car was recovered.
The teenager was charged as an adult with carjacking and armed robbery Friday and is being held in lieu of $150,000 cash bond, said police, who did not believe the carjacker recognized Nelson.

Ex-Anna Nicole Beau Sentenced
Mark Hatten
An ex-boyfriend of Anna Nicole Smith was sentenced to nearly seven years in prison for making criminal threats against the former Playboy Playmate and attacking her neighbor, officials said.
Hatten was convicted last November of making criminal threats against Smith, who testified she had a brief sexual relationship with him in 2000 that ended when he approached her with a knife in her home. Hatten claimed they had an on-again, off-again relationship.
Hatten was also convicted of assault for a fight involving a neighbor who went to Smith's house to persuade Hatten to leave.

Hononary Knighthood
Bill Gates
Microsoft supremo Bill Gates is to receive an honorary British knighthood for services to global enterprise, it was reported.
The Sunday Telegraph reported that Gates, 48, was recommended for the knighthood -- which is to be formally conveyed by Queen Elizabeth II -- by Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown, the newspaper said, adding that an announcement would be made on Monday.
Britain gives the title of honorary Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, or KBE, from time to time to distinguished non-Britons, many of them Americans.
Such foreign knights cannot, however, prefix their names with "sir".

Germany Pays Tribute, Plans Museum
Helmut Newton
A Berlin museum to showcase the work of Helmut Newton will open in June despite the photographer's death in a car crash on Friday, the foundation in charge of the project said on Saturday.
"The planned opening, which Helmut Newton had looked forward to with great joy, will be a day of remembrance for one of the most important photographers of our time," the Prussian Culture Foundation, which oversees Berlin museums, said in a statement.
Newton donated 1,000 works to his native city last October despite being forced to flee Nazi Germany because of his Jewish ancestry. "When I left in 1938, I never missed Germany, but I missed Berlin a lot," he said at the time.

In Memory
Billy May
Billy May, a Grammy-winning composer and trumpeter who arranged such standards as "Cherokee," "Take the A Train" and "Serenade in Blue" and worked with such stars as Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and Glenn Miller, died at age 87.
May died Thursday of heart failure at his home in San Juan Capistrano, his wife, Doris May, told The Associated Press on Friday.
The musician, who won a Grammy in 1958 for his album "Big Fat Brass," was noted not only for his brass-heavy, "slurping saxophone" arrangements, but his command of styles extended from swing to the mambo.
He also had a brilliant sense of humor, said satirist Stan Freberg, who collaborated with May on Freberg's Grammy-winning 1961 comedy album "The History of the United States, Vol. 1," and 1996's Grammy-nominated "History of the United States, Vol. 2."
Born in Pittsburgh, May played in several local bands before getting his break in 1938 when he joined Charlie Barnet's orchestra as an arranger and trumpeter. Among his contributions was arranging the Ray Noble song "Cherokee," which became Barnet's signature tune and one of the biggest hits of the swing era.
He later joined Miller's band, where he arranged the standards "Take the `A' Train" and "Serenade in Blue" and gained attention for his trumpet work on Miller's version of "American Patrol."
During the 1940s, he wrote arrangements for Les Brown, Woody Herman and Alvino Rey, and in the 1950s he worked on Sinatra's acclaimed "Come Fly With Me" album.
In a career that spanned five decades, he also led his own band, the Billy May Orchestra, arranged and conducted for Peggy Lee and Nat "King" Cole, and worked in radio and television. With Milton Raskin, he wrote the theme music for the popular 1950s police drama "Naked City."
In addition to his wife, May is survived by daughters Cynthia May, Laureen Mitchell, Joannie Ransom and Sandra Gregory, and a brother, John.
