Top Tour in 2003
Rolling Stones
Bruce Springsteen and his mighty E Street Band put up some huge numbers on the road in 2003. But Springsteen was not the top touring artist of 2003, despite numerous media claims to the contrary.
From start to finish, the Stones' Licks tour grossed $299,520,230 from 113 shows dating back to September 2002. We lumped the entire tour into 2003's Billboard Boxscore stats because we received them all at once from promoter Michael Cohl's office at the end of the tour. We do not estimate.
For the year, Springsteen's reported grosses totaled $181.7 million worldwide. If you take away the $90 million or so the Stones did in fall 2002, the band still easily outpaced Springsteen. The Boss' tour grossed $221.5 million from 121 shows, so tour for tour, the Stones also topped Springsteen's by more than $70 million.

Roy Disney
Roy E. Disney got a standing ovation Saturday as he brought his campaign to oust Walt Disney Co. chairman and chief executive Michael Eisner to lovers of all things Disney.
Disney said management decisions have dulled the creative edge of the entertainment giant.
"One of the reasons for my leaving, other than the fact that they fired me, was that I saw that quality slipping away from us," Disney told about 200 collectors of Disney memorabilia at their semiannual meeting.
The 72-year-old son of company co-founder Roy O. Disney resigned from the board of directors in November after learning that that the board's governance and nominating committee was going to enforce the mandatory retirement age of 72.

Explains Cell Phone Time
Kiefer Sutherland
Spending so much time on the cell phone isn't easy for Golden Globe nominee Kiefer Sutherland in Fox's drama, "24."
Viewers have noticed his character's on-camera phone time. Sutherland explains it's easier to talk on the phone while he's on the run than with somebody else.
"It has become a device where my character can internalize a panic, can express a thousand different things while having a conversation with someone else and have a vocal tone that's completely betraying everything else that you can see," he said.

Recording Album
Jai Rodriguez
Jai Rodriguez, the culture maven of Bravo/NBC hit reality series "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy," is in the studio recording his debut album.
If initial tracks are any indication, the full-length release will encompass dance ("Love Is Good"), R&B ("Back to L.A.") and pop ("Shining Star"). And don't fret, Rodriguez can sing.
Before joining the Fab 5 on "Queer Eye," he performed on Broadway ("Rent") and off-Broadway ("Zanna, Don't!"). Last March, Arrive at Eleven Productions issued Rodriguez's "Love Is Good." The track became a favorite in New York, prompting a performance by Rodriguez at the Roxy club. Then came "Queer Eye."

It may seem like only yesterday but the Beatles' much-heralded first visit to America was 40 years ago, and a group of die-hard fans wants to mark the occasion for Beatles lovers here, there and everywhere.
The Fab 40 Committee will kick off the Beatles celebrations with a party and concert at New York's Hard Rock Cafe on Feb. 9, 40 years to the day after the British group first performed on The Ed Sullivan Show, organizers said on Friday.

Sentenced in Attack
Scott Bairstow
Actor Scott Bairstow was sentenced to four months in jail for an attack involving a 12-year-old girl.
Bairstow originally was charged with second-degree child rape but entered a modified guilty plea last month to a reduced charge of second-degree assault. Bairstow, who has been in the Snohomish County Jail since Dec. 5, could be freed in 37 days with credit for time served and good behavior, authorities said.
In the Alford plea, Bairstow, 33, maintained he was innocent but conceded he would likely be convicted if the case went to trial.
Bairstow, who appeared on Fox's "Party of Five" in 1998 and 1999, also was ordered to undergo a sexual deviancy evaluation and 12 months of supervision after his release.

More Integrity...
Cheney & Scalia
Government watchdogs are raising concerns about a potential conflict of interest for Justice Antonin Scalia because he had dinner and went on a hunting trip with Dick Cheney while the Supreme Court was involved in a case about the vice president's energy task force.
Scalia and Cheney, longtime friends, had dinner at a restaurant on Maryland's Eastern Shore in November, two months after the Bush administration asked the justices to overrule a lower court's decision requiring White House to identify task force members.
The men went duck hunting in Louisiana this month, not long after the court agreed to hear the case.
Scalia says there is no reason to question his ability to judge the case fairly. Cheney's office referred questions about the propriety of the social encounters to the court.
Scalia, in a written statement to the Los Angeles Times for its story Saturday on the duck hunting trip, said: "I do not think my impartiality could reasonably be questioned." A court spokeswoman, Kathy Arberg, confirmed the statement Saturday and said Scalia would have nothing more to say.

Archive to Go Online
WWII Aerial Photos
A huge British archive of World War II aerial reconnaissance photos, including pictures of the D-Day landings in Normandy, is to go on the Internet on Monday.
Under the digitalization project announced Saturday, some 5 million Royal Air Force photos of Western Europe will be available to the public on the Web site
www.evidenceincamera.co.uk., archivists said. The site did not appear to be accessible on Saturday.
The photos, a key source of intelligence for Allied commanders during the war, include American troops landing in Normandy on D-Day, the effects of the bombing of Cologne, Germany, and the German battleship Bismarck being hunted by the Royal Navy.

Philip Crosby
Philip Crosby, son of legendary crooner Bing Crosby and an entertainer in his own right, has died of a heart attack. He was 69.
Bing Crosby had four sons from his marriage to former jazz singer and actress Dixie Lee: Gary, Lindsay and twins Dennis and Philip.
Philip Crosby's show business career was brief. He had some recordings and small parts in films such as "Robin and the Seven Hoods" and "None but the Brave," both starring Frank Sinatra.
Crosby's appearances on stage also were sporadic. He told People magazine in 1983 that his last gig was at an Elks Club party in Burbank.
He had been married four times by then. His first three wives were Las Vegas showgirls.

Ray Stark
Ray Stark, a publicist and actors' agent who became a Hollywood power broker and producer of such movies as
'Funny Girl' (1968),
'The Way We Were' (1973), and
'The Sunshine Boys' (1975), died Saturday after a long illness. He was 88.
Stark was considered the last of the great independent producers, following the pattern of Samuel Goldwyn and David O. Selznick. Like them, he made films that were often based on best-selling books or hit plays, rich in production value and cast with major stars.
But unlike Goldwyn and Selznick, who thrived on publicity, Stark preferred to remain out of the limelight.
He gave only a handful of interviews during his career, and then only if he had an ax to grind. He issued only a few details in his official biography and was even sketchy about his age. He indicated his birth date was 1914, but gave no month or day.
A news release from Stark's family Saturday said he was born Oct. 3, 1915. (Note:
IMDB gives the date of birth as 3 October 1914)
Stark's career as producer was notable for his association with Barbra Streisand.
'Funny Girl' (1968) won Streisand an Oscar as best actress (shared in a tie with Katharine Hepburn (news) for "The Lion in Winter"). She made three more films under her contract with Stark —
'The Owl and the Pussycat' (1970),
'The Way We Were' (1973),
'Funny Lady' (1975). Even after they parted, they remained friends.
Stark films also won Academy Awards for
George Burns ['The Sunshine Boys' (1975)],
Richard Dreyfuss ['The Goodbye Girl' (1977)] and
Maggie Smith [California Suite (1978)].
Stark was educated at Rutgers University in New Jersey and first worked as a reporter and publicist. After World War II, he entered the agency business, starting with radio writers as clients, then moving up to authors such as John P. Marquand, Thomas Costain and Ben Hecht.
Stark was long married to Frances Brice. They had two children, including a son who died of a drug overdose. Stark owned a horse farm where he raised thoroughbreds for his racing stable, and he and his wife accumulated one of the most impressive art collections in the film community.
In a rare public statement, Stark in 1999 answered a Los Angeles Times request for his philosophy about film making. In his essay, Stark deplored the trend toward homogenization of movies:
"Films work best when they're specific; oddly enough, the more specific, the more universal the story. For example: check those artists who've had an impact on films: Orson Welles, Chaplin, Bergman, Hitchcock, John Ford, and writers like Neil Simon, Ben Hecht, Tennessee Williams. They never tailored their works for the largest audience possible. Instead, the largest audience came to them."
Ray Stark
