Watermelon is thought to have originated in southern Africa, where it is found growing wild, because it reaches maximum genetic diversity there, resulting in sweet, bland and bitter forms.

Q: What do you get when one consumes too much watermelon followed by a ride on the Tilt-a-Whirl?
A: It's pink, but not very pretty.
It's also why I can't eat watermelon to this day. (Nearly 50 years later.)

I am thinking that watermelons were native to tropical Africa, although their seeds have been found in the royal tombs in Egypt. Haven't time to check this out.
Whoa, who knew??
PS: I have survived the week, and the kids. In fairness, they are great kids, and I enjoyed caring for them. :)

Somewhere on the continent of Africa.
Historians say watermelons first grew in the middle of the Kalahari Desert. They were a source of water for thirsty traders, who began to sell the seeds in cities along the ancient Mediterranean trade routes. Other historians say Egypt or Southern Africa.

Atheist bloggers have shown their charitable side by swarming to donate money to Doctors Without Borders, in what turned into the humanitarian agency's biggest online fundraiser.
Doctors without Borders (DWB), also known as Medecins Sans Frontieres, gets about 4,000 hits on its U.S. website on an average Sunday. Last Sunday that number ballooned to 50,000 as a horde of redditors, subscribers to the social media site reddit.com, thundered across the DWB homepage.
Thousands more clicked through from the atheism sub-reddit, a site normally given over to finding holes in religions and picking fights with creationists, and headed for a dedicated site at firstgiving.com, where they have so far given $180,000.
Reddit's atheist page, www.reddit.com/r/atheism, boasts more than 300,000 subscribers while the Christianity page has 20,000.

Occupy Wall Street protesters late Thursday took over the empty set of television crime drama "Law & Order: SVU," which built a mock tent city for an episode based on the movement, but they were soon removed by police.
The set was designed to look like Manhattan's original Zuccotti Park encampment complete with tents and signs, and plans called for the TV show to shoot there on Friday morning, according to protesters who spoke with crew members.
It was empty when protesters arrived at midnight, but they were ejected around 1 a.m. when police moved in, protesters said. Cheers rose up when cops with bullhorns announced that the film permit for the shoot had been revoked.
"It was both kind of cathartic and nostalgic, and kind of mind-bending as well," said organizer Jake Begroot, 26, of Queens. "It was a real occupation of a fake, set up occupation. It was a mock-upation."
Another protester said that Occupy Wall Street protesters simply couldn't resist the irony of occupying a TV set built to represent their encampment, from which they were evicted last month. The set was built several blocks from Zuccotti Park, in front the Manhattan State Supreme Court building.
An Orthodox Jewish rabbi who was barred from serving as an Army chaplain because he refused to shave the beard required by his faith has won his legal fight against the military and will be sworn in Friday.
Rabbi Menachem Stern of Brooklyn will be officially admitted to the chaplaincy in a ceremony at The Shul Jewish Community Center in Surfside, Florida. Stern is a member of the Chabad Lubavitch movement of Judaism, whose rabbis are prohibited from shaving their beards.
The rabbi saw an advertisement in late 2008 for military chaplains and attended a recruiter's presentation. After consulting with his wife, he decided to apply in January 2009, making clear in his application he intended to keep his beard.
According to the lawsuit he would later file, Stern was alerted by both email and letter that he had been accepted. When he first got word, he said he jumped in the air, thrilled at the news.
A day after the latter mailing, though, the Army rescinded its offer, citing its prohibition on beards.
"The Nate Berkus Show," starring Oprah Winfrey's favorite interior designer, will fold at the end of its current, second season, TheWrap has confirmed.
The decorating-centered show will still air the remainder of its season. The series premiered last year, but never caught ratings fire.
Winfrey, a champion of Berkus, left the airwaves earlier this year to focus on her OWN network. But a person close to the Berkus show told TheWrap that it will not be following Winfrey to OWN.
Berkus leaves a daytime landscape that will soon be crowded with new shows from Jeff Probst and Katie Couric, among other
The University of Kansas is buying up website names such as www.KUgirls.xxx and www.KUnurses.xxx. But not because it's planning a Hot Babes of Kansas site or an X-rated gallery of the Nude Girls of the Land of Aaahs.
Instead, the university and countless other schools and businesses are rushing to prevent their good names from falling into the hands of the pornography industry. Over the past two months, they have snapped up tens of thousands of ".xxx" website names that could be exploited by the adult entertainment business.
"Down the road there's no way we can predict what some unscrupulous entrepreneur might come up with," said Paul Vander Tuig, trademark licensing director at the Lawrence, Kan., school.
The university spent nearly $3,000 in all. It plans to sit on the .xxx names and do nothing with them.
The brand-new .xxx suffix is an adults-only variation on .com. The .xxx name went on sale to the public for the first time this week, promoted as a way to enable porn sites to distinguish themselves and a means of making it easier for Internet filters to screen out things parents don't want their children to see.
A judge has sentenced Jodie Foster's estranged father to five years in a Los Angeles jail for bilking more than $100,000 from poor and elderly people in a home-building scheme.
City attorney spokesman Frank Mateljan says Lucius Foster was sentenced Friday, two days after he was convicted of 21 misdemeanor counts of grand theft. The 89-year-old has been jailed since Wednesday.
He was convicted of taking $5,000 each from people for whom he promised to build affordable homes made from cargo containers. The units were never built, and prosecutors said he blatantly lied to clients.
Lucious Foster told City News Service that he remains estranged from his daughter, a two-time Oscar winner. He is due back in court Feb. 23 for a restitution hearing.
Clark James Gable, the grandson of "Gone With the Wind" star Clark Gable, has pleaded guilty to pointing a laser at a Los Angeles Police Department helicopter, the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office announced Thursday.
Gable, 23, is expected to receive 10 days in jail and 200 hours of work on a CalTrans crew for the incident, which occurred last July.
His sentencing, on the felony count of discharge of a laser at an occupied aircraft, is scheduled for Jan 12.
According to the DA's office, Gable pointed a 52-milliwatt laser light at the helicopter as it flew 800 feet above Hollywood Blvd., obstructing the vision of the officers inside the helicopter.
In exchange for Gable's guilty plea, prosecutors will ask that two other felony counts of discharge of a laser, as well as a one count of assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury, be dismissed.

Playboy magazine is advancing the newsstand date for its upcoming issue with nude pictures of actress Lindsay Lohan in part due to photos that were leaked online in advance, Hugh Hefner said on Friday.
The Playboy founder tweeted that the issue will now go on sale late next week, which roughly coincides with the December 15 airdate for Lohan's planned interview on Ellen DeGeneres' TV talk show.
"Because of the interest & the internet leak, we're releasing the Lindsay Lohan issue early," Hefner posted on Twitter. He later added that "her issue goes on sale late next week," although he did not give a specific date.
This week, a picture snapped of the cover featuring Lohan was leaked online, and on Friday, nude pictures of the actress also landed on the Web. Those pictures are very similar to Marilyn Monroe's iconic centerfold photograph used in 1953's first Playboy issue.
"Avatar" director James Cameron has been hit with a lawsuit by a writer who claims that the plot for the hit sci-fi movie was lifted from his own project.
In the suit, which was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court Thursday, Eric Ryder claims that he entered into an agreement with Cameron's production company, Lightstorm Entertainment, to develop a movie based on his story "KRZ 2068."
According to the suit, the project was envisioned as "an environmentally themed 3-D epic about a corporation's colonization and plundering of a distant moon's lush and wondrous natural setting."
After working on the project for nearly two years, Ryder alleges, Lightstorm put the kibosh on it, explaining that "no one would be interested in an environmentally themed science fiction feature film."
Shortly after, the suit says, Lightstorm began work on "Avatar," which Ryder says, "liberally and substantially uses material that fell within the LEI-Ryder agreement."

The Writers Guild of America, West has not fully recovered its finances after a strike by Hollywood writers four years ago crippled the industry.
The Los Angeles Daily Journal reported Friday that the guild, which represents some 20,200 film and television writers, is still owed $785,000 by members who received loans to tide them over during the strike, which lasted from November 2007 to February 2008.
The guild loaned a total of $3.2 million to 239 members out of its $9.2 million strike fund.
The loans initially were given interest-free and were to be repaid within two years. The guild's board has extended the loans indefinitely, although it is now charging 3.25 percent interest.
In a reversal of fortunes, a once-unwanted cat has come to the rescue of an animal shelter in need of a new home.
However, this orange-and-white tabby named Daniel is no typical cat. He has a near-record 26 toes, a phenomenon that is helping the nonprofit Milwaukee Animal Rescue Center raise money to relocate to a new building.
Normal cats have 18 toes, but Daniel has two extra on each foot due to a genetic mutation called polydactylism.
Officials at the center found out their rent at a Milwaukee-area mall was being doubled on Jan. 1. So, the shelter is buying a new building and is seeking small donations of $26 - or $1 per toe.
They've collected enough so far to secure the financing with about $80,000 raised since Oct. 24, but they hope to raise $120,000 by Dec. 23 so they can become even more financially stable. About $50,000 of the money raised has come from $26 donations.
