George Carlin

Comedian George Carlin has agreed to terms for a new book, "When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops?" an essay collection to be published next year by Hyperion.

"Here we go again, folks. Cheap shots, horrifying thoughts and a few bright ideas," Carlin, whose previous books include the best-selling "Brain Droppings," said in a statement Wednesday.

A popular stage and television performer, Carlin, 66, also has appeared in several films, including "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" and the upcoming "Jersey Girl," starring Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez.

Contract Make Over

'Queer Eye' Guys

NBC has come to terms on a new deal for the stars of "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy," the hit show on its Bravo cable channel.

Recently completed negotiations have produced a contract awaiting signatures on both sides of the deal, according to sources, who indicated that the Fab Five all received raises more than doubling their original salaries. Although fronted by four different talent agencies -- as well as various managers and lawyers -- the Fab Five representatives banded together in order to command equal pay.

The "Queer" quintet returned to the negotiating table with new agents in tow after the first season to remedy the relative pittance they made at $3,000 per episode. Their new deal doles out at least $8,000 per episode, according to one source familiar with the deal.

The new deal also guarantees that a specific number of the new episodes will be repurposed (i.e. recycled) on NBC in primetime, which would pay out additional dollars to the hosts in each instance. They were not remunerated by NBC for the repurposed episodes during the first season.

Last month, NBC ordered 40 new episodes of "Queer" from Scout Prods. The series' initial 13-episode run, which began in July, was an instant ratings hit for Bravo and performed well in select airings on NBC.

CNN Aims for Young Voters

TV Debate

Courting an audience that doesn't heavily watch the network, CNN is teaming with the Rock the Vote organization to sponsor a Democratic presidential debate with questions asked by young voters.

The 90-minute debate airs Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET on CNN from Faneuil Hall in Boston.

"For me, what will make it interesting is if we are able to cut through their talking points," said Anderson Cooper, the 36-year-old anchor who will moderate the forum.

Get 'Naked' on Radio

Beatles

Infinity Broadcasting has teamed with Apple Corps to present a premiere airing of "Let It Be...Naked," the new version of the Beatles' swan song.

The album will be aired in its entirety Nov. 13 at 10 p.m. ET on Infinity stations in 35 major U.S. markets. TV journalist Pat O'Brien will host the broadcast, which will be followed by a live roundtable discussion with musicians and other guests discussing the album and the Beatles' legacy.

In the 10 days leading up to the premiere, 72 Infinity stations across the U.S. will broadcast teaser "vignettes" of rare or unreleased excerpts from the original "Let It Be" recording sessions.

"Let It Be...Naked" will be released Nov. 18 on EMI. The album has been thoroughly remixed to remove the post-recording orchestral overdubs added by producer Phil Spector in the absence of the band, which was mired in interpersonal tumult at the time.

Tour Gross of $145 Million

Cher

The 200 concerts in Cher's Farewell tour -- which started last year and is set to wrap Friday at the Sky Tent in Toronto -- grossed $145 million and drew 2.2 million fans.

Cher's earnings of $70 million for her 2003 dates will again rank her among the elite artists of the year. Last year, she finished second behind Paul McCartney in terms of box office.

Other top tours by women include those by Tina Turner, who grossed $108 million in 2000; Madonna, $74 million in 2001; Britney Spears, $43.7 million in 2002; and Janet Jackson, $41 million in 2001.

Truth Hurts

Reagan Movie

Worried about how former President Reagan and his wife are portrayed in a CBS TV mini-series "The Reagans," the Republican Party asked the network on Friday to submit the program to historians for review or label it as not historically accurate.

The New York Times, which said it obtained a copy of the final script, reported earlier this month that the four-hour, two part film depicts both Ronald Reagan and his wife, Nancy, in a largely unflattering light while omitting much of what supporters see as his key achievements.

According to The Times, the movie dwells on Reagan's shortcomings, such as his moments of forgetfulness, painting him as contemptuous of gays and AIDS victims.

Nancy Reagan, meanwhile, is cast as a control freak with considerable sway over White House policies, even setting her husband's schedule according to the advice of astrologers.

Move Into the '70s

Oldies Radio

One of the surest ways to feel older is to listen to the radio and hear songs from your childhood — or, even worse, your adulthood — described as "oldies."

If over the years it seems those songs have gotten newer while you've gotten older, it's not your imagination. Oldies radio stations that once featured songs from the 1950s and '60s now play songs from the '70s.

So roll over Chuck Berry and make way for Fleetwood Mac. Your music hasn't lost its appeal to listeners. But advertisers? That's another story.

Advertisers covet the 25-to-54 age group. The first baby boomers — the generation born right after World War II and the primary audience for oldies music — are pushing 60.

Appreciates Spears' Honesty

Simon Cowell

Simon Cowell says he appreciates Britney Spears' honesty, even if the 21-year-old pop star did take a dig at him.

Spears recently had some advice for wannabe stars participating in the TV talent show "Pop Idol," the British counterpart of "American Idol." Both feature Cowell's often withering assessments of the hopefuls' singing abilities.

"I would take his advice and whatever he said and tell him to shove it," Spears told Britain's ITV television in an interview broadcast Monday.

In response, Cowell told the TV show "Extra" in an interview that aired Thursday: "I've got to be honest with you, the fact that she said that, I sort of like her more. It makes her more interesting. Britney is now a woman, not a girl. I like that."

ABC Special

Jesus

ABC News correspondent Elizabeth Vargas concedes her network is stepping into a theological minefield with its one-hour exploration of whether Jesus Christ had a wife.

The ABC News special, "Jesus, Mary and DaVinci," is scheduled to air Monday at 8 p.m. ET.

ABC screened the special for some reporters and religious leaders on Thursday. The program is based on the best-selling novel, "The DaVinci Code," which claims to be partly grounded on historical fact.

The book asserts that Mary Magdalene was Jesus' wife — not a prostitute, as in some teachings — and that she fled Jerusalem with his child following his crucifixion.

The story was kept alive for centuries by a secret society that included the painter Leonardo DaVinci, who supposedly inserted clues about it in his art, the book claimed.

The show drew criticism from Nikki Stephanopoulos, mother of ABC News correspondent George and the communications director for the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. She the special might offend people who believe that women have a more prominent role in the church.

South Philadelphia

Catholic High School Girls

A man described by authorities as a known sexual predator was chased through the streets of South Philadelphia by an angry crowd of Catholic high school girls, who kicked and punched him after he was tackled by neighbors, police said on Friday.

Rudy Susanto, 25, who had exposed himself to teen-age girls on as many as seven occasions outside St. Maria Goretti School, struck again on Thursday just as students were being dismissed, police said.

But this time, a group of girls in school uniforms angrily confronted Susanto with help from some neighbors, police said. When Susanto tried to run, more than 20 girls chased him down the block. Two men from the neighborhood caught him and the girls took their revenge.

"The girls came and started kicking him and punching him, so I wasn't going to stop them," neighbor Robert Lemons told The Philadelphia Inquirer.
