Another Side of the News
August marked the 35th Anniversary of Woodstock. We'll have a special 2 hour celebration this Saturday from 8 - 10am (PDT). The legendary Sweetwater was the first band to play Woodstock. We'll be joined by their singer Nancy Nevins who will discuss the VH1 hit movie of her life, "Sweetwater: A True Rock Story." She'll talk about being a white girl from Glendale touring with the first multi-cultural rock band. In 1968 & 69 that wasn't always easy.
Then personal tragedy struck and Nevins and Sweetwater were changed forever. In a near fatal car accident, she lost a vocal chord and doctors said she would never sing again. 5 years later she had a solo album. It bombed, she hit bottom with drugs and alcohol, and scraped herself up again. She started from scratch, got a masters in English, teaches at Glendale College, and about 9 years ago got back into music and the arts. She got the VH1 movie made about her life, did another tour and CD with Sweetwater, and is now working on a 1 woman musical theatre show. Nancy will also perform live, accompanying herself on acoustic guitar and electric keyboard.
Woodstock was the defining moment of a generation. We'll discuss how it summarized what came before and was the focal point of what happened after. Tune in early. We'll play Sweetwater music from 7 - 8am to get us in the mood for this very special 2 hour program from 8am - 10am this Saturday.

Starting to get a bit warmer.
We drive by the local Halliburton outpost on our way to the farmer's market. There's a large banner out front announcing that they're hiring.
Have finally puzzled out how to upload a whole page - the next trick will be figuring out how to archive them...ack.

Joining 'West Wing'
Jimmy Smits
Actor Jimmy Smits, best known for his turns as a lawyer on "L.A. Law" and a cop on "NYPD Blue," will join the cast of "The West Wing" as a Houston congressman with presidential aspirations, NBC said on Friday.
The fictional president on the show, Josiah Bartlet, played by Martin Sheen, is well into his second term, and the Hollywood showbiz papers have suggested that Smits may be a potential replacement in that role.

Scotty Says Goodbye
James Doohan
Once, James Doohan worked the Star Trek fan circuit 50 weekends a year--no convention or college campus too remote for the franchise's indefatigable Scotty.
This weekend, Doohan, 84 and slowed by the diseases of Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and diabetes, will say goodbye. To the conventions, to the fans--though not the affection.
"Beam Me Up Scotty...One Last Time" is the quite-serious title to a three-day event at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel billed as a farewell to the actor who, as fiery Montgomery Scott, ran the U.S.S. Enterprise's engineering deck on Trek's 1966-69 flagship series and six big-screen adventures.
The fest opens with a party Friday night, before turning into a more conventional convention on Saturday and Sunday. A Doohan roast, benefiting Alzheimer's research, and featuring an appearance by Apollo astronaut Neil Armstrong, is set for Saturday night.
Doohan, whose family disclosed his battle with Alzheimer's in July, was said to be unavailable for interviews to talk about the event, which dovetails with Tuesday's scheduled unveiling of his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. But wife Wende says "he's totally aware of it--totally looking forward to it."
As such, Doohan is set to attend. And in a show of intergalactic unity, so are his sometimes-fractious crew mates: William Shatner (Captain Kirk), Leonard Nimoy (Mr. Spock), Nichelle Nichols (Lt. Uhura), Walter Koenig (Ensign Chekov), George Takei (Lt. Sulu), Grace Lee Whitney (Yeoman Rand) and Majel Barrett Roddenberry (Nurse Chapel, as well as creator Gene Roddenberry's widow).

New York Taxi Boss Apologizes
Mike Wallace
Veteran TV newsman Mike Wallace received an apology from the New York taxi commission over his arrest for disorderly conduct earlier this month after an argument with inspectors, officials said on Friday.
Taxi and Limousine Commission spokesman Allan Fromberg said on Friday the inspectors who arrested Wallace used "poor judgment" when they handcuffed him and took him to a police station to charge him with disorderly conduct.
Fromberg said the inspectors have been placed on desk duty, issued warnings and would be retrained by supervisors.

Wins Cybersquatting Case
Spike Lee
Movie director Spike Lee has won his cybersquatting case against a Philippines-based operator who misused the domain name, spikelee.com, to redirect surfers to a pornographic Web site, arbitrators ruled Friday.
Lee filed the complaint against Mercedita Kyamko of the Philippines who registered the domain name in 1999, the World Intellectual Property Organization said.
It forwards users to a pornographic Web site located at clubhongkong.com, and was registered in "bad faith," according to Canadian lawyer Edward Chiasson, the neutral arbitrator named by WIPO to rule on the dispute.

$21,000 Fine
Bruce Willis
Actor Bruce Willis will pay a $21,000 fine for violating federal wetlands protection laws by clearing a half-acre island in a pond at his central Idaho home.
Willis was cited last October for clearing the small island, installing a sprinkler system, and adding topsoil to level depressions so sod could be laid. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency officials claimed he also dumped 10 cubic yards of fill material in a stream to provide access to the island.
The wetlands had been part of a spring-fed tributary of the Big Wood River.
Under the settlement, the island will be replanted and its wetlands character restored by Oct. 31. The site will then be monitored for the next decade.

PETA Protests
Cindy Crawford
A major US animal rights group launched a public protest against supermodel Cindy Crawford, who it accuses of being a turncoat in the battle against the use of furs in fashion.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) planned a protest later Thursday against the US beauty outside a Hollywood bar owned by her husband Rande Gerber to draw attention to Crawford's alleged betrayal.
The group is furious that Crawford, 38, who once formed part of PETA's public campaign against the fur trade, has signed on to appear in a fur-trade advertising blitz later this year.

Tourists Seek Key
'Da Vinci Code'
A funny thing happened on the way to the Mona Lisa. Visitors to the Louvre museum in Paris, home of the world's most famous painting, started quizzing tour guides about Dan Brown's best-selling novel "The Da Vinci Code".
Visitors clutching dog-eared copies of the book have poured into the Louvre and the church of Saint Sulpice on the trendy Left Bank, home to the brass meridian marker and stone obelisk that play a key role in the novel's search for the Holy Grail.
Tourist guides were quick to catch on. They now offer tours exploring the book's locations and the theories surrounding Leonardo's works of art such as the enigmatic Mona Lisa.

Extortion Attempt - Dr Seuss's Widow
Audrey Geisel
A man tried to extort the widow of legendary US children's author known as "Dr Seuss" by threatening to circulate a painting of his famous characters engaged in sexual acts, police documents showed.
In a bizarre case, Charles Augustus Steen, 33, was sentenced to three years probation and ordered to undergo anger management classes after pleading guilty to attempting to extort 2.5 million dollars from Theodor Geisel's widow, according to court records.
Steen demanded cash from Audrey Geisel, who lives in San Diego, California, in return for not making public a painting he did depicting the Seuss characters engaged in "sexual behavior," documents from San Diego police showed.
In a series of threatening e-mails sent last July and August to 83-year-old Audrey Geisel and her lawyers, he also demanded cash compensation for a Dr Seuss story he claimed was plagiarised from his own work.
Steen threatened to write a book that would be titled "The tragical history of Audrey Geisel, or How the Grinch Plagiarized My Goddam Children's Story" if he did not receive a 2.5 million dollar payment, the document said.

Performing At Party For Episode 3
One Man Star Wars
At last count, Charles Ross had seen Star Wars 474 times.
After taping over his dad's Shogun tape in the early 1980s, he watched the George Lucas classic on video every morning before his parents woke up. He could recite every line from memory, sing each refrain of the closing credits and, like most little sci-fi fanatics, could imitate the sounds of light sabres, star fighters and Wookies.
But instead of letting those thousands of hours become "negative time," the 30-year-old from Prince George, B.C., decided to turn his love for the classic science-fiction trilogy into a frenetic one-man homage that has sold out shows across Canada and the United States.
And now, the actor trained at the University of Victoria and self-described "nerd" is taking his hit play One Man Star Wars further than he had ever imagined - in front of an audience of thousands of hard-core fans at a four-day Lucas-Films-sponsored party in Indianapolis that will mark the April 2005 release of Revenge of the Sith, the final instalment of Lucas's epic.
