Re: F 911
F 911 finally made it to Charleston. You would never had known it was
here from the media reaction. Here that (sound of silence), that's the
media noise. I just happened to check our theater's web site and see it was
there. I took off from work early to make the matinee. I arrived 15 minutes
early primarily to get a good seeat so I could watch the reaction of the
other people.
Imagine my surprise when the older gentleman in the other
line and I said Fahrenheit 9/11 at the same time. By the time the show
started there were about 20 people in the theatre, chalk it up to a lack of
publicity and the fact that Kerry was in Beckley. I won't bore you with the
film's details but will describe what I saw around me.
The crowd was a distinctly older group, at a guess I would say average
about 65. We had one person who wasn't in tune. During the 9/11 sounds
sequence he kept saying, " What is this?" As if anyone could forget. A
couple of teenage girls had a quiet conversation going on but went dead
silent when the first bombs hit Iraq. There was a black couple who were
saying things like "Good point" and "I didn't know that". When the
soldier's mother broke down in front the White House I could here several
people crying. I was not sure how many as I was crying myself.
If you haven't seen it, DO SO! Michael Moore has made a case for
impeachment and prosecution of the ruling junta.

Another Side of the News
Kerry picks Edwards, gets all kinds of great press, and Ridge announces "a credible report" of a terror attack before the election. Now New Republic reports that Bush is pressuring Pakistan to deliver Osama before the election, preferably at the height of the Democratic Convention. We shall see.
The transparency of the fear-mongering is becoming slightly incredible!!
Also, the way the Corporate Media spins it. BTW..."Fahrenheit 9/11" "the anti-Bush film" (CNN, the most trusted blah, blah, blah) opened in France to huge ticket sales. Another $21 million in revenue for it's second week in the US.
Oh, and "Kenny Boy" Lay is indicted. The LA Times already reports he "didn't like hearing bad news or saying no to people.." In other words, he didn't know!! Give me a break!!!

Einstein, Picasso, and Bush
Einstein dies and goes to heaven. At the Pearly Gates, Saint Peter tells him, "You look like Einstein, but you have NO idea the lengths that some people will go to sneak into Heaven. Can you prove who you really are?"
Einstein ponders for a few seconds and asks, "Could I have a blackboard and some chalk?"
Saint Peter snaps his fingers and a blackboard and chalk instantly appear. Einstein proceeds to describe with arcane mathematics and symbols his theory of relativity.
Saint Peter is suitably impressed. "You really ARE Einstein!" he says. "Welcome to heaven!"
The next to arrive is Picasso. Once again, Saint Peter asks for credentials.
Picasso asks, "Mind if I use that blackboard and chalk?"
Saint Peter says, "Go ahead."
Picasso erases Einstein's equations and sketches a truly stunning mural with just a few strokes of chalk.
Saint Peter claps. "Surely you are the great artist you claim to be!" he says. "Come on in!"
Then Saint Peter looks up and sees George W. Bush. Saint Peter scratches his head and says, "Einstein and Picasso both managed to prove their identity. How can you prove yours?"
George W. looks bewildered and says, "Who are Einstein and Picasso?"
Saint Peter sighs and says, "Come on in, George."
Thanks, Bruce!

'NYPD 24-7'
A gritty documentary series about police that has filled the usual time slot for "NYPD Blue" has some viewers seeing red.
After only three episodes, the ABC News series "NYPD 24-7" has infuriated a firefighters union and annoyed New York Police Department officials. Even Mayor Michael Bloomberg has panned one policeman's performance.
Publicly, police officials have taken no position on the show, which was distilled from 16 months of footage shot by film crews who shadowed detectives and other officers with the nation's largest police department as they investigated murders and fought urban crime.

Denies Being Source for NY Post 'Scoop'
Rupert Murdoch
Rupert Murdoch, chief of News Corp. Ltd., on Friday denied he was the source for the New York Post's front-page "exclusive" that named U.S. Rep. Dick Gephardt as Democrat John Kerry's choice as his No. 2 in the November U.S. presidential election.
Murdoch told reporters at the Allen & Co. annual retreat for media executives in Sun Valley, Idaho, that he was not the one who telephoned in the tip, adding that he had occasionally called in items for its Page 6 gossip column. Murdoch, whose News Corp. owns the New York Post, also said he hadn't called in any items for several years.
The New York Times on Friday reported, citing unidentified sources, that Murdoch had called in the Gephardt tip late Monday evening.

Troubled rock star Courtney Love got a bench warrant for her 40th birthday after failing to appear Friday at her arraignment on an assault charge. Her lawyer said she was in the hospital in New York City.
"It is not a suicide attempt, not drug-related, not drug-overdose related," attorney Michael Rosenstein said. "It's a gynecological medical condition for which she is receiving treatment.
Earlier, Rosenstein had told a Los Angeles court Love was in New York City and confused about whether she was required to be in Los Angeles.
Court Commissioner Dennis E. Mulcahy said there was no excuse for her failure to appear. He said she forfeited her $55,000 bail and he set a new bail of $150,000.

Topless Video Hits Internet
Cameron Diaz
A 12-year-old, soft-core video of a topless Cameron Diaz has emerged on the internet, showing the "Charlie's Angels" star engaging in some light, but definitely un-angelic S and M play.
The footage of Diaz, who has since become one of Hollywood's highest-paid stars, was shot in 1992 by photographer John Rutter, who has been locked in a long legal battle with the actress over the material.
Diaz was 19 and trying to break through as a model when she made the video, in which she "walks" a leather-clad male model on a leash.

Another Accident Shuts Down Disneyland Ride
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
Disneyland's Big Thunder Mountain Railroad ride was closed indefinitely following an accident that sent three people to the hospital, authorities said Friday.
The roller coaster attraction had reopened in March, six months after a California man was killed when the open rail car in which he was riding crashed into the train's derailed locomotive. Ten other people were hurt in the September accident.
A 10-year-old boy and his parents, ages 42 and 44, were taken to a hospital for treatment of minor back and neck injuries, according to the Anaheim Fire Department.

Duel to Be Re-Enacted
Hamilton-Burr
With pistols at 10 paces, descendants of Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr will settle an old score this weekend.
But this time, it isn't personal.
Douglas Hamilton, a fifth-great-grandson of Hamilton, and Antonio Burr, a descendant of Burr's cousin, will re-enact the July, 11, 1804, duel that left Hamilton mortally wounded and a sitting vice president's reputation in the gutter.
More than 1,000 people are expected to attend Sunday morning's re-enactment near the Hudson River, about a quarter-mile west of the actual duel site, which no longer exists. Sixty descendants of Hamilton will attend, as will 40 members of the Aaron Burr Association.

Paint-By-Numbers Guru
Dan Robbins
Long before Elvis's face first hit black velvet, the guardians of all that is good and serious in American art had something else to bewail. This heresy was called paint-by-numbers, and Dan Robbins was its prophet.
Robbins created the first paint-by-numbers pictures in the late 1940s, then rode the craze through the boom years of the 1950s and the bust of the 1960s.
He was once embarrassed explaining what he did for a living when he met his old art teacher on the street, but Robbins can now look back on the paint-by-numbers phenomenon with pride.
The once-mocked paintings are a hot collectible on eBay, and Robbins, now 79, had the satisfaction of seeing his artworks - completed by others - hanging in the Smithsonian in 2001 and 2002. He even wrote a book on his creations, "Whatever Happened to Paint-by-Numbers."
For the rest of a fun read, Dan Robbins

Mistaking Asphalt for Lakes
Pelicans
More than 30 endangered brown pelicans have crashed onto sidewalks and roads in Arizona, mistaking the heat-induced shimmer of the paved surface for lakes and creeks.
"They try to land on the water, but it's asphalt and it's `Bam! That doesn't feel so good,'" said Sandy Cate, director of the Arizona Game and Fish Department's wildlife center at Adobe Mountain in north Phoenix.
During the past two weeks, the injured pelicans have been found from Yuma to Phoenix, the department said Thursday.

Jeff Smith
Jeff Smith, a white-bearded minister who became public television's popular "Frugal Gourmet" before a sex scandal ruined his career, has died, his business manager said Friday. He was 65.
Smith died in his sleep Wednesday, Jim Paddleford said. He had long suffered from heart disease and had a valve replaced in 1981.
In the 1960s, Smith, a United Methodist minister, began teaching a course at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma titled "Food as Sacrament and Celebration."
Eventually he got his own program on the local PBS affiliate - "Cooking Fish Creatively" - and his career took off with an appearance on Phil Donahue's talk show.
"The Frugal Gourmet" became the nation's most-watched cooking show, and a series of accompanying cookbooks broke sales records for the category.
But in 1997, seven men filed a lawsuit alleging they had been sexually abused by Smith as youths. Six said the abuse occurred while they worked for him at the Chaplain's Pantry, a restaurant he operated in Tacoma in the 1970s. The seventh alleged Smith abused him after picking him up as a hitchhiker in 1992.
Smith was soon off the air.
Smith denied the allegations and was never charged with a crime. He and his insurance companies paid an undisclosed sum to settle the lawsuit.
Smith is survived by his wife, Patricia, and two sons.
