The FCC
Since the FCC has decided that the 'f-word' is off-limits, I decided that I
needed a word that I could use on the occasions that the 'f-word' might be
needed but I don't want to risk a fine from the FCC.
The obvious solution is to replace the offending word with the name of the
agency that is offended. It's a FCC'ing great idea! Michael Powell won't
have to get his FCC'ing panties in a wad if Howard Stern used FCC instead of
that other word.

New Opera
'The Hobbit'
The Canadian Children's Opera Chorus is preparing for its premiere of The Hobbit in May. The group says this is the first operatic adaptation ever of the mythical story by J.R.R. Tolkien. "I feel that The Hobbit begs to be treated operatically," Toronto-based composer Dean Burry, who began writing music for the production three years ago, said in a statement. "It is a tale that truly sings."
Deborah Jeans, spokeswoman for the Canadian Children's Opera Chorus which commissioned the production, said the recent success of the Lord of the Rings film trilogy can only help the operatic version appeal to a wider audience.
Founded in 1968, the Canadian Children's Opera Chorus has commissioned numerous other operas for children, including The Star Child, The Snow Queen, A Midwinter Night's Dream and Dr. Canon's Cure. Its principal chorus consists of 80 girls and boys.

New 'Dr. Who'
Christopher Ecclestone
Respected British actor Christopher Ecclestone is to take on the title role of "Dr Who" when the cult science fiction television series returns to the screens next year.
Ecclestone will be the ninth incarnation of the time-travelling hero, who first appeared in 1963 in what became one of Britain's longest-running and most popular television shows, the BBC announced.
A new series of the programme, axed in 1989 amid anguished protests from science fiction fans, will be made by the BBC and screened in 2005, the corporation said in a statement.

Rockwalk Award Posthumously
Randy Rhoads
Randy Rhoads, the guitarist behind Ozzy Osbourne's most acclaimed solo work, was posthumously honored with a bronze bust on Hollywood's Rockwalk.
About 200 fans turned out to see the ceremony Thursday and hear from Osbourne himself, who praised Rhoads' virtuoso brand of heavy metal guitar playing.
Barely into his 20s, Rhoads left the hard rock band Quiet Riot in 1979 and joined Osbourne, who was forming a group after leaving his former band, Black Sabbath.
The dedication was timed to the 22nd anniversary of Rhoads' last public performance. He died in a 1982 plane crash in Florida at 25.

Knee Injury
Britney Spears

The singer hurt herself during a dance routine toward the end of her show Thursday night in Moline, Ill. Spears was singing one of her new songs, "Boom Boom," according to "Entertainment Tonight."
Minutes later, the syndicated television program reported, the 22-year-old pop star reappeared on stage in a white bathrobe and apologized to the audience for not being able to continue. She'd planned two more encore songs.

Replacing Lane & Broderick
'The Producers'
The producers of The Producers have found Broadway's new Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom - and they have gone back to performers who were in the musical's original cast.
Brad Oscar will replace Nathan Lane and Roger Bart takes over from Matthew Broderick after the two stars depart the Mel Brooks musical April 4. Oscar and Bart begin April 6.
Oscar originally played Nazi playwright Franz Liebkind and Bart the flamboyant personal assistant Carmen Ghia when the show opened in April 2001. Oscar also understudied Lane and frequently went on for the star, who was plagued by vocal problems during the first year of the musical's run.

Pleads Guilty
Paul 'Pee-wee Herman' Reubens
"Pee-wee Herman" actor Paul Reubens was sentenced to three years probation Friday after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor obscenity charge involving photographs seized from his erotica collection.
The former star of the "Pee-wee's Playhouse" children's TV show and two "Pee-wee" movies won't be allowed unsupervised contact with minors during the probation period. He also agreed to pay a $100 fine, enter counseling for a year, and agreed to register as a sex offender for the duration of his probation.
Prosecutors dismissed a misdemeanor charge of child pornography stemming from a search of Reubens' home in November 2001 in which police seized about 30,000 images from his photography collection and personal computers.

New Job Created
'Entertainment Liaison'
The Homeland Security Department has posted a job for a "liaison to the entertainment industry." The salary could be as high as $136,000, plus benefits.
The department is creating the job to make sure that dramatic portrayals of it are as accurate as possible, spokesman Dennis Murphy said Friday.
In the past year, the department has been inundated with requests for help on motion pictures and documentaries, said spokeswoman Tasia Scolinos.
Movies and TV shows could be important recruiting tools for people considering a career in Homeland Security, she said.

Book on Life's Lessons Delayed a Year
Michael Eisner
A new book by embattled Walt Disney Co. Chief Executive Michael Eisner on the lessons about life he learned at summer camp has been delayed for about a year, publisher Warner Books said on Friday, adding that the book will be out for Father's Day 2005.
Warner decided five days after Disney's contentious annual meeting, at which Eisner's reelection to the board was opposed by 43 percent of votes, that the plan for a Father's Day 2004 launch should be postponed, probably for a year.
Warner promised to publish the book no matter what happens in the saga with Disney and Eisner, who will donate his earnings from the book to charity.

Search Abandoned
Dominick Arduin
Rescuers combing the Russian Arctic for Finnish-French North Pole adventurer Dominick Arduin, who is presumed dead, found no sign of her during a final sweep of the area.
"The helicopters searched today for a final time the area where we expected she would be, but found no sign of her," said Christian de Marliave of the Paris-based firm Cerpolex that is organizing and funding the rescue operation.
After searching for two full days with a heat-detecting infrared camera in a last-ditch attempt to locate her, the two helicopters flew back to their base in northern Russia at dusk on Friday and formally ended the search, he said.
"We will search for her no more," de Marliave said.
