Rev. Greeley on "Hardball"
I've always liked this guy. He deals in reality.
He talked about celibacy and said he can't see any family man getting
into the priesthood with the mess the Church is in now with the
molestation charges, etc.
He told Chris (The Screamer) Matthews that he saw Mel Gibson's
cinematic ego trip and called it "sado-maschochistic and
pornographic." Didn't care for it at all.
Thought "The Greatest Story Ever Told" was far superior. He said he
didn't find the actor in "Passion" Christ-like at all.
He also disliked the way Jews were portrayed in "a very offensive,
stereotypical matter."
Matthews remarked that he attended Catholic schools and read the
bible and "I never saw anywhere that Pilate was this cuddly, smiling
guy that Gibson's film portrayed him to be." Greeley agreed
wholeheartedly, with a look on his face that said "Tell me about it."
Rev. Greeley also found it "curious" that the line "Forgive them,
Father, for they know not what they do" was omitted from the film.
He and Matthews DID like the actress who played Mary, though.

In The Chaos Household
Last Night
Sunny with an afternoon breeze.
The kid & I visited the local grocery store for the first time in 5 months.
The store was being remodeled when the strike started, and the work is now completed. What a crappy 'improvement'!
I know after-hour bars with better lighting than the produce section - guess they didn't want anyone noticing how old & tired their vegetables were.
What meat they had was heavily discounted - spencer steaks or boneless rump roasts for 99¢/lb.
Some of the regular bagboys weren't there - they've been laid off, and one of the 'new' bagboys used to be a meatcutter.
It seems that because of 'consolidation' in the food industry a serious strike is only an annoyance to the corporate masters - Safeway whined because they lost 2 million a week here, but could still float merrily along from their stores in other states.
Did anyone watch 'NOW With Bill Moyers (& David Brancaccio)'? One segment was on the stifling of dissent and infiltration. Damn fine TV!

Hollywood 'Stereotypes Violence to Women'
Patrick Stewart
"The entertainment industry has been extremely irresponsible in perpetuating and stereotyping the violent attitudes of men to women," said Star Trek actor Patrick Stewart at the launch of an Amnesty International campaign against attacks on women.
"I condemn utterly films like 'Kill Bill.' We are told it is about empowering women. All it does is empower a woman to kill other women," he told reporters.
Stewart, who played Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek, came close to tears at times when he talked of his own experiences as a child. He said he had been degraded as he heard and watched his father's descent into alcohol-fueled violence against his mother, and disgusted as the people around them simply turned a blind eye.
"I saw society -- police, doctors and neighbors -- conspire to hide the abuse," he said. "Violence against women diminishes us all. If you fail to raise your hand in protest you are part of the problem."

Dustin Hoffman
The graduate is learning Italian, but not the best of Dante. Dustin Hoffman's appearance Thursday night at the annual San Remo Song Festival, a TV show that draws millions of spectators, proved to be a shocker when the American actor tried out some four-letter words and bathroom expressions.
The show on RAI state television depends on guest stars to boost the ratings amid the often mediocre music. Hoffman's dialogue caught the emcee by surprise and contrasted with the mood of what was to have been a sentimental reunion with Italian actress Stefania Sandrelli -- their first meeting since appearing in a movie together in 1972.
"You said a lot of profanity. Who taught you?" emcee Simona Ventura asked.

Auctioning Off 56 Guitars
Eric Clapton
Rocker Eric Clapton will auction off 56 guitars from his collection on June 24 at Christie's in New York, the auction house said.
The proceeds from the sale will go to the Crossroads Centre in Antigua, which helps people wrestling with chemical dependency.
Among the items up for bids is the legendary "Blackie," a circa-1956 composite Fender Stratocaster, which Clapton says "has become a part of me."
Estimated at between 100,000 and 150,000 dollars, it is one of a kind, as Clapton assembled it himself from the components of three different Stratocasters bought in Nashville in 1970.

On MSNBC, reporter Dawn Frantagelo reported that Stewart was found not guilty on the first charge against her. A graphic with the incorrect information was flashed for six seconds before being taken down.

Woman With An Opinion
Jane Goodall
The 69-year-old lady in a black turtleneck sweater peered from behind the lectern at a crowd of 250 people and greeted these strangers with the call she learned while studying chimpanzees for more than 40 years.
"Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh, OOOH OOOH OOOOOOH!" Jane Goodall cried to the audience recently at the Discovery Communications Inc headquarters in this Washington suburb, minutes before showing a snippet of her latest documentary.
Surprisingly, the gray-haired, soft-spoken British dame -- Queen Elizabeth II made her a Dame of the British Empire -- insists she used to be a terribly shy person.
But she overcame her shyness and sacrificed her privacy to fight for the protection of Africa's wildlife.
"We are up against such powerful forces who are trying to destroy the world," said Goodall, who will turn 70 next month.

Teacher Suspended
An elementary school teacher was suspended this week after school officials learned that he showed students excerpts from the movie "The Passion of the Christ."
Ronald Anthony, who teaches at Malcolm X Elementary School, was placed on paid leave while investigators look into the incident, Elfreda Massie, the interim superintendent for District of Columbia Public Schools, said Friday.
Massie said Anthony acknowledged showing some of his sixth-grade students portions of the R-rated film on Tuesday. The movie depicts the crucifixion of Jesus and includes violent scenes. At least 16 students are believed to have seen portions of the film, Massie told The Associated Press.
School officials also said they are looking into how Anthony obtained a copy of the film, which has not been released on video.

Taking On New Jobs
Ahnold
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has accepted a new role for his busy schedule, that of executive editor of "Muscle & Fitness" and "Flex" magazines, his spokesman said on Friday.
The former Mr. Universe, who took office in November with California engulfed in fiscal crisis, will officially announce his new job on Saturday when he attends the annual Arnold Fitness Weekend in Columbus, Ohio, said spokesman Rob Stutzman.
American Media, Inc., which owns the magazines, also publishes tabloids like the National Enquirer, but Stutzman said he was not aware of any deal for those publications to go easy on the governor.

Not Allowed to Return to U.S.
Amish Man
An Amish man who visited his ailing father in Canada has not been allowed to return because of border security aimed at thwarting terrorists. The man, adhering to the Bible's prohibition of graven images, has no photo identification.
According to officials in Licking Township, a municipality of 475 people midway between Pittsburgh and the New York border, U.S. officials told the man photo waivers once granted the Amish have been cut off due to security concerns.
Canadian border guards allowed the man into the country to visit his father in Ontario just before Christmas; the United States has prevented his return. The man's wife and child remain in the United States.
The border policy was altered when the Department of Homeland Security absorbed the Immigration and Naturalization Service, said attorney Mark Knapp of the international law firm Reed Smith, which took on the case Friday.

Students Given Chance to Learn
'Elvish'
It's central England, not Middle Earth, but one school is offering its pupils the chance to learn Elvish.
Youngsters at Turves Green Boys' Technology College in Birmingham are being offered weekly after-hours lessons in Sindarin, a conversational form of Elvish invented by "Lord of the Rings" creator J.R.R. Tolkien and based on Welsh sounds.
Tolkien was an expert in ancient languages who had developed two forms of Elvish.
Sindarin was based on Welsh sounds and was the more commonly used, while Quenya, which related to Finnish, was largely a ceremonial language.

Stephen Sprouse
Stephen Sprouse, a fashion designer and artist who mixed a cosmopolitan, punk and pop styles, died Thursday of heart failure at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center. He was 50.
Sprouse's style mixed the polar worlds of uptown and downtown fashion and became known as a kind of "punk couture," said Simon Doonan, creative director of Barneys New York.
He was known for his edgy look that was popular with punk rockers but was also fashionable for the well-to-do chic crowd.
Sprouse started designing clothes at age nine and by the time he was 12, he had met fashion industry heavyweights like Bill Blass, Geoffrey Beene and Norman Norell.
As a teenager, Sprouse sketched for Blass and then Halston before coming to New York and eventually designing clothes for Blondie lead singer Debbie Harry.

Broccoli, who was also a theatrical producer, died of cancer Sunday at her home in Beverly Hills, Calif. A service for Broccoli was held Thursday at the Church of the Hills at Forest Lawn in Los Angeles, church spokeswoman Margerita Fayad said.
Danjaq, the film company that Cubby Broccoli and Harry Saltzman founded in 1961, bought the film rights to Fleming's Bond novels.
Dana Broccoli also was the creative force behind turning Chitty Chitty Bang Bang into a musical, for which she served as lead producer. The musical opened in London's West End in 2002 and is scheduled to open on Broadway in spring 2005.
When Cubby Broccoli was searching for the actor to play Bond, he asked his wife's opinion of a young actor, Sean Connery, who had impressed him.
"He phoned me and asked, 'Can you come here? I think I've found the guy, but I don't know if he has sex appeal,' " Dana Broccoli once recalled in a Los Angeles Times interview. "I went and watched . . . and I said, 'He's fantastic.' "
