Re: Howard Stern & Clear Channel
Interesting that Clear Channel dropped Stern two days after he came out against Bush. I guess Bush's didn't mind when Howard was supporting the war, but now that he's against Bush they drop him like a bad habbit.
-=Jeff
Thanks, Jeff!
Clear Channel has enjoyed a 'special' relationship with this White House.
But, remember, Howard was only syndicated on 6 (of over 1200) stations Clear Channel owns.
Their timing is suspicious & reeks of grandstanding.
Clear Channel's stock-in-trade is hate-mongering angry white men like Pigboy - but, they're willing to sacrifice Howard (on only 6 channels) - at least temporarily.
Weirdly, Pigboy & Howard share the same birthday.
Oscar Predictions
from that Mad Cat, JD
Hi Marty.
Here're my predictions:
SUPPORTING ACTOR: Alec Baldwin, 'The Cooler'
SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Shohreh Aghdashloo, 'House Of Sand & Fog'
ACTOR: Sean Penn, 'Mystic River'
ACTRESS: Charlize Theron, 'Monster' (There is no God if she
doesn't win the Oscar. A spectacular performance.)
DIRECTOR: Peter Jackson, 'Lord Of The Rings'
PICTURE: 'Lord Of The Rings'
I'm disappointed that 'American Splendor' was not nominated for anything. It was my favorite film last year.
All in all, it was a good year for movies and 'Lord Of The Rings,' as a body of work, deserves the Oscar™.
JD
Thanks, JD!

Re: Reader Rant
Hi Marty,
I must take exception to the hateful, bigoted and misinformed rant by Michelle V. I am a 'believer', yet not a churchgoer. I abhor the same type of behavior of the 'religious right' as displayed by Michelle did in her rant.
I do not plan to see Gibson's film, either. My beliefs are mine alone. I do not push them on others, nor expect them to conform to them unlike persons such as Michelle who labeled 'believers' as she did. How very sad both groups are this way. Whatever happened to 'live and let live'? Tyranny knows no political exclusiveness.
- Robert A
p.s. She is absolutely wrong when she said that ALL mass murderers have used religion to justify their crimes. Lenin and Stalin did not on their way to murder millions of their own people. Strange how many liberals seem to forget that...
Thanks, Robert!
Nobody stirs things up like Michelle. : )
She's a believer in science, an Atheist's Atheist and an old pal.
And quite bluntly spoken.
Anyway, as Lenin (& Marx) succinctly phrased it, 'religion is the opiate of the people.' Didn't Stalin & Hitler (& Mao & Pol Pot) replace traditional religion with themselves and/or the state, and then go on to murder millions of their own people?
Regardless, I think we all would agree that Mel Gibson has made a profitable religious snuff film and more will follow.
Dona nobis pacem.

Re: Cialis Advertising
"Though rare, erections lasting more than 4 hours need immediate medical attention."
I'd say...... if they'd had proper "attention" during that 4 hours, a doctor would not be needed to bring it down, honey...
And what would be the procedure? Vivid imagining of being married to Kathie Lee Gifford? Indigo Girls singing while viewing nude pics of Buddy Ebsen? A Jenna Elfman encounter session?
And is not a commercial like that during the evening news as obscene as the flash of Janet Jackson's tit?

Thanks, Gare!
The Cialis commercial ran (at least) 4 times during the Super Bowl - but, they fixated on poor Janet's nipple.

Doonesbury's Bush Contest
No Winner Yet
A $10,000 reward offered by the "Doonesbury" comic strip for proof that resident Bush served in the Alabama National Guard during the Vietnam War has elicited over 1,300 responses but turned up no credible evidence yet, the cartoonist said on Friday.
With so much controversy surrounding Bush's National Guard service, a credible witness would have turned up by now if there was one, said Garry Trudeau.
Trudeau also said he doubted proof of Bush's service -- or lack thereof -- would affect his support in the November presidential election. "For me, stunt cartooning is mostly about keeping busy. If it tips a national election, well, that's just gravy," he said.
He said he planned to pay the $10,000 from his own money.
"What else am I going to do with a huge tax cut I didn't need? One of the unintended consequences of Mr. Bush's generosity toward the Great Un-needy is that I'm now a fat cat," he joked.

Takes Aim at 'Aeon Flux'
Charlize Theron
Making a giant leap from playing a serial killer in "Monster," Oscar nominee Charlize Theron could next find herself playing a futuristic assassin in a film based on the MTV cartoon series "Aeon Flux."
Created by Peter Chung, the MTV series revolved around a killer known for her extreme style, cool attitude, tight clothes and propensity for dying. The Paramount feature is targeting a June start. Karyn Kusama ("Girlfight") will direct.

Aaron Brown
CNN's Aaron Brown took a step into political activism this week, saying it was "unconscionable and indefensible" for House leadership to deny an extension to the Sept. 11 commission.
Brown urged viewers Thursday night to protest the decision — less than 24 hours before House Speaker Dennis Hastert agreed to give the independent panel investigating the attacks an extra two months to finish its report.
"Perhaps the speaker and his team assume you do not care," Brown said. "I hope they're wrong. I hope you care enough to write them and e-mail them and call them until they relent. Do that. Do it for the victims and their families. Do it for the country that was attacked and for history."

Dennis Miller
Dennis Miller is taking a two-week hiatus from his new CNBC talk show - which is being remade while he's gone.
"The main thing we're going to do differently is to have a studio audience," consulting producer Steve Friedman told The Post. "We're not doing the 'Tonight Show' - we want it more like a nightclub, and we're looking at an audience of around 100 people a day." Miller has, thus far, worked without a studio audience - relying only on laughs from his crew.
Friedman was brought in recently to consult on "Dennis Miller," which has averaged 303,000 viewers (9 p.m.) on CNBC since premiering Jan. 26 - up 131 percent over the timeslot's fourth quarter '03 average. "They were planning on bringing somebody in, and it happened to be me," said Friedman, who formerly oversaw CBS' "The Early Show" and spent years at NBC's "Today" show before that.

76th Birthday
Fats Domino
Fats Domino found his thrill on his 76th birthday, as friends and family members came by his home bearing gifts.
He was born Antoine Domino on Feb. 26, 1928, in New Orleans. On Thursday, he reminisced about the days before his 1950 recording of "The Fat Man," often called the first real rock 'n' roll record.
Domino has sold more than 110 million records. His legendary recording career produced 22 million-selling singles, including "Blueberry Hill" and "Ain't That A Shame," and he was one of the first 10 honorees named to the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame.

Prosecutors Drop 7 Charges
R. Kelly
Prosecutors dropped seven of 21 charges against R&B singer R. Kelly in his child pornography case, in what they described as a routine pretrial move Friday.
Kelly was arrested in June 2002 after a videotape surfaced allegedly showing him having sex with an underage girl. He remains charged with 14 counts of child pornography, and has pleaded innocent.
The seven counts dropped involved charges of soliciting a minor to appear in child pornography, said Jerry Lawrence, spokesman for the Cook County state's attorney's office.

Sentenced to 60 Days
Bobby Brown
Bobby Brown, arrested two months ago for allegedly striking wife Whitney Houston, was sentenced to 60 days in jail Friday for violating his probation.
The 35-year-old R&B singer had been accused of five violations including a December misdemeanor battery charge in which police said Brown hit Houston, leaving her with a bruised cheek and a cut inside her lip. He's scheduled to appear May 5 in a Fulton County court on that charge.
The other violations involve failing to take drug tests and pay probation fees. Brown also had been accused of failing to prove that he underwent counseling, completed his house arrest and fulfilled other obligations.
On Friday, Brown was able to show he'd paid the $105 fees, had gone to counseling and had completed his community service. That was enough for State Court Judge Wayne Purdom to cut his sentence in half, from 120 days to 60 days.

New Terrorism TV Series
In what would be a highly unusual action for a resident, George W. Bush is apparently giving the White House seal of approval to a television series, D.H.S.--The Series, a drama about the Department of Home Security being introduced Thursday night to prospective networks at an Industry gathering.
Resident Bush and Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge both "endorse and contribute sound bites to the introductions of the series," according to the show's producers.
Though the series' theme relates to the President's agenda on national security and international terrorism, it is virtually unprecedented for the White House to endorse such a fictional representation. It is unclear what input or relation if any the resident or the real DHS would have with the show in the future.
DHS, a multimillion-dollar episodic series, will explore the inner workings of the Department of Homeland Security, teaming the FBI, CIA, Secret Service, and National Security Administration (NSA) together with "first responders" such as local police, fire and safety administrators.

Fantasy Records
Fantasy Records, known for a strong catalog that includes Creedence Clearwater Revival and many jazz and soul greats, is on the market.
An investment banker is shopping the closely held independent label, sources familiar with the situation say. They also note that the auction process is heading into the due-diligence phase.
While Fantasy owners, led by label chairman Saul Zaentz, are believed to be asking for about $100 million, sources say the offers will likely range from $65 million to $85 million, depending on what the 2003 fiscal results show.

Barred From Miss Universe Pageant
Chen Lili
A Chinese transsexual has been barred from competing in the 2004 Miss Universe competition because she was born a man, organisers said.
Chen Lili, a 24-year-old fashion model from China's southwestern Sichuan province, would have been the first transgendered woman to vie for the title.
Chen underwent transsexual surgery in November and made headlines in local papers last month when she won official approval to change her sex on identity papers.
Transsexuals have ceased to be taboo in urban China in recent years, and a total of 500 Chinese men have so far had their sex changed surgically, according to previous reports in China's state media.

A.C. Reed
Blues saxophonist A.C. Reed, who combined a simple, eloquent style of play with an offbeat sense of humor and performed with the likes of Bonnie Raitt and Stevie Ray Vaughan, has died. He was 77.
Reed, whose songs tended to mock the music industry and often had humorous titles, such as "I'm in the Wrong Business" and "I Am Fed Up With This Music," died Wednesday of complications from cancer, Alligator Records spokesman Marc Lipkin confirmed Friday. He performed until two months before his death.
Born Aaron Corthen, Reed was raised in southern Illinois and moved to Chicago during World War II to work at a steel mill. He bought a saxophone at a pawn shop with his first paycheck and studied at the Chicago Conservatory of Music, according to officials of Alligator Records, the company Reed worked with for 25 years.
Reed toured with the late Earl Hooker and Dennis "Long Man" Binder in the 1950s, collaborated with Buddy Guy and the late Junior Wells in the 1960s and joined the Rolling Stones tour in 1970. He began fronting his own band in the 1980s.

John Randolph
John Randolph, a prolific, Tony-winning character actor who played Roseanne's father in Roseanne and Tom Hanks's grandfather in You've Got Mail, has died. He was 88.
Randolph died Tuesday at his home in Hollywood, his family said. Though his film career was hobbled in the 1950s because of the blacklist, he chalked up dozens of roles in later decades.
He played a police chief in 1973's Serpico, appeared in the 1974 TV movie The Missiles of October and was Roseanne's father in several episodes of Roseanne. His grandfather role in the 1998 You've Got Mail was one of his last.
In 1987, Randolph won a Tony Award for his role as a grandfather in Neil Simon's play Broadway Bound.
He was in the original New York stage productions of The Sound of Music, Paint Your Wagon and The Visit, and appeared in local plays until four years ago.
Born in New York City, Randolph described himself as an "old radical" and became politically active in the 1930s. He rallied for convicted spies Julius and Ethel Rosenberg and later marched with Martin Luther King.
He refused to answer questions when called before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1955 and was blacklisted from Hollywood for years, during which time he performed in plays in and around New York.
He is survived by two children, a granddaughter and a brother.
