Selling New Orleans Mansion
Anne Rice
Novelist Anne Rice, whose life and stories of vampires have become synonymous with New Orleans, is taking off for the suburbs as part of her goal of "simplifying my life."
A posting on Rice's website doesn't disclose where she'll be living, but the Times-Picayune, quoting unnamed friends and associates, reported Friday that her destination is a gated community in Jefferson Parish, a major suburb of New Orleans. Her Garden District mansion, the setting for her bestseller The Witching Hour, is up for sale, along with another New Orleans house where she lived as a child and which served as the setting for her novel Violin.
In her message, Rice said she originally had no intention of leaving New Orleans.
"But now that my husband, Stan, is gone, and my son, Christopher, has permanently settled on the West Coast, I find myself overwhelmed with the care of what was once such a delight," she said.

'Las Vegas' & 'American Dreams'
NBC has given an early pickup to dramas "Las Vegas" and "American Dreams" for next fall, giving both shows full-season, 22-episode orders.
In its first season, the James Caan-starring "Las Vegas" has averaged 12.3 million viewers and a 4.6 rating/11 share among adults 18-49, ranking as the highest-rated new drama this season in the key demographic.
In its second season, "American Dreams" has averaged 8.6 million viewers and a 3.2/8 in adults 18-49 in the Sunday 8 p.m. slot.
The news Thursday was not as good for ABC's freshman drama "Karen Sisco," as the network decided to pull the plug on the critically praised drama. After an underwhelming ratings start, the show was put on hiatus in November. Sources said the network was unhappy with the creative direction of the scripts and scrapped its plan to relaunch the show. A total of 10 episodes of have been produced with three still in the can.

Sydney Pollack Film
United Nations
The United Nations said on Thursday that a movie starring Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn would be made at U.N. headquarters in New York, where Hollywood has failed for decades to get permission to film.
The movie, to be directed by Sydney Pollack, is called "The Interpreter." Kidman would play a Kenyan-born U.N. translator who overhears an assassination plot, becomes a target herself and helps stop the killing of an African leader addressing the U.N. General Assembly.
Shashi Tharoor, the U.N. undersecretary-general for public affairs, said it was the first time in recent memory the world body, including Secretary-General Kofi Annan and the presidents of the Security Council and the General Assembly, had allowed a feature film to be made in the building.
The United Nations rejected Alfred Hitchcock's overtures to shoot part of the 1959 film "North by Northwest," which opened with scenes of U.N. lounges.

Original Film For Showtime
'Reefer Madness'
Showtime is lighting up "Reefer Madness," the off-Broadway musical satirizing the evils of marijuana, as an original film.
"Reefer" will reunite the creative team behind the stage version -- writers Kevin Murphy and Dan Studney and director Andy Fickman -- which won numerous awards and had an extended run at the Hudson Backstage Theater in Hollywood in 2000.
"Reefer" is a parody of the 1936 film that offered an overblown estimation of the dangers of marijuana usage. Future generations of college students came to enjoy the original for its unintentional comedic effect.

Show Canceled
Sharon Osbourne
Sharon Osbourne's attempts to strike out on her own have failed.
The wacky lady's daytime talker--featuring Ozzy's missus hosting in-bed interviews--has been axed by the Tribune stations, its main outlet.
No official statement has been issued by producers, but without the support of a major TV-station group, the show might as well be airing on local access.
Replacing The Sharon Osbourne Show will be an as-yet untitled Larry Elder vehicle.

Russell Crowe dislocated his shoulder in Sydney, Australia, while training for a boxing scene in his upcoming film "Cinderella Man," Universal Pictures said Friday.
He'll immediately undergo arthroscopic repair surgery followed by physical therapy, the studio added. That should delay the start of filming by about one month, from early March to April.

A rare mountain bongo leaps from a shipping crate after traveling from the United States to the slopes of Mountain Kenya, their natural habitat, on Friday, Jan. 30, 2004. Conservationist Don Hunt, originally from Detroit, Michigan, began work to preserve the species, which is found only in Kenya, in 1967. Over ten years he captured 20 bongos and shipped them to the United States to start a captive breeding program. The last bongo on Mount Kenya died in 1994 and now scientists hope to reintroduce them to the wild using breeding stock from the U.S. zoos and wildlife parks.

Attorneys Want Photos Banned
R. Kelly
Lawyers for R&B singer R. Kelly have asked a judge to suppress pictures found on a digital camera, saying they were seized during an illegal search.
The 37-year-old singer, whose real name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, is charged with 12 counts of child pornography. He is also awaiting trial on child pornography charges in Chicago.
Kelly's attorney, Ron Toward, argued prosecutors should not be allowed to use nude pictures found on a digital camera in the singer's Davenport home, about 35 miles southwest of Orlando.
Using a warrant to search for drugs, a Polk County Sheriff's detective found a camera, wrapped in a towel, inside a duffel bag.

Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize
Bush & Blair
Resident George W. Bush and Prime Minister Tony Blair are among nominees for the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize before a Sunday deadline for nominations despite failure to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.
"Nominations are pouring in," said Geir Lundestad, director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute. He said he gets letters and up to 1,500 e-mails a day from people either supporting or denouncing candidates.
Nobel watchers say Bush or Blair's chances of winning are close to nil. The 2002 prize went to ex-U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who argued against war. The head of the Nobel committee called the choice a "kick in the legs" to Bush on Iraq.

Official Wants to Replace 'Evolution'
Georgia
The state's school superintendent has proposed striking the word evolution from Georgia's science curriculum and replacing it with the phrase "biological changes over time."
Superintendent Kathy Cox said the concept of evolution would still be taught under the proposal, but the word would not be used in the curriculum. The proposal would not require schools to buy new textbooks omitting the word evolution and would not prevent teachers from using it.
Cox, a Republican elected to the post in 2002, repeatedly referred to evolution as a "buzzword" Thursday and said the ban was proposed, in part, to alleviate pressure on teachers in socially conservative areas where parents object to its teaching.
Former President Jimmy Carter had harsh words for the change on Friday, calling it an embarrassment and saying it exposes the state to nationwide ridicule.
"As a Christian, a trained engineer and scientist, and a professor at Emory University, I am embarrassed by Superintendent Kathy Cox's attempt to censor and distort the education of Georgia's students," Carter said in a statement.
