Kinky Friedman

By Baron Dave Romm

Kinky Friedman

A Texas Jewboy

Rumor has it that Kinky Friedman is George W. Bush's favorite Jew, but you should like him anyway. Richard "Kinky" Friedman has more than a dozen books out, writes a weekly column for the Texas Monthly (registration required) and has his own line of salsa. All the money from the salsa goes toward the Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch; other sponsors include Dwight Yoakam, Ruth Buzzi and Laura Bush.

I confess that I've never read his books or columns, have never sampled his salsa, and only have two of his CDs. Still, he's got a lot more going for him than his stint in Borneo for the Peace Corps. Kinky is unapologetic about being from Texas, being Jewish or being a man. Lots of songs about waitresses, small towns, travelling, lost loves and Judaism Texas-style.

The two CDs I have are Old Testaments & New Revelations by Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys and the tribute album Pearls in the Snow featuring many country stars. There is some overlap, but that's okay: Kinky's musical output is limited and his songs duplicate throughout his discography. You can order them all here.

Ride 'Em Jewboy may be the only Country song about the Holocaust. It's such a good country song that most goyim don't realize what he's singing about. "Don't let the morning blind ya, when on your sleeve you wore the yellow star. Old memories still live behind ya, can't you see by your outfit who you are." Kinky's version is good, and he treats the material like his other songs. Willie Nelson's cover leads off the tribute album; I think he understands. Don Imus treats the whole thing as a joke while introducing They Ain't Making Jews Like Jesus Anymore, and he may be right. "They ain't makin' Jews like Jesus anymore. They don't turn the other cheek the way they did before."

He puts his irascible southern sexism out front for everyone to see. "Women's liberation it's a going to your head, Get Your Biscuits In The Oven and Your Buns In The Bed". I leave it to the reader to decide if this is wisdom or wishful thinking. Meanwhile, a lady instructor turned him on to Anthropology and he sings the tender ballad Homo Erectus... Of course, he encourages women to be who they are while asking Why Do You Bob Your Nose, Girl? (aka Second Hand Nose).

The seamy side of Texas is explored, as befitting the genre. Kinky made his early reputation recounting The Ballad of Charles Whitman, the law student at the University of Texas who climbed the clock tower and opened fire. Kinky is proud to be an Asshole from El Paso, "a place where sweet young virgins are deflowered." Several songs deal with waitresses and cafes and life on the road.

The tribute album, Pearls In The Snow, features Willie Nelson, Dwight Yoakam, Asleep At The Wheel, Lyle Lovett and Tom Waits among many others. The songs are well produced, vs. the earthy renditions by Kinky himself. Most are pretty good, but sometimes only Kinky Friedman can do Kinky Friedman. He's represented on two tracks, one a medley of Kinky and the Texas Jewboys at the Grand Ol' Opry, and the other a well-bleeped rehearsal tape of Kinky and Little Jewford saying "Thank you very much" "You're welcome, Kinky." over and over until they get it right. A nice way to end the CD.

Kinky Friedman isn't as polished a performer as Rev. Billy C. Wirtz or as cutting a lyricist as Roy Zimmerman. He is what he is, and he's confident in his skin. Perhaps he's not for everyone. I hear his concerts are good. Time to start looking for his books.

Baron Dave Romm is a conceptual artist and a noble of Ladonia with a radio show, a very weird CD collection and an ever growing list of political links. He reviews things at random for obscure web sites. You can read all his music recommendations from Bartcop-E here, and you can hear the last two Shockwave broadcasts in Real Audio here (scroll down to Shockwave). Thanks to everyone who has sent me music to play on the air, and I'm collecting extra-weird stuff for a possible CD compilation.

Re: CNNNN LOL - HUH?

Hey Marty,

What's the hubbub about the link I sent being a porn search engine? Please explain if ya know. I ain't gonna send you a porn search engine to post for gosh sakes. I am sure your readers can find all of them they wish. If I send you something it's for you to look at and see if you think your readers might like it. I think that CNNNN page is as funny as anything I've ever seen. I am sorry if someone got transferred to a porn site, but I don't know how. Maybe they clicked on their 'favorites' by accident. If they would, please ask anyone who got a porn site to post it, was it a good'n? hehe

Did you ever get a chance to view the stuff at CNNNN? Funny, funny stuff.

We initiated the new cotton candy machine. It works, but it's noisy, and at 1 teaspoon of sugar at a time, it took a lot longer than anticipated.

Fox News Threatened to Sue The Simpsons

Matt Groening

During an interview broadcast on NPR's Fresh Air, Simpsons creator Matt Groening revealed that the Fox News Network had threatened to sue The Simpsons over a parody of the right-leaning news channel.

The highly sensitive news organization, which is headed by Roger Ailes, made headlines this summer with an ill-starred lawsuit against humorist Al Franken's book, Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them. The Fox suit was thrown out in court and only succeeded in making Franken's book a bestseller.

According to Groening, the Simpsons team refused to cut out the segment, which Groening told Fresh Air he "really liked," figuring that Rupert Murdoch wouldn't allow the Fox News cable network to sue the Fox Broadcast Network, which carries The Simpsons.

The Fox News Network did back down on its threat, although it has told The Simpsons creators that in the future, cartoon series will not be allowed to include a "news crawl" along the bottom of the screen, which might "confuse the viewers."

Mark Twain Prize for American Humor

Lily Tomlin

Comedian and actress Lily Tomlin was honored at a Washington ceremony on Sunday for making Americans laugh.

Tomlin was feted by entertainers Dave Chappelle, Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton at the Kennedy Center when she received its Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

Comedian George Lopez, another to honor Tomlin, remembered her appearances on "Laugh-In" when he was a child. "She (also) did some stuff with Richard Pryor that were among the best comedy moments ever," he said, describing her as a great comic who was very soulful.

New Season

'24'

"24" returns for a new season Tuesday at 9 p.m. EST on Fox. During this — the first of 24 episodes covering 24 hours of a single hectic day — counterterrorism agent Jack Bauer is right back where he belongs: In another jam to save the city of Los Angeles and environs. This time, bad guys are threatening to turn loose a highly contagious virus.

It's 1 p.m., three years after the assassination attempt against President Palmer (Dennis Haysbert with which last season ended. Palmer is OK — well, maybe — but Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) is already looking under the weather.

Further complicating Jack's day (on "24," everything happens at once) is daughter Kim (Elisha Cuthbert) as usual. She now works with Dad at CTU, where she's secretly betrothed to a handsome young colleague named Chase (newcomer James Badge Dale). As if Jack didn't already have his hands full, Kim picks today to tell him the big news.

Stablity a Thing of the Past

TV Schedules

Television schedules often seem written in disappearing ink, particularly around this time of year, so it's worth asking: Is the whole idea of stable lineups becoming obsolete in a hypercompetitive, multichannel world?

Already this season, NBC has blown up its struggling Friday night lineup, moved "Third Watch" from Monday to Friday and taken the touted comedy "Coupling" off the air with no inkling of when it will return.

Some of NBC's schedules, particularly for Fridays, are set week to week, leaving so much uncertainty that a Washington Post reporter trying to keep track wryly called it "cubist origami."

Over the past few years, broadcasters have been able to charge more for commercials even though fewer people are watching. Ratings are down again this season — particularly among young people — creating the prospect that networks will have to give refunds to advertisers.

450 Women

Spencer Tunick

The women crossed their arms to keep warm in the main concourse of Grand Central Terminal early Sunday as they prepared to pose for Spencer Tunick's latest human art installation. All 450 of them were nude.

The women, all volunteers, arrived at about 3 a.m. Sunday, stripped off their clothes and composed their bodies into sculptural shapes and formations meant to imitate streets, buildings and cityscapes. The building had been closed to the public during the shoot.

The current installation is part of the artist's "Naked World," in which he has been traveling the world, hoping to gather more than 35,000 people to pose.

Seeks New Judge in DUI Trial

Diana Ross

A lawyer for Diana Ross is asking that a new judge hear his request to toss out the breath test results expected to be used in the pop diva's drunken driving trial.

Lawyer Stephen Paul Barnard filed a petition requesting that another judge consider the motion to dismiss the breath tests.

Tucson City Magistrate T. Jay Cranshaw had previously dismissed Barnard's contentions that Ross had felt intimidated and coerced to take several breath tests, and allowed the results to be used at trial.

'Jimmy Kimmel' Loses Executive Producer

Daniel Kellison

After less than a year at the helm of ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live," executive producer Daniel Kellison is leaving the late-night talk show.

He will be replaced, at least temporarily, by Duncan Gray, the former British TV executive hired last November to work on ABC's alternative and specials offerings.

Kellison elected not to renew his contract, which is set to expire in January, according to an insider. He is said to want to move back to New York, where his ex-wife and child live. "Kimmel" is produced in Hollywood.

World Series Ratings

This year's World Series between the Florida Marlins and the New York Yankees finished as the third-lowest rated ever.

The six games posted an average national rating of 12.8 with a 22 share for Fox Sports. The only series with lower averages were the 2000 series when the Yankees beat the New York Mets in five games (12.4/21) and Anaheim's seven-game defeat of San Francisco last season (11.9/20), which was the lowest-rated ever.

Fox is in the third year of a $2.5 billion, six-year contract with baseball.

Taking Fight to Court

Rosie O'Donnell

Rosie O'Donnell and her ex-publishing partner were set to face off in a New York court this week in a much-hyped breach-of-contract battle following the messy demise of the entertainer's namesake magazine.

O'Donnell, known for her brashness and liberal views, was once dubbed the "Queen of Nice" by her fans. But former partner Gruner + Jahr USA Publishing says otherwise.

It charges that everything unraveled at the briefly popular but now defunct Rosie magazine when the comedienne shut down her daytime TV show in 2002 and went from being known as "fun-loving" to becoming a self-proclaimed "uber-bitch."

Returns to Egypt

Mummy

A children's choir and a military band greeted the return Sunday of what scholars believe is a royal mummy — possibly Ramses I — that was looted from a tomb and smuggled out of Egypt by a Canadian doctor nearly 150 years ago.

The Michael Carlos Museum at Emory University in Atlanta, which bought the mummy three years ago from a museum in Ontario, returned the relic after determining it may be the founder of the 19th Dynasty and grandfather of Ramses II.

Zahi Hawas, head of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, said it wasn't certain that the mummy is Ramses I, but the return was "a great, civilized gesture" by the museum.

Hawass ruled out the possibility of DNA tests, calling them unreliable. Egyptian antiquity officials have always rejected DNA tests on mummies of pharaohs, possibly fearing the tests could challenge established theories.

Bubble Gum

Keeping dentists busy since 1928, bubble gum celebrated its 75th anniversary on Saturday with enough sugar to keep kids hopping way past Halloween.

Created in 1928 by Walter Deimer, an accountant in Philadelphia, the perennial treat was pegged Dubble Bubble by its maker and sold by Fleer Gum Co., which owned the brand name. The first Dubble Bubble squares went on sale in 1937.

Its major competitor in the bubble gum business is Topps Co., which makes Bazooka bubble gum.
