Big Lies About 9/11
By Baron Dave Romm
Dittoheads have been in denial about Bush for a long time, and I've written on related topics before. As W's popularity plummets, his swaggering buffoonery replaces accountability. His supporters are fewer and fewer... and louder and louder. It's time to get in their face with their lies. Be as polite as possible, and don't sink to their level... but don't let them get away with changing the subject to Clinton or repeating the same lies they heard on hate radio. Here are some facts to use.
George W. Bush's first impulse is always to lie. His second impulse is always to run away. And he surrounds himself with oily people who are more concerned with smearing opponents than running the country. Right now, the shrill voices of the far right are engaged in a desperate attempt to blame Clinton for 9/11 and to completely cover-up Bush's criminal negligence and close ties to the bin Laden family.
To start off, we can easily dismiss the Republican whining.
If anyone says President Bill Clinton was not deeply concerned about terrorism and Osama bin Laden in particular, they are lying. Period. He successfully stopped terror operations in the US, and was doing well countering Al Queda until Bush and co. reversed his policies.
Meanwhile, Bush's foreign policy has been a disaster from the beginning and has just gotten worse. Bush started out his presidency by apologizing to China when they shot down our spy plane in international airspace, dismantling the Kyoto Treaty and others, then went on vacation when numerous sources including our own State Department warned of a terrorist attack.
Recap: Clinton did a good job, starting to counter a growing terrorist threat against the US. It wasn't perfect, but is was very good. Meanwhile, George W. Bush went out of his way to ignore the terrorist threat from his friends with oil money, and has been engaged in a cover up of his criminal negligence before 9/11 and his lying about the failed War on Terror and Gulf War II. His scandals are making diehard Republicans regret their vote. The shame of being a conservative has never been greater.
Baron Dave Romm is a conceptual artist and a noble of Ladonia with a radio show, a very weird CD collection and an ever growing list of political links. He reviews things at random for obscure web sites. You can read all his music recommendations from Bartcop-E here, and you can hear the last two Shockwave broadcasts in Real Audio here (scroll down to Shockwave). Thanks to everyone who has sent me music to play on the air, and I'm collecting extra-weird stuff for a possible CD compilation.
After The Storm
Hurricane Gumbo
After the power comes back, take the chicken bones that were in the freezer that you have to cook out and boil them with some water and onion, celery and carrot (if they survived the fridge smarm) for two hours. Take the (2 cups of) overripe tomatoes you were going to cook before the power outage (or a can thereof) and add to the broth. You might want to season at this time. If you are in a post- hurricane frame of mind you might just take that tin of Old Bay out and throw in a teaspoon or two (or three).
If you have bacon fry it in a pan, take the bacon out to drain on a paper plate on paper towels to allow the cats a little treat (hey - they survived the storm too! - take back some of the bacon for the gumbo.)
In the pan that you fried the bacon, cut up an onion and fry it. Throw in a couple of teaspoons of flour, this is your rue, so cook it a bit but don't let it burn. Hey, throw in about 3 bell peppers or the equivalent of mild peppers cut up that you had to drag out of the garden or bought on sale from the farmer's market. Hey throw in a hot pepper or two if you have them.
Here's the catch - if you bought or grew okra you need a pint. (In a pinch you can use that gumbo filet powder you can get at the seafood places, just remember not to add that until the Gumbo has finished cooking and is ready to serve)
If you have the okra, chop it up in 1/2 inch slices and add to the soup.
Now you probably have something in your freezer that should come out. What about those chicken breasts? That bag of frozen shrimp? Well if you have those things take them out of the freezer now. You can defrost the chicken in the micro, the shrimp you can take and defrost and take the shells off. If you are energetic, you can boil the shells in a little water and add that to the broth.
Also you should take a cup of rice and get it ready for the broth. I have basmati rice which needs soaking first, but whatever you have do what you do.
Your broth should be taking on a nice dark color and should smell really good. If it doesn't add some salt, pepper, Old Bay, or Cajun seasoning to give it some spicy flavor.
Okay now add the chicken and rice. Wait about 10 minutes and add the shrimp. Cook on low for five minutes and turn off for about a half an hour, 45 minutes, this is to let the flavors get happy with each other.
Serve in large bowls with crusty French bread that you bought from the store if you have it.
This goes well with red wine (that doesn't need refridgeration).

Thanks, Nancy

Leads Voter Registration Effort
Harry Belafonte
Harry Belafonte, lecturing at a community organizing workshop, told participants the only way out of poverty is through the voting booth.
"Voting is the most powerful weapon poor people have," the 76-year-old actor, singer and political activist said Saturday. "There are a lot more poor people than rich people. So if they'd all vote, we'd win every time."
Belafonte is a board member of the Washington-based Institute for Policy Studies, which plans a series of similar meetings statewide to encourage impoverished communities to participate in the national political debate leading up to the 2004 presidential election.

'Imagine'
Bill Clinton
Former US president Bill Clinton raised a cheer from hundreds of international dignitaries as he took to the stage to sing John Lennon's classic "Imagine" with a mixed group of Arab and Jewish children.
The former US leader looked somewhat taken aback as he was called to the stage and handed a microphone to perform alongside a teenage girl -- without even the benefit of lyrics to help him out.
The spectacle was just one of dozens of musical ensembles and show pieces put together for the opening gala evening for more than 400 statesmen and celebrities who had flown to Israel for the official celebrations marking the 80th birthday of Shimon Peres.
Among the guests were ex-Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, former South African president F.W De Clerk and a veritable Who's Who of the international diplomatic community, both present and former.

Former president Bill Clinton chats with students at the American University in Dubai after a question and answer session September 21, 2003. Clinton said Sunday that the U.S. should not try to dominate Iraq and needed to give the United Nations a greater role in restoring security to the war-torn country. 'We should play a role and spend a lot of money there, but we shouldn't dominate,' Clinton said.

Honored at Harlem's Apollo Theater
Gregory Hines
Stars from the worlds of theater, film and dance came out Sunday night to pay tribute to the late tap-dancing actor Gregory Hines at a festive memorial celebration at Harlem's Apollo Theater.
Fellow actress and dancer Debbie Allen said Hines' love of dance infused his entire body of work, from the stage to the screen.
"He was a wonderful, funny man, humorous and warm," said Isabella Rossellini, who played Hines' wife in the 1985 film "White Nights." "He didn't change on the set and off the set. There was an authenticity about him."
Actress Phylicia Rashad and Hines' older brother, Maurice Hines, co-hosted the tribute, which included performances by tap dancers and singers as well as video clips of Gregory Hines' performances.
A range of artists from Mikhail Baryshnikov to Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee came out for the tribute as did politicians such as Rep. Charles Rangel, D-Harlem.
"I brought him home," Maurice Hines told the Apollo crowd on Sunday, "because this is where we began."

Donates $168 Million
Bill Gates
The world's richest man donated $168 million to fight malaria Sunday, and urged the world to intensify its battle against a disease which kills more than one million people a year, mainly in Africa.
"It's time to treat Africa's malaria epidemic like the crisis it is," said Microsoft chairman Bill Gates during a visit to the southern African country of Mozambique.
Malaria is the biggest killer in Africa alongside HIV/AIDS, killing about 3,000 children a day and costing the world's poorest continent around $12 billion a year in lost income.

Touts Philadelphia Mayor in TV Ad
Bill Cosby
A new television campaign ad for Mayor John F. Street features actor Bill Cosby touting the mayor's accomplishments.
"Some politicians, they hug people and kiss babies," Cosby says in the 30-second spot. "Mayor Street — his way of kissing and hugging is to put more policemen on the streets."
Street campaign spokesman Dan Fee said he was unaware of Cosby ever being involved in a campaign before and said Cosby just wanted to help the incumbent Democrat.

Son Hits Back
Guillaume Depardieu
The son of Gerard Depardieu says his movie star father is a chronic liar obsessed with money and status, taking their public airing of grievances to a new level.
"Gerard Depardieu is a coward, a cheater and lazy," 32-year-old Guillaume Depardieu said in an interview published in Sunday's Le Parisien newspaper. "He's the only person I know who lies to his own analyst."
"Gerard Depardieu is obsessed the desire to be loved and the need for money," said Guillaume, who is also an actor. "The only thing we have in common is our demons."
The comments came in response to an interview published in last week's Paris Match magazine, where the elder Depardieu said he was no longer on speaking terms with his son.

Area 51
Invoking national security, resident Bush has renewed an exemption allowing the Air Force to keep mum about its top-secret operations at Groom Lake, also known as Area 51, in southern Nevada.
In renewing the order, Bush also cited the Nevada suits brought by injured workers and Helen Frost and Stella Kasza, widows of two men who worked at the military base.
In their 1994 lawsuits, Frost and Kasza alleged that their husbands were exposed to hazardous and toxic materials while working at Groom Lake, which sits along a dry lake bed in Lincoln County, about 90 miles north of Las Vegas. The area is in a no-fly zone and closed to the public.
Attorney Jonathan Turley, who represents the families, said the presidential directive keeps secret documents and testimony that he believes would link Area 51 to the men's deaths.
"It is baffling to see the government continue to cover up what went on at Area 51," said Turley, who is also a George Washington University law professor. "It is clear that there were criminal crimes and that government officials continue to resist any disclosure that would confirm such criminal content."

Fans Tap In
TV Shows Online
First music, then movies -- now Internet file traders have tuned in to television, going online to download their favorite shows.
Web sites like Suprnova.org (www.suprnova.org) are doing for TV downloads what Napster did for digital music files. You can find last night's episode of "American Idol," the entire collection of "The Simpsons," and old favorites like "Battlestar Galactica."
Such downloads, which may be on shaky legal ground, are popular outside the United States. This is especially true in Europe, where fans sometimes have to wait years to see the latest episodes of U.S. shows like "The West Wing" and "Six Feet Under."
TV shows have long been available from online file trading networks like Kazaa, but can take many hours or even days to download, with the longest wait times for the most popular programs.
But a "file swarming" program called BitTorrent can speed up the process. When you click on a link, BitTorrent downloads the TV show to your computer in fragments, which are simultaneously transferred to other users seeking to download the same show.

Norma Storch
Norma Storch, a white woman featured in a documentary on her choice to let her 4-year-old biracial daughter be raised by a black couple, died of cancer Aug. 28. She was 81.
The 1996 documentary, "Secret Daughter," was praised and criticized for the candid way it looked at race relations in the 1950s and 60s.
Storch's child, documentary producer June Cross - who made the documentary - would visit Storch and her husband, actor Larry Storch. The couple told others she was their adopted daughter who lived with a black couple most of the year.
The truth was the child was the result of an affair between Storch and Jimmy Cross, a performer from the song-and-dance team Stump and Stumpy. She later married Larry Storch.
June Cross spent summers with the couple, but the concocted story was always held up as true. All involved agreed that racial attitudes of the day made the story necessary.
June Cross went on to graduate Harvard University and become a successful television producer with both PBS and CBS.
"I think the truth of it is that she loved me enough to give me away," Cross said of her mother.
