This has been an active week for me in Mpls. I went to the Broadband
Summit held on Tuesday, shaking the hand of US Senator Amy
Klobuchar and listening to the Chair of the FCC come out strongly for
Net Neutrality. I went to the MInnesota
State Fair on Thursday where, amid a busy day, I shook the hand
of US Senator Al Franken. And yes, it feels great to say that.
In between, I went to a performance of the Minneapolis Fire
Collective. They were headed off to Burning Man, and did one last
show at home. I recorded the flaming performance in three segments.
The handheld video camera did pretty well considering there was no
light except the flames. I sat back a little, to get the whole
panoramic experience. Safe for work. Enjoy.

roger ebert's journal: In the chapel bells are ringing
The first time I heard gay marriage mentioned, I was incredulous. Two gay people couldn't get married! It simply...well, it wasn't done. I wasn't objecting to their homosexuality. I was objecting to the disturbance caused to my mental categories.
Matt Miller: A grim vision of 2012 and more gridlock (mattmilleronline.com)
I wish I could say "I have a dream," what with the anniversary of Dr. King's famous speech coming this weekend. But it's more like a grim vision. A vision of nearly zero progress on the major challenges facing the country between Wednesday, November 3, 2010 and January 20, 2013.
Matt Miller: A spending goal too small for aging America (mattmilleronline.com)
In recent days Ryan-mania has reached a wonky fever pitch. Paul Krugman says you're "the flimflam man." The Wall Street Journal's editorial page fired back that your "Roadmap for the Future" features "radical honesty." The Times says you'll be at the center of events if Republicans win big this fall. And The Post even featured you on Page One.
SUSAN J. DOUGLAS: The Teachers Are All Right (inthesetimes.com)
My brother is a high school teacher. He is not famous, and certainly not rich. After he leaves this earth, autographed photos of him will not hang in bars or restaurants; there will be no beautifully lit, high contrast black-and-white posters of him á la James Dean.
Marilyn Preston: Fitness Fantasy: Make the Unemployed the Fun-Employed (creators.com)
Unemployed people have an abundance of free time. And what's the No. 1 reason people don't exercise? Not enough time. So I propose a new national initiative that turns unemployment into fun-employment. Use some of that free time to get fit. It's something you have to work at, just like a real job, but until that real job comes along, why not support and encourage men and women to work at getting themselves into the best shape of their lives?
George Carlin By Matt Zoller Seitz
The long-deferred unveiling of the fully self-actualized, near-final version of George Carlin-at the ripe old age of 51!-was sparked by the 1984 death of his mother, the militarism and greed of the Reagan era, and the emergence of Sam Kinison, who inspired the older comic "to raise my level to where I wasn't lost in his dust." Nearly all of Carlin's most widely quoted routines-including "The Planet Is Fine," "We Like War" and "Religion Is Bullshit"-were created during the last two decades of his life.
"Star Island" by Carl Hiasen: A review by Jeff Baker
The plot of 'Star Island' is like an alligator in the Everglades, twisty and hard to follow. Don't grab it by the tail. It starts with a pop star, Cherry Pye (think of Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan, fighting in a gas station bathroom). Cherry's parents and her manager are pushing her to get ready for a tour to promote her new album, "Skankily Klad." She just wants to take drugs and have sex and doesn't want to rehearse. "There's, like, eighteen songs to learn and they're all different."
Behold, now, the fearless prognostications of those bold enough to Carpe Diem! (Were that there were more, I'm sayin', but no matter)... Proceed!

Well, then, Poll-fans... There it is... Good Fortune be upon the contestants (Although Joe S. seems to think they're doomed)... We'll see about that, now, won't we? 'Til Tuesday, then, As I always say...
Yer the Best!
Also, again, ties will be resolved in a scientific manner involving the ever fabulous, Maddie Muffin (Future Nobel AND Pulitzer Prize winner, President of the United States AND General Secretary of the UN amongst other notable achievements to numerous to mention)...
In the 1950s, he (Vincent Price) moved into horror films, with a role in House of Wax (1953), the first 3-D film to land in the year's top ten at the North American box office, and then the monster movie The Fly (1958).

Jim from CA, retired to ID, was first, and correct, with:
House of Wax
Alan J responded:
Avatar
Sally said:
Well, from what I can see online, "Avatar" was still in the year's top ten at the North American box office in January of 2010. The first 'new' 3D film of the year was, "Alice In Wonderland..." the question is a bit unclear to me - or I'm a bit dense - you decide!
Or, Sally in Martyland...
PS: Marty, that book sale sounded fabulous! I can't read a lot of my books anymore because of my sight - but, I still can't part with them either. Guess I don't need anymore - even so...
Charlie answered:
House of Wax (1953)
MAM wrote:
I think it is 'Avatar'. but not 100% certain.
Joe S took the day off.
And, mj said:
I'm guessing again
But I think it might be House of Wax. There was an earlier movie about an escaped gorilla terrorizing a town, and one that was nearly contemporary about a deformed frog man, The Maze, but I think the one with Vincent Price was a real draw.

It's been in print for over a century, but in future the Oxford English Dictionary - the authoritative guide to the English language - may only be available online.
Oxford University Press, the publisher, said Sunday that burgeoning demand for the dictionary's online version has far outpaced demand for the printed versions.
By the time the lexicographers behind the dictionary finish revising and updating the latest edition - a gargantuan task that will take many more years - publishers are doubtful there will still be a market for the printed form.
The online Oxford English Dictionary now gets 2 million hits a month from subscribers. The current printed edition - a hefty 20-volume, 750 pound ($1,165) set published in 1989 - has sold about 30,000 sets in total.

Beetle Bailey is slouching toward retirement age, but the lazy Army private won't be getting rest anytime soon from his tour of duty on newspaper comics pages.
The indolent wise guy, whose popularity soared when he enlisted during the Korean War, turns 60 on Saturday.
Mort Walker has been imaging Beetle every day for all those decades and says he'll continue with his creation until he's no longer able.
The genial gags by Beetle and the cast of characters - Sarge and his dog, Otto, Gen. Amos Halftrack, Miss Buxley and others - are followed seven days a week by readers in 1,800 newspapers, which is "astronomically huge," said Brendan Burford, comics editor at King Features, the strip's syndicating service.

In a remote Serbian mountain village, they're cooking up delicacies to make your mouth water - or your stomach churn. At the seventh annual World Testicle Cooking Championship, visitors watch - and sometimes taste - as teams of chefs cook up bull, boar, camel, ostrich and even kangaroo testicles.
"This festival is all about fun, food and bravery," said Ljubomir Erovic, the Serbian chef and testicles gourmand specialist who organizes the bizarre cooking festival and has published a testicle cookery book.
The food - politely called "white kidneys" in Serbian - is believed to be rich in testosterone. In the Balkans, it is considered to help men's libido.
The festival also gives prizes to to those who have made the news for being "ballsy". This year one of the unsuspecting winners is U.S. President Barack Obama.
The other prize went to American pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger who last year glided a passenger jet into the Hudson river in New York rather than risk crashing in a densely populated area trying to reach an airport.
Britain carried out assassinations during the Cold War, novelist and former secret agent John le Carre told The Sunday Telegraph newspaper.
The espionage writer worked for Britain's domestic and external intelligence agencies during the 1950s and 1960s.
"Certainly we did very bad things. We did a lot of direct action. Assassinations, at arm's length. Although I was never involved," said the 79-year-old, whose real name is David Cornwell.
He drew a distinction between Western spy agencies and their Soviet bloc counterparts in the way they went about it.

Pop superstar Madonna will not allow a man who claims to be the biological father of her adopted Malawian daughter to see the four-year-old, a South African newspaper reported on Sunday.
James Kambewa, 26, who is working as a waiter in Durban, had hoped to meet Mercy whom the wealthy star adopted last year but Madonna's spokeswoman Barbara Charone said the child's father was not known.
"The extended family members had no knowledge of a father. The village leadership had no knowledge of a father... the mother was raped and left," the Sunday Times quoted Charone as saying.
The court listed Mercy's biological father as unknown and said that she was born in January 2006 to a 14-year-old mother who died days after giving birth.

A police bomb squad had to be called to a Philadelphia construction site after someone found an old, inert torpedo.
PennDOT spokesman Charles Metzger says a transportation department archaeological team found two men sitting on the torpedo drinking beers on Friday morning. He says the men told the archaeologists they had found the munition.
Metzger says the dig team called police, who dispatched a bomb squad. The squad determined the torpedo was not explosive.
The construction site is related to an Interstate 95 interchange project in the city's Kensington neighborhood. It's close to the location of an old shipyard where warships were built during World War II.

A Swiss company has been forced to apologize and pull its piggy banks off the market after heavy criticism from the tiny Alpine principality known for its private banking industry.
The offense was all in the name, "Liechtenschwein," turning the last syllable into the German word for "pig."
Hans Buff & Co. said Thursday that it meant only to poke some fun at the country, which is even wealthier per capita than Switzerland.
