Woodstock vs. Disneyland

By Baron Dave Romm

My parents were at Woodstock while I went to Disneylad

For the 40th Anniversary of the most famous rock concert ever

The story behind the story

Woodstock was a fairly big deal for our very conservative area between New York City and Albany. As it receded into history, even as I went to college, I started telling this story as much for humor value as to brag about my father and mother. I finally wrote it up for the local newspapers, but neither of the Minneapolis/St. Paul papers wanted it. While I would have liked to have my friends around here see it, the article really does belong in my father's paper, though he hasn't been associated with for decades. Al Romm passed on almost ten years ago, and I think he'd appreciate the true story coming out.

I ran a draft by my mother, who filled in many details, This sparked further stories from her, collected by my brother. You should all read her much more Woodstock-intensive article in the Huffington Post on 8/14, Sex, Drugs, Rock 'N Roll in Redneck Country.

Now that these articles have been published, I corrected the record in Wikipedia and had proper cites.

Woodstock

The Woodstock Music and Arts Fair was held August 15-18, 1969, less than a month after Apollo 11 put two men on the moon. Earlier in the year, the country had elected Nixon, who had "a secret plan to end the war" in Vietnam. America was feeling good about itself, and rightly so.

My father, A. N. (Al) Romm, was editor of the Times Herald-Record in Middletown, NY, the first daily paper to be printed on offset, which meant magazine-quality pictures, the only daily closest to any of the proposed sites for the festival. The concert itself was controversial even before it happened, and the final site at Yasgur's farm was the third site selected. The first proposed site was in Middletown itself, but the Wallkill Zoning Board said no. My father was critical in swaying public opinion to accept the 3 Days of Love and Peace. It's just a rock concert.... what could go wrong? he opined. The promoters found Max Yasgur's farm a few miles up Rte 17. No water-- six wells had to be dug. No parking.

Both my mother and father were at Woodstock the entire time, as reporters, starting Thursday. No one assigned to the story could get near it, nor could any of the New York papers. But Middletown staffers there on their day off all gathered in the Press Tent and wrote the coverage that almost won the Pulitzer that year --"Only one vote off," said an editor later.

Dad had the only phone line out. Later, he said the smartest plan he had made was hiring a motorcyclist to carry film and stories through the choked, impassible traffic back to the paper. No other paper was closer than a helicopter.

The Record put out a rare Saturday extra, which helped convince the publishers that the paper could sustain an increase from six days a week to seven. My mother's first picture made the front page the first day, a young girl on a stretcher--drug overdose-- being taken into the First Aid Tent. (see TH-R story, link at bottom)

All this passed me by. I knew about the concert, of course, and had followed the travails of the organizers. My parents trepidatiously broached the subject of my going. But I didn't care about Jimi Hendrix or The Dead. Pete Seeger wasn't going to be at Woodstock, so neither was I.

I was 14. I grew up on tv. I wanted to go to Disneyland.

Disneyland

I had stayed up all night watching Armstrong and Aldrin on the moon--memories I treasure to this day. Nothing like the moon landing has happened since. I was bouncing around for weeks, following the progress of Apollo 11 and the excitement when they all came back. I didn't want to sit still to listen to music I probably wouldn't like. When it came time for Woodstock, my parents made preparations for a camping trip up there, and sent me to California.

Berkeley, California, to be exact, where my aunt lived. When you're 14 from New York, "California" is a nebulous concept where "Los Angeles" and "San Francisco" are pretty much in the same vicinity. In fact, they are culturally and geographically in different worlds.

In Berkeley, I helped picket a grocery store that was selling lettuce picked by non-union workers. Okay, I was really baby sitting my cousins, but it was fun. And successful; the grocery store eventually left and is now the Berkeley Bowl. I visited Haight-Ashbury and bought Andr Norton science fiction in the used book stores.

Eventually, I made it to LA. In the hills above Los Angeles, I stayed with my uncle-in-law and aunt-in-law-in-law. I watered the lawn, drove through smog, sent my first real e-mail, and sampled the Other California Lifestyle. And, of course, went to Disneyland.

Disneyland was great. It wasn't everything I expected: The Tea Cup Ride was closed. But the weather was perfect, the rides spectacularly fun (what we would later call "awesome!") and Apollo 11 banners were on sale. The Matterhorn was more fun than it looked on tv; the Enchanted Tiki Room's audio animatronics were better than on tv; It's A Small World was as good as it had been at the 1964 NY World's Fair. And so on and on. The whole place was a real E Ticket.

I was treated like royalty. Well, like a tourist with money, which in LA is roughly the same thing. I met Mickey (several times) and my faith in television was affirmed.

Woodstock vs. Disneyland

At Woodstock, it rained for three days. Mud. Water was scarce and you should be careful of food and drink anyone just gave you. The music was great, if you could hear it, but many were outside the natural amphitheater with sound quality a secondary concern. As huge flash crowds go, Woodstock was peaceful and real bonds were formed with total strangers. Then everyone went home.

While Woodstock took place forty miles from where I lived, I was at Disneyland. I had a much better time than my parents but they got much better stories.

Aftermath: No one knows just how many people were at Woodstock: could be as few as 200,000, as many as 750,000. The initial estimate of 600,000 seems high in retrospect, and the only way to know is to lay a grid over the scene and count the people there, then count the squares--the way the cops do it, and add in a guess at the people in the woods. But no one has done it. All we know: It was large and no one was in charge.

I've probably told more Woodstock stories than Disneyland stories, but, for better or worse, in the third person.

An edited and unlinked version of this article appeared in the August 15, 2009 Times Herald-Record as In his words: The 'Record' on Woodstock. For my mother's perspective on the experience, see my brother Joe's column in the Huffington Post, Sex, Drugs, Rock 'N Roll in Redneck Country. I'm also one of many people who's excerpted comments are in the St. Paul Pioneer Press's I Remember Woodstock, Really column of 8/14/09.

Manson Family member Leslie Van Houten, sentenced to Life in prison for her role in the LaBianca murders, is eligible to apply for parole later this month. She has been denied parole 17 times. Many people, including film maker John Waters ( John Waters: Leslie Van Houten: A Friendship, Part 1 of 5 ), are advocating for her release. She reportedly has been a model prisoner completing all available prison programs and assisting other inmates with these programs. She has earned two college degrees and has maintained a clean disciplinary record. She has accepted full responsibility for her actions...

Trivia Question from Yesterday

What actor was Emmy-nominated for playing the same character on three different TV series?

      Kelsey Grammer                                               Source

Kelsey Grammer has been Emmy-nominated for playing the same character on three different shows: "Cheers" (1982), "Frasier" (1993) and a guest appearance on "Wings" (1990).            Source

mj was first, and correct, with:
Going with the flow of the last few days
Kelsey Grammar won an Emmies for playing Frazier Crane on Cheers (supporting continuing character), Wings (guest appearance), and Frazier (lead actor). That may even be the order in which he won them.

Baron Dave ( "If less is more, think of how much more 'more' would be!"  --  Frasier) replied:
Oh, I'll go with Kelsey Grammer playing Frasier Crane, nominated for Cheers, Frasier and Wings. Many of the Cheers gang played some version of themselves; considered something of a necessity for a grueling weekly series. But Frasier was a late edition to the Cheers gang, and Grammer actually had to act. And he played the role for twenty years. Ted Danson is not that far off from Sam Malone, but Kelsey Grammer is nothing like Frasier. Have to give him props for that. Of course, he loses props for being such a pc wingnut. Yet another Hollywood right wing media elite.

Charlie answered:
Kelsey Grammer for Frasier Crane, in Cheers, Frasier, and Wings.

Alan J replied:
   Kelsey Grammer

~ Tony In Philly replied:
   Ewww, Kelsey Grammar.

  William Peterson, that CSI dude?

Jim from CA, retired to Idaho responded:
   Kelsey Grammar

BttbB replied:
Kelsey Grammar for Cheers, Frasier and Wings... I still enjoy watching Frasier reruns on Lifetime in the mornings. David Hyde Pierce upstages Grammar so many times! I think he's much funnier. Roz is 'The Bomb', too, IMHO. The word 'sultry' was made for her...

Sally said:
I believe that Kelsey Grammer is the only actor to be nominated for Emmy's playing the same character on three different shows: Cheers, Wings and Frasier...
PS: I am sorry this is a late entry but I've had trauma today. Out in front of my home is a light pole on which I have nurtured beautiful Morning Glory vines all summer long. I tell you, they were thick, lush, and green - a real source of pride for a Gardner as myself. Sometime, early this morning, a rogue deer stopped by and ravaged one side of the vines! I almost had a stroke when I looked out my window this morning and saw the dastardly deed! All I can say is that if I had a shotgun, that villain would be simmering in a pot of venison stew right now!! And, keep in mind that I live 12 miles across the Hudson River from the heart of NYC!!
I have yet to recover from the vicious attack on MY helpless flower vines... (Pause for some major sympathy here...)

MAM     wrote:
Kelsey Grammer, as Frasier Crane, has been Emmy-nominated as Supporting Actor in 'Cheers', Lead Actor in 'Frasier', and Guest Actor in 'Wings'.

And, Joe S replied:
Kelsey Grammer is the only actor who has been nominated for an Emmy for the same character in three different shows. He was nominated for Supporting Actor in Cheers, Lead Actor in Frasier and Guest Actor in Wings - as Frasier Crane in all three.

Pravda (Russian for 'truth') has come a long way from the days when it was strictly a propaganda organ for the Soviets. I was so impressed by the movie when I first saw it at an advance showing at an old theater in Greenfield Ma that I went home (after meeting Caleb for only the first time) and contacted every distributor I could find and set off a bidding war to have it released nationally...even globally ( It's HUGE in Russia)

I was really tweaked when I got my copy and found a quote I made of it placed right on the front cover...lower right corner...whattan honor!

Bill Clinton

Republicans have turned to terrifying people in the debate over overhauling the health care system because the GOP has no political clout to fight it, former President Bill Clinton told a gathering of progressive bloggers on Thursday.

Clinton was president when the Democrats made their last major effort to change the health care system. The big difference now, Clinton said, is that Democrats have a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate as well as control of the House.

The former president called "crazy" the charges that promoting living wills and other end-of-life planning is somehow promoting death.

Clinton spoke at the opening session of the Netroots Nation convention, a gathering of politically progressive bloggers and other online activists.

Leno's First Guest

Jerry Seinfeld

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld will be the first guest on Jay Leno's new primetime TV show in September, NBC said on Friday.

The star and co-creator of the 1990s TV comedy "Seinfeld" will help kick off "The Jay Leno Show" when it premieres on NBC on September 14.

Seinfeld, one of America's most popular comedians, will join R&B singers Kanye West, Rihanna and Jay-Z, who will be performing on the opening show.

Leno, who ended his 17-year run on "The Tonight Show" in May, has said the new program will feature more comedy and fewer celebrities on couches promoting their latest ventures.

Bob Dylan

Rock legend Bob Dylan was treated like a complete unknown by police in a New Jersey shore community when a resident called to report someone wandering around the neighborhood.

Dylan was in Long Branch, about a two-hour drive south of New York City, on July 23 as part of a tour with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp that was to play at a baseball stadium in nearby Lakewood.

A 24-year-old police officer apparently was unaware of who Dylan is and asked him for identification, Long Branch business administrator Howard Woolley said Friday.

A second officer, also in his 20s, responded to assist the first officer. He, too, apparently was unfamiliar with Dylan, Woolley said.

Actor's US 'Detention' Prompts Outrage

Shah Rukh Khan

India reacted with outrage Sunday after Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan said he was detained for questioning at a U.S. airport, though immigration officials denied he was formally held.

Fellow Indian film stars and political leaders condemned what they called "humiliating" treatment given to Khan, a Muslim who is well-loved in a largely Hindu country. One Cabinet minister suggested a "tit-for-tat" policy toward Americans traveling to India.

Khan said he was detained Friday by U.S. immigration officials at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey because his name came up on a computer alert list.

The actor is in the U.S. to promote a new film, "My Name is Khan," which is about racial profiling of Muslims after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

Delays TV Channel Plans

United States Olympic Committee

The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) has delayed plans to launch a cable television network devoted to the Olympics after angering the IOC, it said Sunday.

"In order to facilitate a productive dialogue, the USOC has decided to delay further development of the network until we have resolved all issues of concern to the IOC," USOC chief Larry Probst said in a statement.

USOC had initially planned to launch its project next year with Comcast Corp agreeing to carry the channel in its cable lineup.

The decision, though, triggered the ire of the IOC who said it was not consulted in this decision that involved the Games, its own prime product.

Wins American's Release From Myanmar Burma

Sen. Jim Webb

Stung by international outrage over the trial of Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar's ruling generals agreed Saturday to hand an American prisoner involved in her case to a visiting U.S. senator.

Sen. Jim Webb was also granted an unprecedented meeting with the junta chief, and was allowed to hold talks with Suu Kyi, the first foreign official permitted to see the Nobel laureate since she was sentenced to 18 more months of house arrest on Tuesday.

American John Yettaw, who was sentenced to seven years of hard labor for swimming uninvited to Suu Kyi's lakeside house in Yangon, will be deported on Sunday, Webb said in a statement from his Washington office.

The impending deportation indicates "good relations between the two countries and hope (that) these will grow," Yettaw's lawyer Khin Maoung Oo said. Webb echoed the sentiment.

Arrest Warrant Issued

Bobby Brown

A Massachusetts judge has issued an arrest warrant for Grammy Award-winning R&B singer Bobby Brown for failure to pay child support, local media reported on Friday.

Family court judge Christina Harms ordered Brown, 40, arrested next time he is in the state and brought to her court after he failed to appear at a court appointment, the reports said.

Brown helped pioneer the new jack swing music style in the 1980s and had a No. 1 hit with "My Prerogative" in 1988. His marriage to singer Whitney Houston ended in divorce in 2007.

This latest arrest warrant stems from a child support case for two children from a different relationship, the Boston Herald newspaper reported.

Opts For High Maintenance

Archie

When comic book store owner Dave Luebke heard that after 67 years, the carrot-topped everyman of the comic world, Archie, was proposing to va-va-voomy rich girl Veronica instead of girl-next-door Betty, he decided to protest by selling his copy of the series' rare first issue.

Luebke's Archie Comics No. 1 sold for $38,837 when Dallas' Heritage Auction Galleries offered it Friday. Heritage spokesman Noah Fleisher said the buyer was a longtime Archie reader and collector from Virginia who did not want to be identified.

"Betty is it. Not Veronica," said Luebke, whose Richmond, Va., store has more than 1 million comics in stock. "This is serious."

And, he said, 99 percent of his customers agree that perky, blond Betty is the clear choice over shiny dark-haired Veronica in the seemingly never-ending love triangle.

Thai Trial

Gerald and Patricia Green

Before film producers Gerald and Patricia Green took over a movie festival in Bangkok, the weeklong event struggled to capture Hollywood's attention.

Over the next four years, the Southern California couple transformed the festival into a rising star on the international circuit for screening new films, attracting the likes of Michael Douglas, Jeremy Irons and director Oliver Stone to Thailand.

The success earned the couple a small fortune and drew scrutiny from federal prosecutors who have charged them with bribing Thai officials to run the festival and land lucrative contracts.

In a novel trial scheduled to start Tuesday in U.S. District Court, prosecutors allege the Greens paid bribes so they would be awarded business contracts that brought the couple $14 million. The trial is the first in which entertainment industry figures are charged under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, a federal statute prohibiting corrupt payments to foreign officials for business purposes.

But his widow is having his body moved over one spot and auctioning the site above Monroe's, hoping to earn enough to pay off her 1.6-million-dollar Beverly Hills home.

"Here is a once in a lifetime and into eternity opportunity to spend your eternal days directly above Marilyn Monroe," the sale advertisement on the site says. Bidding starts at 500,000 dollars.
