To Rally HIS Base on Health Reform, Obama Channels the Woodstock Spirit

from Bruce

Roger Ebert's Journal: Finding my own voice
Computers can do just about everything these days, from running airplanes to carrying out labyrinthine mathematical calculations.

Jim Hightower: GOOBERHEADS, BLIMPS, AND EARMARKS (jimhightower.com)
Time for another Gooberhead Award - presented periodically to those in the news who've got their tongues going 100 miles per hour, but forgot to put their brains in gear.

Sandy Stonesifer: Thou Shalt Be Debt Free (slate.com)
Which is more important: tithing or paying off my $13,000 credit-card debt?

A certain age (guardian.co.uk)
Michele Hanson finds she is often in a rage nowadays.

Garrison Keillor: Swashbucklers report nation's temperature
You know it's going to be a difficult day when you wake up with "Guantanamera, Guajira Guantanamera, Guantanamera, Guajira Guantanamera" going around and around in your head and it won't stop. You know that probably you should not tackle health-care reform today, though brainlessness has not stopped other people from weighing in on it.

Andrew Tobias: Daily Comment
Good stuff about health-care reform.

Eliot Coleman: Eating Meat Isn't Bad for the Planet, It's Our System of Raising the Animals That's Wrong (Grist.org; posted on AlterNet.org)
Sadly too many have been fooled -- the culprit is not meat eating but rather the excesses of corporate/industrial agriculture.

Tom Danehy: People are dying because legislators refuse to separate cell-phone use and driving (tucsonweekly.com)
The proposed study was never undertaken, for fear of angering those many members of Congress who were so deep in the back pockets of the cell-phone lobbyists that if the lawmaker sneezed, the lobbyist would get a mini-enema.

Josh Indar: Review of "Idiot America" by Charles P. Pierce
Pierce goes a step beyond mere portraiture, however, positing his "Three Great Premises" which have allowed American idiocy to thrive over the last 100 years or so. Premise One: Any theory is valid if it moves units or otherwise makes money. Premise Two: Anything can be true if it is said loudly enough. Premise Three: Fact is that which enough people believe.

Rosie Swash: David Byrne, more than just a Talking Head (guardian.co.uk)
David Byrne refuses to reunite his old band, but his music career is still going strong. Then there's his travel book and his bicycle racks.

Will Harris: A Chat with the cast of "Mad Men" (bullz-eye.com)
"The culture and the attitudes of the United States at that time are shifting, and these people have to deal with what that shift entails. Not only in their own lives, but in how they deal with their coworkers, how they deal with their workspace, how they deal with their relationshipsŠhow they deal with all of that."--John Hamm

Aaron Barnhart: 'Mad Men' back again and at the top of its game (McClatchy Newspapers)
This may not be the golden age of television, but perhaps it's the titanium age: high quality in large quantities.

The Weekly Poll

Current Question

The 'Mercy, Me' Edition

Manson Family member Leslie Van Houten, sentenced to Life in prison for her role in the LaBianca murders, is eligible to apply for parole later this month. She has been denied parole 17 times. Many people, including film maker John Waters ( John Waters: Leslie Van Houten: A Friendship, Part 1 of 5 ), are advocating for her release. She reportedly has been a model prisoner completing all available prison programs and assisting other inmates with these programs. She has earned two college degrees and has maintained a clean disciplinary record. She has accepted full responsibility for her actions...

Should Van Houten be paroled?

What actor was Emmy-nominated for playing the same character on three different TV series?

Trivia Question from Yesterday

Ted Danson, George Wendt, and ___?___ were the only actors to appear in every episode of the TV series Cheers.

      Rhea Perlman                                               Source

Ted Danson, Rhea Perlman and George Wendt are the only actors to appear in every episode of the TV series Cheers             Source

Charlie was first, and correct, with:
   Rhea Perlman

Joe S replied:
I'm going to throw out a guess and say Rhea Perelman, Carla

mj responded:
   It's one of two
Either John Ratzenberger (Cliff the postman) or Rhea Perlman (Carla the barmaid). I'm going with John since I think "Carla" was off screen for one of her "deliveries".

Alan J answered:
   Rhea Perlman

Sally wrote:
I gonna guess that Rhea Perlman, Ted Danson, and George Wendt, were the only actors to appear in every episode of the TV series Cheers.

OK, this must be either John Ratzenberger or Rhea Pearlman.
I'm going to say Pearlman (didn't Cliff's Mother make some appearances in his stead?).

~ Tony In Philly replied:
   Rhea Perlman

And, MAM     answered:

Yesterday (Wednesday) I had just about given up hope that you had found a fix for your ftp/computer problem. So, just before I headed outside to view the Meteor Shower at midnight, I checked 'one more time'. And there you were! But I spent way too long looking at the night sky to open the page up and read it when I came back inside, so left it for today (Thursday). Was delighted to see that you seem to really have a 'fix'. Was also delighted to see 4 'shooting stars', one very large and low helicopter, one very high jet, and numerous lightning bugs. Cats sat on the other side of the screen door and hammered and banged on it . . . "What are you doing out there???"

In the mail:

Subject: Frasier Theme
Technically speaking, the television show, Frasier, did not have a theme song; or more specifically opening theme music. The little ditty sung at the end of the show, Tossed Salad and Scrambled Eggs, is what is called in the industry as the Closing Credits music. The show, and it was the first to do so, started with a few throwaway musical notes and then went right into the show.
This device was designed to get the show started and hook the viewer before their feeble little mind could muster up enough electricity to operate their thumb on the remote.
And it worked.
It also facilitated the stuffing of more commercials in the time slot and it allowed the commercials to start sooner.

Steven B

Thanks, Steven!
