Post Convention Quick Thoughts
By Baron Dave Romm
The Democratic National Convention is over. No surprises. The networks decided to limit their coverage, and it cost them. Ratings were up in the time slot when the convention was on the air. Ratings were down for the networks and up for cable during the prime time speeches. Kerry already had a bit of a bounce announcing Edwards while the convention itself will take a while to percolate through the distraction of another terror alert and fearmongering by the goppies. Here are some random and not-so-random musings.
Once again, it's proven that Republicans believe lies and don't believe the truth. They were so quick to hang Sandy Berger on a bunch of old accusation that they had to make stuff up to make it seem worse. And now he's been completely exonerated. No documents are missing. Nothing hiding in his sock. He inadvertently took a few copies of his own memos (he was National Security Advisor under Clinton, and a good one) and returned them and destroyed one. Republicans desperately need to apologize to Sandy Berger, but they just don't have the guts. The Sphincter Conservatives have alreay judged him and facts simply won't unclench their butts. Sad, really.
The Berger exoneration is buried in the subscriber section of the Wall Street Journal. WSL is too far under Rove's thumb to practice real journalism and break a big story like this one to a larger audience. It's up to bloggers like Eschaton and a brief KYW New Radio piece.
Write your newspaper demanding that they spend as many column inches apologizing to Sandy Berger and excoriating those who found him guilty just from the RNC accusations. Don't let incompetent journalism distract them from the National Security Advisor who is the major screw up: Condolezza Rice.
Joke seen on the net:
We knew it. Bartcop knew it. Bloggers knew it. Heck, the Iraqis knew it. But the conservative news media went out of it's way to avoid the truth about the most talked about photo-op of the Iraq War:
More proof that Reagan Republicans are fleeing in panic from the lying cowardly weasels in the oily Bush administration
And, as we long suspected, Bush is simply bonkers. Capitol Hill Blue has this book review.
Sliding away from the oily Bush administration for a moment, lets look at some of the core beliefs of the sphincter conservatives. Just how politically correct is the right? How solid are they in things that just aren't true?
I was around in the late 60s and early 70s when the anti-war movement occasionally turned anti-soldier. Yet even the most vehement anti-war protester I knew was respectful of the individual soldiers they encountered. There might be sharp words over policy and whether to support Nixon or not, and sometimes those remarks got personal (on both sides), but I never saw anyone yell "baby killer!" at a man in uniform or anything like that.
I grew up 25 miles from West Point. There were a lot of soldiers in our area, in uniform, and a lot of peace protesters to talk to them. Over the years, I had plenty of opportunity to see any of these actions, and I didn't.
Still, I was just a kid who had registered for the draft. You hear, to this day, just how badly vets were treated when they returned home. I thought my experiences were not wide enough and didn't say anything. On the other hand, through the years, vet friends of mine railed againt the anti-war protesters but didn't have their own story to tell. It was always "This happened! No question!" "A buddy of mine says...". I believed them. Well, it turns out not to be true, or at least very much overblown.
In other words, the "spitting on vets" story is largely mythical. The vets wanted to be Rambo, they weren't spit on. If a vet ever says that returning soldiers were treated disrespectfully -- and they will, it's almost a point of honor for the corps to have stood alone, above those they protected -- ask for specifics. If it didn't happen to them, get a name of who it did happen to. Track it down. Say you'll print the story on the web, but only from the original source. Let's practice some real journalism! And show our brave men and women in uniform that the people who they should be mad at are the conservatives in the Bush administration who have cut their combat pay, reduced benefits at home and sent their buddies into a danger zone for political purposes.
The military is learning, slowly, that the Democrats are their friends and the Republicans are not. The contrast between the heroic John Kerry and the cowardly George W. Bush could not be greater. Let's support our troops and elect the man who has three Purple Hearts.

He reviews things at random for obscure web sites. You can read all his music recommendations from Bartcop-E here, you can order Shockwave Radio Theater CDs, and you can hear the lasttwo Shockwave broadcasts in Real Audio here (scroll down to Shockwave). Thanks to everyone who has sent me music to play on the air, and I'm continuing to collect extra-weird stuff.

Re: Bill Maher's Realtime
The new season of Bill Maher's HBO show Realtime premiered Friday night, and here are a few of the highlights:
1) Congressional Cockroach and Professional Bush-Dick Licker David Dreier was completely manhandled by Michael Moore. Dreier slimed Fahrenheit 9-11 as being nothing but lies and then proceeded to completely misrepresent the scene where Moore confronts members of Congress regarding whether they would send their own children to die in Iraq. Moore destroyed Dreier's credibility by simply asking him whether he had seen the movie, to which Dreier replied that he hadn't. Talk about doing your homework-- the idiot Dreier knows he's going to be appearing with Michael Moore, knows that the subject of the movie will come up, and he doesn't even bother to see it so he'll at least look like he knows what he's talking about. At one point, Maher tried to slow up the body blows Moore was dealing Dreier, and Moore brushed Maher aside, saying, "This guy came on here whining about my film. You gotta stop these people, Bill. I'm not some wimpy Democrat. I'll stand up for myself." It was a beautiful thing to see. It's also notable that Dreier, like the Cockroach he is, scurried out of the studio a good ten minutes before the show ended . . .
2) There was a lot of discussion of Bush's 9-11 incompetence. Both of the Republican Cockroaches who appeared (Dreier and Bill Owens) were asked whether they would have continued to sit in a classroom reading My Pet Goat after learning that the country was being attacked by terrorists. Neither would answer the question, of course, and both just repeated their mantra ad nauseum: "Fearless Leader is great and good." Former Canadian Prime Minister Kim Campbell brought up the most important point, though, which is that the American people have the right to see the video of that day, so that they can decide for themselves whether or not Bush acted appropriately; unfortunately, though, the only place you can see that footage is in Moore's film, because the whore media, in their effort to protect Chicken George, has refused to show it for three years.
3) Ralph Nader made a brief appearance and was did not come off too well. Maher asked him whether he would support Kerry if Kerry were running against David Duke instead of Bush. Nader, a bit to my surprise, said that he would back Kerry if that were the case. Maher then responded, "So then your position is that Bush just isn't bad enough?" It was a question that Nader clearly didn't want any part of, and he quickly reverted to his rehearsed line, "Why are we restricting ourselves to these two choices . . ."

Thanks, Paul!
Wonder if PBS still has it available in some form online?

Bogus Version on Sale in China
Clinton Book
Alfred A. Knopf, publishers of Bill Clinton's best-selling "My Life," say they haven't yet sold the Chinese-language rights to China. So China's copyright thieves have struck again, concocting their own versions.
One 438-page paperback version called "Wode Shenghuo" ("My Life") sells for 10 yuan ($1.20) at a temple book fair and carries the former president's photo on the cover, just like the 957-page original. But it's not the same photo.
The book lists "Clinton, HR" as the author, and just about all of it is lifted verbatim from the Chinese-language version of her memoir.

Theatrical Release
'Outfoxed'
Robert Greenwald's "Outfoxed -- Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism" will receive a domestic theatrical release Aug. 6 through Philippe Diaz's Cinema Libre, opening in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. Further expansion may follow.
What makes the deal unusual is that the Disinformation Co. released the controversial documentary on DVD July 13. Since then, it has shot to the top of Amazon.com's DVD bestseller list, currently occupying the No. 2 slot.
Cinema Libre is slated to open another Greenwald doc, "Uncovered: The Whole Truth About the Iraq War," on Aug. 13.

While CNN and MSNBC carried Gore's 15-minute speech in its entirety, Fox looked in for one minute. CNN and MSNBC listened to Carter for 16 minutes, while Fox telecast five minutes live, somewhere in the middle of his speech.
Fox had about five minutes of Sen. Edward Kennedy's nearly half-hour speech live on the air and three minutes of Sharpton's, while the others carried most or all of them.
During the beginning of Sharpton's speech, Fox carried a taped O'Reilly interview with ABC's Peter Jennings. After providing a taste of Sharpton, O'Reilly cut away to talk to two print journalists about his own interview with filmmaker Michael Moore the previous night.
After some critics questioned Fox's short attention span for Gore and Carter, O'Reilly - ringleader of the "no spin zone" - explained the next night that his mission was to provide viewers with perspective rather than propaganda.

Accused of Wiretapping Meetings
Randolph S. Webster
A former television publicist allegedly wiretapped the cable channel that fired him and eavesdropped on meetings for 2 1/2 years, authorities said.
Randolph S. Webster, 38, was arrested Friday and released on $10,000 bond pending his arraignment later this month on a felony count of wiretapping, authorities said.
Webster, the brother-in-law of tennis star Pete Sampras, was vice president of publicity for the FX cable television channel for two years but was fired in July 2001, authorities said.
He allegedly used a toll-free telephone number and a password to dial into the conference call during weekly staff meetings.

Chicago Author
Norma Khouri
After Norma Toliopoulos abruptly left Chicago in 1999, family and friends were surprised to see her on national TV shows three years later as a successful author named Norma Khouri discussing her autobiographical account of a so-called "honor killing" of her best friend in Jordan in 1996.
Khouri became a celebrity in Australia with the 2002 publication of her book "Forbidden Love." It tells the story of her Muslim friend and business partner at a hair salon in Jordan who was stabbed to death by her father for marrying a Christian man.
But an Australian newspaper report last week called the work "a fake."
The report has prompted publishers in Australia and the United States to pull the book from shelves, while the 34-year-old author vows to substantiate her work.

Already Blighted By 'Dogs and Litter'
Princess Diana Fountain
Litter and paddling dogs are blighting Britain's newly unveiled memorial fountain to the late Princess Diana and are partly to blame for its closure two weeks after it opened, a Cabinet minister said Sunday.
The ring-shaped water sculpture was opened by Queen Elizabeth on July 6, almost seven years after Diana's death in an August 1997 car crash in Paris.
But a week after the ceremony, a blocked pump halted the water flow and it was closed for repairs.

Reported Likely Fakes
Rare Instruments
Five of 30 supposedly rare stringed instruments bought by the New Jersey Symphony for $17 million from a man now under indictment for tax fraud are probably not authentic, a newspaper reported Sunday.
Five experts contacted by The Sunday Star-Ledger of Newark determined that four violins and one cello - among a collection purchased from pet products tycoon Herbert Axelrod - were not produced by the master craftsmen named by Axelrod.
The "Golden Age Collection" of 30 violins, violas and cellos includes rare works said to be made by such famed craftsmen as Antonio Stradivari and Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesu during the 17th and 18th centuries. Axelrod had valued the collection at $49 million - a figure some say is vastly inflated.

Sam Edwards
Sam Edwards, a character actor who made scores of appearances on such TV shows as "Gunsmoke," "Barnaby Jones," "McCloud" and "Happy Days," as well as portraying the town banker on "Little House on the Prairie," has died at age 89.
Edwards, who also appeared on radio and in films, died Wednesday after suffering a heart attack, said his stepson, William Edwards.
Born into a show business family in Macon, Ga., Edwards made his stage debut as a baby when his mother, actress Edna Park, held him in her arms during a scene for the play "Tess of the Storm Country."
He appeared on radio with his family in the 1930s in "The Adventures of Sonny and Buddy," in which he played a boy who runs away to join a traveling medicine show, and later as himself in "The Edwards Family," a program that also featured his brother, sister and parents.
After three years in the Army during World War II, he returned to radio in the mid-1940s, moving on to television in the 1950s.
He worked regularly in TV into the 1980s, appearing on such shows as "The Streets of San Francisco," "The Dukes of Hazzard," "Wonder Woman," "Cannon," "Mannix," "Dragnet" and "Adam-12." On "Little House on the Prairie," he portrayed Mr. Anderson the town banker from 1978 to 1983.
His film credits included "Twelve O'Clock High," "Hello Dolly!" and "The Postman Always Rings Twice" and numerous TV movies.
He also supplied the voices for several children's productions and appeared on "Winnie the Pooh" records as Owl and Tigger.
